Arendt And Foucault: Perspectives On Modernity And Citizenship, Martin F. Rowley Jr.
Arendt And Foucault: Perspectives On Modernity And Citizenship, Martin F. Rowley Jr.
Master's Theses and Capstones
This thesis examines the dangers posed by totalitarianism in the modern age by bringing the philosophies of Hannah Arendt and Michel Foucault together in dialogue. It aims to compare and contrast their respective philosophies as a way of responding to the challenges posed by totalitarianism to democratic culture. While there are clear resonances in their analyses Arendt and Foucault are rarely brought together, much to the detriment of political theory. The thesis is based on a textual analysis of Arendt and Foucault's major works and is organized into three chapters and an introduction. Chapter one gives an overview of Arendt's …

Hydrogeologic Characterization Of Fractured Rock: Site 32, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Hallie J. Marbet
Hydrogeologic Characterization Of Fractured Rock: Site 32, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Hallie J. Marbet
Master's Theses and Capstones
Natural underground settings exhibit small and large scale spatial variations, making them difficult to characterize. This complexity is particularly difficult to overcome when delineating a heterogeneous fractured bedrock system. The following study involves the characterization of a fractured bedrock site.
Hydraulically conductive fractures provide migratory pathways within a fractured rock. Interpreting their orientation in space is important in understanding contaminant movement. The data used include borehole geophysical, lithologic and hydraulic test data.
The first method applied was a geostatistical analysis. This technique incorporates statistical characteristics of the geophysical and hydraulic data to develop fracture patterns. The second method is a …

Studies Of The Structures, Biosynthesis And Function Of Fungal Glycosphingolipids, Elizabeth A. Owuor
Master's Theses and Capstones
Glycosphingolipids (GSLs) are ubiquitously distributed among all eukaryotes. In fungi, GSLs have also been implicated in a variety of cellular processes, including growth, cell signaling, differentiation and morphogenesis. Detailed knowledge of fungal GSL structure and biosynthesis is therefore expected to yield valuable insights into both their functions within the organism and their interactions with other organisms, such as with the immune system, of an infected host as well as to provide targets for diagnostic and therapeutic agents.
Research described in this thesis focused on fungal GSL structure and biosynthesis. Two projects are described. The first was aimed at elucidating the …
High Frequency Measurements Of Soil Carbon Dioxide Flux At Harvard Forest, Stephen C. Phillips
High Frequency Measurements Of Soil Carbon Dioxide Flux At Harvard Forest, Stephen C. Phillips
Master's Theses and Capstones
Soil carbon dioxide flux was measured by automatic chambers at Harvard Forest over a four-year period, 2003-2006. The autochambers were installed along a moisture gradient from upland to wetland soils. In 2003, fluxes from the upland and mid-slope chambers exceeded the fluxes from the wetland margin. In 2004-2006, the mid-slope fluxes were significantly larger than both the upland and wetland margin chambers. The differences in flux between chamber location were most pronounced in the late summer and early fall. Residuals from a non-linear temperature regression exhibit a distinct seasonal pattern in 2003, 2004, and 2006, but not in 2005. On …
Characterization Of Public And Stakeholder Objectives In Environmental Management: The Application Of Conjoint Analysis And Other Survey Tools To The Management Of The Lamprey River, Shannon Rogers

Management plans for natural resources can be seen as multi-attribute goods that are held in the public domain and therefore require input from experts, stakeholders, and citizens. The state is coordinating an Instream flow study for the Lamprey River in the Seacoast of NH and this research adds a key component to the existing study. This thesis explains how the values and objectives of stakeholders and the general public were elicited. Fourteen stakeholders participated in an interview and survey process and 229 randomly selected residents of the Lamprey River Watershed completed surveys about they how use and value the river. …
Software Tools For Comparing Genomic Sequence, Morel Henley
Software Tools For Comparing Genomic Sequence, Morel Henley
Master's Theses and Capstones
We describe three software tools related to research in comparative genomics, a growing research area that explores the variation within and between organisms. We developed a set of tools that explore sequence similarity and differences in genomes. Two of these tools are specifically aimed at examining DNA sequence data from two or more genomes: (1) The Magenta's OPUS tool compares genomic sequences to identify shared or unique segments between closely related species. This tool looks for functional similarities and differences in genomic data by classifying sequences into groups based on genomic categories: Orthologs, Paralogs, and Unique Sequence. (2) The DSNP …
Invasion Of Transition Hardwood Forests By Exotic Rhamnus Frangula: Chronology And Site Requirements, Hanna S. Wingard
Invasion Of Transition Hardwood Forests By Exotic Rhamnus Frangula: Chronology And Site Requirements, Hanna S. Wingard
Master's Theses and Capstones
The invasion chronology and site requirements of the exotic, invasive shrub, glossy buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula), were studied within intact transition hardwood---hemlock---white pine forests in Durham, NH. Data were collected from 63 plots (7 sites with 9 plots each). Within sites, plots were arranged over a topographic gradient with 3 plots in each of 3 topographic positions (upper, middle, and lower slope). From each plot, information on soil nutrients and texture, soil moisture, overstory community composition, and canopy openness was collected. Densities of R. frangula in two size classes (≥1 m in height, <1 m in height) within each plot were calculated. Morphological data (height, diameter at stem base, number of live and dead stems, and age) were collected from each individual ≥1 m tall. R. frangula invaded these intact, closed-canopy forests over 30 years ago and the invasion has continued, with population density increasing over time. Nominal logistic regression suggested that site, topographic position, and overstory community type played a role in whether or not R. frangula was present in a plot. Plots on upper slopes dominated by Tsuga canadensis were less likely to become invaded than other plots. Multiple linear regression showed that density of R. frangula (≥1 m) increased with time since invasion and increasing soil quality. Density of R. frangula (<1 m) was positively influenced by time since invasion, canopy openness, and density of R. frangula (≥1 m). Multiple regressions also showed that mean age and age of oldest R. frangula per plot were higher in plots with higher soil moisture content. Size of R. frangula individuals (i.e. height, diameter) generally increased with mean age of stems. The results show that successional, transition hardwood forests can be invaded by R. frangula and should not be overlooked when managing against this species. Special attention should be given to low topographic positions and areas with rich soils, while upland areas with dense hemlock canopy are much less likely to experience heavy invasion by R. frangula..
Can Plant Competition And Diversity Reduce The Success Of Exotic Phragmites Australis Invading A Salt Marsh?, Christopher R. Peter
Can Plant Competition And Diversity Reduce The Success Of Exotic Phragmites Australis Invading A Salt Marsh?, Christopher R. Peter
Master's Theses and Capstones
The rapid proliferation of invasive Phragmites australis in New England has challenged resource managers to curb its expansion and reduce the loss of functional salt marsh. The interactive effects of sediment elevation, nutrient additions and community structure (plant competition and diversity) on the success and health of Phragmites were examined within a salt marsh in Hampton, NH. Along with four native halophytes, Phragmites was transplanted to vegetation plots (0.09 m2) comprising three community structure types (Phragmites alone, PA+1sp., PA+4spp.). Plots were arranged across elevation and nutrient enrichment gradients. Elevation and fertilization had no effect on Phragmites success, likely due to …
Generation And Measurement Of Surface Plasmon Coupled Emission, Kathleen E. Hamilton
Generation And Measurement Of Surface Plasmon Coupled Emission, Kathleen E. Hamilton
Master's Theses and Capstones
Surface plasmon coupled emission (SPCE) is a process by which isotropic fluorescent emission, from a fluorescent dye or biological agent labeled with a fluorescent dye, is channeled into highly directional emission. This process relies on the interaction between fluorescent dye molecules and thin silver films in close proximity to each other. Recent studies have shown that SPCE greatly increases the sensitivity of spectroscopic methods by increasing the amount of light that can be collected from a fluorescent molecule. The work described in this thesis encompasses the study of new materials for SPCE sample manufacture as well as the design and …
Constitutive Expression Of Jagged-1 In 3t3-L1 Preadipocytes Suppresses Adipogenesis And Adipose Tissue Development, Jennifer Allen
Constitutive Expression Of Jagged-1 In 3t3-L1 Preadipocytes Suppresses Adipogenesis And Adipose Tissue Development, Jennifer Allen
Master's Theses and Capstones
The Notch signaling pathway regulates adipogenesis. To determine specific effects the Notch ligand Jagged-1 has on the regulation of adipogenesis, we transfected 3T3-L1 preadipocytes with either a constitutively expressed full-length human Jagged-1 construct or an empty vector control. These cells were grown in conditions promoting differentiation and then evaluated for lipid accumulation and gene expression. To test the role of Jagged-1 in adipose tissue development in vivo, transfected cells were examined for their ability to form fat pads after injection into nude mice. In vitro, cells constitutively expressing Jagged-1 accumulated less lipid and exhibited a delay in adipocyte protein expression. …
Trends In Wintertime Climate Variability In The Northeastern United States, Elizabeth Ann Burakowski
Trends In Wintertime Climate Variability In The Northeastern United States, Elizabeth Ann Burakowski
Master's Theses and Capstones
Humans experience climate variability and climate change primarily through changes in weather at local and regional scales. In this work, changes in northeastern United States winter climate are documented using meteorological observations from 1965-2005. Spatial coherence analysis is utilized to remove stations with non-climatic influences from the analysis. Trends over the past four decades in snowfall, snow-covered days, mean, minimum, and maximum temperature are estimated using linear regression.
Northeastern United States regional winter maximum temperatures (+0.43 +/-.08°C/decade) are warming greater rate than minimum (+0.37 +/-0.10°C/decade) and mean (+0.39 +/-0.10°C/decade). Regional winter snowfall decreased by -2.5 +/-0.8 inches/decade. Overall snowfall decreases …

Attachment Bond, Parental Death, And Parental Divorce As Predictive Variables Of Depression, Jason R. Baker
Master's Theses and Capstones
Discussions regarding the topics of attachment and loss are ubiquitous and cannot be avoided. Losing a loved one---especially a parent---to death or divorce is difficult at any age, perhaps most difficult during the age of adolescence. Depression is a common product of such loss. A study was conducted that attempted to look at the quality of attachment between the child and primary caregiver, along with the any possible parent loss, and their implications for the prevalence of depression. Data on 170 students at a major university in the Northeast was collected. A moderately strong negative correlation existed between attachment and …

The purpose of this research study was to investigate the relationship between traditional gender socialization and self-concept during adolescence, in the domains of athletic competence, physical appearance, social competence, and close friendship.
The sample used in the study consisted of 33 eighth graders, of which 19 were female and 14 were male. Participants completed an instrument developed by the researcher to measure level of gender socialization, along with Harter's (1988) Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents (SPPA) to measure self-concept in the above-referenced domains.
The Mann-Whitney U-Test was used to test distributions of means. Results were not statistically significant and therefore failed …
Knowledge And Perceptions Of "Cyberterrorism", Andrew J. Van Hoogenstyn
Knowledge And Perceptions Of "Cyberterrorism", Andrew J. Van Hoogenstyn
Master's Theses and Capstones
While the threat of terrorists utilizing the Internet to execute a cyberterrorist attack is of prominent concern there exist great misconceptions and factual errors in the media as to the nature of this threat (Conway, 2002; Embar-Seddon, 2002; Weimann, 2005). This thesis examined media exposure, knowledge of cyberterrorism, fear of terrorism and perceived seriousness of cyberterrorist events in a sample of college students. Generally, participants had little knowledge of cyberterrorism. Women were found to be more fearful of terrorism and cyberterrorism than men. A positive relation was found between media consumption and fear of terrorism among women. Finally, fear of …
Molecularly Imprinted Polymers For The Detection Of Caffeine In Water, Marine Barasc
Molecularly Imprinted Polymers For The Detection Of Caffeine In Water, Marine Barasc
Master's Theses and Capstones
This work investigates the potential of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) for the detection of caffeine in water samples. Different polymerization techniques were explored; namely free-radical bulk, miniemulsion and precipitation polymerization. Building the adsorption isotherms allowed determining the rebinding capacities of the resulting polymers (binding constant and number of sites). Using the nanoparticles prepared by precipitation polymerization in acetonitrile, new analytical techniques were developed. The latex was analyzed directly by High Performance Liquid Chromatography allowing fast template quantification in water samples. In addition, the nanoparticles were coated on a 5MHz microbalance quartz crystal. The bi-Langmuir isotherm allowed computing the mass uptakes …
Methyl Halide Production In Fungi, Gail D. Dailey
Methyl Halide Production In Fungi, Gail D. Dailey
Master's Theses and Capstones
Methyl halide gases are a source of halogen radicals that can react with and destroy stratospheric ozone. The sources of methyl halide gases are both anthropogenic and biogenic, that is, they are human induced and they occur naturally. This research focused on the emission of methyl betides from fungi in the phylum Basidiomycota, which are one of the known biogenic sources.
Previous studies have measured methyl halide production and consumption in soils using field chambers. The objective of this study was to compare production from individual fungi in laboratory cultures to the field measured fluxes to examine whether fungi are …
Nitrogen Loading In Coastal Watersheds Of New Hampshire: An Application Of The Sparrow Model, Kathleen A. Legere
Nitrogen Loading In Coastal Watersheds Of New Hampshire: An Application Of The Sparrow Model, Kathleen A. Legere
Master's Theses and Capstones
In coastal New Hampshire as well as throughout the world there has been an increase in Nitrogen (N) loading to coastal areas. N is considered the limiting nutrient in coastal waters and can lead to eutrophication. Understanding the sources of coastal inputs is difficult because of the many possible sources of N are found in the watershed and few are adequately sampled. Modeling is an important tool in understanding the sources of N in a watershed. In this research, the New England SPARROW (Spatially Referenced Regression on Watershed Attributes) will be applied to predict nitrogen loading in the Exeter, Oyster, …
Development Of A Numerical Model To Predict Impact Forces On A North Atlantic Right Whale During Collision With A Vessel, Jason J. Raymond
Development Of A Numerical Model To Predict Impact Forces On A North Atlantic Right Whale During Collision With A Vessel, Jason J. Raymond
Master's Theses and Capstones
The North Atlantic right whale is under a great deal of public and private concern due to their endangered status and shrinking numbers. Of the 40 animals examined post-mortem (1970-2006), 21 deaths (52.5%) were caused by vessel-whale collision injuries, such as skull fractures. Several methods have been proposed to help reduce the number of fatalities. One such method is to place restrictions on ship speed within right whale critical habitats. However, no quantitative data exist regarding the effect of reduced vessel speed on the likelihood of fatality. The objective of this study is to develop a numerical model of the …

Nest Guarding And Aggression In The Red-Backed Salamander, Plethodon Cinereus, Jan Tornick
Master's Theses and Capstones
Several environmental factors and endocrine mechanisms were examined which may affect the intensity of aggression displayed by female red-backed salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) during nest guarding. In a set of behavioral experiments, female were challenged by conspecific intruders during egg guarding and intensity of aggression was scored. Four variables were examined: (1) clutch age, (2) clutch size, (3) sex of intruder, and (4) body size of the attendant. In a second set of experiments, tissue samples were taken from challenged and unchallenged brooding females to compare testosterone (T) titers. A novel non-lethal technique was developed for extraction and assay of T …
Impact Of Predation And Hunting On Eastern Cottontail Rabbits At Cape Cod National Seashore, Massachusetts, Kelly M. Boland
Impact Of Predation And Hunting On Eastern Cottontail Rabbits At Cape Cod National Seashore, Massachusetts, Kelly M. Boland
Master's Theses and Capstones
In areas that experience environmental seasonality, wildlife populations may undergo annual declines until the capacity of the environment is reached. The degree to which hunting may influence these populations depends on whether hunting mortality is additional to natural mortality (additive) or if natural mortality decreases as hunting increases (hunting is a compensatory mortality). To comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, Cape Cod National Seashore (CCNS) initiated an examination of the current rabbit hunting program in 2004. Because of the lack of current information of rabbit hunting within CCNS, the primary objective of this study was to …

Four treatments were established, including bare ground with no black plastic (BGNP), bare ground with black plastic (BGBP), red clover with no plastic (LMNP), and red clover with black plastic (LMBP). The effects of these practices are discussed in relation to total soil C and N, N mineralization, microbial biomass, mycorrhizal root colonization, aggregation, bulk density, moisture, and pH. Tomato yield, plant N uptake, and weed emergence were also determined. Large macroaggregates …
Nanoparticle Mediated Oral Delivery Of Insulin, Etienne Cabane
Nanoparticle Mediated Oral Delivery Of Insulin, Etienne Cabane
Master's Theses and Capstones
The oral delivery of therapeutic compounds, from small molecules to proteins, is one of the most desirable routes of administration. Its advantages reside in low cost, patient compliance and ease of use. The major challenge associated to such a delivery route is the transport through the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). In the case of complex and fragile molecules such as proteins, this particular step is the source of multiple challenges. Among the approaches developed to protect the therapeutic compound, the use of polymeric carriers is the most promising. We developed biocompatible and biodegradable polymersomes formed by the self assembly of amphiphilic …
Blending Techniques For Underwater Photomosaics, Fan Gu
Blending Techniques For Underwater Photomosaics, Fan Gu
Master's Theses and Capstones
The creation of consistent underwater photomosaics is typically hampered by local misalignments and inhomogeneous illumination of the image frames, which introduce visible seams that complicate post processing of the mosaics for object recognition and shape extraction. In this thesis, methods are proposed to improve blending techniques for underwater photomosaics and the results are compared with traditional methods. Five specific techniques drawn from various areas of image processing, computer vision, and computer graphics have been tested: illumination correction based on the median mosaic, thin plate spline warping, perspective warping, graph-cut applied in the gradient domain and in the wavelet domain. A …

Evaluation Of A Putative Entomopathogenic Caenorhabditis (Nematoda: Rhabditid) And Associated Serratia (Proteobacteria: Enterobacteriaceae), Kaitlin M. Bonner
Master's Theses and Capstones
A major goal of modern biology is to extend our understanding of biological systems investigated in the laboratory to their ecological and evolutionary context. With extensive understanding of the function, development and genetics of C. elegans, exploring the link between this laboratory model and the environment in which this system evolved would be very interesting because very little is known about the natural history of this premier model organism.
A new strain of Caenorhabditis briggsae (SoAf) with an associated bacterium, Serratia sp. SCBI, has been isolated from South Africa using common entomopathogenic nematode trapping methods. This study taxonomically identified and …
