Rational Risk/Benefit Analysis Of Genetically Modified Crops, Stanley P. Kowalski Jan 2007

Rational Risk/Benefit Analysis Of Genetically Modified Crops, Stanley P. Kowalski

Law Faculty Scholarship

Safety concerns over the use of molecular biotechnology in the improvement of crops has generated substantial, heated and confusing debates, often driven by ideology and hysterics. Modification of crops is not new, and biotechnology (in its broadest sense) has been used for over a century to accelerate the development of new crops for food, feed and fibre, so as to meet the demands of a growing global community. The introduction of crops developed via molecular biotechnology [Genetically Modified Crops (GMCs)] represents the latest step in this inexorable innovative progression of technology. However, misinformed concern has led to a broad embrace …

Ip And The Global Public Interest: Challenges And Opportunities, Jon R. Cavicchi, Stanley P. Kowalski

Law Faculty Scholarship

[Excerpt from article] Intellectual property (IP) capacity is essential for economic development, particularly as countries transition into the higher technology sectors, for example biotechnology. For developing countries, a commitment to minimal IP rights protection will determine inclusion in the World Trade Organization (WTO), facilitate access to foreign-direct investment, and accelerate economic development. However, on a more fundamental level, capacity in IP management will affect whether a country can provide basic health and nutritional needs for its citizens. For example, sustainable food security presents a serious challenge in many developing countries; as their economies rapidly emerge, urban centers expand, arable land …

Standing Closest To The Flame: Community Wildfire Planning And The Healthy Forest Act, William E. Fleeger Jan 2007

Standing Closest To The Flame: Community Wildfire Planning And The Healthy Forest Act, William E. Fleeger

Doctoral Dissertations

Recently, national fire policy has been redirected from a primary focus on suppression towards a more integrated and comprehensive approach developed at the community level. As part of this policy shift, Congress passed the Healthy Forest Restoration Act (P.L. 108-148) in 2003 encouraging communities to develop community wildfire protection plans (CWPPs) to guide fuel reduction and wildfire mitigation efforts on both federal and nonfederal lands. This research examines U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and community collaboration in the development of CWPPs through a case study analysis of four communities in two western states. The social and decision-making processes used in the …

Parental Emotion Coaching: How Does It Relate To Attachment, Anger, Assertiveness, And Conflict Management?, Ines S. Cofrin Jan 2007

Parental Emotion Coaching: How Does It Relate To Attachment, Anger, Assertiveness, And Conflict Management?, Ines S. Cofrin

Doctoral Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship between participants' retrospective reports of parental emotion coaching (EC) and emotion dismissing (ED) and participants' anger, romantic attachment, assertiveness, and conflict management. EC and ED were assessed by a retrospective self-report developed by the author (RECS; Kroll, 2002), based on Gottman's theory (Gottman, Katz, & Hooven, 1996). Results suggested that for most analyses, EC and ED correlated significantly with all outcome variables, even after controlling for attachment and caregiver emotional stability. Retrospective EC and ED were also assessed directly from primary caregivers through a mailed survey, and correlated with participants' reports of EC and ED. …
