Ice Storm Effects On The Canopy Structure Of A Northern Hardwood Forest After 8 Years, Brian C. Weeks, Steven P. Hamburg, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur
Ice Storm Effects On The Canopy Structure Of A Northern Hardwood Forest After 8 Years, Brian C. Weeks, Steven P. Hamburg, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur
All Materials
Ice storms can cause severe damage to forest canopies, resulting in differential mortality among tree species and size classes and leading to long-lasting changes in the vertical structure and composition of the forest. An intense ice storm in 1998 damaged large areas of the northern hardwood forest, including much of the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire (USA). Following up on detailed poststorm assessments, we measured changes in the vertical structure of the forest canopy 8 years poststorm. We focused on how the presence of disease-induced advance regeneration of American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.) has affected canopy structure in the …

Town Of Sandown Wetland Evaluation Report, West Environmental
PREP Reports & Publications
Barrington is very fortunate to have an abundance and wide variety of natural resources. Given the Town’s location in the fast-growing seacoast region of New Hampshire, development can be expected to place increasing pressures on the Town and its natural resource base. As described throughout this Natural Resources Inventory, there are many natural resources, special habitats and ecosystems that are valuable and worthy of further consideration for further study, preservation and/or active management. Current zoning ordinances and land use regulations provide some protections. However, the Town can take several additional approaches to maintain and protect its rural character, and itsspecial …

Selective logging is an extensive land use in the Brazilian Amazon region. The soil–atmosphere fluxes of nitrous oxide (N2O), nitric oxide (NO), methane (CH4), and carbon dioxide (CO2) are studied on two soil types (clay Oxisol and sandy loam Ultisol) over two years (2000–01) in both undisturbed forest and forest recently logged using reduced impact forest management in the Tapajos National Forest, near Santarem, Para, Brazil. In undisturbed forest, annual soil–atmosphere fluxes of N2O (mean ± standard error) were 7.9 ± 0.7 and 7.0 ± 0.6 ng N cm−2 h−1 for the Oxisol and 1.7 ± 0.1 and 1.6 ± …

Dynamics Of Wind-Driven Upwelling And Relaxation Between Monterey Bay And Point Arena: Local-, Regional-, And Gyre-Scale Controls, James M. Pringle, Edward P. Dever
Dynamics Of Wind-Driven Upwelling And Relaxation Between Monterey Bay And Point Arena: Local-, Regional-, And Gyre-Scale Controls, James M. Pringle, Edward P. Dever
Earth Sciences
In north and central California, equatorward winds drive equatorward flows and the upwelling of cold dense water over the shelf during the midspring and summer upwelling season. When the winds temporarily weaken, the upwelling flows between Point Reyes and Point Arena "relax,'' becoming strongly poleward over the shelf. Analytical and numerical models are used to describe the effect of alongshore variability of winds, bathymetry, and basin-scale pressure gradients on the strength of upwelling and its relaxation. Alongshore winds weaken to the south of Point Reyes, and the shelf becomes narrower from Point Reyes to Monterey Bay. Both of these lead …

Nutrient Allocations And Metabolism In Two Collembolans With Contrasting Reproduction And Growth Strategies, Thomas Larsen, Marc Ventura, Christian Damgaard, Erik A. Hobbie, Paul Henning Krogh
Nutrient Allocations And Metabolism In Two Collembolans With Contrasting Reproduction And Growth Strategies, Thomas Larsen, Marc Ventura, Christian Damgaard, Erik A. Hobbie, Paul Henning Krogh
Faculty Publications
Physiological mechanisms such as allocation and release of nutrients are keys to understanding an animal's adaptation to a particular habitat. This study investigated how two detrivores with contrasting life‐history traits allocated carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) to growth, reproduction and metabolism. As model organisms we used the collembolans, Proisotoma minuta (Tullberg 1871) and Protaphorura fimata (Gisin 1952).
To estimate allocations of C and N in tissue, we changed the isotopic composition of the animal's yeast diets when they became sexually mature and followed isotope turnover in tissue, growth and reproduction for 28 days. In addition, we measured the composition of …

Crop Bioengineering: Enormous Potential For Catalyzing International Development, Peter Gregory, Stanley P. Kowalski
Crop Bioengineering: Enormous Potential For Catalyzing International Development, Peter Gregory, Stanley P. Kowalski
Law Faculty Scholarship
[Excerpt] Bioengineering provides unique and dramatic opportunities for crop improvement. It can be used to develop crop varieties that would otherwise be unavailable and can facilitate much faster and more precise ways of developing improved varieties. It can help to increase yields and reliability and thus reduce food costs for the consumer while helping to control input costs for farmers through reduced applications of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizer.
The extent to which this will be achieved depends on how effectively the global scientific community – including both the public and private sectors – can cooperate in harnessing the power of …

Forest Disturbance And Recovery: A General Review In The Context Of Spaceborne Remote Sensing Of Impacts On Aboveground Biomass And Canopy Structure, Steve Frolking, Michael W. Palace, D B. Clark, Jeffrey Q. Chambers, H H. Shugart, George C. Hurtt
Earth Sciences
Abrupt forest disturbances generating gaps >0.001 km2 impact roughly 0.4–0.7 million km2a−1. Fire, windstorms, logging, and shifting cultivation are dominant disturbances; minor contributors are land conversion, flooding, landslides, and avalanches. All can have substantial impacts on canopy biomass and structure. Quantifying disturbance location, extent, severity, and the fate of disturbed biomass will improve carbon budget estimates and lead to better initialization, parameterization, and/or testing of forest carbon cycle models. Spaceborne remote sensing maps large-scale forest disturbance occurrence, location, and extent, particularly with moderate- and fine-scale resolution passive optical/near-infrared (NIR) instruments. High-resolution remote sensing (e.g., ∼1 …

Minimizing Vessel Strikes To Endangered Whales: A Crash Course In Conservation Science And Policy, David N. Wiley, Moira W. Brown
Minimizing Vessel Strikes To Endangered Whales: A Crash Course In Conservation Science And Policy, David N. Wiley, Moira W. Brown
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
The North Atlantic right whale is one of the most endangered of all large whales: about 350-400 individuals remain. Species recovery is, in part, contingent on reducing vessel-strike mortality. Our science-based conservation program resulted in three efforts specifically designed to minimize the risk of lethal vessel-strikes of endangered baleen whales without compromising vessel navigation and safety. In Atlantic Canada, the Bay of Fundy Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) was relocated to reduce the risk of lethal vessel strikes by 90% where the original outbound lane of the TSS intersected the Right Whale Conservation Area, and an Area To Be Avoided (ATBA) …

Assessing Access Of Galactic Cosmic Rays At Moon's Orbit, Chia-Lin L. Huang, Harlan E. Spence, B. T. Kress
Physics & Astronomy
[1] Characterizing the lunar radiation environment is essential for preparing future robotic and human explorations on lunar bases. Galactic cosmic rays (GCR) represent one source of ionizing radiation at the Moon that poses a biological risk. Because GCR are charged particles, their paths are affected by the magnetic fields along their trajectories. Unlike the Earth, the Moon has no strong, shielding magnetic field of its own. However, as it orbits Earth, the Moon traverses not only the weak interplanetary magnetic field but also the distant magnetic tail of Earth's magnetosphere. We combine an empirical magnetic field model of Earth's magnetosphere …

Behavior Of First-Year College Students, Kristin Kashgegian
Perspectives
This is a quantitative study of depression, self-esteem, smoking and drinking behaviors among first year college students. The study results from a sample of 170 first year undergraduate students at the University of New Hampshire. Using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale, and the Short Alcohol Dependence Data (SADD) scale, results show that sex significantly predicts depression, even when controlling for self-esteem, alcohol scale scores, and smoking. Being female is associated with higher depression scores. When measuring self-esteem, results show that self-esteem is significantly associated with depression. Lower self-esteem is significantly associated with higher depression. Results …

Familicide: Risk Factors, Characteristics Of The Offender, Characteristics Of The Crime Of Familicide, And The Prevalence Of Suicide Following Familicide, Valerie R. Barthell, Kathleen M. Shelton
Perspectives
This study will be examining the risk factors to familicide, the characteristics of the offenders of familicide, the characteristics of the crime, and the prevalence of suicide following familicide. Of the literature reviewed it has been found that there are risk factors to familicide, there are known characteristics of the crime of familicide, and suicide is prevalent following familicide (Wilson et at., 1995; Brewer & Paulsen, 1999; Harper &Voigt, 2007). Findings are expected to suggest that there will be a higher proportion of cases in which the offender felt as though they were under immense stress due to the stresses …

Deep In Guyland: College Age Guys With Adhd Speak On Facebook, James D. Blauvelt
Perspectives
Michael Kimmel’s book Guyland has been touted as a must read look into the secret lives of guys, the next step to understanding the troubled generation of college age guys. After reading the book I found I had insight into many things in my life that I had never really stopped to analyze. It also left me with unanswered questions, which were spawned mostly from one sentence in the book. “No wonder Guys… are six times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than girls.”(Kimmel pg.54). As a college age guy with ADHD, I can say with certainty that it …
