Casuarina Root Exudates Alter The Physiology, Surface Properties, And Plant Infectivity Of Frankia Sp. Strain Cci3, Nicholas J. Beauchemin, Teal Furnholm, Julien Lavenus, Sergio Svistoonoff, Patrick Doumas, Didier Bogusz, Laurent Laplaze, Louis S. Tisa

Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences

The actinomycete genus Frankia forms nitrogen-fixing symbioses with 8 different families of actinorhizal plants, representing more than 200 different species. Very little is known about the initial molecular interactions between Frankia and host plants in the rhizosphere. Root exudates are important in Rhizobium-legume symbiosis, especially for initiating Nod factor synthesis. We measured differences in Frankia physiology after exposure to host aqueous root exudates to assess their effects on actinorhizal symbioses. Casuarina cunninghamiana root exudates were collected from plants under nitrogen-sufficient and -deficient conditions and tested on Frankia sp. strain CcI3. Root exudates increased the growth yield of Frankia in the …

Revisiting Maine’S Lobster Commons: Rescaling Political Subjects, Jennifer F. Brewer Jan 2012

Revisiting Maine’S Lobster Commons: Rescaling Political Subjects, Jennifer F. Brewer

Geography

Calls for cross-scalar theoretical and methodological approaches are not new to commons scholarship. Such efforts might be hastened by channelling poststructuralist and critical theory perspectives through the geographic subfield of political ecology, including attention to political scales and subjects. Toward this end, this paper reconsiders Maine’s lobster fishery. This case has provided rich material for watershed commons scholarship, demonstrating the ability of social groups to conserve resources independent of government or markets, and it continues to offer new findings. Recent fieldwork shows that as lobster boat captains advance collective interests through state-supported co-management governance arrangements, concerns of crew and non-fishing …

Is It Time To Forget Science? Reflections On Singular Science And Its History, Jan V. Golinski Jan 2012

Is It Time To Forget Science? Reflections On Singular Science And Its History, Jan V. Golinski

History

The name history of science refl ects a set of assumptions about what science is. Among them is the claim that science is a singular thing, a potentially unifi ed group of disciplines that share a common identity. Long promoted by scientists and philosophers on the basis of a supposedly universal scientifi c method, this claim now looks very embattled. I trace its development from the early nineteenth century and the growth of the positivist movement to its various manifestations in the twentieth century. Recently, some historians have called for the term science to be relinquished, and for adoption of …

Patterns Of Anxiety Symptoms In Toddlers And Preschool-Age Children: Evidence Of Early Differentiation, Nicholas D. Mian, Leandra Godoy, Margaret J. Briggs-Gowan, Alice S. Carter Jan 2012

Patterns Of Anxiety Symptoms In Toddlers And Preschool-Age Children: Evidence Of Early Differentiation, Nicholas D. Mian, Leandra Godoy, Margaret J. Briggs-Gowan, Alice S. Carter

Life Sciences Faculty Scholarship

The degree to which young children’s anxiety symptoms differentiate according to diagnostic groupings is under-studied, especially in children below the age of 4 years. Theoretical (confirmatory factor analysis, CFA) and statistical (exploratory factor analysis, EFA) analytical methods were employed to test the hypothesis that anxiety symptoms among 2–3-year-old children from a non-clinical, representative sample would differentiate in a manner consistent with current diagnostic nosology. Anxiety symptom items were selected from two norm-referenced parent-report scales of child behavior. CFA and EFA results suggested that anxiety symptoms aggregate in a manner consistent with generalized anxiety, obsessive–compulsive symptoms, separation anxiety, and social phobia. …

Evaluation Of Rockfish Abundance In Untrawlable Habitat: Combining Acoustic And Complementary Sampling Tools, Darin Jones, Christopher D. Wilson, Alex De Robertis, Chris Rooper, Thomas C. Weber, John L. Butler

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

—Rockfishes (Sebastes spp.) are an important component of North Pacific marine ecosystems and commercial fisheries. Because the rocky, high-relief substrate that rockfishes often inhabit is inaccessible to standard survey trawls, population abundance assessments for many rockfish species are difficult. As part of a large study to classify substrate and compare complementary sampling tools, we investigated the feasibility of using an acoustic survey in conjunction with a lowered stereo-video camera, a remotely operated vehicle, and a modified bottom trawl to estimate rockfish biomass in untrawlable habitat. The Snakehead Bank south of Kodiak Island, Alaska, was surveyed repeatedly over 4 days and …

Cavity Ring Down: Construction, Validation And Experiments Measuring The Optical Extinction Of Pure Clays And Their Mixtures With Salts And Carboxylic Acids Under A Range Of Atmospherically Relevant Conditions, Alexis Rae Attwood Jan 2012

Cavity Ring Down: Construction, Validation And Experiments Measuring The Optical Extinction Of Pure Clays And Their Mixtures With Salts And Carboxylic Acids Under A Range Of Atmospherically Relevant Conditions, Alexis Rae Attwood

Doctoral Dissertations

Aerosols interact directly with solar radiation by scattering and absorbing incident light to affect the Earth's climate system. Models indicate that aerosols cool the Earth counterbalancing greenhouse gases, but contribute the largest uncertainty to anthropogenic effects on climate. To address these uncertainties, a cavity ring down spectrometer (CRD) was built and performance tests were conducted to validate its capabilities for measuring optical properties of laboratory generated, atmospherically relevant aerosols over a range of conditions. The CRD provides an absolute and unbiased in situ measurement of total extinction and can reduce uncertainties associated with aerosols having unusual chemical and physical properties. …

The Impact Of Seasonal Movements By Ovigerous American Lobsters (Homarus Americanus) On Egg Development And Larval Release, Jason Seth Goldstein Jan 2012

The Impact Of Seasonal Movements By Ovigerous American Lobsters (Homarus Americanus) On Egg Development And Larval Release, Jason Seth Goldstein

Doctoral Dissertations

The American lobster (Homarus americanus) supports one of the most economically successful fisheries in the Gulf of Maine. The continued success of this fishery is attributed in part to vigilant broodstock conservation through the preservation of ovigerous (egg-bearing) females. Previous studies of ovigerous lobster movements indicate that some, if not most, display seasonal inshore-to-offshore movement patterns. While it has been assumed that these movements serve to expose eggs to thermal regimes that are optimal for development, this theory has never been rigorously tested. In Chapter 1, I present results from ultrasonic tracking studies designed to determine if lobsters in coastal …

Calcium Homeostasis In Escherichia Coli, Muhammad Arif Jan 2012

Calcium Homeostasis In Escherichia Coli, Muhammad Arif

Doctoral Dissertations

While the role of calcium ions as secondary chemical messengers has been well described in eukaryotic cells, little is known about calcium homeostasis in bacteria at the physiological and molecular level. No calcium influx gene has been identified so far. This dissertation focuses on calcium regulation of gene expression by (i) determining the effects of elevated and depleted calcium levels on global gene expression in wild-type cells (MG1655), (ii) employing transposon mutants (calcium-sensitive) and mutants that are defective in calcium transport, and (iii) performing quantitative analysis of a specific subset of 15 genes to elucidate their possible involvement in calcium …

Effects Of Nitrogen-Fixing Symbiotic Cyanobacteria On The Microbial Ecology Of The Coral, Montastraea Cavernosa, Jessica K. Jarett Jan 2012

Effects Of Nitrogen-Fixing Symbiotic Cyanobacteria On The Microbial Ecology Of The Coral, Montastraea Cavernosa, Jessica K. Jarett

Doctoral Dissertations

Corals form the physical structure of coral reefs, one of the most ecologically and economically important ecosystems in the world. The abundant and broadly distributed Caribbean coral Montastraea cavernosa forms a symbiosis with intracellular nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria in some, but not all colonies, which make up approximately 30% of the population and display a characteristic orange fluorescence. Diverse and functionally important microbial communities of dinoflagellates, bacteria, Archaea, viruses, fungi, and other organisms are also associated with corals and together with the host compose what is termed the coral holobiont. Whether the cyanobacteria are mutualists, commensals, or parasites, and their effects on …

The Role Of Red-Backed Salamanders In Ecosystems, Daniel J. Hocking Jan 2012

The Role Of Red-Backed Salamanders In Ecosystems, Daniel J. Hocking

Doctoral Dissertations

Ecosystems provide a vast array of services that benefit human societies, which can be divided into provisioning, regulating, cultural, and supporting services. Amphibians provide provisioning services in the form of food and use in medical advances. As one of the major vertebrate groups, amphibians also play an important part in cultures throughout the world. Finally, amphibians can be extremely abundant and play important roles in ecosystem supporting services, including altering both physical structure and ecosystem functions. In aquatic systems, tadpoles can alter sedimentation, water clarity, and filamentous algae growth. Additionally, amphibians affect ecosystem functions, including nutrient cycling, decomposition, and primary …

Tracking Environmental Trends In The Great Bay Estuarine System: An Examination Of Water Quality And Nuisance Macroalgal Blooms, Jeremy C. Nettleton Jan 2012

Tracking Environmental Trends In The Great Bay Estuarine System: An Examination Of Water Quality And Nuisance Macroalgal Blooms, Jeremy C. Nettleton

Doctoral Dissertations

Monitoring macroalgae populations is an effective means of detecting long term water quality changes in estuarine systems. To investigate the environmental status of New Hampshire's Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, this study assessed the abundance/distribution of macrophytes, particularly Gracilaria and Ulva species, relative to eutrophication patterns; compared historical (1970s-1990s) and current algal biomass/cover at several sites; and compared Ulva and Gracilaria tissue N/P content to ambient and historical levels. Nitrogen and phosphorus testing revealed that the estuarine system has become eutrophic, and Ulva and Gracilaria biomass/cover have increased significantly. The percent cover of Ulva species, at seasonal maxima, was …

The duration of this study allowed for seasonal and inter-annual comparisons. Seasonally, Hg wet deposition …

Ecological Effects Of Ditching And Ditch-Plugging In New England Salt Marshes, Robert E. Vincent Jan 2012

Ecological Effects Of Ditching And Ditch-Plugging In New England Salt Marshes, Robert E. Vincent

Doctoral Dissertations

Anthropogenic activities in New England salt marshes have altered hydrologic flows in various ways, but unintended consequences from some of these habitat modifications have received little attention. Specifically, ditches have existed on salt marshes for decades, but the effects of these hydrologic alterations are only poorly understood. Ditch-plugging is a more recent methodology used for salt marsh habitat enhancement and mosquito control, but the long-term effects from this management practice are also unclear. I used natural tidal creeks and pools as controls to examine the effects resulting from ditching and plugging, respectively, on hydrology, soil characteristics, marsh surface elevation, plant …
