Sediment Mixing In The Tropical Pacific And Radiolarian Stratigraphy, Ted C. Moore Jr, Larry A. Mayer, Mitchell Lyle Aug 2012

Sediment Mixing In The Tropical Pacific And Radiolarian Stratigraphy, Ted C. Moore Jr, Larry A. Mayer, Mitchell Lyle

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The reworking of older radiolarian microfossils into near-surface sediments of the tropical Pacific has long been the source of confusion for the development of radiolarian stratigraphy and of puzzlement over the mechanism(s) that could effect such pervasive reworking. Widespread dissolution “pits” in the sediments of the tropical Pacific are believed to be associated with hydrothermal circulation cells in the older oceanic crust and are here linked to processes which expose older sections and inject older non-carbonate material into near-bottom waters. Discharging waters of these circulation cells tend to dissolve carbonate in near-surface sediments; thus, only the non-carbonate material (including radiolarians) …

Identification Of Ebs1, Lsm6 And Nup159 As Suppressors Of Spt10 Effects At Adh2 In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Suggests Post-Transcriptional Defects Affect Mrna Synthesis, Bradley Anderson, Carrie Ann May, Clyde L. Denis

New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications

Suppression of the effects of an spt10 mutation on ADH2 expression is a phenotype shared by a small number of genes whose protein products are either components of the CCR4-NOT complex required for mRNA deadenylation and degradation (CCR4, CAF1, NOT4) or have been shown to interact with the complex (DBF2, SRB9, SRB10). In this work, we conducted a screen for additional suppressors of spt10 at ADH2 to identify new factors related to CCR4 function. In addition to reisolating ccr4 and caf1 alleles, three previously unidentified suppressors …

Shellfish Tissue Monitoring In Piscataqua Region Estuaries 2010 And 2011, New Hampshire Department Of Environmental Services, Matthew A. Wood, Philip R. Trowbridge

PREP Reports & Publications

The goal of this project was to provide data for two PREP indicators of estuarine condition: TOX1 and TOX3. These two indicators report on “Shellfish tissue concentrations relative to FDA standards” and “Trends in shellfish tissue contaminant concentrations”, respectively. Both of these indicators depend on data from the Gulfwatch Program. In particular, TOX3 requires annual data at benchmark sites to assess trends. In 2010 and 2011, PREP supported the collection and analysis of tissue samples from benchmark mussel sites in Hampton-Seabrook Harbor and Dover Point.

Climate Ready Estuaries - Coast In Action: 2012 Projects From Maine And New Hampshire, S. Merrill, P. Kirshen, D. Yakovleff, S. Lloyd, C. Keeley, B. Hill

PREP Reports & Publications

In summer 2011 the US EPA’s Climate Ready Estuaries program awarded funds to the Casco Bay Estuary Partnership (CBEP) in Portland, Maine, and the Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership (PREP) in coastal New Hampshire, to further develop and use COAST (COastal Adaptation to Sea level rise Tool) in their sea level rise adaptation planning processes. The New England Environmental Finance Center worked with municipal staff, elected officials, and other stakeholders to select specific locations, vulnerable assets, and adaptation actions to model using COAST. The EFC then collected the appropriate base data layers, ran the COAST simulations, and provided visual, numeric, and …

The Effects Of Cytokinin On The Transcriptional Regulation Of Pin Expression In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Elizabeth Burgess Jul 2012

The Effects Of Cytokinin On The Transcriptional Regulation Of Pin Expression In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Elizabeth Burgess

Honors Theses and Capstones

The processes of cell division and differentiation are critical to the development of any multicellular organism. During the formation of plant roots these processes take place at a region of the root tip called the meristem. Cytokinin and auxin are two plant growth hormones that influence this process. Although these two growth hormones are both necessary they also appear in many ways to have an antagonistic relationship. As meristematic root cells undergo differentiation they cease dividing. It has been proposed that the size of the root meristem and thus the overall rate of root growth are determined by the balance …

Comparative Growth And Survival Of Juvenile Atlantic Cod (Gadus Morhua)Cultured In Copper And Nylon Net Pens, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Michael D. Chambers, Jon Bunker, William Hunting Howell

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

Bio-fouling on net pens has been a major concern for the marine aquaculture industry. As cage systems increase in size, so does the surface area for the attachment of colonial organisms that create drag on the net, reduce water flow important to fish health, and increase operational expenses due to net cleaning. To solve this problem, the International Copper Association (ICA) has been developing copper alloy netting for sea cages. Copper netting has unique properties that minimize bio-fouling, reduce the risk of fish escapement, prevent predators from entering the net pen, and is recyclable. To test the alloy netting, an …

Historic baselines are important in developing our understanding of ecosystems in the face of rapid global change. While a number of studies have sought to determine changes in extent of exploited habitats over historic timescales, few have quantified such changes prior to late twentieth century baselines. Here, we present, to our knowledge, the first ever large-scale quantitative assessment of the extent and biomass of marine habitat-forming species over a 100-year time frame. We examined records of wild native oyster abundance in the United States from a historic, yet already exploited, baseline between 1878 and 1935 (predominantly 1885–1915), and a current …

Dramatic Shifts In Benthic Microbial Eukaryote Communities Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Holly M. Bik, Kenneth M. Halanych, Jyotsna Sharma, W. Kelley Thomas Jun 2012

Dramatic Shifts In Benthic Microbial Eukaryote Communities Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Holly M. Bik, Kenneth M. Halanych, Jyotsna Sharma, W. Kelley Thomas

Hubbard Center for Genome Studies (HCGS)

Benthic habitats harbour a significant (yet unexplored) diversity of microscopic eukaryote taxa, including metazoan phyla, protists, algae and fungi. These groups are thought to underpin ecosystem functioning across diverse marine environments. Coastal marine habitats in the Gulf of Mexico experienced visible, heavy impacts following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, yet our scant knowledge of prior eukaryotic biodiversity has precluded a thorough assessment of this disturbance. Using a marker gene and morphological approach, we present an intensive evaluation of microbial eukaryote communities prior to and following oiling around heavily impacted shorelines. Our results show significant changes in community structure, …

High Resolution Mapping Of Peatland Hydroperiod At A High-Latitude Swedish Mire, Nathan Torbick, Andreas Persson, David Olefeldt, Steve Frolking, William A. Salas, Stephen Hagen, P Crill, Changsheng Li Jun 2012

High Resolution Mapping Of Peatland Hydroperiod At A High-Latitude Swedish Mire, Nathan Torbick, Andreas Persson, David Olefeldt, Steve Frolking, William A. Salas, Stephen Hagen, P Crill, Changsheng Li

Earth Sciences

Monitoring high latitude wetlands is required to understand feedbacks between terrestrial carbon pools and climate change. Hydrological variability is a key factor driving biogeochemical processes in these ecosystems and effective assessment tools are critical for accurate characterization of surface hydrology, soil moisture, and water table fluctuations. Operational satellite platforms provide opportunities to systematically monitor hydrological variability in high latitude wetlands. The objective of this research application was to integrate high temporal frequency Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and high spatial resolution Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) observations to assess hydroperiod at a mire in northern Sweden. Geostatistical and polarimetric (PLR) techniques …

Light Field And Water Clarity Simulation Of Natural Environments In Laboratory Conditions, Shachak Pe'eri, Glenn T. Shwaery Jun 2012

Light Field And Water Clarity Simulation Of Natural Environments In Laboratory Conditions, Shachak Pe'eri, Glenn T. Shwaery

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Simulation of natural oceanic conditions in a laboratory setting is a challenging task, especially when that environment can be miles away. We present an attempt to replicate the solar radiation expected at different latitudes with varying water clarity conditions up to 30 m in depth using a 2.5 m deep engineering tank at the University of New Hampshire. The goals of the study were: 1) to configure an underwater light source that produced an irradiance spectrum similar to natural daylight with the sun at zenith and at 60° under clear atmospheric conditions, and 2) to monitor water clarity as a …

[1] The International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO) released its first gridded bathymetric compilation in 1999. The IBCAO bathymetric portrayals have since supported a wide range of Arctic science activities, for example, by providing constraint for ocean circulation models and the means to define and formulate hypotheses about the geologic origin of Arctic undersea features. IBCAO Version 3.0 represents the largest improvement since 1999 taking advantage of new data sets collected by the circum-Arctic nations, opportunistic data collected from fishing vessels, data acquired from US Navy submarines and from research ships of various nations. Built using an improved …

Nitrogen, Phosphorus, And Suspended Solids Concentrations In Tributaries To The Great Bay Estuary Watershed In 2011, New Hampshire Department Of Environmental Services, Matthew A. Wood, Philip Trowbridge

PREP Reports & Publications

Nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment loads to the Great Bay Estuary are a growing concern. The Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership (PREP) calculates the nitrogen load from tributaries to the Great Bay Estuary for its State of the Estuaries reports. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to collect representative data on nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended sediment concentrations in tributaries to the Great Bay Estuary in 2011. The study design followed the tributary sampling design which was implemented by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services between 2001 and 2007 and by the University of New Hampshire in 2008 and 2010, so …

How Parents Influence Deviant Behavior Among Adolescents: An Analysis Of Their Family Life, Community, And Peers, Amber Carlson May 2012

How Parents Influence Deviant Behavior Among Adolescents: An Analysis Of Their Family Life, Community, And Peers, Amber Carlson

Perspectives

The goal of this literature review is to analyze the effect the family has on an adolescent’s behavior. It is believed that parents have direct and indirect control. Previous research has found that parents directly influence their childrens behavior through the parenting techniques utilized. Parental support is the largest influence on creating preferable behavior in adolescents. Along with the direct influence from parents, the parents have indirect control over the community through which the adolescents lives in and socializes with peers in. Adolescents require strong bonds in their community. Through these bonds, adolescents are watched over and other families reciprocate …
