To Tell Or Not To Tell? Youth's Responses To Unwanted Internet Experiences., Gisela Priebe, Kimberly J. Mitchell, David Finkelhor

Psychology

Abstract

This study is one of the first that investigated youth's response to unwanted Internet experiences, not only for those youth who were bothered or distressed but for all youth who reported the experience. Three types of response were examined: telling someone about the incident and ending the unwanted situation by active or passive coping. Responses to the following unwanted Internet experiences were analysed: Sexual solicitation, online harassment and unwanted exposure to pornography. The study was based on data from the Third Youth Internet Safety Survey (YISS-3), a telephone survey with a nationally representative U.S. sample of 1,560 Internet users, …

Quantifying The Loss Of A Marine Ecosystem Service: Filtration By The Eastern Oyster In Us Estuaries, Philine S. E. Zu Ermgassen, Mark D. Spalding, Raymond E. Grizzle, Robert D. Brumbaugh

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

The oyster habitat in the USA is a valuable resource that has suffered significant declines over the past century. While this loss of habitat is well documented, the loss of associated ecosystem services remains poorly quantified. Meanwhile, ecosystem service recovery has become a major impetus for restoration. Here we propose a model for estimating the volume of water filtered by oyster populations under field conditions and make estimates of the contribution of past (c. 1880–1910) and present (c. 2000–2010) oyster populations to improving water quality in 13 US estuaries. We find that filtration capacity of oysters has declined almost universally …

Late-Successional And Old-Growth Forests In The Northeastern United States: Structure, Dynamics, And Prospects For Restoration., Mark J. Ducey, John S. Gunn, Andrew A. Whitman Jan 2013

Late-Successional And Old-Growth Forests In The Northeastern United States: Structure, Dynamics, And Prospects For Restoration., Mark J. Ducey, John S. Gunn, Andrew A. Whitman

Natural Resources & the Environment

Abstract

Restoration of old-growth forest structure is an emerging silvicultural goal, especially in those regions where old-growth abundance falls below the historic range of variability. However, longitudinal studies of old-growth dynamics that can inform silvicultural and policy options are few. We analyzed the change in structure, including stand density, diameter distribution, and the abundance of large live, standing dead, and downed dead trees on 58 late-successional and old-growth plots in Maine, USA, and compared these to regional data from the U.S. Forest Inventory and Analysis program. Structural dynamics on the late-successional plots reflected orderly change associated with density-dependent growth and …

Using Valuation-Based Decision Making To Increase The Efficiency Of China's Patent Subsidy Strategies, William Murphy, John L. Orcutt Jan 2013

Using Valuation-Based Decision Making To Increase The Efficiency Of China's Patent Subsidy Strategies, William Murphy, John L. Orcutt

Law Faculty Scholarship

[Excerpt] “The Chinese government has grown concerned that its patent fee subsidy programs have not funded the most deserving patents, and thus they no longer wish to spend public resources to promote low-value patents. Instead, the government would prefer subsidy programs that encourage the most deserving patents. The Patent Strategy reflects this desire, as the fourth strategic focus of the Patent Strategy recognizes the need to “[o]ptimize [China’s] patent subsidy policy and further define the orientation to enhance patent quality.”19 This Article explains how a disciplined and transparent valuation-based decision making process can help the Chinese government design patent fee …

Genetic Privacy And The Fourth Amendment: Unregulated Surreptitious Dna Harvesting, Albert E. Scherr Jan 2013

Genetic Privacy And The Fourth Amendment: Unregulated Surreptitious Dna Harvesting, Albert E. Scherr

Law Faculty Scholarship

Genetic privacy and police practices have come to the fore in the criminal justice system. Case law and stories in the media document that police are surreptitiously harvesting the DNA of putative suspects. Some sources even indicate that surreptitious data banking may also be in its infancy. Surreptitious harvesting of out-of-body DNA by the police is currently unregulated by the Fourth Amendment. The few courts that have addressed the issue find that the police are free to harvest DNA abandoned by a putative suspect in a public place. Little in the nascent surreptitious harvesting case law suggests that surreptitious data …

Intellectual Property And Opportunities For Food Security In The Philippines, Jane Payumo, Howard Grimes, Antonio Alfonso, Stanley P. Kowalski, Keith Jones, Karim Maredia, Rodolfo Estigoy Jan 2013

Intellectual Property And Opportunities For Food Security In The Philippines, Jane Payumo, Howard Grimes, Antonio Alfonso, Stanley P. Kowalski, Keith Jones, Karim Maredia, Rodolfo Estigoy

Law Faculty Scholarship

By 2050, the Philippine population is projected to increase by as much as 41 percent, from 99.9 million to nearly 153 million people. Producing enough food for such an expanding population and achieving food security remain a challenge for the Philippine government. This paper argued that intellectual property rights (IPR) can play a key role in achieving the nation’s current goal to be food-secure and provided examples to illustrate that the presence of sound intellectual property (IP) helps foster research, development, and deployment of agricultural innovations. This paper also offered key recommendations about how the IP system can be further …

Executive Summary This report focuses on patent landscape analysis of technologies related to vaccines targeting parasitic worms, also known as helminths. These technologies include methods of formulating vaccines, methods of producing of subunits, the composition of complete vaccines, and other technologies that have the potential to aid in a global response to this pathogen. The purpose of this patent landscape study was to search, identify, and categorize patent documents that are relevant to the development of vaccines that can efficiently promote the development of protective immunity against helminths. The search strategy used keywords which the team felt would be general …

Intermittent Swim Stress Effects On Anxiety Behavior, Timothy A. Warner Jan 2013

Intermittent Swim Stress Effects On Anxiety Behavior, Timothy A. Warner

Doctoral Dissertations

Millions of Americans are suffering from depression each year, leading to a significant number of individuals who seek treatment for their ailment. However, fewer than 50 percent of depressed individuals fully recover using current methods. The comorbidity between depression and anxiety could be a contributing factor in the lower rates of recovery. The demonstrated correlation between anxiety and depression has led to the term "anxious depression," which is associated with difficulty in coping, a poorer rate of recovery, and more severe symptoms of depression. The purpose of this dissertation was to expand on an existing animal model of depression (intermittent …

Writing Assessment's "Debilitating Inheritance": Behaviorism's Dismissal Of Experience, Maja Joiwind Wilson Jan 2013

Writing Assessment's "Debilitating Inheritance": Behaviorism's Dismissal Of Experience, Maja Joiwind Wilson

Doctoral Dissertations

In this project, I examine the legacy of behaviorism's dismissal of experience on contemporary writing assessment theory and practice within the field of composition studies. I use an archival study of John B. Watson's letters to Robert Mearns Yerkes to establish behaviorism's systematic denial of experience and its related constructs: mind, consciousness, thought, emotions, purpose, and meaning. I trace this denial through the efficiency movement's effects on education and educational measurement in the early 20th century and the establishment of the behaviorist infrastructure of assessment---an infrastructure that contributed; paradoxically, to the early focus in composition studies on experience. I analyze …
