Faculty Publications

The Late Quaternary variability of the South Asian (or Indian) monsoon has been linked with glacial‐interglacial and millennial scale climatic changes but past rainfall intensity in the river catchments draining into the Andaman Sea remains poorly constrained. Here we use radiogenic Sr, Nd, and Pb isotope compositions of the detrital clay‐size fraction and clay mineral assemblages obtained from sediment core NGHP Site 17 in the Andaman Sea to reconstruct the variability of the South Asian monsoon during the past 60 kyr. Over this time interval εNd values changed little, generally oscillating between −7.3 and −5.3 and the Pb isotope signatures …

Permafrost thaw can alter the soil environment through changes in soil moisture, frequently resulting in soil saturation, a shift to anaerobic decomposition, and changes in the plant community. These changes, along with thawing of previously frozen organic material, can alter the form and magnitude of greenhouse gas production from permafrost ecosystems. We synthesized existing methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) production measurements from anaerobic incubations of boreal and tundra soils from the geographic permafrost region to evaluate large-scale controls of anaerobic CO2 and CH4 production and compare the relative importance of landscape-level factors (e.g., vegetation type and landscape position), soil …

Hessian Fly Larval Feeding Triggers Enhanced Polyamine Levels In Susceptible But Not Resistant Wheat, Subhashree Subramanyam, Nagesh Sardesai, Subhash C. Minocha, Cheng Zheng, Richard H. Shukle, Christopher B. Williams

Faculty Publications

Hessian fly (Mayetiola destructor), a member of the gall midge family, is one of the most destructive pests of wheat (Triticum aestivum) worldwide. Probing of wheat plants by the larvae results in either an incompatible (avirulent larvae, resistant plant) or a compatible (virulent larvae, susceptible plant) interaction. Virulent larvae induce the formation of a nutritive tissue, resembling the inside surface of a gall, in susceptible wheat. These nutritive cells are a rich source of proteins and sugars that sustain the developing virulent Hessian fly larvae. In addition, on susceptible wheat, larvae trigger a significant increase in levels of amino acids …

Getting The Message: The Adaptive Potential Of Interpersonal Judgments, John D. Mayer, Kimberly G. Phillips, Amy Barry Jan 2015

Getting The Message: The Adaptive Potential Of Interpersonal Judgments, John D. Mayer, Kimberly G. Phillips, Amy Barry

Psychology

According to the Social Message Model, interpersonal judgments are transactions in which judges convey important social messages to the individuals they evaluate (the targets); targets can then respond to the judgments in more or less adaptive ways. We argue that judges’ opinions emerge from their current concerns, be it to promote their own well-being, or to foster group cohesion. Targets of judgments can best interpret the meaning of a judgment they receive by understanding the judge’s concerns, competence of the judge, and other qualities of the transaction. We suggest that judges and targets who are better able to reason about …

Manager Perspectives On Communication And Public Engagement In Ecological Restoration Project Success, Caroline Gottschalk Druschke, Kristen C. Hychka Jan 2015

Manager Perspectives On Communication And Public Engagement In Ecological Restoration Project Success, Caroline Gottschalk Druschke, Kristen C. Hychka

New Hampshire EPSCoR

We look to a particular social-ecological system, the restoration community in Rhode Island, USA and the rivers, wetlands, marshes, and estuaries they work to protect, to draw connections between communication, community involvement, and ecological restoration project success. Offering real-world examples drawn from interviews with 27 local, state, federal, and nonprofit restoration managers, we synthesize the mechanisms that managers found effective to argue that the communication employed by resource managers in each phase of the restoration process, in prioritization, implementation, and monitoring, and for garnering broad-based support, shapes the quality of public engagement in natural resources management, which, in turn, can …

Effects Of Proline And Glycine On The Cnidocyte Discharge Of Hydra Magnipapillata, Janine R. Appleton Jan 2015

Effects Of Proline And Glycine On The Cnidocyte Discharge Of Hydra Magnipapillata, Janine R. Appleton

Honors Theses and Capstones

The sense of taste enables animals to utilize environmental cues to detect favorable foods. Through specialized sensory receptors, Cnidarians employ stinging cells called cnidocytes to perform a variety of activities such as locomotion, capturing prey, inducing of feeding responses, and defense. Their discharge is highly regulated by mechanical and chemical signals that are mediated by a complex system including the opsin and taste pathways. Taste 1 Receptors (T1R) have previously been isolated in vertebrates but only until recently, have been noted in invertebrates. Receptors specific to L- amino acids corresponding to the taste sensation of umami, were studied to determine …

Social Support Networks Among Children With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Laura Hapke Jan 2015

Social Support Networks Among Children With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Laura Hapke

Honors Theses and Capstones

Previous research using predominantly adult populations has found that social support is positively correlated with an individual’s quality of overall health and wellbeing. Given the limited research investigating social support among children, especially children with special needs, the present study explored the social support networks of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Nine children enrolled in an after-school program were observed interacting with others and were interviewed in group discussions about the sources of support they tend to rely on in their daily activities. Preliminary findings suggest that children relied on each other’s for help during the regular after-school …

Regulation Of The Surfactant Serrawettin W2 In Serratia Sp. Strain Scbi, Rebecca E. Audette Jan 2015

Regulation Of The Surfactant Serrawettin W2 In Serratia Sp. Strain Scbi, Rebecca E. Audette

Honors Theses and Capstones

A novel Serratia sp (termed SCBI) forms an association with nematodes (South African Caenorhabditis briggsae) that were isolated by bait trapping in the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella. This association represents a new microbe-nematode relationship and potentially a nascent entomopathogenic lifestyle. Inactivation of the hemolysin in Serratia sp. SCBI resulted in loss of hemolysis, but did not attenuate insecticidal activity. Unexpectedly, inactivation of the hemolysin gene in Serratia sp. SCBI resulted in significantly increased motility and a dramatic increase in mRNA levels of a nonribosomal peptide synthetase gene, swrA, which produces the surfactant serrawettin W2. A series of mutations in …

Mechanisms Of Satiation In The Nudibranch Melibe Leonina, Colin Lee Jan 2015

Mechanisms Of Satiation In The Nudibranch Melibe Leonina, Colin Lee

Master's Theses and Capstones

In recent years, scientists have begun to study satiation as a means of understanding changes in motivational state. Satiated animals not only show a reduction in feeding behaviors, but also in locomotion, and even show changes in their responses to various stimuli. Therefore, satiation is a qualitative change in the behavioral state of an animal. Although the behavioral characteristics of satiation are well understood, as are the changes in hormone release following a meal, the neural correlates of satiation are less understood. In particular, few studies have attempted to determine how satiating signals reconfigure feeding neural networks. To begin to …

Investigation Of Resin Regeneration In The Suspended Ion Exchange (Six®) System, Jihyon Im Jan 2015

Investigation Of Resin Regeneration In The Suspended Ion Exchange (Six®) System, Jihyon Im

Master's Theses and Capstones

This research investigated 1) evaluation and optimization of the SIX® anion exchange regeneration efficiency and 2) compatibility of cation exchange for hardness removal and shared-regeneration with the current anion exchange regenerant. The first objective was addressed by comparing the effects of three variables on desorption efficiencies: regenerant volume, salt concentration, and contact time. Sorption studies were performed to quantify resin blinding, and removal kinetics were established and compared. The second part of this research tested a strong acid cation resin for softening performance and regenerability with sodium chloride regenerant.

Inefficient DOC and nitrate desorption were observed as larger regenerant volume …

Fine-Scale Plant Species Identification In A Poor Fen And Integration Of Techniques And Instrumentation In A Classroom Setting, Dylan Schiff Jan 2015

Fine-Scale Plant Species Identification In A Poor Fen And Integration Of Techniques And Instrumentation In A Classroom Setting, Dylan Schiff

Honors Theses and Capstones

Refining carbon flux measurements in the carbon cycle is an ongoing challenge. This study attempted to identify plant species in Sallie’s Fen, a nutrient-poor fen in Barrington, New Hampshire, at a fine scale in order to better model and understand carbon exchange between plants and the atmosphere in this type of ecosystem. A protocol for estimating percent cover of species in plots via ground measurements was developed. The next stage of this project was to compare these measurements with measurements derived from spectral images using ImageJ computer software. Statistical tests of the ground measurement data revealed that patterns of seasonal …

Enduring Impact Of Childhood Stressors On Adult Health: Testing Psychological And Behavioral Pathways, Tracy Keirns Jan 2015

Enduring Impact Of Childhood Stressors On Adult Health: Testing Psychological And Behavioral Pathways, Tracy Keirns

Doctoral Dissertations

Stress and health has been a topic of interest among researchers in a variety of fields such as medical sociology, psychology, public health, child abuse, and epidemiology. For decades this research had largely been conducted in silos within each of the respective fields. In recent years, these silos have started to diminish. Sociologists have begun to consider the accumulation of stressors over the life course, including how serious childhood stressors (such as child abuse) impact morbidity and mortality later in life. Using Wave I, Wave III and Wave IV data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health …

A Physiocratic Systems Framework For Open Source Agricultural Research And Development, Dorn Cox Jan 2015

A Physiocratic Systems Framework For Open Source Agricultural Research And Development, Dorn Cox

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents a new participatory approach to agricultural research and development. It surveys the biological, sociological, economic, and technical landscape and proposes a framework for adaptive management based on the 18th century Physiocratic school of land-based economics. Industrial specialization and heavy emphasis on deductive approaches to science have contributed to the disconnection of large portions of the population from natural systems. Conventional agriculture and agricultural research methods following this pattern have created expensive social, environmental, and economic external costs, while adaptive management and resilient agricultural systems have been hindered by the cost and complexity of quantifying environmental services. However, …

Survey Of The Charge Properties Of Phospholipids Using Nanodiscs And Membrane-Confined Electrophoresis, Cheng Her Jan 2015

Survey Of The Charge Properties Of Phospholipids Using Nanodiscs And Membrane-Confined Electrophoresis, Cheng Her

Doctoral Dissertations

Phospholipids (PL) are a major, diverse constituent of cell membranes. PL diversity arises from the nature of the fatty acid chains, as well as the head group structure. The head group charge is thought to contribute to both the strength, and specificity of protein-membrane interactions. Furthermore, the divalent cations Ca2+ and Mg2+, have been shown to be essential for optimal binding for some of these interactions. Because it has been difficult to measure membrane charge, it has been impossible to quantitate the role charge plays in these interactions. However, Nanodiscs provide a stable, planar membrane bilayer suitable for biophysical studies. …

Genetic And Evolutionary Analysis Of Plant Replication Protein A 1 (Rpa1), Behailu Birhanu Aklilu Jan 2015

Genetic And Evolutionary Analysis Of Plant Replication Protein A 1 (Rpa1), Behailu Birhanu Aklilu

Doctoral Dissertations

Challenging human health issues include treatments for genetic diseases and providing improved agricultural crop output to feed the growing world population. The project described here, which focuses on how cells respond to chromosomal (genomic) damage, has significant implications in each example. In humans, accumulation of DNA damage induced mutations can result in genetic diseases such as cancer, and in plants can similarly result in genome instability, reducing productivity. Organisms from human to plants have conserved mechanisms to counteract DNA damage. However, detailed genetic and biochemical information on plant DNA repair systems is still limited. The goal of this dissertation was …
