Pan‐Arctic riverine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fluxes represent a major transfer of carbon from land‐to‐ocean, and past scaling estimates have been predominantly derived from the six major Arctic rivers. However, smaller watersheds are constrained to northern high‐latitude regions and, particularly with respect to the Eurasian Arctic, have received little attention. In this study, we evaluated the concentration of DOC and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) via optical parameters, biomarkers (lignin phenols), and ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry in the Northern Dvina River (a midsized high‐latitude constrained river). Elevated DOC, lignin concentrations, and aromatic DOM indicators were observed throughout the year …

Resistance And Resilience Of Social–Ecological Systems To Recurrent Typhoon Disturbance On A Subtropical Island: Taiwan, Chung-Te Chang, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur, Teng-Chiu Lin Jan 2018

Resistance And Resilience Of Social–Ecological Systems To Recurrent Typhoon Disturbance On A Subtropical Island: Taiwan, Chung-Te Chang, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur, Teng-Chiu Lin

Faculty Publications

Tropical cyclones (TCs) have major effects on ecological and social systems. However, studies integrating the effects of TCs on both social and ecological systems are rare, especially in the northwest Pacific, where the frequency of TCs (locally named typhoons) is the highest in the world. We synthesized studies of effects of recurrent typhoons on social and ecological systems in Taiwan over the last several decades. Many responses to TCs are comparable between social and ecological systems. High forest ecosystem resistance, evident from tree mortality below 2% even following multiple strong typhoons, is comparable with resistance of social systems, including the …

Putting Rooted Networks Into Practice, Alida Cantor, Elisabeth Stoddard, Dianne Rocheleau, Jennifer F. Brewer, Robin Roth, Trevor Birkenholtz, Katherine Foo, Padini Nirmal

Geography

Rooted networks provide a conceptual framework that embeds network thinking in nature-society geography in order to investigate socio-ecological relations, while emphasizing the place-specific materiality of these relations. This progress report examines how geographers have put the framework into scholarly practice. The conceptual approach has enabled researchers to: 1) articulate the territoriality and materiality of networks as assemblages, which may be simultaneously rooted and mobile; 2) discern diverse types of power that flow through network connections; and 3) conduct analyses that unearth multiply-situated knowledges within networks. Challenges emerge as we seek to integrate the approach more fully with disciplinary traditions, including …

The Final Campaign Against Boris Pilnyak: The Controversy Over Meat: A Novel (1936), Ronald D. Leblanc Jan 2018

The Final Campaign Against Boris Pilnyak: The Controversy Over Meat: A Novel (1936), Ronald D. Leblanc

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

This paper examines how the modernist Soviet writer, Boris Pilnyak (1894-1938), became the target of a renewed campaign of vilification in 1936-1937 that led to his subsequent arrest, interrogation, conviction (on trumped up charges of espionage and terrorism), and execution in 1938. The accusation of having produced slanderous, if not treasonous, literary works that were “counter-revolutionary” and “anti-Soviet” in nature that had been leveled against Pilnyak in the late 1920s as a result of the publication of two controversial works of fiction, “Tale of the Unextinguished Moon” (1926) and Mahogany (1929), was renewed in 1936-1937 as part of an anti-formalism …

Integrated Analysis Of The Value Of Wetland Services In Coastal Adaptation; Methodology And Case Study Of Hampton-Seabrook Estuary, New Hampshire, Paul Kirshen, Semra Aytur, David M. Burdick, Diane Foster, Tom Lippmann, Ellen Douglas, Sydney Nick, Chris Watson

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

The present impacts from coastal storms and high tides grow significantly over time due to SLR even over the relatively short period to 2060. Hydrodynamic model simulations of storm surge with and without sea level rise scenarios show that although flooding and inundation increases with increasing subtidal forcing and higher sea level, dissipation of the tide and storm surge in the estuary channel somewhat limits the maximum inundation that might otherwise be expected in the back marsh areas. The estuary is dominated by high marsh, which lies high in the intertidal zone and by 2060 it will convert to mostly …
