A Developmental Study Of Apoptotic Markers And Histamine In Cephalopod Statocysts, Samantha Nicole Leef
A Developmental Study Of Apoptotic Markers And Histamine In Cephalopod Statocysts, Samantha Nicole Leef
Honors Theses and Capstones
Cephalopods can participate in complex navigation using landmarks that show context due to their statocysts. Statocysts are analogous to the vertebrate vestibular and auditory system encased in cartilage rather than bone making them more easily accessible. Age and anatomical dysfunctions are the reasons for many human vestibular malfunctions. Two of these sources are endolymph hydrops and aging. In the past, endolymph pressure changes were attributed to the ineffectual ion transport. Recent studies have illuminated the possibility of histamine receptors in the semicircular canal could be responsible for patients’ endolymph pressure changes rather than the previous belief that the pressure changes …

Market-Base Solutions To Manage The Guarani Aquifer: Pigouvian Fee And Cap-And-Trade, Julia Hayes Vieira
Market-Base Solutions To Manage The Guarani Aquifer: Pigouvian Fee And Cap-And-Trade, Julia Hayes Vieira
Master's Theses and Capstones
The objective of this case-study is to analyze the effects and the perception of different groups in possibly implementing market-based approaches of Pigouvian tax and Cap-and-Trade to manage the Guarani Aquifer, Brazil. The Pigouvian Tax is a corrective taxation that assigns a price for the negative impacts water consumption creates to aquifers, as a way to influence a more sustainable level of water consumption. Cap-and-Trade sets a maximum quantity of water allowed to be used from aquifers, and allow economic agents to trade quantities of water they have the right to use, as a way to adapt to the cap. …
Protection Through Participation: Crowdsourced Tap Water Quality Monitoring For Enhanced Public Health, Sarah A. Jakositz
Protection Through Participation: Crowdsourced Tap Water Quality Monitoring For Enhanced Public Health, Sarah A. Jakositz
Master's Theses and Capstones
Lead contamination in municipal drinking water is a national public health issue and is generally the result of water contact with leaded distribution piping and on-premise plumbing. As a result, the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule requires point of use sampling methods at a small fraction of consumer taps on the public water distribution system. While this approach is practical, it leaves large gaps of consumers without direct monitoring and protection. In response, a novel contest-based crowdsourcing study was conducted to engage the public in monitoring their own water quality at their home taps and study factors …

A Review Of Equine Laminitis: Risk Factors And Predispositions, Molly C. Henion
A Review Of Equine Laminitis: Risk Factors And Predispositions, Molly C. Henion
Honors Theses and Capstones
Equine laminitis is a disease of the hoof characterized by inflammation or disruption of the sensitive and insensitive laminae located within the hoof. These structures are responsible for maintaining a secure connection between the third phalanx (P3) and the hoof wall. Damage to these laminae can weaken the attachment between the hoof wall and P3, causing separation and eventual rotation of P3. Equine laminitis can result from multiple triggers, but the most commonly seen cases of the disease are those which are related to endocrinopathy and metabolic related issues. This review will focus on determining the metabolic risk factors associated …

ABSTRACT
NO LACK OF BEDS:
SANITATIONISM, GENDER, AND HOSPITAL SPACES IN THE VICTORIAN NOVEL
by Elizabeth Sheckler
University of New Hampshire
May 2019
The Victorians wrote extensively about the changes in medical practice between 1800
and 1910, both in public discourse and through their fiction. As a result, Victorian scholarship
often includes medicine. While approaches are varied, they are typically either concerned with
diseases, character models (like doctors), or medical interventions alongside other public
institutions (public health).
Scholars in interdisciplinary fields as well as in Victorian literature have written on medicine in the nineteenth century, including both historiographies on topics …
I. The Binding Of Cu(Ii) And Zn(Ii) To Poly-N-Isopropylacrylamide And Its Effects On The Phase Transition And Ii. The Synthesis And Characterization Of Nickelalactones Chelated By P-N-P Pincer Ligands, Luke Aaron Fulton
Doctoral Dissertations
The responsive material poly-N-isopropylacrylamide phase-transitions from hydrophilic to hydrophobic conformations above 32 °C in aqueous media. Researchers have successfully tied that responsive behavior to other dissolved species such as pH, metal concentrations, and even glucose concentration. From our interests in developing sensor technologies we ascertained that direct interactions between metal ion and polymer had received little to no attention. Our investigations into this literature gap discovered that dissolved metal ion only slightly shifts the lower critical solution temperature. However, metal ion greatly increases the size of polymer aggregates, and is found to bind directly to the polymer. We present a …
Evaluation Of New England Salt Marsh Support Of The American Eel, Anguilla Rostrata, And The Impacts Of Hydrologic Restriction, Alyson L. Eberhardt
Evaluation Of New England Salt Marsh Support Of The American Eel, Anguilla Rostrata, And The Impacts Of Hydrologic Restriction, Alyson L. Eberhardt
Doctoral Dissertations
American eels are frequently captured in saltmarsh habitats yet little is known about eel use of these systems. Coastal systems such as salt marshes are vulnerable to habitat impacts due to high rates of coastal development, including impacts from undersized culverts that result in tidally restricted systems upstream. Given the decline in the American eel population, a need exists for a clearer understanding of the functional difference of hydrologically restricted and unrestricted salt marshes in the support of eels. To address data gaps and inform saltmarsh management to support eels, laboratory and field experiments were employed that assessed the value …
Coastal Conflicts And Cross-Sectoral Engagement: Learning From Disputes Over Science In Coastal And Ocean Systems, Lindsey C. Williams
Coastal Conflicts And Cross-Sectoral Engagement: Learning From Disputes Over Science In Coastal And Ocean Systems, Lindsey C. Williams
Doctoral Dissertations
It is widely accepted that public policy decisions that account for scientific and technical advice are likely to improve outcomes for all. With more data and information available though, it is becoming increasingly difficult to even agree on the baseline facts. This research explores the question: How do cross-sectoral engagement opportunities influence science intensive disputes over the management of coastal and ocean resources? To address this question, I studied two cases in New England: 1) marine fisheries management (Northeast Multispecies Complex aka groundfish) and 2) estuarine water quality management (Great Bay, New Hampshire). Informed by participant observation and semi-structured interviews …
Estimation Of Measurement Uncertainty Of Seafloor Acoustic Backscatter, Mashkoor Malik
Estimation Of Measurement Uncertainty Of Seafloor Acoustic Backscatter, Mashkoor Malik
Doctoral Dissertations
In the last three decades, Multibeam echo sounders (MBES) have become the tool of choice to study the seafloor. MBES collects two distinct types of data: bathymetry that provides topographic details of the seafloor and backscatter that has the potential to characterize the seafloor. While the uncertainty associated with MBE bathymetry has been well studied, the uncertainty in MBES backscatter measurement has received relatively little attention, hindering the improvements in quantitative analysis of backscatter data. Both acquisition and processing stages can introduce uncertainty in the final seafloor backscatter products. Application of well-established uncertainty quantification principles to seafloor backscatter data is …
The Purpose And Value Of Agricultural Experiment Stations Today: A Perception Study Of The Directors Of State Agricultural Experiment Stations, Lori Wright
Doctoral Dissertations
This study investigates the dynamic relationship of the purpose and value of state agricultural experiment stations today as perceived by a sample of the directors of state agricultural experiment station in the United States funded by the Hatch Act of 1887. State agricultural experiment stations are a fundamental component of the land-grant university system; they are the original model and the first centers for applied research at most flagship state land-grant research universities in the United States (Kerr, 1987; Knoblauch, 1962). The purpose of state agricultural experiment stations has evolved since their inception as new agricultural issues have arisen, new …
Forecasting Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In A Changing Climate, Meghan Ann Hartwick
Forecasting Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In A Changing Climate, Meghan Ann Hartwick
Doctoral Dissertations
The distribution, transmission and adaptation patterns of infectious diseases are changing worldwide. Though there are many potential mechanisms that can transmit infectious agents to new areas, the ability of pathogens to persist in new locations can be largely attributed to changing climate conditions, especially in temperate regions. Vibrio parahaemolyticus, a naturally occurring bacteria in most marine and estuarine systems, provides a model example of these globally observed climate-related changes to disease dynamics that are occurring locally in the Northeast, US. Like many Vibrio species, pathogenicity in human hosts is believed to be limited to a subset of strains, whereas the …
The Role Of Replication Protein A Large Subunit Family In Pathogen-Induced Dna Damage In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Nancy Lynn Fernandes
The Role Of Replication Protein A Large Subunit Family In Pathogen-Induced Dna Damage In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Nancy Lynn Fernandes
Doctoral Dissertations
The DNA of every organism is under continuous attack from both environmental agents, errors in DNA replication, and reactive oxygen species produced from cellular metabolism. The preservation of genome stability and integrity is essential to counteract threats to genome integrity. Eukaryotic organisms have evolved a complex set of mechanisms to sense DNA damage and initiate repair of the damage or death of the cell, collectively called the DNA damage response (DDR).
One of the main causes of detrimental DNA damage is due to microbial pathogens, both in mammals and in plants. In humans Escherichia coli, Helicobacter pylori and Pseudomonas aeruginosa …
Assessing Potential Impacts Of Climate Change On American Lobsters (Homarus Americanus) With Novel Tools And Techniques, Benjamin C. Gutzler
Assessing Potential Impacts Of Climate Change On American Lobsters (Homarus Americanus) With Novel Tools And Techniques, Benjamin C. Gutzler
Doctoral Dissertations
The Gulf of Maine is currently experiencing rapid environmental changes, in the form of warming temperatures, increasing acidity, and a benthic ecosystem that is dominated by the American lobster (Homarus americanus) as the sole major predator and most significant fishery. The overall goal of my dissertation research was to investigate how the increased stress from warmer, more acidic, waters might impact individual lobsters, and thus lobster populations. To address this overall objective it was necessary to develop novel methods for investigating lobster behavior and reproduction, a theme that will run throughout this dissertation. In Chapter Two, I developed a new …
Acoustic Methods For Mapping And Characterizing Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Using A Multibeam Echosounder, Ashley Rose Norton
Acoustic Methods For Mapping And Characterizing Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Using A Multibeam Echosounder, Ashley Rose Norton
Doctoral Dissertations
Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) is an important component of many temperate global coastal ecosystems. SAV monitoring programs using optical remote sensing are limited by water clarity and attenuation with depth. Here underwater acoustics is used to analyze the water volume above the bottom to detect, map and characterize SAV. In particular, this dissertation developed and applied new methods for analyzing the full time series of acoustic intensity data (e.g., water column data) collected by a multibeam echosounder. This dissertation is composed of three separate but related studies. In the first study, novel methods for detecting and measuring the canopy height …
Seasonal Methane And Carbon Dioxide Emissions Along A Temperate Fluvial Wetland Dominated River Continuum, Paige Elizabeth Clarizia
Seasonal Methane And Carbon Dioxide Emissions Along A Temperate Fluvial Wetland Dominated River Continuum, Paige Elizabeth Clarizia
Master's Theses and Capstones
Freshwater ecosystems, such as streams and fluvial wetlands, are a subset of global aquatic ecosystems and produce and emit significant amounts of the greenhouse gases (GHG) methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. In temperate regions, freshwater ecosystems often contain fluvial wetlands, which form the boundary between stream and wetland ecosystems. In fluvial wetlands, oxygen- and nutrient- poor soils are continuously fed by upstream river networks, which have the potential to create ecosystems with enhanced GHG production and emissions. The magnitude and seasonal variability of natural GHG emissions from freshwater fluvial wetlands, though highly understudied, have been suggested …
Agrobiodiversity For Pest Management: An Integrated Bioeconomic Simulation And Machine Learning Approach, Talha Siddique
Agrobiodiversity For Pest Management: An Integrated Bioeconomic Simulation And Machine Learning Approach, Talha Siddique
Master's Theses and Capstones
A pressing challenge of modern agriculture is to develop means of decreasing the negative impacts of pesticides while maintaining low pest pressure and high crop yield. Certain crop varieties, especially wild relatives of domesticated crops, provide pest regulation ecosystem services through chemical defense mechanisms. Benefits from these ecosystem service can be realized by intercropping cash crops with repellent wild varieties to reduce pest pressure. An opportunity cost exists, however, which consists of lower yield and market value. Such is the case of heirloom apple varieties that are more resistant to the codling moth but have a lower market value compared …
Evaluating The Role Of A Cav2.2 Splice Variant In Behavioral Responses To Stress, Novelty, And Other Monoamine-Linked Functions, Ashton Brennecke
Evaluating The Role Of A Cav2.2 Splice Variant In Behavioral Responses To Stress, Novelty, And Other Monoamine-Linked Functions, Ashton Brennecke
Master's Theses and Capstones
CaV2.2 (N-type) channel is a presynaptic channel that enables calcium influx into axon terminals, thereby playing a vital role in coupling action potentials to neurotransmitter release in the central and peripheral nervous systems. In vitro studies of CaV2.2 show that the channel directly modulates levels of the monoamines including dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. Further, CaV2.2-null mice exhibit heightened aggression and hyperlocomotion linked to aberrant dopamine and serotonin function. All these studies suggest that CaV2.2 plays a pivotal role in monoaminergic function. CaV2.2 contains an alternatively spliced exon, e18a, which is either included (+18a-CaV2.2) or removed (Δ18a-Ca¬V2.2) from the channel and …

The Effect Of Meloxicam On The Ability Of Neonatal Dairy Calves To Absorb Igg Provided By Colostrum Replacer, Meaghan O.C. Clark
Master's Theses and Capstones
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of meloxicam, administered either in pill form immediately prior to colostrum replacer (CR), or powder form, mixed in solution with CR, on the immunoglobulin G (IgG) uptake, growth, and health of pre-weaned calves. A pilot study considering the potential benefits of meloxicam in pre-weaned heifers indicated administration of the drug following difficult parturition improved body weight (BW) and overall health, but was not associated with passive transfer of immunity (Murray et al., 2015). However, calves from this study were sampled from 10 commercial farms, and therefore, treatment administration was inconsistent, …
Filamentous Bacteriophage Associated With Shaping Community Structure And Fitness Of Invasive Vibrio Parahaemolyticus St36, Jillian Means
Filamentous Bacteriophage Associated With Shaping Community Structure And Fitness Of Invasive Vibrio Parahaemolyticus St36, Jillian Means
Master's Theses and Capstones
Vibrio parahaemolyticus a ubiquitous coastal inhabitant, is the leading cause of bacterial seafood-borne illnesses in the United States. An increasing number of reported cases and rapid expansion into new areas has led to the classification of V. parahaemolyticus as an emergent pathogen. Most strains of V. parahaemolyticus are not virulent; however, the spread of virulent lineages from their native ranges to new locations has contributed drastically to the increase in vibriosis attributed to V. parahaemolyticus in recent years. In the United States (US), sequence type (ST) 36, a virulent strain endemic to the Pacific Northwest (PNW), spread from its native …
Potential Role Of Marine Snow In The Fate Of Spilled Oil In Cook Inlet, Alaska, Jesse Ross
Potential Role Of Marine Snow In The Fate Of Spilled Oil In Cook Inlet, Alaska, Jesse Ross
Master's Theses and Capstones
While extensive research has been conducted on minerals aggregating with spilled oil, surface-forming organic aggregates, called marine snow, have only recently been studied as a transport mechanism. This knowledge gap in understanding the fate of oil was highlighted following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DWH) blowout in the Gulf of Mexico when a significant percentage of the spilled oil reached the seafloor as a result of association with marine snow. Research following the DWH blowout suggests both marine snow and mineral aggregates are significant oil exposure pathways that must be considered during an oil spill response. The U.S. Geological Survey and …

Master's Theses and Capstones
ASSESSING ABUNDANCE AND QUESTING BEHAVIOR OF WINTER TICKS (DERMENCENTOR ALBIPICTUS) IN NORTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE.
Brent Illig Powers
University of New Hampshire
Recent decline in New Hampshire’s moose (Alces alces) population is attributed to parasitism by winter ticks (Dermacentor albipictus) associated with high calf mortality and reduced adult cow productivity. Research has focused mainly on moose (host) population dynamics with minimal study of abundance and distribution of winter ticks (parasite) on the landscape. Importantly, tick location is dictated by where ticks drop from moose in April, when they principally forage in regenerating forest. This research was designed with 4 primary objectives: …

“TAKEN TO VT. STATE HOSPITAL”:
LOCALIZING THE HISTORY OF MENTAL HEALTH INSTITUTIONS,
A STUDY OF THE VERMONT STATE ASYLUM FOR THE INSANE, 1891-1912
By
Alecia Bassett
University of New Hampshire, December 2019
Often, the term “insane asylum,” invokes a macabre image of a crowded, outdated institution that does not so much care for its patients as secludes them from society. This popularized notion about care for the mentally ill in the many decades before contemporary medicine, is, as often times is the case, based in both fact and fiction. Institutional demands, such as overcrowding, forced many asylum administrators to …
