Environmental, Human Health, And Economic Implications Of Landfill Leachate Treatment For Pfas Removal, Danyi Feng
Environmental, Human Health, And Economic Implications Of Landfill Leachate Treatment For Pfas Removal, Danyi Feng
Master's Theses and Capstones
Landfill leachate is commonly treated offsite with municipal wastewater. This offsite leachate treatment may be limited or no longer applicable due to the increasingly stringent regulations and concerns related to PFAS discharge into the environment, resulting in development of full-scale, onsite leachate treatment facilities. To help landfills prepare for the potential shift from offsite to onsite leachate treatment for PFAS compliance, this study analyzed and compared the environmental, human health, and economic performances of a typical onsite and a typical offsite leachate treatment alternative using life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost assessment (LCCA). Two distinct functional units were …
Determining The Factors That Drive Understory Plant Species Distribution In The White Mountains Of New Hampshire, Nathan Roe
Master's Theses and Capstones
Species niche is a fundamental concept in ecology, but quantitative descriptions of nicheare lacking for most species. We used new statistical techniques from species distribution modeling (SDM) literature to create estimates of niche for 41 understory species in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Niche estimates allow for improved understanding of the environmental gradients determining the spatial patterns of species. We found that elevation and soil fertility were the dominant gradients influencing the distribution of our study species. The use of remotely sensed variables alone were capable of producing useful SDMs but were improved by the addition of soil variables. …
Spatial And Temporal Occurrence Of Preformed Nitrate Anomalies In The Subtropical Ocean, Adam Joseph Smyth
Spatial And Temporal Occurrence Of Preformed Nitrate Anomalies In The Subtropical Ocean, Adam Joseph Smyth
Master's Theses and Capstones
Preformed nitrate (PreNO3) was formulated to act as a conservative tracer of oceancirculation after accounting for the stoichiometry of marine biochemical reactions involving oxygen and nitrate. However, PreNO3 anomalies have been identified within the shallow subtropical ocean, that describe the biological consumption or production of oxygen without assumed stoichiometric changes in nitrate, which still have yet to be fully explained. The mechanisms proposed to drive the formation of PreNO3 anomalies are: vertically migrating phytoplankton (VMP), the export and subsequent remineralization of N-deficient transparent exopolymer particles (TEP, e.g. marine gels), and the remineralization of N-poor dissolved organic matter (DOM). Observations from …
Investigation Of Stormwater Bmp Water Quality Performance Characteristics With Respect To Storm Event Variables And Influent Event Mean Concentrations, Samuel James Lanternier
Investigation Of Stormwater Bmp Water Quality Performance Characteristics With Respect To Storm Event Variables And Influent Event Mean Concentrations, Samuel James Lanternier
Master's Theses and Capstones
Stormwater is known to be a major source of water pollution. In addition to increased flows resulting from increased impervious area in watersheds, stormwater is known to carry pollutants such a suspended solids, hydrocarbons, and nutrients into receiving water bodies. Because of this, stormwater treatment systems, referred to as ‘best management practices’ (BMPs), are utilized to dampen peak flows, reduce total runoff volume, and remove pollutants. While many studies have investigated the effectiveness of various BMPs in the removal of pollutants, fewer studies have investigated the effects of numerous storm variables on the effectiveness of treatment systems. This thesis investigates …
Nutrient Solution Effects On Plant Health And Microbial Community Composition In Soilless Strawberry Culture, William Miller Hardesty-Dyck
Nutrient Solution Effects On Plant Health And Microbial Community Composition In Soilless Strawberry Culture, William Miller Hardesty-Dyck
Master's Theses and Capstones
Holding advantages in efficiency and geographical flexibility, soilless Controlled Environmental Agriculture (CEA) systems have emerged as economically viable and ecologically sound alternatives to field agriculture, especially in high-value fruit and vegetable production. While commercial soilless operations typically use synthetic, mineral-based nutrient solutions for plant nutrition, there is interest in incorporating more ecologically sustainable naturally derived sources. Aquaponics - the linkage of aquaculture with soilless crop production - represents one such alternative. Aquacultural effluents can provide partial to complete plant nutrition following solids removal and nitrifying biofiltration, while the incorporation of solutes into crop biomass reduces the need to discharge culture …

Pervasive Infancy: Reassessing The Contract Capacity Of Adults In Modern America, Michael S. Lewis
Pervasive Infancy: Reassessing The Contract Capacity Of Adults In Modern America, Michael S. Lewis
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
This article argues that the law of consumer contracts should permit adults to access the same protections available to children where data about adult performance indicates that the two categories of people are similarly situated within the domain of consumer contracts. In making this claim, this article relies upon a description of capacity articulated by Professor Martha Nussbaum in her important work on the subject. Professor Nussbaum explains that capacity is a function, not only of a person’s innate capabilities, but of a person’s opportunity or ability to deploy those capabilities within environmental limitations. Capacity to contract in a free …

The Northern high latitudes are warming twice as fast as the global average, and permafrost has become vulnerable to thaw. Changes to the environment during thaw leads to shifts in microbial communities and their associated functions, such as greenhouse gas emissions. Understanding the ecological processes that structure the identity and abundance (i.e., assembly) of pre- and post-thaw communities may improve predictions of the functional outcomes of permafrost thaw. We characterized microbial community assembly during permafrost thaw using in situ observations and a laboratory incubation of soils from the Storflaket Mire in Abisko, Sweden, where permafrost thaw has occurred over the …

Fungal decomposition of soil organic matter depends on soil nitrogen (N) availability. This ecosystem process is being jeopardized by changes in N inputs that have resulted from a tripling of atmospheric N deposition in the last century. Soil fungi are impacted by atmospheric N deposition due to higher N availability, as soils are acidified, or as micronutrients become increasingly limiting. Fungal communities that persist with chronic N deposition may be enriched with traits that enable them to tolerate environmental stress, which may trade-off with traits enabling organic matter decomposition. We hypothesized that fungal communities would respond to N deposition by …

International efforts to restore degraded ecosystems will continue to expand over the coming decades, yet the factors contributing to the effectiveness of long-term restoration across large areas remain largely unexplored. At large scales, outcomes are more complex and synergistic than the additive impacts of individual restoration projects. Here, we propose a cumulative-effects conceptual framework to inform restoration design and implementation and to comprehensively measure ecological outcomes. To evaluate and illustrate this approach, we reviewed long-term restoration in several large coastal and riverine areas across the US: the greater Florida Everglades; Gulf of Mexico coast; lower Columbia River and estuary; Puget …

Coordinated River Infrastructure Decisions Improve Net Social-Ecological Benefits, Samuel G. Roy, Adam Daigneault, Joseph Zydlewski, Allison Truhlar, Sean Smith, Shaleen Jain, David Hart
New Hampshire EPSCoR
We explore the social, ecological, economic, and technical dimensions of sustainable river infrastructure development and the potential benefits of coordinating decisions such as dam removal and stream crossing improvement. Dam removal is common practice for restoring river habitat connectivity and ecosystem health. However, stream crossings such as culverts are often 15 times more abundant than dams and may pose similar ecological impacts. Using multi-objective optimization for a model system of 6100 dams and culverts in Maine, USA, we demonstrate substantial benefit-cost improvements provided by coordinating habitat connectivity decisions. Benefit-cost efficiency improves by two orders of magnitude when coordinating more decisions …
