Recent Advances In Non-Enzymatic Electrochemical Detection Of Hydrophobic Metabolites In Biofluids, Zahra Panahi, Luciana Custer, Jeffrey M. Halpern
New Hampshire EPSCoR
This review focuses on recent advances in non-enzymatic electrochemical biosensors for detection of hydrophobic metabolites. Electrochemical approaches have been widely applied in many established and emerging technologies and a large range of electrochemical biosensors have been used for detection of various hydrophobic metabolites. Despite the progress made in this field, some problems still exist, specifically, electrochemical detection of hydrophobic biomarkers can be challenging in complex biological fluids. In this review, we have highlighted some of the most representative surface modification technologies that have been employed in electrochemical biosensors to counter the problems of poor sensitivity and selectivity towards hydrophobic metabolites. …

Water Dynamics In A Peptide-Appended Pillar[5]Arene Artificial Channel In Lipid And Biomimetic Membranes, Daniel Ryan Barden, Harish Vashisth
Water Dynamics In A Peptide-Appended Pillar[5]Arene Artificial Channel In Lipid And Biomimetic Membranes, Daniel Ryan Barden, Harish Vashisth
New Hampshire EPSCoR
Peptide-appended Pillar[5]arene (PAP) is an artificial water channel that can be incorporated into lipid and polymeric membranes to achieve high permeability and enhanced selectivity for angstrom-scale separations [Shen et al. Nat. Commun. 9:2294 (2018)]. In comparison to commonly studied rigid carbon nanotubes, PAP channels are conformationally flexible, yet these channels allow a high water permeability [Y. Liu and H. Vashisth Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 21:22711 (2019)]. Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we study water dynamics in PAP channels embedded in biological (lipid) and biomimetic (block-copolymer) membranes to probe the effect of the membrane environment on water transport characteristics of PAP …

Sustainable food systems education (SFSE) is rapidly advancing to meet the need for developing future professionals who are capable of effective decision-making regarding agriculture, food, nutrition, consumption, and waste in a complex world. Equity, particularly racial equity and its intersectional links with other inequities, should play a central role in efforts to advance SFSE given the harmful social and environmental externalities of food systems and ongoing oppression and systemic inequities such as lack of food access faced by racialized and/or marginalized populations. However, few institutional and intra-disciplinary resources exist on how to engage students in discussion about equity and related …
Classifying 3-D Models Of Coral Reefs Using Structure-From-Motion And Multi-View Semantic Segmentation, Jordan Pierce, Mark J. Butler Iv
Classifying 3-D Models Of Coral Reefs Using Structure-From-Motion And Multi-View Semantic Segmentation, Jordan Pierce, Mark J. Butler Iv
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Benthic quadrat surveys using 2-D images are one of the most common methods of quantifying the composition of coral reef communities, but they and other methods fail to assess changes in species composition as a 3-dimensional system, arguably one of the most important attributes in foundational systems. Structure-from-motion (SfM) algorithms that utilize images collected from various viewpoints to form an accurate 3-D model have become more common among ecologists in recent years. However, there exist few efficient methods that can classify portions of the 3-D model to specific ecological functional groups. This lack of granularity makes it more difficult to …
Self-Assembly Of Porous Structures From A Binary Mixture Of Lobed Patchy Particles, Sanjib Paul, Harish Vashisth
Self-Assembly Of Porous Structures From A Binary Mixture Of Lobed Patchy Particles, Sanjib Paul, Harish Vashisth
New Hampshire EPSCoR
We report simulation studies on the self-assembly of a binary mixture of snowman and dumbbell shaped lobed particles. Depending on the lobe size and temperature, different types of self-assembled structures (random aggregates, spherical aggregates, liquid droplets, amorphous wire-like structures, amorphous ring structures, crystalline structures) are observed. At lower temperatures, heterogeneous structures are formed for lobed particles of both shapes. At higher temperatures, homogeneous self-assembled structures are formed mainly by the dumbbell shaped particles, while the snowman shaped particles remain in a dissociated state. We also investigated the porosities of self-assembled structures. The pore diameters in self-assemblies increased with an increase …

Global-Local-Comparison Approach: Understanding Marine Mammal Spatial Behavior By Applying Spatial Statistics And Hypothesis Testing To Passive Acoustic Data, Hilary Kates Varghese, Kim Lowell, Jennifer L. Miksis-Olds
Global-Local-Comparison Approach: Understanding Marine Mammal Spatial Behavior By Applying Spatial Statistics And Hypothesis Testing To Passive Acoustic Data, Hilary Kates Varghese, Kim Lowell, Jennifer L. Miksis-Olds
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Technological innovation in underwater acoustics has progressed research in marine mammal behavior by providing the ability to collect data on various marine mammal biological and behavioral attributes across time and space. But with this comes the need for an approach to distill the large amounts of data collected. Though disparate general statistical and modeling approaches exist, here, a holistic quantitative approach specifically motivated by the need to analyze different aspects of marine mammal behavior within a Before-After Control-Impact framework using spatial observations is introduced: the Global-Local-Comparison (GLC) approach. This approach capitalizes on the use of data sets from large-scale, hydrophone …

Terrestrial ecosystems regulate Earth's climate through water, energy, and biogeochemical transformations. Despite a key role in regulating the Earth system, terrestrial ecology has historically been underrepresented in the Earth system models (ESMs) that are used to understand and project global environmental change. Ecology and Earth system modeling must be integrated for scientists to fully comprehend the role of ecological systems in driving and responding to global change. Ecological insights can improve ESM realism and reduce process uncertainty, while ESMs offer ecologists an opportunity to broadly test ecological theory and increase the impact of their work by scaling concepts through time …

Isolating Detrital And Diagenetic Signals In Magnetic Susceptibility Records From Methane-Bearing Marine Sediments, Joel E. Johnson, Stephen C. Phillips, William C. Clyde, Liviu Giosan, Marta E. Torres
Isolating Detrital And Diagenetic Signals In Magnetic Susceptibility Records From Methane-Bearing Marine Sediments, Joel E. Johnson, Stephen C. Phillips, William C. Clyde, Liviu Giosan, Marta E. Torres
Faculty Publications
Volume-dependent magnetic susceptibility (κ) is commonly used for paleoenvironmental reconstructions in both terrestrial and marine sedimentary environments where it reflects a mixed signal between primary deposition and secondary diagenesis. In the marine environment, κ is strongly influenced by the abundance of ferrimagnetic minerals regulated by sediment transport processes. Post-depositional alteration by H2S, however, can dissolve titanomagnetite, releasing reactive Fe that promotes pyritization and subsequently decreases κ. Here, we provide a new approach for isolating the detrital signal in κ and identifying intervals of diagenetic alteration of κ driven by organoclastic sulfate reduction (OSR) and the anaerobic oxidation of …

Altered Alpha Oscillatory Power Dynamics Underlie Difficulties With Cognitive Flexibility, Nicole Forner
Altered Alpha Oscillatory Power Dynamics Underlie Difficulties With Cognitive Flexibility, Nicole Forner
Doctoral Dissertations
Cognitive flexibility is an important mental faculty, but there are certain populations that experience reduced flexibility, which may be associated with altered neural activity. Rumination is when an individual becomes mentally stuck on a thought, and they experience difficulty shifting their attention away from the ruminative thought demonstrating reduced cognitive flexibility. In a similar manner, individuals diagnosed with substance use disorder show varying degrees of attentional bias towards drug related stimuli. The drug cues capture attention, and it is difficult for these individuals to shift attention away from thoughts related to drug cues. Both populations experience difficulty shifting attention when …
Transport, Species-Specific Resource Competition, And Shallow Water Effects In Coupled Bio-Physical Ecosystem Models For C. Polykrikoides Harmful Algal Blooms Off The Coast Of Korea, Jang-Geun Choi
Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis examines the role of transport and environmental variables in determining the occurrence or suppression of harmful algal blooms (HABs). In the first part, a simple 2-D diagnostic model is used to hindcast HABs occurring off the coast of Korea using observations of averaged environmental factors including nutrient concentration. Hindcasting results using the model show that physical transport of HABs is of the same order of importance as the environmental conditions in controlling HABs. The model reproduces the interannual variability of the observe HABs off the coast of Korea. The relative importance of the environmental factors based on limiting …
Cover Crop-Based No-Till For Small Farms: Tradeoffs Of Termination Time, Method, And Ecosystem Services, Natalie Lounsbury
Cover Crop-Based No-Till For Small Farms: Tradeoffs Of Termination Time, Method, And Ecosystem Services, Natalie Lounsbury
Doctoral Dissertations
Agriculture must adapt to and mitigate multiple environmental crises including climate change, overuse of herbicides, and soil degradation. Cover crops are a promising tool to do so because they protect soil from erosion, increase perenniality (i.e. year-round plant cover) and carbon contributions to farming systems, capture, recycle, and fix nitrogen, and suppress weeds through multiple mechanisms. Terminating high-residue cover crops to produce an in situ mulch for no-till production has added benefits of eliminating the need for tillage, protecting soil against extreme precipitation events and drought, and contributing to weed suppression. However, there are few non-chemical ways to terminate cover …
Merging Ecology And Earth System Modeling: Biotic And Abiotic Controls Drive Soil Carbon And Nitrogen Cycling In Microbial-Explicit Soil Biogeochemistry Models, Emily Kyker-Snowman
Merging Ecology And Earth System Modeling: Biotic And Abiotic Controls Drive Soil Carbon And Nitrogen Cycling In Microbial-Explicit Soil Biogeochemistry Models, Emily Kyker-Snowman
Doctoral Dissertations
Ecological processes drive terrestrial biogeochemistry, yet the incorporation of ecology into the Earth system models that we use to understand and project global change remains. My dissertation focuses on expediting the incorporation of ecology into Earth system models, first by laying out a roadmap from initial assessment of ecological insights to eventual ESM incorporation, and then by demonstrating this roadmap using the example of microbially- controlled carbon and nitrogen cycling in soil. The paradigm around SOM formation and loss has shifted in recent decades away from a focus on the chemically recalcitrant leftovers of litter decomposition and towards a paradigm …
The Dissemination And Reproduction Of Dominant Ideologies On Social Media: Reddit Through The Lens Of Color-Blind Racism And Gender-Blind Sexism, Paul Anskat
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation explores the frameworks of color-blind racism and gender-blind sexism as they are disseminated through the social media site Reddit. I analyze data in the form of posts and comments submitted to the site. Qualitative discourse analysis reveals employment of the frames of color-blindness and gender-blindness as well as narratives which function to anchor the dominant ideologies to apparent lived experiences. This dissertation offers two major contributions to the scholarship of racism and sexism. First, the findings demonstrate that ideologies of race and gender are often articulated through common narratives and intertwined rhetoric, establishing a foundation for future research …
Alkalinity And Buffering In Estuarine, Coastal And Shelf Waters, Christopher Hunt
Alkalinity And Buffering In Estuarine, Coastal And Shelf Waters, Christopher Hunt
Doctoral Dissertations
As anthropogenic climate change continues to elevate the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the Earth’s atmosphere, the absorption of a large portion of this CO2 by Earth’s oceans has resulted in a steady decrease in pH. The consequent phenomenon of ocean acidification (OA) is a result of shifts in the carbonate chemistry system of the ocean- a system which can be analytically described by several factors, including total alkalinity (TA). TA in the oceans has been measured for over a century, but analytical and operational constraints have limited these measurements in time and space. Additionally, recent work has highlighted …
