Eyes Off The Earth? Public Opinion Regarding Climate Science And Nasa, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Jessica Brunacini, Stephanie Pfirm

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Lawrence Hamilton, Jessica Brunacini, and Stephanie Pfirman report the results of two nationwide Polar, Environment, and Science surveys on climate change conducted in 2016, as well as a follow-up April 2017 Granite State Poll asking New Hampshire residents their thoughts on proposed cuts to the NASA program. Seventy-three percent of respondents in the nationwide survey said they trust science agencies such as NASA for information about climate change. The second-most-trusted source of information about climate change is family and friends. Despite political divisions, science agencies such as NASA are trusted by substantial majorities within every political …

Race, Partisan Gerrymandering And The Constitution, John M. Greabe Jun 2017

Race, Partisan Gerrymandering And The Constitution, John M. Greabe

Law Faculty Scholarship

[Excerpt] “For the most part, the Constitution speaks in generalities. The 14th Amendment, for example, instructs the states to provide all persons the "equal protection of the laws." But obviously, this cannot mean that states are always forbidden from treating a person differently than any other person. Children can, of course, be constitutionally barred from driving, notwithstanding the Equal Protection Clause. Thus, there is a need within our constitutional system to refine the Constitution's abstract provisions.”

Hegel's Revival In Analytic Philosophy, Willem A. Devries Jun 2017

Hegel's Revival In Analytic Philosophy, Willem A. Devries

Faculty Publications

Analytic philosophy is rediscovering Hegel. This essay examines a particularly strong thread of new analytic Hegelianism, sometimes called ‘Pittsburgh Hegelianism’, which began with the work of Wilfrid Sellars. In trying to bring Anglo-American philosophy from its empiricist phase into a more sophisticated, corrected Kantianism, Sellars moved in substantially Hegelian directions. Sellars’ work has been extended, and revised by his Pittsburgh colleagues John McDowell and Robert B. Brandom. The sociality and historicity of reason, the proper treatment of space and time, conceptual holism, inferentialism, the reality of conceptual structure, the structure of experience, and the nature of normativity are the central …

Child Care Expenses Push Many Families Into Poverty, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Christopher Wimer May 2017

Child Care Expenses Push Many Families Into Poverty, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Christopher Wimer

Carsey Publications

In this fact sheet, authors Marybeth Mattingly and Christopher Wimer use the Supplemental Poverty Measure to assess the extent to which child care costs are pushing families with young children into poverty or preventing them from escaping it. They focus on families with at least one child under age 6 who report any child care expenditures. They report that one third of poor families who pay for child care for their young children are pushed into poverty by their child care expenses. Families most often pushed into poverty by child care expenses include households with three or more children, those …

More Than 95 Percent Of U.S. Children Had Health Insurance In 2015, Michael J. Staley

Carsey Publications

In this brief, author Michael Staley examines rates of children’s health insurance across the United States, by region and by place type, breaking down rates by private and public coverage. He reports that over 95 percent of all U.S. children under age 18 were covered by some form of health insurance in 2015—the highest share since the American Community Survey began measuring insurance rates in 2008. Rates of coverage increased between 2014 and 2015 in all four U.S. regions, and the greatest growth occurred in the South and West. Growth in public insurance—Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program— remained …

Gains In Reducing Child Poverty, But Racial-Ethnic Disparities Persist, Jess Carson, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Andrew P. Schaefer Apr 2017

Gains In Reducing Child Poverty, But Racial-Ethnic Disparities Persist, Jess Carson, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Andrew P. Schaefer

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Jessica Carson, Marybeth Mattingly, and Andrew Schaefer use data from the American Community Survey to investigate patterns of child poverty across race-ethnicities and across regions and place types. They also explore changes in child poverty rates since 2014 and since the end of the Great Recession in 2009. The authors report that between 2014 and 2015, child poverty fell for all race-ethnicities except Asians. The largest declines in child poverty occurred among blacks and Hispanics, and the poverty gap between them and white and Asian children narrowed, although these groups’ poverty rates are far from converging. …

Moving To Diversity, Richelle L. Winkler, Kenneth M. Johnson Apr 2017

Moving To Diversity, Richelle L. Winkler, Kenneth M. Johnson

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Richelle Winkler and Kenneth Johnson, using new data and techniques, find that net migration between U.S. counties increased racial diversity in each of the last two decades. However, migration’s influence on diversity was far from uniform: it varied by race, age group, and location, sometimes starkly. Overall, net migration of the population under age 40 increased diversity, while net migration of people over age 60 diminished diversity. Blacks and Hispanics are migrating to predominantly white counties, while white young adults are moving to urban core counties with relatively high proportions of blacks and Hispanics. The movement …
