Facial Recognition And Drivers’ Licenses: Should The Dmv Share Your Photo?, Daniel Bromberg, Étienne Charbonneau, Andrew Smith

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Daniel Bromberg, Étienne Charbonneau, and Andrew Smith present the findings of a 2017 Granite State Poll asking New Hampshire residents how they feel about the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) sharing their driver’s license photos with the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). Currently 21 states, though not New Hampshire, share DMV data with the FBI in support of its effort to build a massive database of over 400 million photos to which it applies facial recognition technology. The authors report that about 70 percent of Granite Staters support the state DMV sharing photos with the FBI …

Ok, Google, Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Human Lawyering?, Amy Vorenberg, Julie A. Oseid, Melissa Love Koenig

Law Faculty Scholarship

Will Artificial Intelligence (AI) replace human lawyering? The answer is no. Despite worries that AI is getting so sophisticated that it could take over the profession, there is little cause for concern. Indeed, the surge of AI in the legal field has crystalized the real essence of effective lawyering. The lawyer’s craft goes beyond what AI can do because we listen with empathy to clients’ stories, strategize to find that story that might not be obvious, thoughtfully use our imagination and judgment to decide which story will appeal to an audience, and creatively tell those winning stories.

“My Advice…Is Get Out Of Town”: Economic Opportunities And Population Composition In Two Rural Counties, Marybeth Mattingly, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Beth Mattingly and Jess Carson explore how rural residents’ efforts to make ends meet are shaped by the economic and population characteristics of their communities. The authors use qualitative data from interviews and focus groups with low-income residents and social service providers in two rural New England communities to understand strategies for making ends meet in rural places. Although one county draws wealthy retirees, and the other is remote and losing population, low-income workers in both communities struggle to make ends meet. The authors find that rural residents often work multiple formal or informal jobs, and …

Dish It Up! The Influence Of Kind Diningtm& Green House Model Food And Food Service Innovations On The Resident Experience In Residential Care Facilities., Mary E. Jensen

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to understand how innovative practices affect the satisfaction elder-care facility residents have with their food-related life. The study looks through the lenses of food and food service activities, related medical care activities, and facility design.

The Older Americans Act of 1965 defined the basic rights of elders in American society. The statement and objectives codified in that Act have provided the outline for eldercare in the community and in residential care facilities ever since. Legislative updates in 2017 more clearly identified “person-centered” care as the ideal in elderly care homes. Research using the diffusion …

Public Perceptions Of Adverse Childhood Experiences: Sentencing, Harm, And The Abuse Excuse, Crystal Marie Napoli Aug 2019

Public Perceptions Of Adverse Childhood Experiences: Sentencing, Harm, And The Abuse Excuse, Crystal Marie Napoli

Master's Theses and Capstones

The ten Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been shown to have an association with future health outcomes and criminal conduct (Felitti et al., 1998; Cannon, Davis, Hsi, & Bochte, 2016). While some scholars and practitioners seek to use these findings to formulate a more “trauma-informed” orientation towards criminal behavior, others are skeptical towards this perceived expansion of the “abuse excuse” into the criminal justice domain. This study used a multi-methodological design to explore attitudes towards offenders who have experienced the ACEs. The researcher distributed a survey containing fictional vignettes to 302 participants. The results revealed that participants gave more lenient …

Academic-Community Partnerships: Effectiveness Evaluated Beyond The Ivory Walls, Rosemary M. Caron, Jessica D. Ulrich-Schad, Catherine Lafferty Jul 2019

Academic-Community Partnerships: Effectiveness Evaluated Beyond The Ivory Walls, Rosemary M. Caron, Jessica D. Ulrich-Schad, Catherine Lafferty

Faculty Publications

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) has furthered our understanding of the working principles required for academic-community partnerships to address persistent public health problems. However, little is known about how effective these partnerships have been in eliminating or reducing community-based public health issues. To contribute to the literature in this area, the authors conducted a survey of U.S. schools and programs in public health and community groups working with these academic partners to: (1) identify the most common local public health issues addressed; (2) examine the characteristics of the partnership and the actual or perceived benefits and challenges for each partner; (3) …

When To Make The Sensory Social: Registering In Copresent Openings, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore Jul 2019

When To Make The Sensory Social: Registering In Copresent Openings, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore

Communication

This article provides the first detailed empirical analysis of naturally-occurring videorecorded openings during which participants make the sensory social through the action of registering – calling joint attention to a selected, publicly perceivable referent so others shift their sensory attention to it. Examining sequence-initial actions that register referents for which a participant is regarded as responsible, this study elucidates a systematic preference organization which observably guides when and how people initiate registering sequences sensitive to both referent ownership and referent value. Analysis shows how choosing to register an owned referent puts involved participants’ face, affiliation, and social relationship on the …

The Impact Of Abstinence-Only Sex Education Programs In The United States On Adolescent Sexual Outcomes, Sonja W. Heels Jul 2019

The Impact Of Abstinence-Only Sex Education Programs In The United States On Adolescent Sexual Outcomes, Sonja W. Heels

Perspectives

Though there are many evaluations of abstinence-only sex education programs in the United States, there is a relatively small body of literature exploring the programs’ impact specifically on adolescent sexual behavior. Thus, the purpose of this literature review is to examine the impact of abstinence-only sex education programs on adolescent sexual outcomes. The phrase “sexual outcomes” refers to attitudes, behaviors, and experiences of adolescents as a result of their sex education. After an overview of sex education in the United States, I discuss three major themes found in the most recent literature: abstinence and delaying the initiation of sex, consequences …

Interpersonal Relationships And The Effects Of Immigrant Status On Educational Attainment Of Immigrant Youth In The U.S., Rachel Diharce Jul 2019

Interpersonal Relationships And The Effects Of Immigrant Status On Educational Attainment Of Immigrant Youth In The U.S., Rachel Diharce

Perspectives

This literature review looks at the effects of immigrant status on educational achievement among immigrant youth in the United States. The massive influx of families immigrating to the United States in the past decade has brought an increasing amount of immigrant youth coming into US public schools. Educational achievement is one of the biggest predictors of life long success. Social class, race/ethnicity, cultural orientations and quality of schooling before and after migration are all factors that influence immigrant youths’ educational outcomes. However, the foundational influencer of immigrant youth’s educational outcomes are interpersonal relationships that immigrant youth have with their family, …

Climate-Change Views Of New Hampshire Primary Voters, Lawrence C. Hamilton Jun 2019

Climate-Change Views Of New Hampshire Primary Voters, Lawrence C. Hamilton

Carsey Publications

In this brief, author Lawrence Hamilton discusses the results of an April 2019 Granite State Poll conducted by the UNH Survey Center that asked 549 New Hampshire residents whether they planned to vote in the state’s 2020 presidential primary election and, if so, which candidate they favored. The survey also asked residents about their views on climate change. Hamilton reports that regardless of their candidate preferences, prospective voters in the New Hampshire Democratic primary agree with the scientific consensus that humans are changing Earth’s climate. Three-quarters of Republican primary voters favor President Trump, and most in this group do not …

Mapping The Food Landscape In New Hampshire, Jess Carson Jun 2019

Mapping The Food Landscape In New Hampshire, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

In this brief, Jess Carson explores the food landscape of New Hampshire, documenting where lower incomes and low population density might lead to food insecurity, and mapping the locations of various food sources. Much of the northern and western parts of the state have high proportions of low-income residents and low population density, compared with more southern parts of the state. In terms of food sources, retail locations roughly mirror the state’s population distribution, with many options throughout the southern tier of the state and concentration around the Interstate 93 corridor into Northern New Hampshire. While many food support sites, …
