The Status Of Women And Wife-Beating In The U S: A Multi-Level Analysis, Kersti Alice Yllo
The Status Of Women And Wife-Beating In The U S: A Multi-Level Analysis, Kersti Alice Yllo
Doctoral Dissertations
The relationship between status of women and wife-beating has been the subject of some debate. It has been argued that sexual inequality is one of the central causes of wife abuse (Dobash and Dobash, 1980; Martin, 1976). On the other hand, some claim that the charges being brought about by the Women's Movement are resulting in an increase in wife-beating. Researchers in the field of family violence have speculated on the connection between the two phenomena (Whitehurst, 1974; Straus, 1976; Dobash and Dobash, 1977). To date, the relationship between the status of women on the societal level and wife-beating has …
Consummatory Response Strength In The Analysis Of Taste-Aversion Learning, Arnold Lee Grossblatt
Consummatory Response Strength In The Analysis Of Taste-Aversion Learning, Arnold Lee Grossblatt
Doctoral Dissertations
Pavlovian conditioning has primarily employed motivationally neutral events as conditioned stimuli. Taste-aversion conditioning studies, on the other hand, use as conditioned stimuli flavored solutions with distinct motivational or response-determining properties. It is possible that many of the differences between taste-aversion conditioning and other forms of Pavlovian conditioning are related to this difference in the nature of the conditioned stimuli. This possibility was examined with regard to the nature of flavor salience in aversion conditioning. One flavor may appear more salient than another because of a difference in associability with illness, or because the more salient flavor supports a weaker, more …
English Word-Making, Richard Henry Lederer
English Word-Making, Richard Henry Lederer
Doctoral Dissertations
English Word-Making presents the content and methods of modern research in morphology in the form of a textbook for secondary school English students.
The opening section offers a rationale for the uses of morphology at the secondary level. The emergence of English as a subject in the curriculum is traced historically; and the study of morphology is related specifically to humanistic goals and to the enhancing of skills in language analysis, speaking, reading, vocabulary growth, grammar and usage study, spelling, composition, and literary interpretation.
The main body of the text consists of ten chapters, each exploring, diachronically and synchronically, a …
Spatial Ability, Mathematics Achievement, And Spatial Training In Male And Female Calculus Students, Joan Ferrini Mundy
Spatial Ability, Mathematics Achievement, And Spatial Training In Male And Female Calculus Students, Joan Ferrini Mundy
Doctoral Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of spatial training upon calculus achievement, spatial visualization, and tendency and ability to visualize solids of revolution in calculus, for college males and females. A random sample of 250 first-semester calculus students at the University of New Hampshire was apportioned into seven experimental groups, each containing males and females. Students were pretested on precalculus background, spatial visualization, and calculus background, and were assigned to one of three treatment conditions: audiovisual spatial training (AV), audio-vidual-tactual spatial training (AVT), and a control condition. The spatial training materials were organized into six …
The Effects Of Competition And External Rewards On Intrinsic Motivation, Gary Stephen Goldstein
The Effects Of Competition And External Rewards On Intrinsic Motivation, Gary Stephen Goldstein
Doctoral Dissertations
A number of studies have demonstrated that the presence of an external reward reduces intrinsic motivation. Deci's (1975) theory of cognitive evaluation and Lepper, Greene and Nisbett's (1973) overjustification hypothesis account for these findings using attribution theory. Basically, these tw.
Sex Role Stereotypes: A Study In Verbal Interaction, Edmond Sydney Temple
Sex Role Stereotypes: A Study In Verbal Interaction, Edmond Sydney Temple
Doctoral Dissertations
Sociologists appear in agreement that sex is a primary role allocator in our society, or, in the perspective of Hughes (1945), sex is a master status. Parsons and Bales (1955) have implicity built upon this in the formulation of their Sex Role Differentiation Theory in which role sets for male.
Reducing Disparity In Judicial Sentencing: A Social-Psychological Approach, Siegfried Ludwig Sporer
Reducing Disparity In Judicial Sentencing: A Social-Psychological Approach, Siegfried Ludwig Sporer
Doctoral Dissertations
Researchers from diverse disciplines--e.g. sociologists, criminologists, political scientists, legal observers, and most recently also psychologists--have studied judicial sentencing. More than half a century of research, employing multiple methodologies, strongly demonstrates that the unguided use (or abuse) of discretion has frequently led to vast disparity in judicial sentencing; i.e. large variations among sentences given for highly similar offenses and/or offenders. Among the various reform proposals reviewed, sentencing councils have been suggested as a constructive solution to reduce sentencing disparity without abandoning judicial discretion or displacing disparity to other agents in the criminal justice system.
The present research attempts to demonstrate the …
