Explanations Of Pedophilia: Review Of Empirical Research, Sharon Araji, David Finkelhor Mar 1985

Explanations Of Pedophilia: Review Of Empirical Research, Sharon Araji, David Finkelhor

Sociology

This article reviews empirical research to discover what support exists for theories that attempt to explain why adults become sexually interested in and involved with immature children. These theories are first organized into four basic categories: emotional congruence-why the adult congruence - why an emotional need to relate to a child; sexual arousl-why the adult could become sexually aroused by a child; blockage - why alternative sources of sexual and emotional gratification are not available; or disinhibition - why the adult is not deterred from such an interest by normal prohibitions. The review shows that the best experimental research has …

Cognitive Characteristics As Predictors Of Children's Understanding Of Safety And Accident Prevention (Reflection-Impulsivity, Causal Reasoning, Parent Style), Nina M. Coppens Jan 1985

Cognitive Characteristics As Predictors Of Children's Understanding Of Safety And Accident Prevention (Reflection-Impulsivity, Causal Reasoning, Parent Style), Nina M. Coppens

Doctoral Dissertations

In the present study, children's level of causal reasoning and cognitive style were considered as possible predictors of their understanding of safety and accident prevention. Understanding of safety and accident prevention were operationalized as differentiation of safe and unsafe situations and specification of measures for preventing accidents, respectively. Individual interviews were conducted with 112 children, aged 3 through 8 years, currently enrolled in either a daycare or after-school program.

An accurate understanding of safety and accident prevention was related to an understanding of causal relations and to a reflective cognitive style. However, multiple regression analyses revealed that level of causal …

Marital Power, Conflict And Violence (Negotiation Tactics, Egalitarian), Diane H. Coleman Jan 1985

Marital Power, Conflict And Violence (Negotiation Tactics, Egalitarian), Diane H. Coleman

Doctoral Dissertations

Conflict theory is used to analyze the relationship between marital power structure, the level of marital conflict and the rate of violence in a nationally representative sample of 2,143 American couples. Although previous authors suggest greater conflict in egalitarian relationships, other research demonstrates that there is less violence. Given the strong positive association between conflict and violence, a major question addressed in this research concerns this apparent contradiction.

Two explanations of this contradiction were empirically tested: (1) If the power structure is perceived as legitimate, the level of conflict and rate of violence may decrease, regardless of the actual power …

Risk And Uncertainty (Utility, Decision), Paul Snow Jan 1985

Risk And Uncertainty (Utility, Decision), Paul Snow

Doctoral Dissertations

The conventional theory of decision making under risk relies on axioms that reflect assumptions about people's subjective attitudes towards wealth. The assumptions are unverifiable, and the axioms are too restrictive. They forbid some decision rules that a plausibly rational decision maker ("DM") could find useful.

A new method, at once less restrictive and less dependent upon subjective assumptions, motivates expected utility techniques by assuming that a DM wishes to place an upper limit on the probability of ruin. All bounded-above, increasing functions defined over a suitable domain can serve as utility functions.

Now, DM can evaluate lotteries according to their …

Judging Control: When Can We Expect Expectations To Predict Judgments? (Contingency, Contrast Effects), Susan E. Newman Jan 1985

Judging Control: When Can We Expect Expectations To Predict Judgments? (Contingency, Contrast Effects), Susan E. Newman

Doctoral Dissertations

Two experiments were conducted to test the predictive validity of a model put forth by Alloy and Tabachnik (1984) to account for judgments of contingency. The authors contend that such judgments can be accounted for by determining the interaction of information contributed by "one's expectations" and by the objective "situation." It was argued here that those two components, independently or interactively, are not always sufficient to predict judgments; the same objective data may be judged differently in different contexts and sometimes contrarily to one's expectations. That is, contrast effects may occur. This argument was supported using two different paradigms. In …

Effects Of Field-Dependence/Independence And Sex On Patterns Of Achievement And Grading In A First-Semester Calculus Course (Cognitive Style, Remedial Mathematics, Grading Bias, Appraisal, College), Timothy John Kelly Jan 1985

Effects Of Field-Dependence/Independence And Sex On Patterns Of Achievement And Grading In A First-Semester Calculus Course (Cognitive Style, Remedial Mathematics, Grading Bias, Appraisal, College), Timothy John Kelly

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was twofold: first, to investigate effects of field-dependence/independence (f-d/i), sex, and different types of audiovisual remedial instruction on mathematics achievement (Experiment I); second to investigate the effects of student and grader cognitive style (f-d/i) and sex on calculus test grades (Experiment II).

One hundred fifty first-semester calculus students, identified by an algebra/trigonometry pretest as requiring trigonometry remediation, served as subjects for Experiment I. As measures of f-d/i, the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) and The Miniaturized Rod and Frame Test (MRFT) were administered to the subjects, who were apportioned into six experimental groups, representing three …

A Rate Comparison Model Of Concurrent Schedule Performance, Douglas Stuart Lea Jan 1985

A Rate Comparison Model Of Concurrent Schedule Performance, Douglas Stuart Lea

Doctoral Dissertations

A rate comparison model of concurrent schedule performance and foraging is proposed. The model is a molecular equalizing theory of matching, based on results from optimal foraging theory and corresponding data from behavioral ecology. It state that animals leave one concurrent alternative for another whenever their estimates of current local food rates fall below a criterion based on habitat-wide average rates. Linear operator rules are offered as among the most plausible rate estimation strategies. The model may be applicable to both schedule performance and foraging in patchy natural environments, even though differences between these situations may result in variations in …

Maine's New Juvenile Code: A Case Study In Juvenile Justice Reform, Dennis William Macdonald Jan 1985

Maine's New Juvenile Code: A Case Study In Juvenile Justice Reform, Dennis William Macdonald

Doctoral Dissertations

The history of juvenile justice in the United States is largely a history of failed reform efforts. The most significant of these efforts was the establishment of the juvenile court at the turn of the century and the idea of "socialized" juvenile justice on which it was based. Because the objective was rehabilitation rather than punishment, constitutional rights applicable in criminal justice proceedings were deemed unnecessary. In response to a wave of criticism of "socialized justice," the "post-Gault era" of juvenile justice reform emerged in the early 1960's. These reforms promised both justice and help to juveniles in trouble.

The …

The Evangelical New Light Clergy Of Northern New England, 1741-1755: A Typology (Great Awakening, Maine, New Hampshire, Revival), Laura Broderick Ricard Jan 1985

The Evangelical New Light Clergy Of Northern New England, 1741-1755: A Typology (Great Awakening, Maine, New Hampshire, Revival), Laura Broderick Ricard

Doctoral Dissertations

Based on the prosopographical analysis of twenty-five Maine and New Hampshire clergymen, this dissertation corrects the prevailing treatment of New Lights, who emerged during the Great Awakening, as if they were of a monolithic "mind." It counters the oversimplified labeling of mid eighteenth-century evangelicals with a typology that establishes subtle gradations of New Light piety according to appreciable differences in theology and religious practice. It examines the mysticism of the most extreme New Lights, and suggests that the strong pneumatic impulse that manifested itself in their violent yearnings for an emotionally satisfying relationship with God was a thread that continued …
