Young Adults’ Cohabitation And Dating Decisions During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Exploration Of Romantic And Developmental Context, Tyler B. Jamison, Jeremy B. Kanter
Young Adults’ Cohabitation And Dating Decisions During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Exploration Of Romantic And Developmental Context, Tyler B. Jamison, Jeremy B. Kanter
Faculty Publications
The COVID-19 pandemic caused significant upheaval for couples and families, particularly in terms of living arrangements. Emerging adults had to make quick decisions about where and with whom to shelter in place. In this grounded theory study, we explored how 22 young adults, predominantly living in the United States, navigated relationship decisions during the pandemic. The results suggest that participants were intentional about their choices, particularly in terms of moving in together (or not). The pandemic sometimes changed the timing of cohabitation or the pace of dating relationships; however, these decisions unfolded in tandem with common developmental tasks, such as …

Remembering Interactions With Others: The Role Of Personal Intelligence And Personality, Nikolay Dimitrov
Remembering Interactions With Others: The Role Of Personal Intelligence And Personality, Nikolay Dimitrov
Doctoral Dissertations
One relatively unexplored area in memory and personality research concerns the role that personal intelligence—i.e., a person’s ability to understand and reason about their own and others’ personalities—and personality traits may play in the way people think back to and remember their personal past. The current studies extended prior research by directly examining for the first time the relationship between personal intelligence, personality traits, and memory for specific aspects of the personal past. Across two studies, 391 participants (NStudy 1 = 141; NStudy 2 = 250) of different age groups completed a Qualtrics survey comprised of open-ended narrative prompts and …
Knowing Me, Knowing You: The Role Of Personal Intelligence In Romantic Relationship Conflict Communication, Victoria Bryan
Knowing Me, Knowing You: The Role Of Personal Intelligence In Romantic Relationship Conflict Communication, Victoria Bryan
Doctoral Dissertations
People bring to their relationships a variety of personality traits that guide their interactions with others. However, an individual’s unique set of needs, preferences and skills can make conflict a near-inevitable part of most relationships. Personal intelligence is a promising new construct with implications for how couples communicate during conflict. Named in parallel with spatial, social, and similar intelligences, personal intelligence involves the ability to reason about the personality of oneself and others. People high in personal intelligence show an increased capacity to recognize the motives that guide other’s behavior, which they use to adjust how they approach their interpersonal …
Conditionally Automated Vehicles As A Safe And Productive Workspace, Nabil Al Nahin Ch
Conditionally Automated Vehicles As A Safe And Productive Workspace, Nabil Al Nahin Ch
Doctoral Dissertations
Future automated vehicles will allow drivers to reclaim some of their driving time and perform personal or work-related activities while the car is in automated driving mode. However, traditional automotive user interfaces (UIs) are not designed to support such activities. For a vehicle to be considered a safe and productive workspace, we will have to explore how drivers can interact with emerging UIs in a car to engage in complex non-driving related tasks (NDRTs) and safely resume driving when needed. In the second chapter of this thesis, we present a user-elicitation study where we investigate how drivers would want to …
Essays In Public Policy And Mental Health, Bryce Stanley
Essays In Public Policy And Mental Health, Bryce Stanley
Doctoral Dissertations
In this work I examine how various public policies can influence mental health outcomes. As mental health issues can be created or exacerbated by numerous different factors, many types of public policy can have mental health implications, perhaps not always intended by policy makers. In many cases, these implications are ambiguous from a theoretical level, making empirical research in the area important. Specifically, I model how labor market policies with minimum wages and Earned Income Tax Credit, health policy with the Dependent Coverage Mandate aspect of the Affordable Care Act, and social policy with recreational cannabis laws impact mental health …
Associations Of Dietary Patterns With Brain Volume In The Boston Puerto Rican Health Study, Chris Guarino
Associations Of Dietary Patterns With Brain Volume In The Boston Puerto Rican Health Study, Chris Guarino
Master's Theses and Capstones
Adherence to the MeD (Mediterranean Diet), MIND (Mediterranean-Dietary Approaches to Reduce Hypertension Intervention for Neurocognitive Delay), and other dietary patterns may benefit cognitive function among Hispanic/Latino adults. Greater regional and total brain volumetric measures are associated with an increased risk of dementia, but whether the MeD and MIND dietary patterns relate to brain volume among Hispanic/Latino adults remains unclear. The objective of the current study was to quantify the associations of the MeD, MIND, and empirically derived dietary patterns with brain volume among Hispanic/Latino adults. We used data from the longitudinal Boston Puerto Rican Health Study. Approximately 12.7 y from …
Relationship Among Police Officers’ Alcohol Use, Child Sexual Abuse Material Exposure And Department Practices And Policies, Mahmuda Akter
Relationship Among Police Officers’ Alcohol Use, Child Sexual Abuse Material Exposure And Department Practices And Policies, Mahmuda Akter
Master's Theses and Capstones
This study explores the complex interplay of departmental practices and policies, exposure to child sexual abuse material (CSAM), social support, group connectedness, and gender in relation to alcohol consumption among police officers. The cross-sectional study utilizes self-reported data from 528 police investigators, forensic examiners and others connected with the criminal justice system from across the United States. Analysis reveals exposure to CSAM does not demonstrate a significant correlation with drinking habits among police officers. However, one significant positive relationship was observed between viewing CSAM that involves children aged 6 to 10 and drinking patterns. Furthermore, departmental practices are not associated …

Science is increasingly a collaborative pursuit. Although the modern scientific enterprise owes much to individuals working at the core of their field, humanity is increasingly confronted by highly complex problems that require the integration of a variety of disciplinary and methodological expertise. In 2016, the U.S. National Science Foundation launched an initiative prioritizing support for convergence research as a means of “solving vexing research problems, in particular, complex problems focusing on societal needs.” We discuss our understanding of the objectives of convergence research and describe in detail the conditions and processes likely to generate successful convergence research. We use our …

Gender (In)Equity In Global Mental Health Research: A Call To Action, The Women In Global Mental Health Research Group, Kelly Rose-Clarke
Faculty Publications
In this commentary, we build on work by Gurung and colleagues which highlighted gender inequity in the global mental health research workforce in Nepal (Gurung et al., 2021). We seek to increase awareness of the under-representation of women in global mental health research and its consequences, and we call for change. By women, we refer to all people who identify as women, including trans people. The commentary is informed by conversations with women who are global mental health researchers in the Global North and South at various stages of their careers.

Children grow up in homes where varying environmental and socioeconomic contexts have a bearing on their emotional and behavioral health (EBH). This study used data from a representative sample of the child supplement of the US National Health Information Survey (NHIS) and applied the social determinants of health (SDoH) framework to explore factors associated with child EBH. We conducted a path analysis of the child’s EBH measured by the strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ) from their macro and socioeconomic contexts, e.g., policy, household, and other health system risk factors. For children in the sample, aged 4 to 17 years old …

Single But Not Solitary: A Call For Nuance In The Study Emerging Adult Singlehood, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer, Tyler Jamison
Single But Not Solitary: A Call For Nuance In The Study Emerging Adult Singlehood, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer, Tyler Jamison
Faculty Publications
Both research and theory demonstrate that single adults are not a homogeneous group. However, scholars continue to rely on participants to self-identify their relationship status from a list that includes multiple forms of romantic involvement (e.g., casual dating, committed relationship, engaged, married), but only one category of non-involvement: “single.” This approach is especially limiting when studying emerging adults, who are often exploring different forms of sexual and romantic engagement. Consequently, we developed a two-step approach that contextualizes singlehood through the romantic and sexual activities of self-reported single emerging adults. Across three samples of U.S. emerging adults, we found that about …

Rainbow Colormaps Are Not All Bad, Colin Ware, Maureen Stone, Danielle Albers Szafir
Rainbow Colormaps Are Not All Bad, Colin Ware, Maureen Stone, Danielle Albers Szafir
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Some 15 years ago, Visualization Viewpoints published an influential article titled Rainbow Color Map (Still) Considered Harmful (Borland and Taylor, 2007). The paper argued that the “rainbow colormap’s characteristics of confusing the viewer, obscuring the data and actively misleading interpretation make it a poor choice for visualization.” Subsequent articles often repeat and extend these arguments, so much so that avoiding rainbow colormaps, along with their derivatives, has become dogma in the visualization community. Despite this loud and persistent recommendation, scientists continue to use rainbow colormaps. Have we failed to communicate our message, or do rainbow colormaps offer advantages that have …
The Role Of Epistemics In Storytelling, Ashley Kayla White
The Role Of Epistemics In Storytelling, Ashley Kayla White
Comm-entary
Epistemics play a vital role in storytelling sequences. In fact, laying the necessary epistemic groundwork before engaging in a storytelling sequence may make the difference between successful and unsuccessful story receptions. Taking a conversation analytic approach and drawing from one story-rich recording, this paper aims to explore the role of epistemics in storytelling sequences captured in day-to-day interaction. To achieve this, several critical conversation analytical concepts are employed. These include repair, expansion, physical gesturing, preference organization, reference, delicate formulations, assessments, and more. This paper adds to a framework of conversation analysis scholarship by drawing explicit connections between two distinct concepts …
Framing Radical Care And Radical Empathy In The #Blacklivesmatter Movement, Ashley White
Framing Radical Care And Radical Empathy In The #Blacklivesmatter Movement, Ashley White
Comm-entary
This thesis looks at the ongoing media framing of the #BlackLivesMatter movement (primarily in the realm of journalism) to argue that incorporating elements of radical care and radical empathy in how we communicate stories can lead to transformative change. The paper looks at the history of the movement, with attention paid to the major cases that have sparked outrage, protests, and policy changes in the United States in the last decade. Attention is also paid to the #SayHerName movement and the role of intersectionality in whether some stories reach prominence or not. Following this, a comprehensive explanation of the concepts …

Legality Is Not Morality: The Legal Socialization Of Prosocial Rule-Breakers, Paul Hennigan
Legality Is Not Morality: The Legal Socialization Of Prosocial Rule-Breakers, Paul Hennigan
Doctoral Dissertations
Legal socialization research is the backbone of many educational, forensic, and intervention programs aiming to prevent criminal behavior, yet researchers in this field and other disciplines define rule-breaking exclusively as harmful/antisocial behavior. This classification fails to explain rule-breaking motivated by prosocial intentions (e.g., clashing with police over racial injustice, hiding Jewish families during Nazi Germany, and violating racial segregation laws during the civil rights movement). The studies described here intend to adapt two legal socialization models so they clearly distinguish prosocial rule-breaking from antisocial rule-breaking. Across three studies, I present findings that validate the distinction between morality and legality, identify …
