Welfare Queens Or Courageous Survivors? Strengths Of Women In Poverty, Victoria L. Banyard Jan 2008

Welfare Queens Or Courageous Survivors? Strengths Of Women In Poverty, Victoria L. Banyard

The University Dialogue

The number of people living in poverty in the United States is staggering and yet to most of us those people are just statistics. A growing body of social science research clearly documents the negative consequences for the physical and mental health of people struggling to meet their basic needs (e.g. Recker Rayburn, 2007). Absent critical analysis of the historical and social factors that contribute to poverty, negative stereotypes and victim blaming arguments flourish – further perpetuating the problem (e.g. Bullock & Lott, 2001). This proposed position paper confronts and discourages this trend by shedding light on one of the …

Situationist Torts, John D. Hanson, Michael Mccann Jan 2008

Situationist Torts, John D. Hanson, Michael Mccann

Law Faculty Scholarship

This Article calls for a situationist approach to teaching law, particularly tort law. This new approach would begin by rejecting the dominant, common-sense account of human behavior (sometimes called dispositionism) and replacing it with the more accurate account being revealed by the social sciences, such as social psychology, social cognition, cognitive neuroscience, and other mind sciences. At its core, situationism is occupied with identifying and bridging the gap between what actually moves us, on one hand, and what we imagine moves us, on the other. Recognizing that gap is critical for understanding what roles tort law (among other areas of …

Pornography, Coercion, And Copyright Law 2.0, Ann Bartow Jan 2008

Pornography, Coercion, And Copyright Law 2.0, Ann Bartow

Law Faculty Scholarship

The lack of regulation of the production of pornography in the United States leaves pornography performers exposed to substantial risks. Producers of pornography typically respond to attempts to regulate pornography as infringements upon free speech. At the same time, large corporations involved in the production and sale of pornography rely on copyright law's complex regulatory framework to protect their pornographic content from copying and unauthorized distribution. Web 2.0 also facilitates the production and distribution of pornography by individuals. These user-generators produce their own pornography, often looking to monetize their productions themselves via advertising revenues and subscription models. Much like their …

Viewing Virtual Property Ownership Through The Lens Of Innovation, Ryan G. Vacca Jan 2008

Viewing Virtual Property Ownership Through The Lens Of Innovation, Ryan G. Vacca

Law Faculty Scholarship

Over the past several years scholars have wrestled with how property rights in items created in virtual worlds should be conceptualized. Regardless of how the property is conceptualized and what property theory best fits, most agree the law ought to recognize virtual property as property and vest someone with those rights.

The Big Questions Of Personality Psychology, John D. Mayer Jan 2008

The Big Questions Of Personality Psychology, John D. Mayer

UNH Personality Lab

Personality psychology had its origins in people who sought answers to big quesitons. A 2007 article from the laboratory surveyed the intellectual history of the big questions that inspired the discipline, and 20 questions were identified that were most important to the field. Of these, four in particular seemed especially pertinent.

To hear a bit about the study, try this audio-narrated slide show in powerpoint.

Introduction To Parts Of Personality, John D. Mayer

UNH Personality Lab

I look at the study of personality as examining four topics: (1) identifying personality, (2) its parts, (3) its organization, and (4) its development – the systems framework for personality. Personality’s parts are absolutely central to personality.

Illusory Judgments Under Conditions Of Uncertainty: Reasoning Errors Related To Paranormal And Religious Beliefs, Erin C. Goforth Jan 2008

Illusory Judgments Under Conditions Of Uncertainty: Reasoning Errors Related To Paranormal And Religious Beliefs, Erin C. Goforth

Doctoral Dissertations

This research examined the predictors of illusory judgments of prediction under conditions of uncertainty. Study 1 investigated the believability of an experimental manipulation that required participants to choose a strategy for target object selection. Study 2 expanded upon Study 1 by giving participants an additional choice strategy (e.g., a computer's selection). In both Study 1 and Study 2, participants relied on the paranormal strategy (e.g., a psychic) to a greater degree under conditions of uncertainty than under conditions of certainty. Study 3 replicated these results using a between subjects design but also expanded upon Study 1 and 2 by examining …

The Venetian Blind Effect, Binocular Luster, And Binocular Rivalry, Richard S. Hetley Jan 2008

The Venetian Blind Effect, Binocular Luster, And Binocular Rivalry, Richard S. Hetley

Doctoral Dissertations

When one views a square-wave grating and changes the average luminance or contrast of the monocular images relative to each other, at least three perceptual phenomena occur. These are the Venetian blind effect, or a perceived rotation of the bars around individual vertical axes; binocular luster, or a perceived shimmering; and binocular rivalry, or an alternating perception between the views of the two eyes. In this paper, it is shown that increasing the dichoptic luminance modulation leads to these three phenomena in sequence, while increasing dichoptic contrast modulation generally only leads to perceived rotation.

It is also shown that average …

Law Enforcement's Reconceptualization Of Juvenile Prostitutes From Delinquency Offenders To Child Sexual Abuse Victims In Six Us Cities, Stephanie Halter Jan 2008

Law Enforcement's Reconceptualization Of Juvenile Prostitutes From Delinquency Offenders To Child Sexual Abuse Victims In Six Us Cities, Stephanie Halter

Doctoral Dissertations

The involvement of youth in prostitution has proven to be a difficult and complex issue for law enforcement, child welfare, and social service agencies to confront. This stems from the complicated social and legal aspects of the problem, which have created considerable ambiguity in how to recognize, define and, ultimately, handle juveniles engaging in prostitution. This research project examined how juvenile prostitutes were conceptualized by law enforcement, as victims or offenders, by examining the law enforcement response to this social problem. One hundred and twenty-six juvenile prostitute's case files from six law enforcement agencies in major U.S. cities were reviewed …

The Activation Of Stereotypical Knowledge, Karla A. Lassonde Jan 2008

The Activation Of Stereotypical Knowledge, Karla A. Lassonde

Doctoral Dissertations

The effects of stereotypical knowledge on behaviors and beliefs have been widely examined in psychology. Early work examined the conscious, explicit expression of stereotypes. However, it has become increasingly difficult to use explicit tasks to measure stereotypical beliefs because participants often censor their beliefs so that their responses appear socially desirable. Implicit measures that indirectly measure stereotypical knowledge have recently been used as an alternative.

The goal of the experiments presented in this dissertation was to assess the presence of stereotypical knowledge through an implicit measure of reading comprehension that does not reflect social desirability. Across several experiments, participants read …

The Local Land Use Process In New Hampshire: Does It Contribute To Sprawl?, Clayton Robert Mitchell Jan 2008

The Local Land Use Process In New Hampshire: Does It Contribute To Sprawl?, Clayton Robert Mitchell

Doctoral Dissertations

In New Hampshire, local communities confront development related impacts, such as, environmental degradation, loss of open space, economic and social structure-based changes, and community character. Local land use regulation is the principal tool available to the municipality that seeks to manage problems associated with growth. The policy decision process employed to develop these policy responses is a complex process of social and political interactions. These decisions and processes are rooted in the community master plan. The master plan serves as the blueprint for a community's vision and its goals. Unfortunately, our understanding of this process is limited.

The policy sciences …

The Effect Of Component Recognition On Flexibility And Speech Recognition Performance In A Spoken Question Answering System, Mike Dalton Jan 2008

The Effect Of Component Recognition On Flexibility And Speech Recognition Performance In A Spoken Question Answering System, Mike Dalton

Doctoral Dissertations

A spoken question answering system that recognizes questions as full sentences performs well when users ask one of the questions defined. A system that recognizes component words and finds an equivalent defined question might be more flexible, but is likely to have decreased speech recognition performance, leading to a loss in overall system success. The research described in this document compares the advantage in flexibility to the loss in recognition performance when using component recognition.

Questions posed by participants were processed by a system of each type. As expected, the component system made frequent recognition errors while detecting words (word …

The Fallacy Of Endless Growth: Exposing Capitalism's Insustainability, William S. Strauss Jan 2008

The Fallacy Of Endless Growth: Exposing Capitalism's Insustainability, William S. Strauss

Doctoral Dissertations

What if we were to have 100 years of no growth? What if conditions were such that there is no future scenario under which growth will ever occur again? We might characterize this as impossible, as a vision that violates the outcome that we as innovative people must realize.

In the document that follows I will show you our world as it must be sometime in the future. I will describe a world in which the real growth of the world economy is zero and remains zero. I will tell a story of a world that is so different from …

Career Self-Efficacy Psycho-Educational Group Model For Emerging Adults Using Positive Psychology Interventions, Ann C. Strachan Jan 2008

Career Self-Efficacy Psycho-Educational Group Model For Emerging Adults Using Positive Psychology Interventions, Ann C. Strachan

Master's Theses and Capstones

Emerging adulthood is becoming recognized in research as a unique developmental phase where young people explore role identity, relationships, values and beliefs, and their potential for different vocational pursuits. Career counseling is not often considered by individuals who are experiencing difficulties in making optimal career choices, yet evidence supports the need for career interventions that address both career search strategies and personal growth. Positive psychology's emphasis on developing one's strengths as a venue for career satisfaction and overall well-being is an approach that may best assist emerging adults to find out what they are good at doing, and develop positive …

How Nurses Perceive Patient Suffering, Sandra J. Tanis

Master's Theses and Capstones

Suffering is a complex and multidimensional experience that is individual in nature and deeply personal. Effecting all aspects of being---physical, psychological/emotional, sociocultural, spiritual---suffering may impact all dimensions of a patient's life. The purpose of this study is to explore nurses' perception of patients who suffer. The study aims to raise the level of awareness of patient suffering for nurses, and thereby serve as a basis for reflecting on the impact of their nursing care on the health of the individual and patient outcomes. A qualitative study explores how a group of eight nurses described suffering in their patients. Themes, which …
