The Prevention Of Childhood Sexual Abuse., David Finkelhor Sep 2009

The Prevention Of Childhood Sexual Abuse., David Finkelhor

Sociology

Abstract

David Finkelhor examines initiatives to prevent child sexual abuse, which have focused on two primary strategies-offender management and school-based educational programs. Recent major offender managment initiatives have included registering sex offenders, notifying communities about their presence, conducting background employment checks, controlling where offenders can live, and imposing longer prison sentences. Although these initiatives win approval from both the public and policy makers, little evidence exists that they are effective in preventing sexual abuse. Moreover, these initiatives, cautions Finkelhor, are based on an overly stereotyped characterization of sexual abusers as pedophiles, guileful strangers who prey on children in public and …

New-School Trademark Dilution: Famous Among The Juvenile Consuming Public, Alexandra J. Roberts Jun 2009

New-School Trademark Dilution: Famous Among The Juvenile Consuming Public, Alexandra J. Roberts

Law Faculty Scholarship

The recently enacted Trademark Dilution Revision Act of 2006 recalibrated the degree of fame necessary to garner protection: the TDRA applies only to a mark "widely recognized by the general consuming public of the United States as a designation of source of the goods or services of the mark’s owner." By privileging those major players who succeed in turning their brands into household names, the TDRA strengthens incentives for mark-owners to ensure their logos and brand names are well-recognized not only among adult consumers, but also among children. This Article examines a set of marketing behaviors aimed at children that …

Parsing The Plagiary Scandals In History And Law, Arthur Austin Jun 2009

Parsing The Plagiary Scandals In History And Law, Arthur Austin

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “In 2002 the history of History was scandal. The narrative started when a Pulitzer Prize winning professor was caught foisting bogus Vietnam War exploits as background for classroom discussion. His fantasy lapse prefaced a more serious irregularity—the author of the Bancroft Prize book award was accused of falsifying key research documents. The award was rescinded. The year reached a crescendo with two plagiarism cases “that shook the history profession to its core.”

Stephen Ambrose and Doris Kearns Goodwin were “crossover” celebrities: esteemed academics—Pulitzer winners—with careers embellished by a public intellectual reputation. The media nurtured a Greek Tragedy —two superstars …

Behavior Of First-Year College Students, Kristin Kashgegian May 2009

Behavior Of First-Year College Students, Kristin Kashgegian

Perspectives

This is a quantitative study of depression, self-esteem, smoking and drinking behaviors among first year college students. The study results from a sample of 170 first year undergraduate students at the University of New Hampshire. Using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale, and the Short Alcohol Dependence Data (SADD) scale, results show that sex significantly predicts depression, even when controlling for self-esteem, alcohol scale scores, and smoking. Being female is associated with higher depression scores. When measuring self-esteem, results show that self-esteem is significantly associated with depression. Lower self-esteem is significantly associated with higher depression. Results …

Familicide: Risk Factors, Characteristics Of The Offender, Characteristics Of The Crime Of Familicide, And The Prevalence Of Suicide Following Familicide, Valerie R. Barthell, Kathleen M. Shelton

Perspectives

This study will be examining the risk factors to familicide, the characteristics of the offenders of familicide, the characteristics of the crime, and the prevalence of suicide following familicide. Of the literature reviewed it has been found that there are risk factors to familicide, there are known characteristics of the crime of familicide, and suicide is prevalent following familicide (Wilson et at., 1995; Brewer & Paulsen, 1999; Harper &Voigt, 2007). Findings are expected to suggest that there will be a higher proportion of cases in which the offender felt as though they were under immense stress due to the stresses …

Deep In Guyland: College Age Guys With Adhd Speak On Facebook, James D. Blauvelt May 2009

Deep In Guyland: College Age Guys With Adhd Speak On Facebook, James D. Blauvelt

Perspectives

Michael Kimmel’s book Guyland has been touted as a must read look into the secret lives of guys, the next step to understanding the troubled generation of college age guys. After reading the book I found I had insight into many things in my life that I had never really stopped to analyze. It also left me with unanswered questions, which were spawned mostly from one sentence in the book. “No wonder Guys… are six times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than girls.”(Kimmel pg.54). As a college age guy with ADHD, I can say with certainty that it …

The College Transition: What Changes, Who Changes, And Why?, Jacqueline Finnerty, Simon Spadaro-Bliss May 2009

The College Transition: What Changes, Who Changes, And Why?, Jacqueline Finnerty, Simon Spadaro-Bliss

Perspectives

To assess changes in student behavior between high school and college, and any factors contributing to behavioral changes, eight students from the University of New Hampshire were interviewed. To determine if changes in environment, or a greater distance from home, lead to greater changes in behavior, half of participants interviewed were in-state students and half were out-of-state students. Participants were interviewed on their opinions toward college and differences between high school and college in four areas: relationships, alcohol use, academics, and group participation. Interviews with participants were recorded and later transcribed. The transcriptions were then compared, looking for themes both …

Literature Review, Jaclyn Massey May 2009

Literature Review, Jaclyn Massey

Perspectives

In 2007 there were a total of 2, 293, 257 prisoners in the United States (US Department of Justice). The number of individuals incarcerated in the U.S. has been increasing over the last 30 years (Jones & Pratt 2008). There are a number of negative consequences associated with the rising number of prison inmates. This increase in prisoners has led to an increase in homicide, violence and sexual assaults within prison walls (Colvin 1992). Approximately 300,000 inmates per year report being victims of sexual violence (Anderson 2001). There are 196,000 male prisoners every year who fall victim to sexual assaults …

The Influence Of The Media On The Epidemic Of Eating Disorders In The United States, Anne Mathe May 2009

The Influence Of The Media On The Epidemic Of Eating Disorders In The United States, Anne Mathe

Perspectives

There is an epidemic happening in the United States. It is highly visible, yet it is still largely ignored. It affects women ninety percent of the time but can also affect men, and has been seen recently in younger and younger people (Hesse-Biber et al., 2006). It is an epidemic of eating disorders, and anyone who has lived through the past few decades can see that it has gotten worse. This paper will discuss several ways in which our society has contributed to the increase in eating disorders, namely in the use of visual portrayals of extremely thin women, the …

The Effects Of Sports Involvement And Coaching Styles On Self-Esteem, Self-Perception, And Mental Development On Adolescent Athletes, Janna Stadvec May 2009

The Effects Of Sports Involvement And Coaching Styles On Self-Esteem, Self-Perception, And Mental Development On Adolescent Athletes, Janna Stadvec

Perspectives

This paper focuses on the relationship between sport involvement and effective and ineffective styles of coaching on the overall development of adolescent athletes. The self-esteem, self-perception, and mental development of adolescent athletes are both positively and negatively affected by their involvement and experiences on organized sports teams, and by the coaching they receive on those teams. Although sports have numerous benefits for children’s overall development, I will focus on these three specific areas of development.

I will first develop a background of the concept of organized sports teams and then follow with two subjects; sport participation and involvement, and coaching …

Revisiting The Regulation Debate: The Effect Of Food Marketing On Childhood Obesity, Nicole E. Hunter Apr 2009

Revisiting The Regulation Debate: The Effect Of Food Marketing On Childhood Obesity, Nicole E. Hunter

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “Despite the widespread concern regarding childhood obesity, there is broad divergence of opinion regarding responsibility for the crisis. Whether the government, food industry, or parents are accountable has become the focus of much debate. Public health groups have attempted various strategies to confront childhood obesity, such as litigation, legislation, and government regulation. While many researchers and advocates agree that government should play an affirmative role with respect to childhood obesity, they are very much divided over what that role should be. For example, although none of these acts has become law, eighty-six bills have been proposed regarding obesity since …

The Elderly And Health Care Rationing, George P. Smith Ii Apr 2009

The Elderly And Health Care Rationing, George P. Smith Ii

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “The allocation of health care resources involves a societal determination of what resources should be devoted to a particular program. The allocation process is typically performed on a ―macro‖ level, with allocation decisions often affecting only statistical lives. In contrast to the identifiable lives often affected by health care rationing, statistical lives affected by allocation decisions are much more readily sacrificed. A common means of deciding health care allocation is through political processes. Government decisions pertaining to health care spending and regulation typically involve allocation determinations. For example, the Medicare and Medicaid programs allocate resources for numerous purposes. Hospitals, …
