The Effect Of Socio-Economic Status And Related Stress On Physical Health, Makenzie Keene May 2010

The Effect Of Socio-Economic Status And Related Stress On Physical Health, Makenzie Keene

Perspectives

This review is designed to investigate how socioeconomic status, and the stress related to it, can impact physical health. Much of the research relating to this topic focuses on how low socioeconomic status effects health. However, it is very important to understand the different ways that all classes effect health outcomes. An important mediating factor in the relationship between socioeconomic status and health is chronic stress. The presence of chronic stress can produce serious negative health outcomes. High stress appears on all levels of the social hierarchy, but formulates for unique reasons within the different classes.

The Effects Of Family Income, Geography, And Structure On Juvenile Crime, Kathryn Miller

Perspectives

This paper looks to explore the effect that family income, geography, and structure have on juvenile crime. These three categories have all been theorized and researched, which will help to provide a backbone for this paper. Though there are many other factors that have been linked to juvenile crime, I will focus only on these three.

Contact Theory As A Framework For Experiential Activities As Diversity Education: An Exploratory Study, Jayson O. Seaman, Jesse Beightol, Paul Shirilla, Bart Crawford May 2010

Contact Theory As A Framework For Experiential Activities As Diversity Education: An Exploratory Study, Jayson O. Seaman, Jesse Beightol, Paul Shirilla, Bart Crawford

Kinesiology

Participation in experiential education is said to enhance people's appreciation for diversity. This article reports on a study that found significant changes in participants' attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors following a nonformal diversity education program using adventure-based and community-service activities. Additionally, hypothesized program conditions, as outlined by contact theory, were significantly predictive of outcomes, although majority and minority participants differed on their perceptions of these conditions. These findings suggest that experiential activities may be considered a viable approach to diversity education in nonformal settings, assuming key conditions are met. Implications for practice and directions for future research are discussed.

The Educational Pipeline To Law School—Too Broken And Too Narrow To Provide Diversity, Sarah E. Redfield May 2010

The Educational Pipeline To Law School—Too Broken And Too Narrow To Provide Diversity, Sarah E. Redfield

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “The legal profession remains markedly out of sync with the changing demographics of the country, where the population is projected to be over 50 percent minority by 2050. Against this trend, law school enrollment hovers around 20 percent minority, including over 7 percent Asian students. Enrollment of some minority groups shows a decline rather than improvement. These numbers will remain static or continue to decline if the profession does not pay far more serious attention to the current leaks and gaps along the educational pipeline, far before students seek admission at the law school gates.”

‘A Moral Being Is An Accountable Being’: Adam Smith And The Ethical Foundations, Melvin J. Dubnick Apr 2010

‘A Moral Being Is An Accountable Being’: Adam Smith And The Ethical Foundations, Melvin J. Dubnick

Faculty Publications

In this paper I argue that among the “lost legacies” of Adam Smith’s work was a perspective on human morality that warrants his consideration as the first modern theorist of accountable governance. I elaborate on my rationale for that claim after reviewing the particular writings in Smith’s principal work (in this case TMS rather than WN) which I believe establish his foundational role in such a theory and discussing the factors behind its “lost” status.

Environmental Attitudes Towards Wine Tourism, Christopher Taylor, Nelson Barber, Cynthia Deale Mar 2010

Environmental Attitudes Towards Wine Tourism, Christopher Taylor, Nelson Barber, Cynthia Deale

Hospitality Management

Wine tourism marketers frequently seek new ways to promote destinations, often executing ecologically sustainable practices. As consumer environmental knowledge of a wine tourism destination increases, consumer attitudes change, influencing perceptions of the environmental policies of a wine region. In this consumer-driven economy, it is therefore important to search for effective ways to market destinations, and one approach is selective marketing. By focusing on consumers in this manner, it is possible to understand better their concerns and motivations, which should aid in marketing and advertising efforts. This study investigated wine consumers environmental concerns and attitudes about wine regions. Results suggest environmental …

Bringing To Heel The Elephants In The Economy: The Case For Ending “Too Big To Fail”, Ann Graham Feb 2010

Bringing To Heel The Elephants In The Economy: The Case For Ending “Too Big To Fail”, Ann Graham

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “Financial institutions labeled “Too Big To Fail” (TBTF) are those whose insolvency could shake the foundations of the U.S. financial system and our economy. The term “too big to fail” became part of our popular vocabulary in the wake of federal bank regulatory intervention to prevent the failure of Continental Illinois National Bank in 1984. After the banking and savings-and-loan crisis of the 1980s, the pros and cons of the TBTF policy were extensively debated. Despite Congressional efforts to limit application of TBTF, the doctrine has returned with renewed vigor during the current crisis. Responding on an ad hoc …

Intellectual Growth For Undergraduate Students: Evaluation Results From An Undergraduate Research Conference, Sharyn J. Potter, Eleanor Abrams, Lisa Townson, Cameron P. Wake, Julie E. Williams

Sociology

We describe the development and evaluation of the university-wide, weeklong undergraduate research conference at the University of New Hampshire. Despite increases nationally in the number of undergraduate research conferences (URC), there has been little research examining the social and educational impact of these events on student presenters. We describe the development and evaluation of the university-wide, weeklong URC at the University of New Hampshire. A survey administered to URC participants over a four year period revealed that research culminating in a presentation at the URC was one of the more influential events students experienced during their undergraduate years and students …
