Stuck In The Middle: A Case Study Of Conflict Experiences By A First-Time Community College President, Martha Parker-Magagna Jan 2012

Stuck In The Middle: A Case Study Of Conflict Experiences By A First-Time Community College President, Martha Parker-Magagna

Doctoral Dissertations

Leadership models for community college presidents are in a major transformation from traditional hierarchical, positional authority to participatory models of decision making. As leadership becomes more participatory, and educators experiment with more team and collaborative approaches to leadership, increased conflict is a likely outcome. Inclusiveness often brings diverse voices into decision making, and empowerment of a variety of individuals brings a shift in traditional power dynamics. Different interests may create conflict, and leaders will need to find ways to negotiate these differences in order to enhance creative adaptation of a community college to its changing environment.

This study explores the …

Flatfish Stock Enhancement: Examining Conditioning Strategies To Promote Success, Michelle Lynn Walsh Jan 2012

Flatfish Stock Enhancement: Examining Conditioning Strategies To Promote Success, Michelle Lynn Walsh

Doctoral Dissertations

Conditioning is the process of providing individuals reared for stock enhancement with some degree of "wild" experience prior to release. Flatfish trained for "wild" conditions may more easily and successfully transition to natural environments. This dissertation identifies strategies that optimize feeding-related performance of flatfish in the hatchery and subsequently post release in the wild.

The influence of live feed conditioning on feeding performance of juvenile winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus, was investigated. In the hatchery, fish reared on live feeds exhibited significantly higher survival (P < 0.0001) and growth (P < 0.01) than those reared on formulated feed. Once released into cages in the wild, amphipodreared fish had higher mean Stomach Contents Index and RNA/DNA of all feed types, including wild fish. Wild and worm-reared fish exhibited the most similar survival, baseline RNA/DNA values, overall stomach fullness, and diet composition profiles over time.

Pre-release, experimental cage conditioning was conducted for stocking Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, in Wakasa Bay, Japan. …

Fairness In A Data Center, Mikkel Hagen Jan 2012

Fairness In A Data Center, Mikkel Hagen

Doctoral Dissertations

Existing data centers utilize several networking technologies in order to handle the performance requirements of different workloads. Maintaining diverse networking technologies increases complexity and is not cost effective. This results in the current trend to converge all traffic into a single networking fabric. Ethernet is both cost-effective and ubiquitous, and as such it has been chosen as the technology of choice for the converged fabric. However, traditional Ethernet does not satisfy the needs of all traffic workloads, for the most part, due to its lossy nature and, therefore, has to be enhanced to allow for full convergence. The resulting technology, …

An Empirical Investigation: How Small To Mid-Sized Enterprises Use Innovation On The Path Toward Ecological Sustainability, Shelley F. Mitchell

Doctoral Dissertations

Dependence upon the natural environment is redefining the business relationship between ecological, economic, and social systems. In addition, the major market forces of diminishing natural resources, extreme transparency, and increasing social expectations are reshaping a new sustainability path for companies. This empirical investigation explored the phenomenon of sustainability in small to mid-sized enterprises, focusing on the link between innovation and ecological sustainability. In addressing the research questions, an Eco-Sustainability Conceptual Framework was developed and applied to a sample of small to mid-sized enterprises. In addition, the development and use of an Eco-Scorecard helped to identify key performance indicators for measuring …

A Comparison Of Standard And Ventless American Lobster Trap Dynamics, Abigail S. Clark Jan 2012

A Comparison Of Standard And Ventless American Lobster Trap Dynamics, Abigail S. Clark

Master's Theses and Capstones

The American lobster, Homarus americanus, is the most valuable marine resource in New England and, as with any fishery, effective management depends on accurate stock assessment. The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of standard and ventless traps, focusing on determining which trap provides a better index of lobster abundance. While ventless traps caught approximately five times as many lobsters as standard traps, the size of captured lobsters did not differ significantly between trap types. Ventless traps saturated after 16 - 24 hours, but standard traps did not saturate at all. Despite saturating at all densities, ventless …

Activity Rhythms Expressed By Juvenile American Horseshoe Crabs, Limulus Polyphemus, Elizabeth Anne Dubofsky

Master's Theses and Capstones

The goals of this study were to determine if juvenile horseshoe crabs, Limulus polyphemus, express daily or tidal patterns of activity and how light and tidal cycles influence these patterns. When exposed to a light:dark cycle (n=24), 63% of juveniles exhibit daily patterns of locomotion and 25% of juveniles express circatidal patterns. When subsequently exposed to constant darkness, 17% express circadian rhythms of activity, 25% express a combination of circadian and circatidal patterns, and 46% express circatidal patterns of activity. When exposed to tidal cycles (n=42), 55% of juveniles express tidal patterns of activity, while the remainder exhibit either a …

Markers Of Health Status In Pasture-Fed Versus Total Mixed Ration-Fed Jersey Dairy Cattle, Megan Lee Seneca Jan 2012

Markers Of Health Status In Pasture-Fed Versus Total Mixed Ration-Fed Jersey Dairy Cattle, Megan Lee Seneca

Master's Theses and Capstones

Milk from pastured cows contains more beneficial fatty acids than milk from total mixed ration (TMR) fed cows. No studies have been done comparing health status in cows from each system. This study used pastured vs. TMR fed Jersey cows to measure levels of cortisol, haptoglobin (Hp), somatic cells, and production within and between farms over time.

Cortisol was significantly different between farms with means of 126.78 and 93.64 ng/ml for pastured and TMR groups, respectively. Levels in pastured cows trended with temperature and humidity. There was no significant difference in Hp levels between farms though levels did change over …

Watching Children: A History Of America's Race To Educate Kids And The Creation Of The 'Slow-Learner' Subject, Jeffrey C. Frenkiewich Jan 2012

Watching Children: A History Of America's Race To Educate Kids And The Creation Of The 'Slow-Learner' Subject, Jeffrey C. Frenkiewich

Doctoral Dissertations

On January 25, 2011, United States President Barack Obama delivered his State of the Union address to Congress and to the nation. As part of that address, President Obama articulated his vision for American education and stated that America had "to win the race to educate our kids" (Obama, 2011, state of the union). Mr. Obama's speech and his "Race to the Top" policy stand as statements in a discourse that expects fast-paced education based on universal standards and quantitative measures. Tracing a history of American schooling, one sees that this discourse has been dominant in this society for most …

Valuation Of Ecosystem Services: The Case Of Orseg National Park, Hungary, Ildiko Losonci Jan 2012

Valuation Of Ecosystem Services: The Case Of Orseg National Park, Hungary, Ildiko Losonci

Master's Theses and Capstones

A chronic lack of sufficient financial resources has prevented many protected area professionals from achieving adequate ecosystem protection. Using a case study of O&huml;rseg National Park in Hungary and the contingent valuation technique, we examined the relative importance of various ecosystem services to respondents, their WTP for these services, and the oath of honesty's effect on hypothetical bias.

Results from the intercept survey that was administered in the park in the summer of 2011 and filled out by 212 respondents show that visitors prefer the protection of the park's cultural monuments, and ecosystems services like local natural food, climate regulation …

Exploring The Parent-Coach And Child-Athlete Relationship In The Recreational Sport Context, Nicholas Pitas Jan 2012

Exploring The Parent-Coach And Child-Athlete Relationship In The Recreational Sport Context, Nicholas Pitas

Master's Theses and Capstones

Parent-coaches are individuals who coach their own children (child-athletes) in sports. Although their presence is widespread in the realm of recreational sports, little research has been conducted on the relationship between parent-coach and child-athlete. This is an exploratory study with the goal of better understanding the parent-coach phenomenon in the recreational sports context, from the perspective of both parent-coaches and child-athletes. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine parent-child dyads, focusing on positives, negatives, and the unique nature of the parent-coach and child-athlete relationship. Inductive analysis revealed a number of positive and negative themes, many of which were identified by both …

Real-Ationships An Educational Philosophy Advocating For An Increased Effort Towards Authentic Teacher-Student Relationships, K Britton Jan 2012

Real-Ationships An Educational Philosophy Advocating For An Increased Effort Towards Authentic Teacher-Student Relationships, K Britton

Master's Theses and Capstones

The impact an educator has on a student's life far exceeds the academic content being learned. The development of positive relationships between the teacher and student fosters the student's feelings of connectedness to their education. A strengthened connection leads to an increase in motivation, effort, and achievement. Unfortunately, positive teacher-student relationships are not the primary focus of today's educational systems. An educational philosophy advocating for real-ationships emphasizes the need for positive teacher-student relationships. The real-ationship's characteristics and implementation are described in detail, while real-life examples depict the positive experiences I have had as an educator within real-tionships. It is a …

A New Model Of Procedural Justice: Legal Legitimacy, Legal Cynicism, And Satisfaction With Government Officials, Lindsey R. Phelan Jan 2012

A New Model Of Procedural Justice: Legal Legitimacy, Legal Cynicism, And Satisfaction With Government Officials, Lindsey R. Phelan

Master's Theses and Capstones

The alternative model of legal socialization proposes that legal legitimacy and legal cynicism mediate the relation between procedural justice and rule-violating behavior (Triter, 2012). In contrast, the direct model of procedural justice proposes that procedural justice predicts satisfaction with government (Tyler, 1988). The current study tested these models using secondary analysis of data collected in Eastern and Western Europe during the 1990s. The present study tested two competing hypotheses: legitimacy and cynicism would mediate the relation between procedural justice and satisfaction with government officials (alternative model) and procedural justice would predict satisfaction (direct model). Results indicated that procedural justice predicted …

This study's aim was to determine the resources used by rural low-income mothers' working non-standard schedules to manage stress and keep their families from a chaotic state. The Double ABCX theory of family stress guided this study. Resources identified were strong mental well-being, parental confidence and skills and large social support network. Data were collected from 51 rural low-income mothers who worked non-standard schedules, by surveys and interviews three separate times. It was found that mothers who had the resources of strong mental well-beings, strong parental confidence and skills and large social support networks had lower stress levels when working …

Internet Use And Sense Of Community Among Rural Adolescents, Rebecca Benson Jan 2012

Internet Use And Sense Of Community Among Rural Adolescents, Rebecca Benson

Master's Theses and Capstones

There is currently a debate about the way Internet use affects community outcomes. Some suggest positive effects while others propose negative effects. The current study seeks to add to this discussion by using two waves of data to examine how frequency and type of Internet use affect sense of community in a sample of rural youth. Competing hypotheses are posed---Internet use will increase sense of community and Internet use will decrease sense of community. Using data from the Rural Youth Study, results indicate mixed effects of Internet use on sense of community dimensions, community attachment, support and emotional connection with …

Deweyan Tools For Inquiry And The Epistemological Context Of Critical Pedagogy, Peter J. Nelsen, Jayson O. Seaman Nov 2011

Deweyan Tools For Inquiry And The Epistemological Context Of Critical Pedagogy, Peter J. Nelsen, Jayson O. Seaman

Kinesiology

This article develops the notion of resistance as articulated in the literature of critical pedagogy as being both culturally sponsored and cognitively manifested. To do so, the authors draw upon John Dewey's conception of tools for inquiry. Dewey provides a way to conceptualize student resistance not as a form of willful disputation, but instead as a function of socialization into cultural models of thought that actively truncate inquiry. In other words, resistance can be construed as the cognitive and emotive dimensions of the ongoing failure of institutions to provide ideas that help individuals both recognize social problems and imagine possible …
