There was a time where UNH proudly had flags from A-Z, …

Deconstructing And Reconstructing Rights For Immigrant Children, Erin B. Corcoran Apr 2015

Deconstructing And Reconstructing Rights For Immigrant Children, Erin B. Corcoran

Law Faculty Scholarship

Children rights advocates and scholars alike continue to call for the development of innovative and alternative rights models, which specifically provide for an expansive conceptualization of children’s rights. Central to their calls for reform is a simultaneous recognition that children’s rights must embody agency – a child’s voice (a proxy for autonomy) – free from governmental interference, as well as the establishment of certain fundamental “needs” that place an affirmative obligation on the State to ensure the child has, and affirmatively provide, when necessary. Reimagining children’s rights also requires reforming our laws in such a way that reflects children as …

Taking A Deeper Look Into The Lives Of Disadvantaged Children Through Visual Content Analysis, Julianne Shimer Apr 2015

Taking A Deeper Look Into The Lives Of Disadvantaged Children Through Visual Content Analysis, Julianne Shimer

Inquiry Journal 2015

Asking children to draw a picture of family life is a simple and efficient way to assess their mental health.Children enjoy this activity and are more at ease as compared to filling out a questionnaire or having a formal interview. This past summer, I joined a research project in Ireland called the Healthy Schools Programme (HSP) that did just that. In total, 220 drawings of family life were collected from disadvantaged children aged eight to twelve years. The drawings gathered from this group were analyzed using a technique known as visual content analysis. This method involves examining drawings, pictures, or …

Post-Conflict Peacebuilding In Bosnia‐Herzegovina, Hannah Waller Apr 2015

Post-Conflict Peacebuilding In Bosnia‐Herzegovina, Hannah Waller

Inquiry Journal 2015

During the summer of 2014, I lived in Sanski Most, Bosnia-Herzegovina, with funding from an International Research and Opportunities Program (IROP) grant from the Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research. Through a series of semi-structured interviews and participant observation, my research highlighted the roles of truth, memory, and justice in rebuilding a post-conflict society in Bosnia-Herzegovina―essentially, on peacebuilding since the war ended in 1995. The Bosnian War stands as the worst genocide since the Holocaust, with 350,000 casualties and over 100,000 dead―80% of whom were Muslim Bosniaks, targets of an ethnic cleansing campaign by neighboring Serbia. Of the interviews I conducted, …

Intersecting Communities, Interwoven Identities: Questioning Boundaries, Testing Bridges, And Forging A Queer Latinidad In The U.S. Southwest, Holly R. Cashman Mar 2015

Intersecting Communities, Interwoven Identities: Questioning Boundaries, Testing Bridges, And Forging A Queer Latinidad In The U.S. Southwest, Holly R. Cashman

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

This contribution to the special issue on ‘Languages in Contact, Cultures in Conflict: English and Spanish in the USA’ aims to investigate the concept of queer latinidad in Phoenix, Arizona in an attempt to understand how queer Latin@s in Phoenix see themselves in relation to Latino communities, queer communities, and a queer Latino community. While questioning received notions of ‘community,’ we look at how queer latinidad is constructed or rejected by queer Latinas/os in Phoenix at the dawn of the twenty-first century precisely as national attention has been focused on the state of Arizona, and how this negotiation might blur …

The Educational Situation In Utopia: Why What Is, Is, Jayson O. Seaman, John Quay Mar 2015

The Educational Situation In Utopia: Why What Is, Is, Jayson O. Seaman, John Quay

Kinesiology

In this response to Molly Ware’s review of our 2013 book, John Dewey and Education Outdoors, we extend her suggestion that complexity be regarded as an important, generative force in education reform. Drawing on Dewey’s 1933 Utopian Schools speech, we discuss the “level deeper” that Dewey sought as he criticized the method/subject mater dichotomy, which he saw as an artifact of social class carried forward in the form of a curricular debate rather than a natural source of tension that would be productive to democratic education. Dewey radically argued that learning itself contained similar anti-democratic potential. Eschewing the false child …

Exploring The Epistemology Of Illicit Drugs, Holly Linseman Mar 2015

Exploring The Epistemology Of Illicit Drugs, Holly Linseman

Spectrum

In this essay I explore the epistemology of drugs in America. That is, how Americans come to know and define drugs and their users; and, in turn, how those definitions manifest in social institutions. I argue that at the present moment, the cultural environment surrounding the ways in which Americans define and experience drug use— whether it is deemed as acceptable usage or a threat—is determined by three main institutions. The first and most predominant is the criminal justice system, which operates according to a regime of “narcopolitics.”

Generative Roles: Assessing Sustained Involvement In Generativity, Sherry L. Hamby, Lindsey A. Thomas, Victoria L. Banyard, Ed De St. Aubin, John Grych Feb 2015

Generative Roles: Assessing Sustained Involvement In Generativity, Sherry L. Hamby, Lindsey A. Thomas, Victoria L. Banyard, Ed De St. Aubin, John Grych

Psychology

Abstract Generative roles refer to observable, behavioral community positions that embody aspects of teaching and nurturing that are central to the concept of generativity. Two studies are presented that describe generative roles in a community sample and provide psychometric data for a short index of generative roles. The first study also provides reliability and validity data from a second informant. The second study examines generative roles at different stages of adolescence and adulthood. Participants were asked 8 yes/no questions about a variety of community roles. The validity of the GRI was supported by significant correlations with the Loyola Generativity Scale, …

Beyond Collective Efficacy: New Brief Measures To Assess The Outer Layers Of The Social Ecology, Lindsey T. Roberts, Sherry L. Hamby, Victoria L. Banyard, John Grych

Psychology

Abstract

Introduction: Community support can be a valuable interpersonal resource anywhere, yet past research has largely been focused on adults in urban neighborhoods. Because communities are no longer solely defined by a shared physicality, we offer psychometric data on three new measures to assess other communal resources: informal community support, support for community youth, and workplace integration.

Methods: Participants (N=1706) from a largely rural, low-income Southern region completed a computer-assisted questionnaire as part of a larger study on character development and personal strength. Ages range from 11 to 70 years old (M=29.3 years; SD=12.3 years); 63% of participants are female. …

The Outcomes Of Family And Consumer Leadership Education: Creating Positive Change In Disability Policy And Practice, Mary Schuh, David Hagner, Ann E. Dillon, Beth Dixon Feb 2015

The Outcomes Of Family And Consumer Leadership Education: Creating Positive Change In Disability Policy And Practice, Mary Schuh, David Hagner, Ann E. Dillon, Beth Dixon

Institute on Disability

Background

When individuals with disabilities are trained in evidenced based practices and how to advocate for themselves and their families, they are best able to ensure that services and supports meet their needs and create and realize a positive vision for their future.

Participants and procedure

In New Hampshire in the United States a Leadership Series provided seven weekend training sessions to an annual cohort of about 25 family members and 10 adults with disabilities about better practices in service provision, defining a vision for the future, and community organizing and advocacy strategies, using informational sessions and participation in small …

Altered Intrinsic Functional Coupling Between Core Neurocognitive Networks In Parkinson's Disease, Deepti Putcha, Robert S. Ross, Alice Cronin-Golomb, Amy C. James, Chantal E. Stern Jan 2015

Altered Intrinsic Functional Coupling Between Core Neurocognitive Networks In Parkinson's Disease, Deepti Putcha, Robert S. Ross, Alice Cronin-Golomb, Amy C. James, Chantal E. Stern

Psychology

Parkinson3s disease (PD) is largely attributed to disruptions in the nigrostriatal dopamine system. These neurodegenerative changes may also have a more global effect on intrinsic brain organization at the cortical level. Functional brain connectivity between neurocognitive systems related to cognitive processing is critical for effective neural communication, and is disrupted across neurological disorders. Three core neurocognitive networks have been established as playing a critical role in the pathophysiology of many neurological disorders: the default-mode network (DMN), the salience network (SN), and the central executive network (CEN). In healthy adults, DMN–CEN interactions are anti-correlated while SN–CEN interactions are strongly positively correlated …

Getting The Message: The Adaptive Potential Of Interpersonal Judgments, John D. Mayer, Kimberly G. Phillips, Amy Barry Jan 2015

Getting The Message: The Adaptive Potential Of Interpersonal Judgments, John D. Mayer, Kimberly G. Phillips, Amy Barry

Psychology

According to the Social Message Model, interpersonal judgments are transactions in which judges convey important social messages to the individuals they evaluate (the targets); targets can then respond to the judgments in more or less adaptive ways. We argue that judges’ opinions emerge from their current concerns, be it to promote their own well-being, or to foster group cohesion. Targets of judgments can best interpret the meaning of a judgment they receive by understanding the judge’s concerns, competence of the judge, and other qualities of the transaction. We suggest that judges and targets who are better able to reason about …

The Impact Of Community Based Adventure Therapy On Stress And Coping Skills In Adults., Haley Koperski, Anita R. Tucker, D Marie Lung, Michael A. Gass Jan 2015

The Impact Of Community Based Adventure Therapy On Stress And Coping Skills In Adults., Haley Koperski, Anita R. Tucker, D Marie Lung, Michael A. Gass

Social Work

Stress and coping skills are among the most essential components of the mental health counseling field. The use of coping skills (e.g., meditation, physical activities, appropriate uses of leisure) has been identified as an effective strategy for stress management. Adventure therapy has emerged as a modality that can positively augment other therapeutic approaches by improving coping skills and assisting clients in managing stress. As with all therapies, a positive working alliance has been found to be important toward achieving clinical outcomes. This study explored how adventure therapy enhanced learned coping strategies for stress and improved therapeutic alliance. Outcomes from this …
