Generational Aspects Of U.S. Public Opinion On Renewable Energy And Climate Change, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Joel N. Hartter, Erin Bell Jan 2019

Generational Aspects Of U.S. Public Opinion On Renewable Energy And Climate Change, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Joel N. Hartter, Erin Bell

Sociology

The topics of climate change and renewable energy often are linked in policy discussions and scientific analysis, but public opinion on these topics exhibits both overlap and divergence. Although renewable energy has potentially broader acceptance than anthropogenic climate change, it can also sometimes face differently-based opposition. Analyses of U.S. and regional surveys, including time series of repeated surveys in New Hampshire (2010–2018) and northeast Oregon (2011–2018), explore the social bases of public views on both issues. Political divisions are prominent, although somewhat greater regarding climate change. Such divisions widen with education, an interaction effect documented in other studies as well. …

Mindfulness Meditation And Flow State Experiences: Unlocking Human Potential, Anthony Scialla Jan 2019

Mindfulness Meditation And Flow State Experiences: Unlocking Human Potential, Anthony Scialla

M. S. in Management

Mindfulness meditation (MM) and flow state experiences (FSE) share psychophysiological and behavioral parallels. Rarely presented are evidentiary resources on MM and FSE that explore the similarities and differences through research to fulfill gaps in knowledge. One study proposed that MM and FSE are inherently incompatible with each other and could not exist in concert. Coupled with the similarities found in the behavioral, psychological, and social aspects of MM and FSE was the need for immersion of participants in research that would test the relationship. The research conducted an interactive experiment where participants participated in a computer-driven reflex game. The participants …

Brands Take A Stand For Good: The Effect Of Brand Activism On Social Media Engagement, Alexis A. Gray

Honors Theses and Capstones

Brands are entering an era where brand activism and corporate social responsibility strategies are holding a large influence on consumer purchase decision making, rather than the traditional brand product marketing. A major distribution outlet for the rising brand activism strategy is through social media, where users can directly interact with brands and other users surrounding major issues. Higher engagement with such activism campaigns suggests more consumer support for the brand, leading to higher sales performance potential. This study examines the influence of brand activism campaign qualities on social media engagement, specifically on the Twitter platform. Tweets for 8 different brands …

How College Students Discuss Their Relationships, John R. Domenico Jan 2019

How College Students Discuss Their Relationships, John R. Domenico

Honors Theses and Capstones

It is a statistically significant fact that individuals who identify as homosexual are more likely to experience intimate partner violence (IPV.) Despite this, statistically, it is less likely for those who identify as homosexual to report IPV to healthcare clinicians or to law enforcement. “How College Students Discuss their Relationships” examines the implications of intimate partner violence in college students who identify as homosexual and the repercussions IPV may have on discussions with healthcare clinicians. By performing semi-structured interviews with individuals who identify as homosexual on the UNH campus, mental health outcomes of emotional intimate partner violence in …

Engaging Persons With Mental Illness And/Or Substance Use Disorder In Care Coordination Services: An Improvement Project At A Federally Qualified Community Health Center, Elizabeth A. Hale

DNP Scholarly Projects

Background: Mental health and substance use disorders seldom occur in isolation. They frequently accompany each other, as well as a substantial number of chronic general medical illnesses. Consequently, mental health conditions, substance-use disorders, and general health conditions are frequently co-occurring, and coordination of all of these types of health care is essential to improved health outcomes (Institute of Medicine, 2006). The U.S. system of healthcare is failing to identify, engage, and effectively treat people who are suffering from behavioral health conditions (Blanco, Coye, Knickman, Krishnan, Krystal, Pincus, Rauch, Simon, Vitiello, 2016). Because of poor coordination and lack of engagement, …

Utilizing Telecommunication To Provide Patient Centered Care For Adults Newly Diagnosed With Gi Cancer: A Quality Improvement Project, Laurie Miller

DNP Scholarly Projects

INTRODUCTION: A confirmed diagnosis of GI Cancer causes anxiety and stress as patients become overwhelmed with questions, worries and fears. At diagnosis, patients are not yet formally connected to the support services available to those actively receiving chemotherapy, creating a “gap period”. To help reduce anxiety, as well as, foster therapeutic relationships and improve overall patient experiences, a structured telephone communication by the gastrointestinal cancer oncology nurse practitioner (GI NP) was proposed.

AVAILABLE KNOWLEDGE: Reduction of anxiety has been shown to enhance the quality of life, increase compliance with a prescribed treatment plan and foster the ability to sign informed …

Evaluating The Role Of A Cav2.2 Splice Variant In Behavioral Responses To Stress, Novelty, And Other Monoamine-Linked Functions, Ashton Brennecke Jan 2019

Evaluating The Role Of A Cav2.2 Splice Variant In Behavioral Responses To Stress, Novelty, And Other Monoamine-Linked Functions, Ashton Brennecke

Master's Theses and Capstones

CaV2.2 (N-type) channel is a presynaptic channel that enables calcium influx into axon terminals, thereby playing a vital role in coupling action potentials to neurotransmitter release in the central and peripheral nervous systems. In vitro studies of CaV2.2 show that the channel directly modulates levels of the monoamines including dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. Further, CaV2.2-null mice exhibit heightened aggression and hyperlocomotion linked to aberrant dopamine and serotonin function. All these studies suggest that CaV2.2 plays a pivotal role in monoaminergic function. CaV2.2 contains an alternatively spliced exon, e18a, which is either included (+18a-CaV2.2) or removed (Δ18a-Ca¬V2.2) from the channel and …

Master's Theses and Capstones

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of meloxicam, administered either in pill form immediately prior to colostrum replacer (CR), or powder form, mixed in solution with CR, on the immunoglobulin G (IgG) uptake, growth, and health of pre-weaned calves. A pilot study considering the potential benefits of meloxicam in pre-weaned heifers indicated administration of the drug following difficult parturition improved body weight (BW) and overall health, but was not associated with passive transfer of immunity (Murray et al., 2015). However, calves from this study were sampled from 10 commercial farms, and therefore, treatment administration was inconsistent, …

Borsuk, Georgia Mavrommati, Nihar R. Samal, Shantar Zuidema, Wil Wollheim, Shannon Rogers, Alexandra M. Thorn, David Lutz, Madeleine Mineau, Curt Grimm, Kevin Gardner

Faculty Publications

We evaluate the relative desirability of alternative futures for the upper Merrimack River watershed in New Hampshire, USA based on the value of ecosystem services at the end of the 21st century as gauged by its present-day inhabitants. This evaluation is accomplished by integrating land-use and socioeconomic scenarios, downscaled climate projections, biogeophysical simulation models, and the results of a citizen-stakeholder deliberative multicriteria evaluation. We find that although there are some trade-offs between alternative plausible futures, for the most part, it can be expected that future inhabitants of the watershed will be most satisfied if land-use planning in the intervening years …

“TAKEN TO VT. STATE HOSPITAL”:

LOCALIZING THE HISTORY OF MENTAL HEALTH INSTITUTIONS,

A STUDY OF THE VERMONT STATE ASYLUM FOR THE INSANE, 1891-1912

By

Alecia Bassett

University of New Hampshire, December 2019

Often, the term “insane asylum,” invokes a macabre image of a crowded, outdated institution that does not so much care for its patients as secludes them from society. This popularized notion about care for the mentally ill in the many decades before contemporary medicine, is, as often times is the case, based in both fact and fiction. Institutional demands, such as overcrowding, forced many asylum administrators to …
