A Survey Of Opportunistic Fungi In The Portsmouth, Nh Region, Chloe E. Richard Jan 2021

A Survey Of Opportunistic Fungi In The Portsmouth, Nh Region, Chloe E. Richard

Honors Theses and Capstones

Opportunistic mycoses are caused by ubiquitous fungi that we encounter daily. This study identified the most common opportunistic fungi in a local area during the current winter season. A survey of fungi was conducted in the Portsmouth, New Hampshire region by taking environmental samples from both indoor and outdoor locations. The samples were then cultured and identified using colony morphology, microscopic characteristics, and biochemical testing. Despite the cold weather, the results showed that fungal species are still prevalent outdoors, with the most variation in single samples coming from areas with exposed soil and decaying vegetation, while less fungal presence was …

Providing Clean Energy Solutions To India’S Bottom Of The Pyramid Population, Jill Howard, Fiona Wilson, E. Hachemi Aliouche Dec 2020

Providing Clean Energy Solutions To India’S Bottom Of The Pyramid Population, Jill Howard, Fiona Wilson, E. Hachemi Aliouche

Carsey Publications

Despite a scheme launched by the Indian government in 2017 that has declared achieving close to 100 percent electrification in the country, studies have shown that only 65 percent of rural enterprises in India report having electricity grid connection. While millions of households have been positively impacted by access to electricity, small businesses and smallholder farmers (those with holdings of less than 2 acres) in rural India have been left out of the equation or receive very unreliable power supply. Byproducts of the energy poverty experienced by India’s Bottom of the Pyramid population include an enormous carbon footprint produced by …

In A Nutshell: Nutritional And Environmental Factors Impacting Small Mammal Seed Selection In Northeastern Forests, Nicholas Bryan Moore Dec 2020

In A Nutshell: Nutritional And Environmental Factors Impacting Small Mammal Seed Selection In Northeastern Forests, Nicholas Bryan Moore

Master's Theses and Capstones

Rodents often play vital roles in their ecosystems as seed predators and dispersers and can significantly influence the succession and assembly of plant communities. We conducted seed tray experiments to assess the nutritional and environmental factors that influence selection and foraging time of three common rodent granivores: the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus), the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), and the southern red-backed vole (Myodes gapperi) for three common seeds: American beech (Fagus grandifolia), red maple (Acer rubrum), and eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis). This work was conducted at Bartlett Experimental Forest located within White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. Using mixed-effects …

Examining The Overlooked Complexities Of School Lunch: An Investigation Into The Juncture Of Food, Schooling, And The Developing Adolescent, Eleanor Kane Dec 2020

Examining The Overlooked Complexities Of School Lunch: An Investigation Into The Juncture Of Food, Schooling, And The Developing Adolescent, Eleanor Kane

Doctoral Dissertations

School lunch is a universal experience for students everywhere and yet remains largely understudied by educational researchers. This dissertation explores school lunch through the lens of adolescent identity theory, with the purpose of investigating the unarticulated and overlooked complexities inherent in the lunch block, from issues of the developing sense of self, to social and cultural meanings surrounding food, and consequences for social reproduction. I used a combination of ethnographic observations and narrative interviews at a rural New England high school, focusing on participants’ daily habits, food practices, and choices during the lunch block. Through this, I established the normative …

Bacterial Genome And Population Dynamics With Implications For Public Health, Cooper John Park Dec 2020

Bacterial Genome And Population Dynamics With Implications For Public Health, Cooper John Park

Doctoral Dissertations

Bacterial populations are extraordinarily heterogeneous. Despite growing clonally, these populations are often composed of multiple lineages distinguished by both phenotypic and genetic differences that are caused by both allelic and whole gene variation. Such genomic mosaicism and within-species variation can significantly impact a species’ response to selective pressures from antibiotic use, vaccination, immune responses and host environment. One important process that contributes to this phenomenon is recombination, the exchange of very similar DNA sequences between strains which can result to either the addition or replacement of homologous genes. Current models of microbial recombination incorporate the null expectation that recombination is …

Nutrient Solution Effects On Plant Health And Microbial Community Composition In Soilless Strawberry Culture, William Miller Hardesty-Dyck Dec 2020

Nutrient Solution Effects On Plant Health And Microbial Community Composition In Soilless Strawberry Culture, William Miller Hardesty-Dyck

Master's Theses and Capstones

Holding advantages in efficiency and geographical flexibility, soilless Controlled Environmental Agriculture (CEA) systems have emerged as economically viable and ecologically sound alternatives to field agriculture, especially in high-value fruit and vegetable production. While commercial soilless operations typically use synthetic, mineral-based nutrient solutions for plant nutrition, there is interest in incorporating more ecologically sustainable naturally derived sources. Aquaponics - the linkage of aquaculture with soilless crop production - represents one such alternative. Aquacultural effluents can provide partial to complete plant nutrition following solids removal and nitrifying biofiltration, while the incorporation of solutes into crop biomass reduces the need to discharge culture …

Household Food Insecurity And U.S. Department Of Housing And Urban Development Federal Housing Assistance, Veronica Helms, Alisha Coleman-Jensen, Regina Gray, Debra L. Brucker

Institute on Disability

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides housing rental assistance to more than 4.5 million low-income households. Using health survey data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) linked to Federal housing administrative data, household food insecurity was assessed among adults receiving housing assistance at the time of their NHIS interview during 2011 and 2012 (n=2,089). Food-insecure households had difficulty at times providing adequate food for all their members due to limited resources. Among NHIS adult respondents receiving HUD assistance, 37.2 percent reported household food insecurity (including low and very low food security), while 19.1 percent experienced …

Analysis Of New Hampshire Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (Prams) To Better Understand Breastfeeding Initiation And Duration By Industry Category, Karla R. Armenti, David J. Laflamme

Institute on Disability

This supplemental report provides additional information on breastfeeding initiation and duration, and a woman’s job category (industry) as reported to the NH Division of Vital Records Administration via the NH birth certificate. De-identified responses in the NH birth certificate data linked to the responses in the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey data provided the opportunity to better understand duration of breastfeeding by a woman’s industry. The findings may be useful to policymakers and employers when framed in terms of the health and economic benefits of breastfeeding to inform workplace policy formation.

The Trophic Ecology Of Coral Reef Sponges In Caribbean Mesophotic Ecosystems, Keir John Macartney Sep 2020

The Trophic Ecology Of Coral Reef Sponges In Caribbean Mesophotic Ecosystems, Keir John Macartney

Doctoral Dissertations

Emergent sponges are crucial to the functional ecology of coral reef ecosystems, playing key roles in benthic-pelagic coupling, biogeochemical cycling of key nutrients, and provision of food and habitat to a variety of coral reef fauna. In mesophotic coral reef ecosystems (MCEs), sponges show a repeatable pattern of increasing abundance and diversity with increasing depth. Mesophotic coral reef ecosystems are typically found between 30 – 150 m and are characterized by depth-dependent gradients in photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and trophic resources such as increases in particulate organic matter (POM) and decreases in dissolved organic matter (DOM). Increased concentrations of POM …

Evaluating Recirculating Aquaculture System Nutrient Production, Alexander J. Sitek Sep 2020

Evaluating Recirculating Aquaculture System Nutrient Production, Alexander J. Sitek

Master's Theses and Capstones

While aquaculture production accounts for half of the world fish production, a growing problem emerges with the amount of effluent being produced. Waste treatment of aquaculture effluent is expensive and energy- intensive as conventional approaches to waste remediation have remained mostly unchanged. To improve the economic sustainability, the aquaculture industry needs to integrate with other production systems similarly as terrestrial animal agriculture has done with soil-based crop production. Integrating waste production in a wastes-to-resources approach as fertilizer for hydroponic cropping systems will allow aquaculture producers to monetize waste treatment. However, a full accounting of aquaculture nutrient production is necessary to …

The Effect Of Cold Pool Variability On Zooplankton Dynamics Of The Eastern Bering Sea Shelf, Jennifer Johnson Sep 2020

The Effect Of Cold Pool Variability On Zooplankton Dynamics Of The Eastern Bering Sea Shelf, Jennifer Johnson

Master's Theses and Capstones

Interannual variability of ocean temperatures and sea ice extent has been observed on the eastern Bering Sea (EBS) shelf, where annual conditions have resulted in regional “Cold” or “Warm” years. Consecutive years of Cold or Warm year characterization has resulted in regime states within the past two decades. A characteristic feature of the EBS is a subsurface layer linked to seasonal sea ice (SSI) and defined by bottom temperatures less than 2°C, termed the Cold Pool. Cold Pool variability is tied to the dynamics of fish distribution in the Arctic and subarctic ecotones. Water column, multifrequency acoustic backscatter data were …

The Development Of A Naturally-Derived Hydroponic Nutrient Solution From Recirculating Aquaculture System Effluent Using Microbial Digestion, Joseph Tetreault Sep 2020

The Development Of A Naturally-Derived Hydroponic Nutrient Solution From Recirculating Aquaculture System Effluent Using Microbial Digestion, Joseph Tetreault

Master's Theses and Capstones

The United States imports more seafood than any other country in the world. Supporting the development of a sustainable aquaculture industry will allow the United States to meet domestic seafood demand and compete in international markets. However, conventional aquaculture production methods such as pond and net pen systems are limited in capacity to meet the market demands for variety and local production. Instead, recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are a promising option for domestic aquaculture expansion. RAS is a controlled environment agriculture production model which is location-independent, offers significant water conservation, and optimizes environmental conditions to maximize fish production year round. …
