Marker Discovery To Support Genetic Improvement Of Kiwiberry, Reecha Acharya
Marker Discovery To Support Genetic Improvement Of Kiwiberry, Reecha Acharya
Master's Theses and Capstones
Kiwiberry (A. arguta (Siebold & Zucc.) Planch. Ex Miq.) is a functionally rich, grape-sized aromatic fruit crop that can tolerate cold temperatures up to -30 °C. It is a lesser-known species within the Actinidia genus that has the potential for commercialization especially in cold regions like New England owing to its smooth skin, and aromatic and intense tropical flavor. Kiwiberry is a vine crop that takes about 3-5 years to reach reproductive maturity, indicating a long breeding cycle. In addition, it is a dioecious crop that requires identification and maintenance of male and female vines in the vineyard. In this …

Management Of Aphids On Winter High Tunnel Crops, Samantha A. Willden, Allison Zablah, Anna Wallingford, Laura L. Ingwell

High tunnels offer several benefits to specialty crop growers including crop protection and season extension. Although crops are actively grown in high tunnels during the winter, few management recommendations exist for winter pests that are actively feeding and reproducing in this protected environment. This study evaluated the efficacy of three commercially available predators used for the augmentative biological control of aphids, Adalia bipunctata, Orius insidiosus, and Chrysoperla carnea, in combination with OMRI-approved pesticides labeled for aphids on spinach and strawberry. Pesticides included PyGanic (pyrethrin), Neemix (azadirachtin), and Sil-MATRIX (Potassium silicate). Laboratory and field experiments indicate high survival of biocontrol agents …

Factors Affecting Iodine Content Of Cow Milk-A Review, Mmh Khandakar, Ma Islam
Factors Affecting Iodine Content Of Cow Milk-A Review, Mmh Khandakar, Ma Islam
Faculty Publications
This review discusses the importance of iodine as an essential nutrient for human health and the factors that can influence the concentration of iodine in cow milk. For an adult, the daily recommended requirement of iodine is 150 µg/day and the maximum tolerable limit ranges from 600 to 1100 µg/day. Cow milk is a significant source of iodine in many countries, particularly in areas where iodine-rich foods are not readily available. Therefore, evaluating the variables that affect the iodine content of cow milk is important. The iodine concentration of cow milk can vary depending on several factors such as genetics, …

Assessing Beef Producers' Interest In Cooperative Business Models In New Hampshire, Maine, And Vermont, E M. Enzien, Peter S. Erickson, Analena B. Bruce, C W. Knight, Andrew B. Conroy
Faculty Publications
This study assessed the characteristics of northern New England producers and their willingness to participate in cooperative marketing (CM) or cooperative processing (CoP) of beef cattle. A survey was conducted with producers in the region. Pearson correlation coeffi- cients were used to evaluate whether producers were will- ing to participate in CM or CoP. Two multiple regression models were created using variance inflation procedures and backward elimination to predict whether producers were likely to participate in CM and CoP. A total of 174 surveys were returned and 161 were usable for analysis. Producers in- terested in CoP were likely also …

An estimated 6 million children under the age of five in Nigeria (out of nearly 31 million) risk not reaching their full developmental potential. The dearth of context-relevant measures poses a challenge to the planning and implementation of effective interventions. This study assesses the utility of the Early Childhood Development Index (ECDI) in Nigeria. We used the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys to track progress among 3- to 4-year-old children (n = 11,073); 3-year-old, 51%; female, 49%. Using random calibration samples, the results from psychometric tests indicate that while over half of the children were on track in their development based …

Assessing Forage Research And Education Needs Of Organic Dairy Farms In The United States, Eric Hatungimana, Heather M. Darby, Kathy J. Soder, Sara E. Ziegler, Andre F. Brito, Lisa Kissing Kucek, Heathcliffe Riday, E Charles Brummer
Faculty Publications
The viability of organic dairy operations in the United States (US) relies on forage production. The objectives of this study were to (1) assess producer and farm information regarding current forage production practices and producer knowledge gaps and (2) identify forage research and educational needs of organic dairy producers across the US. A survey was distributed to 643 organic dairy producers across the US, with 165 respondents (26% response rate). A focus group consisting of extension professionals, university researchers and staff, consultants, dairy industry representatives and organic dairy producers was also consulted for forage research needs. Results showed that approximately …

Micronutrient Fe And Mn Uptake From Peat By Marigold And Petunia, Amy E. Bestic-Pennings, Paul R. Fisher, Jinsheng Huang
Faculty Publications
Peat substrates have the potential to function as micronutrient sources such as iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn). Typically, when planning fertilization program for crops, the components of peat substrates are not taken into account. The objective was to quantify potentially plant-available micronutrients of Fe and Mn from peat substrates by floriculture species when no additional Fe and/or Mn were applied in the fertilizer solution. Greenhouse experiments were conducted using Tagetes erecta 'Atlantis Primrose' marigold (iron-efficient) and Petunia x hybrida 'Celebrity Pink Morn' petunia (iron-inefficient) to compare extractable Fe and Mn from two peat sources with actual plant uptake of these …

The Nitrogen Footprint Of Ukraine: Why Personal Consumption Matters, Sergiy Medinets, Allison M. Leach, Tetiana Pavlik, Volodymyr Medinets, James N. Galloway

Unintended reactive nitrogen (N) losses from agriculture, energy and transportation pose significant environmental hazards, including eutrophication, acidification, water and air pollution, biodiversity loss, human health risks and climate change. The concept of a nitrogen footprint (NF) emerges as a pivotal metric, reflecting potential N losses in the entire production-consumption chain of goods and services used by an individual within a defined timeframe. In a pioneering assessment of per capita NF in Ukraine, key factors, such as the food production chain, consumption patterns, connection to wastewater treatment (WWT) system and the efficacy of WWT facilities, were identified as critical components. Addressing specific …
