Variations In Carotenoids And Retinol In Milk And Cheese From Jersey Cows At An Organic Dairy Compared To A Conventional Dairy Over A Pasture Season, Amy Rose Beliveau Jan 2012

Variations In Carotenoids And Retinol In Milk And Cheese From Jersey Cows At An Organic Dairy Compared To A Conventional Dairy Over A Pasture Season, Amy Rose Beliveau

Master's Theses and Capstones

Carotenoids, widely distributed in nature, are considered to be potentially beneficial in the prevention of a variety of diseases including cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and eye diseases. As humans are unable to synthesize carotenoids, the diet is the only source of these beneficial components. Carotenoid concentration in cow's milk varies greatly as a result of feeding practice and season, but no research thus far has investigated these variations in Jersey cows over an entire pasture season. The objectives of this experiment were to 1) determine the differences in concentrations of carotenoids and retinol in milk from cows consuming different diets, …

Hemoglobin Type, Egg Buoyancy, And Antifreeze Glycoprotein Production As Mechanisms For Adaptive Variation In Gulf Of Maine Atlantic Cod (Gadus Morhua), Amanda R. Clapp Jan 2012

Hemoglobin Type, Egg Buoyancy, And Antifreeze Glycoprotein Production As Mechanisms For Adaptive Variation In Gulf Of Maine Atlantic Cod (Gadus Morhua), Amanda R. Clapp

Master's Theses and Capstones

Three physiological traits were examined to compare captive populations of winter- and spring-spawning cod from the Gulf of Maine, as differences in these traits have been observed in other locally-adapted subpopulations. Daily mean neutral buoyancy of hatchery-spawned eggs was observed at three temperatures (5, 10, and 12°C) and three photoperiods (15:9, 9:15, and 24:0 L: D) at 12°C. Body fluids of larvae held at 0°C for five days were tested for antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGPs) to determine the onset of AFGP production. Juveniles held at 0°C were bled between 20 and 35 days to determine induction time for AFGP production. Hemoglobin …

Effects Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Fungal Community Structure In A Temperate Hardwood Forest: Implicit Links Between Structure, Function And Resilience, Eric W. Morrison Jan 2012

Effects Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Fungal Community Structure In A Temperate Hardwood Forest: Implicit Links Between Structure, Function And Resilience, Eric W. Morrison

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study documents soil fungal communities at the Harvard Forest Chronic Nitrogen Addition experiment, which was established in 1989 to test the effects of long-term nitrogen fertilization on ecosystem processes. Researchers at this site have observed an accumulation of soil carbon in the nitrogen fertilized plots and a decrease in fungal biomass, ligninolytic enzyme activity, and rates of litter decay. We hypothesized that decreased decomposition rates in nitrogen-fertilized plots were due to changes in the structure of the fungal community, especially Basidiomycetes, the primary decomposers of lignin in this ecosystem. We performed a marker gene study of fungal communities in …

Had Feminists Only Thought Of Food: Men's And Women's Relationship With Food, 1963-1981, Laura Crean Jan 2012

Had Feminists Only Thought Of Food: Men's And Women's Relationship With Food, 1963-1981, Laura Crean

Master's Theses and Capstones

This thesis explores whether the women's movement changed how men and women interacted with food between 1963 and 1981. Through the examination of popular magazines Esquire and Mademoiselle , this thesis analyzes articles and advertisements to gauge where there was change. Men's relationship with food did not change. Men continuously cooked only as a hobby, recreating dishes they ate at fine-dining restaurants promoting themselves as connoisseurs. On the other hand, women experienced positive and negative changes as well as stagnation. Sexual liberation allowed women to embrace the sexual connotations of food for the first time in over a century. Yet, …

How Rural Low-Income Mothers Use Resources To Work Non-Standard Schedules, Laura E. Andrew Jan 2012

How Rural Low-Income Mothers Use Resources To Work Non-Standard Schedules, Laura E. Andrew

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study's aim was to determine the resources used by rural low-income mothers' working non-standard schedules to manage stress and keep their families from a chaotic state. The Double ABCX theory of family stress guided this study. Resources identified were strong mental well-being, parental confidence and skills and large social support network. Data were collected from 51 rural low-income mothers who worked non-standard schedules, by surveys and interviews three separate times. It was found that mothers who had the resources of strong mental well-beings, strong parental confidence and skills and large social support networks had lower stress levels when working …

Household Food Insecurity And U.S. Department Of Housing And Urban Development Federal Housing Assistance, Veronica E. Helms, Alisha Coleman-Jensen, Regina Gray, Debra L. Brucker

Institute on Disability

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides housing rental assistance to more than 4.5 million low-income households. Using health survey data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) linked to Federal housing administrative data, household food insecurity was assessed among adults receiving housing assistance at the time of their NHIS interview during 2011 and 2012 (n=2,089). Food-insecure households had difficulty at times providing adequate food for all their members due to limited resources. Among NHIS adult respondents receiving HUD assistance, 37.2 percent reported household food insecurity (including low and very low food security), while 19.1 percent experienced …

Molecular Diversity Of Fungal Phylotypes Co-Amplified Alongside Nematodes From Coastal And Deep-Sea Marine Environments, Punyasloke Bhadury, Holly Bik, John D. Lambshead, Melanie C. Austen, Gary R. Smerdon, Alex D. Rogers

Hubbard Center for Genome Studies (HCGS)

Nematodes and fungi are both ubiquitous in marine environments, yet few studies have investigated relationships between these two groups. Microbial species share many well-documented interactions with both free-living and parasitic nematode species, and limited data from previous studies have suggested ecological associations between fungi and nematodes in benthic marine habitats. This study aimed to further document the taxonomy and distribution of fungal taxa often co-amplified from nematode specimens. A total of 15 fungal 18S rRNA phylotypes were isolated from nematode specimens representing both deep-sea and shallow water habitats; all fungal isolates displayed high pairwise sequence identities with published data in …

Tanf In Rural America: Informing Re-Authorization, Leif Jensen, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Jessica A. Bean

Carsey Publications

In 1996 welfare reform ushered in a new era in which cash assistance for poor parents became both temporary and conditional on activities to promote economic independence through work. Cash assistance from TANF relieves, but does not eliminate, poverty because benefit levels are far too low to lift families above the poverty threshold. These ameliorative effects are weaker in rural than urban areas. Over time, the positive impacts of TANF receipt have continued to decline. The authors assert that the necessity of re-authorizing TANF gives us an opportunity to reflect on its strengths and limitations.

Wetlands provide many important services throughout the world, with an estimated economic value that, in comparison to other ecosystems, far exceeds their relatively small global extent. In recognition of their importance, both national and international regulations exist to protect the world's remaining wetlands. Of growing interest is the “no-net-loss” policy which permits unavoidable destruction of wetlands if compensated by restoration of degraded wetlands or creation of new wetlands. The fundamental assumption of no-net-loss is that wetlands can be created which function equivalently to natural wetlands. One integral function that wetlands perform is cycling of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. Here we …

Thermal adaptation of gross primary production and ecosystem respiration has been well documented over broad thermal gradients. However, no study has examined their interaction as a function of temperature, i.e. the thermal responses of net ecosystem exchange of carbon (NEE). In this study, we constructed temperature response curves of NEE against temperature using 380 site-years of eddy covariance data at 72 forest, grassland and shrubland ecosystems located at latitudes ranging from ~29° N to 64° N. The response curves were used to define two critical temperatures: transition temperature (Tb) at which ecosystem transfer from carbon source to sink and optimal …
