Explanations For The Decline In Child Sexual Abuse Cases., David Finkelhor, Lisa M. Jones
Crimes Against Children Research Center
Discusses the decline in the number of sexual abuse cases substantiated by child protective service agencies between 1992 and 2000. This OJJDP Crimes Against Children Bulletin explores the strengths and weaknesses of six possible explanations for the decline by using data from a number of different sources: aggregate data from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System; detailed child protective service data from Illinois, Minnesota, Oregon, and Pennsylvania; and self-report data from the National Crime Victimization Survey and from schoolchildren in Minnesota.

Replacing The ‘View From Nowhere’: A Pragmatist-Feminist Science Classroom., Sarah M. Stitzlein

ABSTRACT
Despite the importance of having an appropriate, coherent, and defensible philosophy of science, many science teachers have either given this part of their profession little thought or adhere to problematic and outdated philosophies. This article begins by tracing a brief history of the "view from nowhere" and its adoption by many teachers as the epistemological framework for teaching science. This conception of objectivity and its corresponding philosophy of science are shown to be problematically masculinist, disembodied, and aperspectival. As more Americans consume fast food each year, more Americans are contracting serious diseases related to obesity. Considering that obesity ranks second behind tobacco use as the largest contributor to mortality rates in the United States, and also that it gives rise to greater publicly funded health care expenses than does tobacco, this phenomenon begs the obvious question: To what extent does the growing consumption of fast food contribute to the obesity epidemic and the incidence of disease? If the answer indicates a meaningful contribution, a natural follow-up question then emerges: In a sensible legal system, what instruments would best …

This Article asserts that major conceptions about the appropriate structure, texture, and span of copyright protections and privileges have been fashioned by copyright treatises, particularly the various editions of Nimmer on Copyright. Copyright treatises function in concert with the machinations of Congress, the courts, and custom, but their role is not often scrutinized.
Because copyright treatises typically do a far better job than Congress or the courts of explicating copyright law in straightforward and accessible language, such treatises can not only communicate the copyright law, but also influence its development and direction. Algal Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids And Effects On Plankton Ecology And Other Organisms, Miyoshi Ikawa

A review and discussion of the effects of algal polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on phytoplankton and zooplankton ecology and their effects on other animal systems. Topics discussed also include the relationship of cyanobacterial classification to PUFA occurrence, lipid concentrations occurring in the aqueous environment, the general effect of microalgae on zooplankton, and how algal PUFAs may be exerting their inhibitory and toxic effects.
