Exploring Parents’ Ongoing Role In Romantic Development: Insights From Young Adults, Tyler B. Jamison, Hung Yuan Lo
Exploring Parents’ Ongoing Role In Romantic Development: Insights From Young Adults, Tyler B. Jamison, Hung Yuan Lo
Faculty Publications
Important decisions about romantic relationships are often made during adulthood, but the foundations for healthy relationships begin during childhood. Romantic development is related to experiences in the family of origin such as parenting, parents’ romantic history, and patterns of interaction within families. In order to better understand how this process unfolds into adulthood, we used relationship history interviews from 35 young adults (ages 24–40) to explore the mechanisms through which parents influence their children’s romantic development. We used Applied Thematic Analysis to guide our secondary analysis of relationship histories data. The findings suggest adult children internalize and apply the examples …

Concern Over Contracting Covid-19 Increases Slightly In Nh; Trust In Science Agencies Declines 9/8/2020, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
New Hampshire residents' concern about contracting COVID-19 has increased slightly since June. Trust in science agencies, like the CDC, as a source of information on the virus continues to erode. Granite Staters still express high levels of confidence in the state government’s ability to respond to the pandemic but are dubious of the federal government’s ability to do the same. Residents are slightly more comfortable participating in public activities than in July. Stark partisan differences endure over concerns about contracting COVID-19, trust in science agencies, and comfort with engaging in public activities.

Bipartisan Support For Absentee Voting Option In Nh; Belief In Widespread Voter Fraud In Nh Falls 9/8/2020, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
More than three-quarters of Granite Staters support New Hampshire voters being able to vote by absentee ballot due to concerns about COVID-19. Two-thirds of likely general election voters still intend to vote in person, but nearly half of Democrats plan to vote by absentee ballot. Most likely voters are confident their vote will be accurately counted and the belief that there is widespread voter fraud in the state has declined.
Is Rural America Failing Or Succeeding? Maybe Both, Kenneth M. Johnson, Daniel T. Lichter
Is Rural America Failing Or Succeeding? Maybe Both, Kenneth M. Johnson, Daniel T. Lichter
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Kenneth Johnson and Daniel Lichter summarize their peer reviewed article in Demography that provides cautionary lessons regarding the commonplace narrative of widespread rural decline and urban growth.
Johnson and Lichter report that since 1970, 25 percent of counties containing 22 percent of the current U.S. population have been reclassified from nonmetropolitan to metropolitan status because of population and economic growth. All of the growth in the share of the population that lives in metropolitan counties is due to nonmetropolitan counties transforming into metropolitan counties. This transfer of population and territory through reclassification calls into question the …

[Excerpt] "Entrepreneurship provides a path to prosperity for many people. In particular, women and minorities prefer entrepreneurship as their path to achieve the American Dream. In their striving, their startups and small businesses benefit our entire society. Entrepreneurial innovation has a positive impact on social welfare. For these reasons, the federal government has implemented numerous policies designed to support small businesses and promote startup innovation."
Securities Regulation And Social Media, Seth C. Oranburg
Securities Regulation And Social Media, Seth C. Oranburg
Law Faculty Scholarship
Federal securities regulation originally divided corporate finance into two neat categories, public and private. In 1933, private financing was limited to “sophisticated” investors but otherwise lightly regulated. Public financing became heavily regulated. In 1982, the SEC introduced Reg D, which introduced the concept of “general solicitation” to clarify the distinction between public and private offerings. Reg D is well understood to prohibit newspaper advertisements and permit direct solicitations to venture capital investors. This enabled great wealth consolidation in regions like Silicon Valley while effectively banning general solicitations in private offerings.
Now, social media communication challenges the definition of “general solicitation.” …
Enhancing Gravel Roughing Filter Performance With Zero Valent Iron And Anion Exchange Resin, Anthony Guidice
Enhancing Gravel Roughing Filter Performance With Zero Valent Iron And Anion Exchange Resin, Anthony Guidice
Master's Theses and Capstones
Gravel roughing filters (GRFs) are used as a way to buffer small systems that are sensitive to contaminant spikes within influent waters, however they tend to fall short in the removal of contaminants such as arsenic or organic precursors. A possible solution to this shortcoming is the addition of granular Zero Valent Iron (ZVI) or Ion Exchange Resin to the GRFs. ZVI is non-proprietary and non-deleterious to biofiltration systems. Ion exchange resins are proprietary however they are non-deleterious to biofiltration systems. ZVI or resin can be added as a portion of the media in a vertical upflow filter and as …
Impact Of Coagulation And Ozonation Pretreatment On Ceramic Microfiltration, Meghan Rita White
Impact Of Coagulation And Ozonation Pretreatment On Ceramic Microfiltration, Meghan Rita White
Master's Theses and Capstones
Globally drinking water sources are under pressure. In many places, there is unintended closure of the water cycle. This means that the wastewater treatment plant effluent with all its pollutants ends up in the source of drinking water treatment plants that are not designed to treat this type of water. Impacts on water sources from factors such as climate change and high population density make unintended reuse, indirect reuse, and potable reuse more accepted and explored. Known reuse schemes use high end treatment technologies such as ceramic microfiltration. While ceramic microfiltration is a beneficial treatment option, its effectiveness can be …

Dynamic Performance Of Partially Saturated And Unsaturated Soils, Sayedmasoud Mousavi
Dynamic Performance Of Partially Saturated And Unsaturated Soils, Sayedmasoud Mousavi
Doctoral Dissertations
The vast majority of surface structures are located on or surrounded by unsaturated and partially saturated soil deposits. Previous studies revealed that degree of saturation in soils can significantly impact the seismic performance of geotechnical systems. Yet, the fundamental understanding of the mechanisms by which the degree of saturation impacts their performance during seismic loading is not mature. This Ph.D. dissertation aimed to evaluate and characterize the dynamic response of soils including excess pore pressure generation, induced volumetric deformation, shear modulus, and material damping at different states of saturation and a wide range of degrees of saturation. Three different desaturation …
Improved Catalysis Via Pendant Amines In The Secondary Coordination Sphere, Zane Robert Thistleford
Improved Catalysis Via Pendant Amines In The Secondary Coordination Sphere, Zane Robert Thistleford
Doctoral Dissertations
The linked problems of renewable energy scarcity and global climate change have grown increasingly dire as the world’s population and standard of living increases, with insufficient societal action to address them effectively. Scientific and technological progress is expected to address the gap between the wants and needs of our civilization, and the available physical and political resources. A truly sustainable solution must use an abundant energy source – sunlight – to simultaneously remove carbon dioxide from our atmosphere and produce carbon-neutral fuel such as hydrogen gas. Photocatalysts can achieve this process directly, while electrocatalysts can use electricity which can be …

Internet-Of-Things (Iot) Security Threats: Attacks On Communication Interface, Mohammad Mezanur Monjur
Master's Theses and Capstones
Internet of Things (IoT) devices collect and process information from remote places and have significantly increased the productivity of distributed systems or individuals. Due to the limited budget on power consumption, IoT devices typically do not include security features such as advanced data encryption and device authentication. In general, the hardware components deployed in IoT devices are not from high end markets. As a result, the integrity and security assurance of most IoT devices are questionable. For example, adversary can implement a Hardware Trojan (HT) in the fabrication process for the IoT hardware devices to cause information leak or malfunctions. …
Evaluating Recirculating Aquaculture System Nutrient Production, Alexander J. Sitek
Evaluating Recirculating Aquaculture System Nutrient Production, Alexander J. Sitek
Master's Theses and Capstones
While aquaculture production accounts for half of the world fish production, a growing problem emerges with the amount of effluent being produced. Waste treatment of aquaculture effluent is expensive and energy- intensive as conventional approaches to waste remediation have remained mostly unchanged. To improve the economic sustainability, the aquaculture industry needs to integrate with other production systems similarly as terrestrial animal agriculture has done with soil-based crop production. Integrating waste production in a wastes-to-resources approach as fertilizer for hydroponic cropping systems will allow aquaculture producers to monetize waste treatment. However, a full accounting of aquaculture nutrient production is necessary to …

Good For Whom? The Framing Of Conflict In Post-9/11 America, 2001-2004, Joseph Antony Cook
Master's Theses and Capstones
This thesis explores the framing of conflict after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and more specifically, during President George W. Bush’s first term in office. Notions of American exceptionalism touched upon every facet of the nation’s response to the attacks, providing guidance, identity and resolve in the history of the Good War. The immediate tethering of Pearl Harbor and September 11 in the national discourse exemplified the foremost role that nostalgia would play in not only making sense of the attacks but devising a response to them. This thesis recovers what was lost to those destructive comforts in the …
Pesticide Treated Crop Seeds And Tillage Alter Seed Coat Fungal Communities On Amaranthus Retroflexus In A Maize-Soybean Cropping System, Samuel Arrington Palmer
Pesticide Treated Crop Seeds And Tillage Alter Seed Coat Fungal Communities On Amaranthus Retroflexus In A Maize-Soybean Cropping System, Samuel Arrington Palmer
Master's Theses and Capstones
Soil fungi, by damaging or decaying weed seeds in the soil seed bank, are important agents of biological weed control. Pesticide seed treatments (PST) that include fungicides may alter the communities of soil fungi that colonize weed seeds in the soil and therefore the nature and efficacy of this important source of biological weed control. Tillage, by disrupting fungal networks and spatially redistributing the fungicides associated with PST throughout the soil profile, may mediate the effects of PST on seed coat fungi. We conducted a two-year experiment at two sites with two levels of PST (treated and untreated crop seeds) …
Fuel From Within: Can Resuspended Organic Phosphorus Stimulate Harmful Cyanobacteria Blooms In Western Lake Erie?, John Martin Taylor
Fuel From Within: Can Resuspended Organic Phosphorus Stimulate Harmful Cyanobacteria Blooms In Western Lake Erie?, John Martin Taylor
Master's Theses and Capstones
Lake Erie, the shallowest of the Laurentian Great Lakes, has been historically plagued with summertime blooms of potentially toxic cyanobacteria (Microcystis spp.) that originate in the shallow western part of the lake (average depth 10 m). The onset of Microcystis blooms often follow wind-driven resuspension events, indicating that internal loading of growth limiting nutrients (mainly phosphorus, P) may stimulate cyanobacterial growth. We hypothesize that wind-driven sediment resuspension releases particulate P (PP) in the form of organic (POP) or inorganic phosphorus (PIP), fueling cyanobacterial growth in the water. To test this hypothesis, we exposed replicate sediment cores from two sites in …
The Development Of A Naturally-Derived Hydroponic Nutrient Solution From Recirculating Aquaculture System Effluent Using Microbial Digestion, Joseph Tetreault
The Development Of A Naturally-Derived Hydroponic Nutrient Solution From Recirculating Aquaculture System Effluent Using Microbial Digestion, Joseph Tetreault
Master's Theses and Capstones
The United States imports more seafood than any other country in the world. Supporting the development of a sustainable aquaculture industry will allow the United States to meet domestic seafood demand and compete in international markets. However, conventional aquaculture production methods such as pond and net pen systems are limited in capacity to meet the market demands for variety and local production. Instead, recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are a promising option for domestic aquaculture expansion. RAS is a controlled environment agriculture production model which is location-independent, offers significant water conservation, and optimizes environmental conditions to maximize fish production year round. …
Characterization Of A Variable Diameter Bioreactor (Vdb), Zhe Su
Characterization Of A Variable Diameter Bioreactor (Vdb), Zhe Su
Master's Theses and Capstones
Bioreactors for cell culture or fermentation are widely used for the production of proteins and other value-added products. Operation of bioreactors at large scale involves progressively increasing the culture volume in 4 to 10 folds increments to inoculate the culture and scale it up stepwise. To initiate the cell growth in a typical bioreactor of 20,000L, it often requires a train from benchtop scale at 1L to 10L, 100L, 1000L, 4000L and finally the 20,000L bioreactor. The transfer of cells from one bioreactor to the next one inevitably involves “lag phase” at the beginning of each culture, during which cells …
