Steep But Not Deep: A Critical Review Of Climate Change Effects On Nh Ski Areas And Their Consumer Population, Stephanie Menard
Honors Theses and Capstones
Climate change presents a significant challenge to the global tourism industry, particularly for sectors reliant on natural resources, such as the New Hampshire ski industry. This thesis investigates how ski resorts across the state are addressing the effects of climate change and adjusting to evolving consumer behavior to strategically position themselves for the future. The study’s research questions are focused on understanding the current tactics being employed by ski resorts and how consumer choices may be affected by climate change effects on the industry. To explore these questions, informational interviews with four industry professionals and a consumer survey were conducted. …

An Exploration Of Self-Identity In Transracial Adoptees From China, Aliya Dejun Sarris
Honors Theses and Capstones
Sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic, the author began to notice that the newest wave of Asian-American Pacific Islander (AAPI) activism was not inclusive of transracial adoptees, or people adopted by parent(s) of a different race. This study explores the unique identity of transracial adoptees specifically from China. The author explores the topics of identity, family, friends, community and overall belonging through the lens of primary and secondary sources. The primary sources include seven, hour-long interviews that the author conducted herself. Overall, the study concludes that transracial adoptees have a qualitatively different experiences than non-adopted peers that – although an incredibly …

Valuation Of Crypto Fintech Companies And Bitcoin, Clay Courtmanche
Honors Theses and Capstones
Companies like Coinbase, Robinhood, and MicroStrategy rely on Bitcoin as an integral part of their business model. My research speculates on reasons for the closely related price movement of Bitcoin and these three publicly traded financial technology firms. Bitcoin gradually has been integrating into our financial systems. This paper explores opportunities and threats to Bitcoin and crypto fintech firms, as well as their reaction to the current macroeconomic landscape. While Bitcoin faces major hurdles like volatility and media distrust, its’ persistence thus far has been driven by the disruptiveness of its’ underlying technology. As institutions begin to orient themselves towards …
The Impact Of Nutrient Depletion On The Effect Of Hhq On Emiliania Huxleyi, Marley Gonsalves
The Impact Of Nutrient Depletion On The Effect Of Hhq On Emiliania Huxleyi, Marley Gonsalves
Honors Theses and Capstones
Emiliania huxleyi is a ecologically important, bloom-forming coccolithophore. HHQ is a bacteria compound that causes cell stasis in E. huxleyi that can lead to bloom termination. This study analyzed the role that nutrient depletion plays in this relationship. Results show that nitrogen depletion protects cells from the effects of HHQ, affecting bloom dynamics.

The Clinical Observations Of Nursing Students And Recent Graduates Caring For Lgbtq+ People, Emily E. Roy
Honors Theses and Capstones
Objective: The next generation of nurses have increased educational preparation to provide affirming care to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, but an evaluation of the effectiveness of this teaching has not been performed. The purpose of this study was to identify nursing student and recent nursing graduate observations of affirming and non-affirming care of LGBTQ+ people in healthcare settings during clinical experiences. We also sought to understand how those experiences affect their ability and willingness to provide affirming health care to LGBTQ+ people.
Methods: Participants filled out a mixed methods Qualtrics survey that was distributed through school …
Assessing Parental Conversational Overlap In A Museum Setting And Its Correlation With Child Language Skills, Madison Gould
Assessing Parental Conversational Overlap In A Museum Setting And Its Correlation With Child Language Skills, Madison Gould
Honors Theses and Capstones
Research has identified the importance of quality interactions with parents, caregivers, and peers in the promotion of language acquisition. We question how certain aspects of parental language, primarily repetition, expansion, and extension, correlate with child language skills. There is limited research available regarding the impact of conversational overlap on a child’s language development at a singular time point, with most studies being longitudinal, especially when assessing conversations between children and their caregivers in different settings, such as a museum exhibit. Our findings suggest that children need less parental recasting as they age and as their language skills are bolstered.
Anti-Queer Policy As It Translates To Violence Against The Lgbt Community, Kendall Bush
Anti-Queer Policy As It Translates To Violence Against The Lgbt Community, Kendall Bush
Honors Theses and Capstones
In recent years, the amount of anti-LGBT policy introduced is rapidly increasing (ACLU, 2023). Contemporary policy focuses mainly on queer youth and gender identity, attacking gender-affirming health care and limiting LGBT discussions in public schools. Although these policies are particularly insidious, they follow a trend of queer persecution in the United States. Within federal policy and across state legislation, the panopticon of anti-LGBT policy ensures that queer bodies are policed and monitored. This paper posits that the increase in anti-queer policy translates to an increase in experiences of external and indirect violence. Based on findings from the UCR and various …

Cardiorespiratory And Metabolic Responses To Low-Intensity Blood-Flow Restricted Running, Violet E. Sullivan, Amanda P. Ares, Summer B. Cook Ph.D.
Honors Theses and Capstones
Low-intensity (LI) aerobic exercise with blood-flow restriction (BFR) increases heart rate (HR), oxygen consumption (VO2), and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), sometimes to similar levels as high-intensity (HI) exercise. Distance runners may benefit from LI-BFR running in periods of reduced volume or intensity, possibly due to injury. PURPOSE: To compare HR, VO2, blood lactate (BLa), and RPE during LI-BFR running and HI running without BFR. METHODS: Fifteen female distance runners (age 23+4yrs, height 1.67+0.50m, body mass 57.6+5.7kg, VO2max 51.0+4.5mL•kg-1•min-1) completed three randomized 12-minute running conditions: LI control (40% VO2 …
Studying Us Iranian Immigrant Parents Negotiating Movements Toward Future Belonging, Fatemeh Hajnaghizadeh
Studying Us Iranian Immigrant Parents Negotiating Movements Toward Future Belonging, Fatemeh Hajnaghizadeh
Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, I reflect on how my work with Iranian immigrant parents in the US is informed by my lived experiences and research as a member of the minoritized group both in post-revolutionary Iran and the US. I recognize these experiences as informing my research on diasporic parenting throughout different stages, from designing the methodology to curating the theoretical framework and analyzing data. The desire to engage with minoritized ways of being and knowing beyond static essentializing viewpoints informs my approach to designing methodological processes that centralize confusion/disagreements with dominant practices and ideologies. In my study’s methodology, I use stories …
Epigenetic Regulation During The Differentiation Of Embryonic Stem Cells Into Cardiomyocytes, Nan Yang
Epigenetic Regulation During The Differentiation Of Embryonic Stem Cells Into Cardiomyocytes, Nan Yang
Doctoral Dissertations
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, constituting a quarter of total deaths. A major reason behind the high mortality of heart disease is the low regenerative capacity of cardiomyocytes (CMs), which carry out the contractile function of the heart. Lineage- specific differentiation of pluripotent stem cells into CMs provides a promising therapeutic strategy. However, current methods suffer from challenges in generating mature and homogenous CMs in sufficient quantities for practical application. Moreover, little is known about the underlying epigenetic regulations in CM differentiation, which is essential during the establishment and maintenance of cell identity …
Implementation Of Virtual Reality For The Laboring Patient: A Quality Improvement Project, Chantal Cole
Implementation Of Virtual Reality For The Laboring Patient: A Quality Improvement Project, Chantal Cole
DNP Scholarly Projects
BACKGROUND: Having a baby can be one of the most challenging and painful experiences a woman has in their lifetime. Being able to choose between a variety of pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain-control methods is important to improve the patient experience and outcomes. This quality improvement project aimed to introduce a virtual reality device into the labor and delivery setting as a non-pharmacological pain control method. The goal was to decrease pain and anxiety levels, decrease the rate of epidural anesthesia use, and decrease the length of time epidural anesthesia medication was running before delivery.
METHODS: The four key components of …
Strengthening New Hampshire’S Primary Care Workforce Pipeline: Utilization Of Alternative Scheduling Models, Elizabeth Harrison
Strengthening New Hampshire’S Primary Care Workforce Pipeline: Utilization Of Alternative Scheduling Models, Elizabeth Harrison
DNP Scholarly Projects
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Traditional clinical scheduling coupled with the current reimbursement system have created systematic barriers leading to decreased clinical education opportunities. Alternative scheduling models such as longitudinal integrated clerkships, one preceptor to two students and wave scheduling have the potential to eliminate these barriers and provide financial gains and increased access to care.
INTERVENTION: Interventions to meet this quality improvement project's objectives included (1) pre-intervention planning (2) focus groups, (3) video presentations and (4) a pilot program of alternative scheduling models in clinical practice.
RESULTS: A pilot program utilizing the alternative scheduling models increased the relative value units (RVU) of …
