Ab Initio Molecular Orbital Investigations Of Molecular Structures For Lithiated Hydrocarbons, Shu-Jun Su
Ab Initio Molecular Orbital Investigations Of Molecular Structures For Lithiated Hydrocarbons, Shu-Jun Su
Doctoral Dissertations
Organolithium compounds are important reagents of widespread use in synthetic organic chemistry. Structures of organolithium hydrocarbons do not follow classical rules; replacement of a hydrogen by lithium in their molecules almost always results in a major change in geometry, electronic state, or both. The structures of many of these compounds still remain unknown and a subject of controversy.
This study investigated the geometries and electronic states of the ground states of dilithioacetylene and dilithiomethane molecules by using ab initio molecular orbital calculations. The geometries of both the molecules have been fully optimized at both the single determinant Hartree-Fock self consistent …
Effects Of Experimental Conditions On The Sorption Of Organic Compounds To Soils And Sediments, Kathy Booth Britton
Effects Of Experimental Conditions On The Sorption Of Organic Compounds To Soils And Sediments, Kathy Booth Britton
Doctoral Dissertations
Sorption is the basis for a number of techniques used to characterize solid particles. Because a number of techniques are based on sorptive interactions which are not fully understood, they are often plagued by experimental inconsistencies that are difficult to explain and frequently ignored. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine two techniques that are complicated by experimental inconsistencies--surface area measurements and the determination of distribution coefficients.
The apparent surface area of illite was measured by adsorption of a cationin fluorescent dye, Pyronin-y, from aqueous solutions in which pH and ionic strength were systematically varied. Estimates were highly dependent …
Invariant Operator Ranges Of Operator Algebras, D Benjamin Mathes
Invariant Operator Ranges Of Operator Algebras, D Benjamin Mathes
Doctoral Dissertations
Given a norm closed unital algebra ${\cal A}$ of operators on Hilbert space, a sublattice of Lat$\sb{1/2}{\cal A}$ is identified, which we denote Lat$\sb{\rm cb}{\cal A}$. It is proved that Lat$\sb{\rm cb}{\cal A}$ is lattice isomorphic to Lat$\sb{1/2}{\cal A}\otimes{\cal K}$ (where ${\cal K}$ denotes the ideal of compact operators on an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space). This isomorphism is used to prove theorems describing Lat$\sb{\rm cb}{\cal A}$ by carrying over know results concerning Lat$\sb{1/2}{\cal A}\otimes{\cal K}$. It is then shown that Lat$\sb{\rm cb}{\cal A}$ can always be written as the set of ranges of operators that intertwine the algebra with …

Twist-Bending Vibrations Of Horizontally Circular Curved Beams Considering Effects Of Transverse Shear, Rotatory Inertia And Warping, Bor-Tsung Hsiao
Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis is devoted to the dynamic analysis of horizontally circular curved beams. The direct stiffness method is used to derive the dynamic stiffness matrix for finding the natural frequencies and joint moments of curved beams having different rectangular cross-sections. Four examples are presented to illustrate the application of the proposed method and to show the effects of rotatory inertias, shear deformation, warping and opening angle of the arc on the beam. First three examples are for the free vibration of the beam. In these examples, beams with different thickness are used for finding effects of warping. In each example, …

Cenozoic Paleoceanography 1986: An Introduction, W. H. Berger, Larry A. Mayer
Cenozoic Paleoceanography 1986: An Introduction, W. H. Berger, Larry A. Mayer
Affiliate Scholarship
New developments in Cenozoic paleoceanography include the application of climate models and atmospheric general circulation models to questions of climate reconstruction, the refinement of conceptual models for interpretation of the carbon isotope record in terms of carbon mass balance, paleocirculation, paleoproductivity, and the regional mapping of paleoceanographic events by acoustic stratigraphy. Sea level change emerges as a master variable to which changes in the ocean environment must be traced in many cases, and tests of the onlap-offlap paradigm therefore are of crucial importance.

Gamma-Ray Observations Of The Crab Region Using A Coded-Aperture Telescope, Mark L. Mcconnell, P. P. Dunphy, D J. Forrest, E. L. Chupp, A Owens
Physics & Astronomy
The region of the Galactic anticenter, including the Crab Nebula, was observed during a balloon flight of the University of New Hampshire Directional Gamma-Ray Telescope employing the coded-aperture imaging technique to image celestial gamma-radiation between 160 keV and 9.3 MeV. The background systematics are treated with a simple and relatively straightforward correction procedure. The results demonstrate that the coded-aperture procedure is a viable approach for imaging not only point sources of radiation, but also extended sources of emission. The results for the Crab's photon spectrum are consistent with a power-law spectrum. Upper limits on the flux levels of line emission …
On-Line Sea Beam Acoustic Imaging, Christian De Moustier, F V. Pavlicek
On-Line Sea Beam Acoustic Imaging, Christian De Moustier, F V. Pavlicek
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
This paper describes a system designed and built at the Marine Physical Laboratory of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to produce acoustic images of the seafloor on-line with a Sea Beammultibeam echo-sounder. This system uses a stand alone interface between the Sea Beam system and a grey-scale line-scan recorder. The interface is built around a Motorola 68000 microprocessor and has digitizing capabilities. It digitizes the detected echo signals from each of the 16 preformed beams inside the Sea Beam echo processor as well as the roll information given by the ship's vertical reference. Theacoustic data are then roll compensated and …
Static Magnetic Field Models Consistent With Nearly Isotropic Plasma Pressure, Harlan E. Spence, Margaret G. Kivelson, Raymond J. Walker
Static Magnetic Field Models Consistent With Nearly Isotropic Plasma Pressure, Harlan E. Spence, Margaret G. Kivelson, Raymond J. Walker
Physics & Astronomy
Using the empirical magnetospheric magnetic field models of Tsyganenko and Usmanov (TU), we have determined the self-consistent plasma pressure gradients and anisotropies along the midnight meridian in the near-Earth magnetosphere. By “inverting” the magnetic field, we determine what distributions of an anisotropic plasma, confined within the specified magnetic field configuration, are consistent with the magnetohydrostatic equilibrium condition, J × B = ∇ · P. The TU model, parameterized for different levels of geomagnetic activity by the Kp index, provided the magnetic field values from which J × B was numerically evaluated. A best fit solution was found that minimized the …
Eelgrass Wasting Disease: Cause And Recurrence Of A Marine Epidemic, Frederick T. Short, Lisa K. Muehlstein, David Porter
Eelgrass Wasting Disease: Cause And Recurrence Of A Marine Epidemic, Frederick T. Short, Lisa K. Muehlstein, David Porter
Jackson Estuarine Laboratory
Eelgrass populations are currently infected with a disease that produces symptoms and epidemiology reminiscent of the famous eelgrass wasting disease of the 1930s. This disease virtually eliminated eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) in the North Atlantic for three decades. For 50 years scientists have speculated about the cause of the 1930s eelgrass decline. We have now proven that the causal organism of the present epidemic is a pathogenic strain of Labyrinthula, which was suspected, but never conclusively shown to cause the 1930s wasting disease. We have isolated the infectious form of Labyrinthula from eelgrass from Maine to North Carolina …
