Extended Γ‐Ray Emission In Solar Flares, G Rank, K Bennett, H Bloemen, H Debrunner, J Lockwood, Mark L. Mcconnell, James M. Ryan, V Schonfelder, R Suleiman Jan 1996

Extended Γ‐Ray Emission In Solar Flares, G Rank, K Bennett, H Bloemen, H Debrunner, J Lockwood, Mark L. Mcconnell, James M. Ryan, V Schonfelder, R Suleiman

Space Science Center

During the solar flare events on 11 and 15 June 1991, COMPTEL measured extended emission in the neutron capture line for about 5 hours after the impulsive phase. The time profiles can be described by a double exponential decay with decay constants on the order of 10 min for the fast and 200 min for the slow component. Within the statistical uncertainty both flares show the same long‐term behaviour. The spectrum during the extended phase is significantly harder than during the impulsive phase and pions are not produced in significant numbers before the beginning of the extended emission. Our results …

Space Science Center

We present results from the on-going spectral analysis of gamma-ray bursts measured by the COMPTEL instrument in its main Compton “Telescope” observing mode (0.75–30 MeV). Thus far, 18 bursts have been analyzed from three years (April 1991–April 1994) of observations. The time-averaged spectra of these events above 1 MeV are all consistent with a simple power law model with spectral index in the range 1.5–3.5. Exponential, thermal bremsstrahlung and thermal synchrotron models are statistically inconsistent with the burst sample, although they can adequately describe some of the individual burst spectra. We find good agreement between burst spectra measured simultaneously by …

Using Batse To Measure Gamma-Ray Burst Polarization, Mark L. Mcconnell, D J. Forrest, W T. Vestrand, M H. Finger

Space Science Center

We describe a technique for measuring the polarization of hard x-rays from γ-ray bursts based on the angular distribution of that portion of the flux which is scattered off the top of the Earth’s atmosphere. The scattering cross section depends not only on the scatter angle itself, but on the orientation of the scatter angle with respect to the incident polarization vector. Consequently, the distribution of the observed albedo flux will depend on the direction and the polarization properties (i.e., the level of polarization and polarization angle) of the source. Although the BATSE design (with its large field-of-view for each …

Looking For The Source Of ∼Hour-Long Soft X-Ray Emission Following Grb 780506, A Connors, Mark L. Mcconnell Jan 1996

Looking For The Source Of ∼Hour-Long Soft X-Ray Emission Following Grb 780506, A Connors, Mark L. Mcconnell

Space Science Center

GRB 780506, a gamma-ray burst discovered in HEAO 1 A-4 data, was unusual in three respects. First, it was well-measured (by HEAO 1 A-2) in 2–60 keV X-rays. Second, two minutes after it ended, HEAO 1 A-2 detected a faint resurgence of 2–10 keV flux, lasting roughly an hour. From recently calculated position constraints, it appears the source of the extended flux is consistent with the source of the burst, and probably not from a serendipitous transient along the Galactic plane. Third, it now appears GRB 780506 belongs to a newly discovered softer subclass of gamma-rays bursts. This subclass is …

Space Science Center

The superior burst location capability of the COMPTEL instrument aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory allows us to study the small-scale angular distribution of burst sources with good sensitivity even though the number of burst detections is small. We accumulate four years (April 1991–April 1995) of observations to form a catalog of 27 burst locations whose mean 1σ uncertainty is ∼1°. We find that the COMPTEL bursts are consistent with an isotropic distribution of sources, yet the spatial coincidence of two of the bursts within COMPTEL’s angular resolution indicates the possibility of repetition. This possibility is studied using the two-point angular …

Comptel Solar Flare Measurements, James M. Ryan, Mark L. Mcconnell

Space Science Center

We review some of the highlights of the COMPTEL measurements of solar flares. These include images of the Sun in γ rays and neutrons. One of the important features of the COMPTEL instrument is its capability to measure weak fluxes of γ rays and neutrons in the extended phase of flares. These data complement the spectra taken with the COMPTEL burst spectrometer and the telescope during the impulsive phase of flares. We focus our attention on some of these general capabilities of the instrument and the latest results of two long‐duration γ‐ray flares, i.e., 11 and 15 June 1991

Earth Sciences

The DC-8 mission of September 27, 1991, was designed to sample air flowing into Typhoon Mireille in the boundary layer, air in the upper tropospheric eye region, and air emerging from the typhoon and ahead of the system, also in the upper troposphere. The objective was to find how a typhoon redistributes trace constituents in the West Pacific region and whether any such redistribution is important on the global scale. The boundary layer air (300 m), in a region to the SE of the eye, contained low mixing ratios of the tracer species O3, CO, C2H6, C2H2, C3H8, C6H6and CS2 …

Snow And Ice Chemistry Study Of The Greenland Ice Sheet, Qinzhao Yang Jan 1996

Snow And Ice Chemistry Study Of The Greenland Ice Sheet, Qinzhao Yang

Doctoral Dissertations

The Greenland ice sheet preserves high resolution records of environmental and climate change spanning seasons to hundreds and thousands of years. In this study, we utilize major chemical species measurements of surface snowpit samples and ice cores collected at GISP2, 20D, Mount Logan, and Sentik Glacier to investigate major chemical species spatial distribution, temporal variations, and possible sources for the major chemical species in these ice cores.

A two-sided t-distribution test (a = 0.05) was applied for the study of major chemical species spatial distribution over a portion of central Greenland. The results suggest that concentrations of major chemical species …

Cross-Tail Current Carriers In A Two-Dimensional Equilibrium Magnetotail Model, Douglas Johnston Larson Jan 1996

Cross-Tail Current Carriers In A Two-Dimensional Equilibrium Magnetotail Model, Douglas Johnston Larson

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to gain physical insight into how charged particles, that violate the guiding center approximations, contribute to cross-tail current in a self-consistent plasma sheet. A technique to generate self-consistent two-dimensional (2D) current sheets is described. Groups of monoenergetic protons are followed in a model magnetic field. The sample current sheets are characterized by resonant quasiadiabatic and stochastic orbits. Several ion and electron groups are combined to produce a plasma sheet in which the charged particles carry the currents needed to generate the magnetic field in which the orbits are traced. An electric field also is …

Biped Dynamic Walking Using Reinforcement Learning, Hamid Benbrahim

Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis presents a study of biped dynamic walking using reinforcement learning. A hardware biped robot was built. It uses low gear ratio DC motors in order to provide free leg movements. The Self Scaling Reinforcement learning algorithm was developed in order to deal with the problem of reinforcement learning in continuous action domains. A new learning architecture was designed to solve complex control problems. It uses different modules that consist of simple controllers and small neural networks. The architecture allows for easy incorporation of modules that represent new knowledge, or new requirements for the desired task. Control experiments were …

Analysis And Design Of Ac Induction Motors With Squirrel Cage Rotors, Shine Ho Jan 1996

Analysis And Design Of Ac Induction Motors With Squirrel Cage Rotors, Shine Ho

Doctoral Dissertations

The traditional approach to modelling the AC induction motor revolves around the well-known equivalent "T" circuit model. In this approach, the direct connection from geometry to performance is suppressed. For better understanding of magnetic, electrical, and thermal behaviors, three lumped models based on the actual geometry are developed in this dissertation. Based on these lumped models, an iterative design model is also developed.

In order to analyze and design induction motors, the relationships of basic motor variables to motor performance must be known. For determining the relationships, three new mathematical lumped models are developed. The magnetic model describes flux behavior. …

Composition Operators On Riemann Surfaces, Ioana Crenguta Mihaila Jan 1996

Composition Operators On Riemann Surfaces, Ioana Crenguta Mihaila

Doctoral Dissertations

General background. Composition operators are defined on a Hilbert (or Banach) spaces of complex valued functions defined on some set X. For the big majority of cases the set X is the unit disc in the complex plane, and the space of functions is one of the Hardy or Bergman spaces (weighted or not). This is due, without doubt, to the richness of those spaces, and the high degree of interest in them. There have been also important papers on the study of the Hardy spaces on the unit ball of n-dimensional complex space.

I have been working with my …

Investigation Of Pd(A)(20)Pd(T)(20) In The Analytical Electrophoresis Apparatus, John Oliver Wooll Jan 1996

Investigation Of Pd(A)(20)Pd(T)(20) In The Analytical Electrophoresis Apparatus, John Oliver Wooll

Doctoral Dissertations

The analytical electrophoresis apparatus (AEA) is capable of generating and monitoring the electrophoretic migration of macroions. The oligonucleotide pd(A)$\sb{20}\cdot$pd(T)$\sb{20}$ was use as a model to compound to evaluate the range and validity of AEA measurements under a variety of electric fields and solvent conditions. A broad range of electric fields yield consistent, reproducible values. The charge determination from different procedures, steady state electrophoresis (SSE) and electrophoretic mobility, have not been consolidated into a consistent theory but advancements in the scope and understanding of the AEA's potential have been made. The apparent charge from the AEA measured electrophoretic mobility, $\mu$, of …

A Simple Model To Estimate Atmospheric Concentrations Of Aerosol Chemical Species Based On Snow Core Chemistry At Summit, Greenland, M H. Bergin, C Davidson, Jack E. Dibb, J L. Jaffrezo, H D. Kuhns, S N. Pandis

Earth Sciences

A simple model is presented to estimate atmospheric concentrations of chemical species that exist primarily as aerosols based on snow core/ice core chemistry at Summit, Greenland. The model considers the processes of snow, fog, and dry deposition. The deposition parameters for each of the processes are estimated for SO42− and Ca2+ and are based on experiments conducted during the 1993 and 1994 summer field seasons. The seasonal mean atmospheric concentrations are estimated based on the deposition parameters and snow cores obtained during the field seasons. The ratios of the estimated seasonal mean airborne concentration divided by the …

We report performance measurements of a sub-millimeter resolution CdZnTe strip detector developed as a prototype for astronomical instruments operating with good efficiency in the 30-300 keV photon energy range. The prototype is a 1.4 mm thick, 64×64 contact stripe CdZnTe array of 0.375 mm pitch in both dimensions. Pulse height spectra were recorded in orthogonal-stripe coincidence mode which demonstrate room-temperature energy resolution <10 keV (FWHM) for 122 keV photons with a peak-to-valley ratio >5:1. Good response is also demonstrated at higher energies using a coplanar grid readout configuration. Spatial resolution capabilities finer than the stripe pitch are demonstrated. We present the image of a 133Ba source viewed through a collimator …

Diel Variations Of H2o2 In Greenland: A Discussion Of The Cause And Effect Relationship, R Bales, Joe Mcconnell, Mark V. Losleben, Martha H. Conklin, Katrin Fuhrer, Albrecht Neftel, Jack E. Dibb, D W. Kahl, C Stearns Sep 1995

Diel Variations Of H2o2 In Greenland: A Discussion Of The Cause And Effect Relationship, R Bales, Joe Mcconnell, Mark V. Losleben, Martha H. Conklin, Katrin Fuhrer, Albrecht Neftel, Jack E. Dibb, D W. Kahl, C Stearns

Earth Sciences

Atmospheric hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) measurements at Summit, Greenland, in May–June, 1993 exhibited a diel variation, with afternoon highs typically 1–2 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) and nighttime lows about 0.5 ppbv lower. This variation closely followed that for temperature; specific humidity exhibited the same general trend. During a 17-day snowfall-free period, surface snow was accumulating H2O2, apparently from nighttime cocondensation of H2O and H2O2. Previous photochemical modeling (Neftel et al., 1995) suggests that daytime H2O2 should be about 1 ppbv, significantly lower …

From Comparative Risk To Decision Analysis: Ranking Solutions To Multiple-Value Environmental Problems, John Kadvany Sep 1995

From Comparative Risk To Decision Analysis: Ranking Solutions To Multiple-Value Environmental Problems, John Kadvany

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

While recognizing that the making of environmental policy is sufficiently complex that no one method can serve all conditions, Dr. Kadvany urges that more attention be given to multiattribute utility and decision analysis. He suggests this can help, e.g., to illuminate stakeholder values and generate alternative approaches.
