Volume is an important attribute used in many forest management decisions. Data from 83 fixed-area plots located in central New Brunswick, Canada, are used to examine how different measures of stand-level diameter and height influence volume prediction using a stand-level variant of Honer's (1967) volume equation. When density was included in the models (Volume=f(Diameter,Height,Density)) choice of diameter measure was more important than choice of height measure. When density was not included (Volume=f(Diameter,Height)), the opposite was true. For models with density included, moment-based estimators of stand diameter and height performed better than all other measures. For models without density, largest tree …

Contemporary infrastructure requires structural elements with enhanced mechanical strength and durability. Integrating nanomaterials into concrete is a promising solution to improve concrete strength and durability. However, the intricacies of such nanoscale cementitious composites are highly complex. Traditional regression models encounter limitations in capturing these intricate compositions to provide accurate and reliable estimations. This study focuses on developing robust prediction models for the compressive strength (CS) of graphene nanoparticle-reinforced cementitious composites (GrNCC) through machine learning (ML) algorithms. Three ML models, bagging regressor (BR), decision tree (DT), and AdaBoost regressor (AR), were employed to predict CS based on a comprehensive dataset of …

Calabi–Yau manifolds can be obtained as hypersurfaces in toric varieties built from reflexive polytopes. We generate reflexive polytopes in various dimensions using a genetic algorithm. As a proof of principle, we demonstrate that our algorithm reproduces the full set of reflexive polytopes in two and three dimensions, and in four dimensions with a small number of vertices and points. Motivated by this result, we construct five-dimensional reflexive polytopes with the lowest number of vertices and points. By calculating the normal form of the polytopes, we establish that many of these are not in existing datasets and therefore give rise to …

Lifespace Patterns Of College Students High And Low In Personal Intelligence, John D. Mayer
Lifespace Patterns Of College Students High And Low In Personal Intelligence, John D. Mayer
UNH Personality Lab
Personal intelligence (PI) refers to the capacity to accurately reason about personality in oneself and other people. We hypothesize that people who are higher in personal intelligence differ from others in their relationships and behaviors. We conducted a series of theoretically-guided studies to examine how PI is associated with a person’s self-reported activities, interactions, situations, and group memberships: their lifespace. In two archival and three new studies of college students (Ns = 385, 358, 1186, 416, 696, respectively) we first identified 15 short, factor-based scales describing aspects of college students’ lifespace that are potentially relevant to personal intelligence. …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
A coordinated multi-year ocean exploration campaign on the Blake Plateau offshore of the southeastern U.S. has mapped what appears to be the most expansive cold-water coral (CWC) mound province thus far discovered. Nearly continuous CWC mound features span an area up to 500 km long and 110 km wide, with a core area of high-density mounds up to 254 km long by 42 km wide. This study synthesized bathymetric data from 31 multibeam sonar mapping surveys and generated a standardized geomorphic classification of the region in order to delineate and quantify CWC mound habitats and compare mound morphologies among subregions …
Antitrust Law For Blockchain Technology, Seth C. Oranburg
Antitrust Law For Blockchain Technology, Seth C. Oranburg
Law Faculty Scholarship
Applying traditional antitrust law to the modern world wide web could break the internet. Lina Khan, the FTC’s current chair, is pushing for enhanced antitrust enforcement to break up Big Tech, seemingly based on the assumption that antitrust law is the right tool for ensuring a free and equitable internet. This assumption may be in error, and this Article seeks to explain why. Antitrust doctrine originally developed from a law enacted 130 years ago to deal with monopolist “robber barons” like Standard Oil. Since 1890, the structure of markets has changed. Today’s information markets through the internet are much different …

Observing And Estimating Soil Freeze Thaw Processes: From Remote Sensing To Land Surface Modeling, Mahsa Moradikhaneghahi
Observing And Estimating Soil Freeze Thaw Processes: From Remote Sensing To Land Surface Modeling, Mahsa Moradikhaneghahi
Doctoral Dissertations
Freezing conditions affect more than half of the exposed land in the Northern Hemisphere in cold seasons, where transitions between frozen and thawed states impact surface and subsurface water and energy budget. Recognized as an Essential Climate Variable (ECV), accurate, reliable and efficient estimates of soil freeze/thaw (FT) processes with a moderate spatiotemporal resolution are needed to fully resolve highly-dynamic processes taking place at the land-atmosphere interface. Active microwave remote sensing and land surface modeling are promising tools for advancing the monitoring of FT as an ECV. My dissertation addresses key scientific gaps in estimating soil FT conditions using active …

A Free-Boundary Successive Over-Relaxation Grad-Shafranov Equation Solver, Alec J. Damsell
Honors Theses and Capstones
Fusion has long been considered the “Holy Grail” of renewable energy, but has not yet seen viability as a commercial power source. With tokamaks like SPARC, NSTX-U, and ITER coming online over the next ten years, there is growing investment in fusion technology by both the public and private sector. If these tokamaks reach or exceed their scientific aims, further investment in fusion and new tokamak designs are expected. The first step in designing a tokamak is choosing a good plasma equilibrium, which is described by the Grad-Shafranov equation. This work presents a successive over-relaxation routine to solve the Grad-Shafranov …

Defensive Impact Wins: Developing A New Method To Rate Individual Defense In Nba Games, Dylan J. Stiles
Honors Theses and Capstones
With the analytics revolution in sports in the past 20 years, it seems that everything that can be quantified is. In basketball though, trying to break the game down into a set of numbers comes with a unique problem. While we've come up with a good set of advanced numbers to measure offensive efficiency, defense is fundamentally harder to quantify. The game is played five on five, but it has often been popular or convenient to model defense as a set of five one on one games. As defenses became more complex into the 2010s, this methodology became more insignificant. …
Investigation Of Charge Density Waves And Layer Stacking In Niobium Ditelluride, Gavin J. Smith
Investigation Of Charge Density Waves And Layer Stacking In Niobium Ditelluride, Gavin J. Smith
Honors Theses and Capstones
NbTe2 is a layered transition metal dichalcogenide which exhibits charge density waves (CDWs) and superconductivity in the bulk. Previous scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy experiments suggested that Fermi-surface nesting and reciprocal lattice reconstruction are important in the formation of CDWs in NbTe2. These experiments focused on spectroscopy of pristine regions. We will present low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments examining the 3x1 CDW in NbTe2 at 10K. We found a crystalline step and multiple neighboring 60º and 120º CDW domain boundaries. We examined the electronic structure across these domain boundaries and in neighboring domains using scanning …
Artificial Intelligence In Stock Analysis And Portfolio Building, Sean M. Lynch
Artificial Intelligence In Stock Analysis And Portfolio Building, Sean M. Lynch
Honors Theses and Capstones
The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) investment analysts, often referred to as “robo-advisors”, has the potential to change traditional portfolio management. These systems access vast amounts of data and make portfolio management decisions and stock market predictions. In this study, I compared AI-generated portfolios with portfolios that were created manually. Surprisingly, the human-generated portfolios outperformed the AI portfolios. However, the prompt used in the AI application affects these results. The subset of AI portfolios that were created with specific objectives specified in the prompts outperformed those that were created with more generic prompts. Overall, this research sheds light on the …
Understanding Large Accounting Firm Perceptions On The Decline Of Accounting Graduates And Implications Of Supply Shortages, Lilie Murray
Understanding Large Accounting Firm Perceptions On The Decline Of Accounting Graduates And Implications Of Supply Shortages, Lilie Murray
Honors Theses and Capstones
The accounting industry in the United States faces a persistent supply shortage, exacerbated by declining undergraduate interest. The Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA) has reported a decline in accounting bachelor’s and master’s degrees over the last five years, with the largest drop in 2021-2022 (AICPA 2023). Misconceptions about the profession, high barriers to entry, and generational values are factors in this decline. Mass retirements of Baby Boomers and exits of young-to-midcareer professionals put further strain on the shortage. This study aims to better understand the perceptions of accounting professionals at large accounting firms regarding the decline in accounting …
Supply And Consumption Of Dissolved Organic Phosphorus Across The Subtropical Indian Ocean, Corinne Richard
Supply And Consumption Of Dissolved Organic Phosphorus Across The Subtropical Indian Ocean, Corinne Richard
Honors Theses and Capstones
The Indian Ocean is an understudied region for marine phosphorus (P) biogeochemistry. Emerging evidence indicates marine phytoplankton can adapt to decreasing supplies of inorganic P, a required nutrient for growth, by alternatively utilizing organic forms of P. Here we investigate the dissolved organic phosphorus concentration ([DOP]) distribution across the southern Indian Ocean using observations collected on the I05 US GO-SHIP Cruise (2023) across ~33ºS latitude. We quantify the longitudinal variability of [DOP] in the upper 350 m of the Indian Ocean and infer its rate of biological consumption from surface waters, contributing as an organic nutrient to sustain marine autotrophs …
Giving Workers The 'Green Light': Defining Green Jobs And Exploring Their Distribution In The Us, Cole Fuller
Giving Workers The 'Green Light': Defining Green Jobs And Exploring Their Distribution In The Us, Cole Fuller
Honors Theses and Capstones
As the United States continues to adopt sustainable practices and policies to combat climate change, it is important to consider how these green changes affect the workforce. The term ‘Green Jobs’ has become the colloquial term to refer to sustainable occupations, and despite its popularity in the literature, it often has different meanings in different settings. Our first goal was to explore these definitions and establish one to contextualize our research. We used data from the Occupational Information Network, and used their green job definition, which classifies jobs as green if, and how, they are impacted by the greening economy. …

Judging Our New Judges: Why We Must Remove Artificial Intelligence From Our Courtrooms Now, Kieran Duffy Newcomb
Honors Theses and Capstones
In this paper, I explore some of the ways in which artificial intelligence might enhance the sentencing process through recidivism prediction technology. Notably, this technology can increase the accuracy of risk predictions and the speed with which sentencing decisions are reached. I then show, however, that the recidivism prediction technology is likely to turn into what data scientist Cathy O’Neil calls a Weapon of Math Destruction. The potential harmfulness of this technology is due not to the inherent nature of the technology, but the symbiotic relationship it will have with our already harmful criminal justice system. I argue that the …
How World’S Fairs Conceive Of The Future During Times Of Turmoil, Mikayla Lauren Tilden
How World’S Fairs Conceive Of The Future During Times Of Turmoil, Mikayla Lauren Tilden
Honors Theses and Capstones
During the 20th century, the theme of World's Fairs in the United States broke away from previous World Exposition traditions and centered around concepts of progress and the future. This thesis investigates the conception of the future and the evolution of the World's Fair themes during times of economic and political turmoil at the Chicago 1933–1934, New York 1939–1940, and Seattle 1962 World’s Fairs. In each instance, the fair’s organizers felt the need to respond to world events, which caused them to shift their initial focus from a local attempt to increase prosperity, to a national commentary on global conditions.

Imputation Strategies For Different Categories Of Missing Data, Karthik Chalumuri
Imputation Strategies For Different Categories Of Missing Data, Karthik Chalumuri
Honors Theses and Capstones
Addressing missing data in research is crucial for ensuring the reliability and validity of study findings, yet it remains a significant challenge. This study investigates the impact of missing data on research outcomes and explores the underutilization of existing tools for managing missingness, potentially leading to gaps in critical information with tangible implications for decision-making processes (Dziura et al.).
Focusing on the different categories of missing data—Missing Completely At Random (MCAR), Missing At Random (MAR), and Missing Not At Random (MNAR)—this research examines various imputation strategies tailored to each category. Specifically, we compare the efficacy of several model-based imputation methods, …

The Lighthouse Keepers Daughter: The Life And Work Of Celia Laighton Thaxter, Haley J. Parker
Honors Theses and Capstones
Living on the edge of the American empire, Celia Thaxter explored the dimensions of her life in ways that transcended, yet never fully abandoned traditional gender boundaries by cultivating her lifelong relationship with nature through creative expression. The lighthouse keeper's daughter constructed her identity based on the experiences that shaped her on the very edge of civilization. Coming of age on the Isles of Shoals, Celia reveled in flexibility and unrestricted freedom of her natural environment isolated from the cultural spheres on the mainland that reinforced the ideology of domestic femininity. This ideology was dominant in the 19th century in …

Voyager 1 and 2 data from the vicinity of the heliopause and very local interstellar medium are reexamined to better understand the confounding lack of rotation in the magnetic field (B-field) across the heliopause observed by both Voyagers, despite their very large spatial separations (>100 au). Using three estimates for the orientation of the B-field in the pristine interstellar medium and four models of the heliosphere, we calculate draped interstellar B-field orientations along the model heliopauses and compare those estimates to the Voyager observations. At both Voyagers, expected draped B-fields are inconsistent with the observed B-field orientations after the boundary …
