Artificial Intelligence Driven Magnetic Materials Discovery: From Data Extraction To Property Prediction, Yibo Zhang
Artificial Intelligence Driven Magnetic Materials Discovery: From Data Extraction To Property Prediction, Yibo Zhang
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation presents an integrated artificial intelligence framework aimed at accelerating magnetic materials discovery by addressing key challenges in materials science: improving experimental characterization techniques, efficiently extracting structured data from scientific literature, developing comprehensive materials databases, and creating reliable predictive models.
We first develop a UNet-enhanced vector field electron tomography (VFET) approach for three-dimensional magnetic structure reconstruction. This method addresses the missing wedge problem in experimental data collection while maintaining computational efficiency, providing reliable experimental data crucial for materials research.
We introduce GPTArticleExtractor, a novel workflow leveraging large language models to automatically extract key information from scientific literature. Applied to …
Improving Understanding Of Fluvial Reach-Scale Solute Transport And Uptake Using A Particle Tracking Model And Random Forest Machine Learning Model, Jiaying Liu
Doctoral Dissertations
In addition to transporting flowing water, river systems carry dissolved nutrients and pollutants, which can experience chemical reactions, biological uptake, or retention in surface or hyporheic zones. This dissertation enhances our understanding of solute transport and uptake in river reaches through three main components. The first component involves the development of a novel curve-fitting model designed to capture the characteristics of pulse-release breakthrough curves (BTCs) from tracer studies with conservative solutes. The model, which was found to be applicable to a wide range of field studies, enables the rapid comparison of transport parameters among diverse field studies obtained under a …
Deformation-Induced Bonding Of Glassy Polymeric Films And The Diluent Effect, Ajay Vallabh
Deformation-Induced Bonding Of Glassy Polymeric Films And The Diluent Effect, Ajay Vallabh
Doctoral Dissertations
Bonding between two polymer films can be achieved through various heat- or chemical-based methods. Recently, our group has discovered the novel phenomenon of deformation-induced bonding (DIB) for solid-state glassy polymers in time on the scale of a fraction of a second at ambient temperatures substantially below the bulk glass transition temperatures (T_g). DIB is achieved by bulk plastic compression, which triggers the molecular mobility of polymer chains to cause interpenetration across the interface even in a glassy regime.
First, we performed a series of experiments to evaluate solid-state, deformation-induced bonding in organic polymer blends composed of films of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose …
Characterization Of Sediment-Flow Interactions In Tidally Driven Salt Marsh Environments, Elijah Rousseau
Characterization Of Sediment-Flow Interactions In Tidally Driven Salt Marsh Environments, Elijah Rousseau
Master's Theses and Capstones
Salt marshes are effective sediment traps and under static sea levels are known to increase in elevation over time. However, current sedimentation rates are insufficiently high to keep up with the estimated sea level rise. Strategies such as the mud motor, which proposes the injection of dredged sediment into incoming flood tides, require a deeper understanding of how tidal flows evolve in complex estuarine systems and how suspended sediment is dispersed and deposited in vegetated environments. Two field deployments occurred in the summer of 2023 to study the mechanisms of sediment transport and accretion along a horizontal marsh transect in …
Feasibility Analysis On Bluff Body Wake Detection Via Cost-Effective Sensors And State And Parameter Estimation Techniques, Patrick Michael Close
Feasibility Analysis On Bluff Body Wake Detection Via Cost-Effective Sensors And State And Parameter Estimation Techniques, Patrick Michael Close
Master's Theses and Capstones
This thesis investigates the feasibility of using Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and existing state estimation techniques for detecting aerodynamic wakes around bluff bodies. Aerodynamic wakes are complex, turbulent flow regions created by obstacles. Accurately measuring these wakes is crucial for applications such as optimizing wind energy production, improving aircraft safety, and enhancing atmospheric research. Traditional measurement methods, such as ground-based sensors or piloted aircraft, have significant limitations, including restricted spatial coverage and high operational costs. UAVs, with their versatility and cost-effectiveness, present an alternative approach to measuring wakes in challenging environments.
This research focuses on three state estimation techniques: the …

Cold-climate urban areas often face severe air pollution events in wintertime because of residential heating and vehicle emissions into shallow surface inversion layers. Many state-of-the-art regional chemistry-transport models cannot capture the small spatio-temporal scale of the transport and chemical processes occurring in these environments. Here we introduce a new version of our one-dimensional atmospheric chemistry and transport model, PACT-1D that includes continuous exchange of atmospheric air with the interstitial air of a snow layer and a kinetic treatment of multi-phase chemical processes in air and snow. PACT-1D allows modeling and assessment of the interaction of transport, chemistry, and emissions on the …

The LOFAR radio telescope works on a principle of radio interferometric imaging. It coherently sums the signal of hundreds of antennas in northern Netherlands, covering the 30-80 MHz window of the very high frequency (VHF) band of 30-300 MHz. We are using the TRI-D algorithm to extract 3-D polarization data of a lightning flash observed by LOFAR. TRI-D functions by coherently summing recorded voltages, accounting for the antenna function, polarization, and geometric time delay for each voxel. The result is split into time slices. A coherent intensity is calculated for each time slice, and the maximum of this value is …

Where and under what conditions the transfer of energy between electromagnetic fields and particles takes place in the solar wind remains an open question. We investigate the conditions that promote the growth of kinetic instabilities predicted by linear theory to infer how turbulence and temperature-anisotropy-driven instabilities are interrelated. Using a large dataset from Solar Orbiter, we introduce the radial rate of strain, a novel measure computed from single-spacecraft data, which we interpret as a proxy for the double-adiabatic strain rate. The solar wind exhibits high absolute values of the radial rate of strain at locations with large temperature anisotropy. We …

We analyze the properties of relativistic (&gt700 keV) electron precipitation (REP) events measured by the low-Earth-orbit (LEO) POES/MetOp constellation of spacecraft from 2012 through 2023. Leveraging the different profiles of REP observed at LEO, we associate each event with its possible driver: waves or field line curvature scattering (FLCS). While waves typically precipitate electrons in a localized radial region within the outer radiation belt, FLCS drives energy-dependent precipitation at the edge of the belt. Wave-driven REP is detected at any MLT sector and L shell, with FLCS-driven REP occurring only over the nightside–a region where field line stretching is frequent. …

Quantifying transport by strongly stratified turbulence in low Prandtl number ( $Pr$ ) fluids is critically important for the development of better models for the structure and evolution of stellar and planetary interiors. Motivated by recent numerical simulations showing strongly anisotropic flows suggestive of a scale-separated dynamics, we perform a multiscale asymptotic analysis of the governing equations. We find that, in all cases, the resulting slow–fast systems take a quasilinear form. Our analysis also reveals the existence of several distinct dynamical regimes depending on the emergent buoyancy Reynolds and Péclet numbers, $Re_b = \alpha ^2 Re$ and $Pe_b = Pr …

This work attempts to define metrics for hydrodynamic exposure, using known oceanographic variables to provide a universal site assessment method for mariculture structures. Understanding environmental conditions driving open-ocean mariculture siting is crucial in establishing consistent ocean governance, minimizing adverse environmental impacts, and facilitating economically sustainable farm operations. To provide a metric of oceanic conditions and associated requirements for structural design and operation of aquaculture systems, six Exposure Indices (EI) are proposed that consider physical energy levels related to hydrodynamic forces at a site. Four of the proposed indices consider only environmental conditions, while the other two also consider the dimensions …

Finite Sum Of Integral Operators From The Fractional Cauchy Spaces To Bloch-Type And Zygmund-Type Spaces, Rita A. Hibschweiler, Ajay K. Sharma
Faculty Publications
The family of fractional Cauchy transforms, defined on the open unit disc in the complex plane, is of classical and modern interest. Membership of an analytic function in the family is determined by the requirement that the function can be expressed as an integral of a certain kernel against a complex Borel measure on the disc. Such an integral representation imposes a growth condition on the function and its derivatives. This exposes a connection between the families of Cauchy transforms and familiar spaces of analytic functions, such as the Bloch spaces and the Zygmund space. The notion of a composition …

Law school students are encouraged frequently to “network.” However, depending on demographic categories, they may have access to differently resourced social networks in law school. In this article, we draw from our mixed-methods research to explore this diversity of experience, its limitations of access, and the possible network inequalities that may limit the value of legal education to diverse students across different institutional contexts. Using survey and network data (N = 744), collected during the fall of 2019 from three law schools, as well as supplementary interview data (N = 55), we examined students’ social networks, the structures of these …

Standing acoustic waves have been known to generate Eulerian time-mean ‘streaming’ flows at least since the seminal investigation of Lord Rayleigh in the 1880s. Nevertheless, a recent body of numerical and experimental evidence has shown that inhomogeneities in the ambient density distribution lead to much faster flows than arise in classical Rayleigh streaming. The emergence of these unusually strong flows creates new opportunities to enhance heat transfer in systems in which convective cooling cannot otherwise be easily achieved. To assess this possibility, a theoretical study of acoustic streaming in an ideal gas confined in a rectangular channel with top and …

The pairing of Unpiloted Aerial Systems (UAS) and Structure from Motion (SfM) has provided new capabilities for modeling freshwater environments. Applications of UAS-SfM range from water quality monitoring to the mapping of aquatic vegetation. The models produced provide users with the ability to analyze features at ultra-high-resolutions and across scales not easily achieved through in situ sampling. Despite the demonstrated benefits of UAS-SfM in freshwater and other natural resource disciplines, there remain fundamental technical challenges in the modeling of environments with homogenous surfaces (e.g., water). In this research, the effectiveness of several image collection and processing approaches for the modelling …
