Physics & Astronomy

[1] At the start of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mission in 2009, its Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation instrument measured the radiation environment near the Moon during the recent deep solar minimum, when galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) were at the highest level observed during the space age. We present observations that show the combined effects of GCR primaries, secondary particles (“albedo”) created by the interaction of GCRs with the lunar surface, and the interactions of these particles in the shielding material overlying the silicon solid-state detectors of the Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation. We …

Underwater Radiated Noise Levels Of A Research Icebreaker In The Central Arctic Ocean, Ethan H. Roth, Val E. Schmidt, John A. Hildebrand, Sean M. Wiggins Apr 2013

Underwater Radiated Noise Levels Of A Research Icebreaker In The Central Arctic Ocean, Ethan H. Roth, Val E. Schmidt, John A. Hildebrand, Sean M. Wiggins

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy's underwater radiated noise signature was characterized in the central Arctic Ocean during different types of ice-breaking operations. Propulsion modes included transit in variable ice cover, breaking heavy ice with backing-and-ramming maneuvers, and dynamic positioning with the bow thruster in operation. Compared to open-water transit, Healy's noise signature increased approximately 10 dB between 20 Hz and 2 kHz when breaking ice. The highest noise levels resulted while the ship was engaged in backing-and-ramming maneuvers, owing to cavitation when operating the propellers astern or in opposing directions. In frequency bands centered near 10, 50, and 100 Hz, …

Recovery From Disturbance Requires Resynchronization Of Ecosystem Nutrient Cycles, Edward B. Rastetter, Ruth D. Yanai, R Quinn Thomas, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur, Timothy J. Fahey, Melany C. Fisk, Bonnie L. Kwiatkowski, Steven P. Hamburg

All Materials

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are tightly cycled in most terrestrial ecosystems, with plant uptake more than 10 times higher than the rate of supply from deposition and weathering. This near-total dependence on recycled nutrients and the stoichiometric constraints on resource use by plants and microbes mean that the two cycles have to be synchronized such that the ratio of N:P in plant uptake, litterfall, and net mineralization are nearly the same. Disturbance can disrupt this synchronization if there is a disproportionate loss of one nutrient relative to the other. We model the resynchronization of N and P cycles following …

Circle Talks As Situated Experiential Learning: Context, Identity, And Knowledgeability In 'Learning From Reflection', Jayson O. Seaman, Alison Rheingold Apr 2013

Circle Talks As Situated Experiential Learning: Context, Identity, And Knowledgeability In 'Learning From Reflection', Jayson O. Seaman, Alison Rheingold

Kinesiology

This article presents research that used ethnographic and sociolinguistic methods to study ways participants learn through reflection when carried out as a “circle talk.” The data indicate that participants in the event (a) invoked different contextual frames that (b) implicated them in various identity positions, which (c) affected how they could express their knowledge. These features worked together to generate socially shared meanings that enabled participants to jointly achieve conceptualization—the ideational role “reflection” is presumed to play in the experiential learning process. The analysis supports the claim that participants generate new knowledge in reflection, but challenges individualistic and cognitive assumptions …

A Statistical Analysis Of Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron (Emic) Waves And Their Correlation To The 11-Year Solar Cycle, Erik A. Lindgren

Honors Theses and Capstones

This thesis presents a statistical analysis of EMIC waves measured at Halley Research Station from 2008 through 2012. An introduction covering the origin of and theory behind EMIC waves is provided, along with a background covering previous statistical research regarding EMIC waves. Guidelines regarding EMIC wave definition and analysis are described along with examples of how they were used. The data shows an increase in the total number of EMIC waves as well as the number and percentage of EMIC waves with maximum frequency above 1 Hz during the 5-year period. The results suggest that the total number of EMIC …

Customer Age As A Predictor Of Contact Volume, Tollan Renner Apr 2013

Customer Age As A Predictor Of Contact Volume, Tollan Renner

Honors Theses and Capstones

A two stage modeling approach for modeling customer age as a predictor of contact volume was conducted using a real-world data set of approximately 2,000,000 contacts from a company call center. Two models were constructed in the first stage, one a straightforward regression and the other a series of regressions. One was selected as better performing and scaled up to predict calls received from calls answered. The second stage of the modeling included a day of the week covariate and performed the best of the models created. This model uses age bins as model effects, of which the youngest age …

Analysis Of Shear Lag In Steel Angle Connectors, Benjamin Sawyer

Honors Theses and Capstones

Previous research has found an empirically based method for calculating the effective net area defined by stress distributions created by tensile loads in steel connections. Based on the results from that method a theoretical alternative is explored to simplify the process of determining the effective net area.

Parallel And Distributed Performance Of A Depth Estimation Algorithm, Brian R. Calder Apr 2013

Parallel And Distributed Performance Of A Depth Estimation Algorithm, Brian R. Calder

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Expansion of dataset sizes and increasing complexity of processing algorithms have led to consideration of parallel and distributed implementations. The rationale for distributing the computational load may be to thin-provision computational resources, to accelerate data processing rate, or to efficiently reuse already available but otherwise idle computational resources. Whatever the rationale, an efficient solution of this type brings with it questions of data distribution, job partitioning, reliability, and robustness. This paper addresses the first two of these questions in the context of a local cluster-computing environment. Using the CHRT depth estimator, it considers active and passive data distribution and their …

African Americans have the highest prevalence of hypertension in the world which may emanate from their predisposition to heightened endothelial inflammation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a 6-month aerobic exercise training (AEXT) intervention on the inflammatory biomarkers interleukin-10 (IL-10), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and endothelial microparticle (EMP) CD62E+ and endothelial function assessed by flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in African Americans. A secondary purpose was to evaluate whether changes in IL-10, IL-6, or CD62E+ EMPs predicted the change in FMD following the 6-month AEXT intervention. A pre-post design was employed with baseline evaluation including office blood pressure, FMD, …

Experimental And Natural Warming Elevates Mercury Concentrations In Estuarine Fish, Jennifer A. Dijkstra, Kate L. Buckman, Darren Ward, David W. Evans, Michele Dionne, Celia Chen

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Marine food webs are the most important link between the global contaminant, methylmercury (MeHg), and human exposure through consumption of seafood. Warming temperatures may increase human exposure to MeHg, a potent neurotoxin, by increasing MeHg production as well as bioaccumulation and trophic transfer through marine food webs. Studies of the effects of temperature on MeHg bioaccumulation are rare and no study has specifically related temperature to MeHg fate by linking laboratory experiments with natural field manipulations in coastal ecosystems. We performed laboratory and field experiments on MeHg accumulation under varying temperature regimes using the killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus. Temperature treatments were …

Oceanographic Weather Maps: Using Oceanographic Models To Improve Seabed Mapping Planning And Acquisition, Jonathan Beaudoin, John G.W. Kelley, Jason Greenlaw, Tami Beduhn, Samuel F. Greenaway

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

In a world of high precision sensors, one of the few remaining challenges in multibeam echosounding is that of refraction based uncertainty. A poor understanding of oceanographic variability can lead to inadequate sampling of the water mass and the uncertainties that result from this can dominate the uncertainty budget of even state-of-the-art echosounding systems. Though dramatic improvements have been made in sensor accuracies over the past few decades, survey accuracy and efficiency is still potentially limited by a poor understanding of the “underwater weather”. Advances in the sophistication of numerical oceanographic forecast modeling, combined with ever increasing computing power, allow …

Sobol' Sensitivity Analysis Of The Holocene Peat Model: What Drives Carbon Accumulation In Peatlands?, Anne Quillet, Michelle Garneau, Steve Frolking

Earth Sciences

Understanding the development of northern peatlands and their carbon accumulation dynamics is crucial in order to confidently integrate northern peatlands into global carbon cycle models. To achieve this, northern peatland models are becoming increasingly complex and now include feedback processes between peat depth, decomposition, hydrology, and vegetation composition and productivity. Here we present results from a global sensitivity analysis performed to assess the behavior and parameter interaction of a peatland simulation model. A series of simulations of the Holocene Peat Model were performed with different parameter combinations in order to assess the role of parameter interactions on the simulated total …

Future Directions In Hydrography Using Satellite-Derived Bathymetry, Shachak Pe'eri, Christopher Parrish, Lee Alexander, Chukwuma Azuike, Andy Armstrong, Maryellen Sault

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Satellite remote sensing provides useful reconnaissance tool for mapping near-shore bathymetry, characterizing a coastal area and monitoring any seafloor changes that may have occurred since the last hydrographic survey of the area. At the 2012 Canada Hydro conference, a study was presented on the potential use of Landsat satellite imagery to map shallow-water bathymetry in a GIS environment over three study sites. Since then, several collaborations between the current study group and various hydrographic organizations were established with the goal of implementing optically-derived bathymetry as part of their data acquiring procedure. Bathymetry over additional study sites around the world was …

Water-Column Variability Assessment For Underway Profilers To Improve Efficiency And Accuracy Of Multibeam Surveys, Matt Wilson, Jonathan Beaudoin, Steve Smyth Mar 2013

Water-Column Variability Assessment For Underway Profilers To Improve Efficiency And Accuracy Of Multibeam Surveys, Matt Wilson, Jonathan Beaudoin, Steve Smyth

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

With the advent of underway profilers, sampling the water-column to obtain sound speed corrections is no longer a detriment to hydrographic survey efficiency. Instead, the challenge has become deciding how many casts are necessary to maintain a desired level of multibeam sounding accuracy, while not needlessly overworking the profiler. Ray tracing uncertainty analysis can determine in hindsight whether a particular sampling interval is adequate or not. Based on this methodology, an algorithm was developed to generate recommended sampling intervals based on successively acquired sound speed profiles, allowing the MVP to run in a “cruise-control” mode where the sampling interval is …

Distribution-Free, Variable Resolution Depth Estimation With Composite Uncertainty, Brian R. Calder Mar 2013

Distribution-Free, Variable Resolution Depth Estimation With Composite Uncertainty, Brian R. Calder

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Recent algorithms for processing hydrographic data have treated the problem of achievable resolution by constructing grids of fixed resolution, a composite grid of variable resolution, recursive sub-division in a quad-tree, or by relying on a comprehensive TIN of the original points. These algorithms all impose some artificial structure on the data to allow for efficient computation, however, which this paper attempts to address. A scheme is outlined which provides a robust estimate of depth and associated uncertainty that makes as few assumptions as possible. Using a non-uniform spectral analysis, it estimates the spatial scales at which the data are consistent …
