Phenomenology Of A Toy Model Inspired By The Spontaneous Reduction Of The Spectral Dimension In Quantum Gravity, Patrick A. Greene Jan 2015

Phenomenology Of A Toy Model Inspired By The Spontaneous Reduction Of The Spectral Dimension In Quantum Gravity, Patrick A. Greene

Honors Theses and Capstones

Attempts to formulate a quantum theory of gravity have generated many sophisticated models. Though fundamentally different, they necessarily exhibit behaviors resembling experimental observations and standard theoretical expectations. Often, their similarities go no further. However many models unexpectedly predict a change in the spectral dimension of spacetime at very small scales (See [1] and references therein for examples). In particular, some of the models predict the spectral dimension changes from 4 to 2. This paper investigates the phenomenological consequences of a toy model that use Planck-scale 2D hypersurfaces, specifically triangles, embedded in 4D Minkowski spacetime. We randomly generated sequences of triangles …

The Toric Approach To F-Theory Model Building, Herbie L. Smith Jan 2015

The Toric Approach To F-Theory Model Building, Herbie L. Smith

Honors Theses and Capstones

We describe the theoretical motivation for F-theory as a non-perturbative generalization of string theory. The four complex-dimensional compactification spaces of F-theory, called elliptically-fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds, consist of the six compact dimensions of string theory, plus a two-dimensional fiber that describes the string coupling field as a function of position on the string theory manifold. The methods of toric geometry are developed and applied to construct examples of elliptically-fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds. We analyze in detail models in which the fiber is free of singularities as a test bed for a more general analysis.

Fine-Scale Plant Species Identification In A Poor Fen And Integration Of Techniques And Instrumentation In A Classroom Setting, Dylan Schiff Jan 2015

Fine-Scale Plant Species Identification In A Poor Fen And Integration Of Techniques And Instrumentation In A Classroom Setting, Dylan Schiff

Honors Theses and Capstones

Refining carbon flux measurements in the carbon cycle is an ongoing challenge. This study attempted to identify plant species in Sallie’s Fen, a nutrient-poor fen in Barrington, New Hampshire, at a fine scale in order to better model and understand carbon exchange between plants and the atmosphere in this type of ecosystem. A protocol for estimating percent cover of species in plots via ground measurements was developed. The next stage of this project was to compare these measurements with measurements derived from spectral images using ImageJ computer software. Statistical tests of the ground measurement data revealed that patterns of seasonal …

Sampling Of Soils With Metallic Residues Collected From Military Small-Arms Ranges, Jay L. Clausen Jan 2015

Sampling Of Soils With Metallic Residues Collected From Military Small-Arms Ranges, Jay L. Clausen

Doctoral Dissertations

Small-arms, artillery, mortar, and pyrotechnic military training introduces solid metallic residues into the environment. Previous energetic residue research showed conventional judgmental soil sampling and associated sample preparation methodologies are inadequate to address the heterogeneous distribution and still yield representative and reproducible results for the area of interest. Metallic residue deposition at military small-arms ranges occurs in a heterogeneous distributional pattern, similar to solid particulate energetic residue deposition.

One of the primary objectives of an environmental investigation is to estimate the mean contaminant concentration to evaluate human and ecological risk in an exposure unit (i.e., an area where the receptors are …

Nonlinear Waves On A String With Inhomogeneous Properties, Robert Arredondo Jan 2015

Nonlinear Waves On A String With Inhomogeneous Properties, Robert Arredondo

Doctoral Dissertations

Nonlinear waves on an infinite string with a rapid change in properties at one location are treated. The string is an idealized version of more complex configurations in both fluids and solids. This idealized version treats the property change as an interface with a discontinuity in properties. Packets of waves are then considered with a reduced model, here a set of nonlinear Schr¨odinger (NLS) equations. The stress and the displacement must both be matched at the interface, resulting in dynamic and kinematic interfacial conditions. The dynamic condition produces an inhomogeneous effect that cannot be treated successfully with separation-of-variables. This inhomogeneity …

A Woman's Work Is Never Done? Earlier Life Child, Marital, And Work History And Older Women's Relationship To The Paid Labor Force, Anne Shattuck Jan 2015

A Woman's Work Is Never Done? Earlier Life Child, Marital, And Work History And Older Women's Relationship To The Paid Labor Force, Anne Shattuck

Doctoral Dissertations

In the past 40 years, women in the U.S. have experienced higher rates of labor force participation and higher rates of divorce and single motherhood. How these changes will affect women when they reach old age is not yet understood. Using a pooled sample from the Health and Retirement Study of 4,350 women born between 1931 and 1943, this dissertation assesses patterns of women’s work/retirement circumstances at age 66-68 and evaluates the relationship between those patterns and women’s earlier life marital, work, and childrearing history. Latent class analysis revealed four distinct classes of older women: the "retired well" (57.6% of …

Secondary Preservice, In-Service, And Student Teachers’ Noticing Of Mathematical Work And Thinking In Trigonometry, May Chaar Jan 2015

Secondary Preservice, In-Service, And Student Teachers’ Noticing Of Mathematical Work And Thinking In Trigonometry, May Chaar

Doctoral Dissertations

Recognizing and responding to students’ work and thinking are central to reform-minded mathematics teaching; in particular, recent educational reforms advocate for instruction that builds on students’ thinking, requiring teachers’ continual assessment of students’ verbal and written strategies. Despite its significance however, little is known about how secondary mathematics teachers analyze and respond to students’ work and thinking. This study aimed to help explain how teachers carry out this work. In particular, it sought to explain what types of knowledge and other resources enable or inhibit teachers’ in-depth analysis of students’ work and thinking while more generally describing the ways in …

A Supercell, Bloch Wave Method For Calculating Low-Energy Electron Reflectivity With Applications To Free-Standing Graphene And Molybdenum Disulfide, John Francis Mcclain Jan 2015

A Supercell, Bloch Wave Method For Calculating Low-Energy Electron Reflectivity With Applications To Free-Standing Graphene And Molybdenum Disulfide, John Francis Mcclain

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation reports on a novel theoretical and computational framework for calculating low-energy electron reflectivities from crystalline surfaces and its application to two layered systems of two-dimensional materials, graphene and molybdenum disulfide. The framework provides a simple and efficient approach through the matching of a small set of Fourier components of Bloch wave solutions to the Schrodinger Equation in a slab-in-supercell geometry to incoming and outgoing plane waves on both sides of the supercell. The implementation of this method is described in detail for the calculation of reflectivities in the lowest energy range, for which only specular reflection is allowed. …

Single Chain Technology: Toward The Controlled Synthesis Of Polymer Nanostructures, Christopher Kenneth Lyon Jan 2015

Single Chain Technology: Toward The Controlled Synthesis Of Polymer Nanostructures, Christopher Kenneth Lyon

Doctoral Dissertations

A technique for fabricating advanced polymer nanostructures enjoying recent popularity is the collapse or folding of single polymer chains in highly dilute solution mediated by intramolecular cross-linking. We term the resultant structures single-chain nanoparticles (SCNP). This technique has proven particularly valuable in the synthesis of nanomaterials on the order of 5 – 20 nm. Many different types of covalent and non-covalent chemistries have been used to this end.

This dissertation investigates the use of so-called single-chain technology to synthesize nanoparticles using modular techniques that allow for easy incorporation of functionality or special structural or characteristic features. Specifically, the synthesis of …

Porous Medium Convection At Large Rayleigh Number: Studies Of Coherent Structure, Transport, And Reduced Dynamics, Baole Wen Jan 2015

Porous Medium Convection At Large Rayleigh Number: Studies Of Coherent Structure, Transport, And Reduced Dynamics, Baole Wen

Doctoral Dissertations

Buoyancy-driven convection in fluid-saturated porous media is a key environmental and technological process, with applications ranging from carbon dioxide storage in terrestrial aquifers to the design of compact heat exchangers. Porous medium convection is also a paradigm for forced-dissipative infinite-dimensional dynamical systems, exhibiting spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics if not ``true" turbulence. The objective of this dissertation research is to quantitatively characterize the dynamics and heat transport in two-dimensional horizontal and inclined porous medium convection between isothermal plane parallel boundaries at asymptotically large values of the Rayleigh number $Ra$ by investigating the emergent, quasi-coherent flow. This investigation employs a complement of direct …

Molecular Dynamics Studies Of Nucleic Acids And Ribonucleoprotein Complexes, Tyler James Mulligan Jan 2015

Molecular Dynamics Studies Of Nucleic Acids And Ribonucleoprotein Complexes, Tyler James Mulligan

Master's Theses and Capstones

Molecular simulations of protein-nucleic acid complexes, as well as the HIV-1 Trans Activation Response Element (TAR) RNA molecule, were conducted. First, three different molecular dynamics techniques were studied on the molecule HIV-1 TAR RNA. The three techniques studied were classical molecular dynamics, steered molecular dynamics (SMD), and metadynamics. The classic molecular dynamics simulations were used to equilibrate the HIV-1 TAR RNA system, as well as every other system studied in this thesis. The SMD technique was used in order to observe the breaking force of the nucleotide interactions within TAR. This breaking force averaged to about 100pN. The metadynamics technique …

Ripple Migration And Boundary Layer Dynamics On A Natural Sand Bed, Emily Carlson Jan 2015

Ripple Migration And Boundary Layer Dynamics On A Natural Sand Bed, Emily Carlson

Master's Theses and Capstones

A laboratory study was conducted in a field scale flume to further examine the very near-bed dynamics in the near-shore environment using natural, non-cohesive sediments with d50 = 0.22 mm. A Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) system was used to capture the dynamics of the movable ripple bed and the 2D flow field in the vertical (z) and along-tank (x) direction in 1.6 m still water depth. Two wave types were analyzed: regular waves with periods ranging from 4 s to 8 s and bimodal wave pairs with periods of 3.7 and 4.3 s. Orbital ripples developed in all wave environments …

Critical Shear Stress Estimates Of Sunken Alberta Bitumen, Charles Bruno Richter Watkins Jan 2015

Critical Shear Stress Estimates Of Sunken Alberta Bitumen, Charles Bruno Richter Watkins

Master's Theses and Capstones

As observed in several recent spills (e.g., DBL-152, TX; Enbridge-Kalamazoo, MI), under certain circumstances, released oil can sink to the bottom of a water body. Once on the bottom, the oil can move or remobilize into the water column. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Office of Response and Restoration (ORR) uses mathematical models to predict the trajectory of spilled oil. The critical shear stress (CSS) for an oil is used to predict the movement of sunken oil along and off the bottom. The CSS has only been measured for one oil (Hibernian crude). The Coastal Response Research Center …

Mitigation Of Hardware Trojan Attacks On Networks-On-Chip, Jonathan Frey Jan 2015

Mitigation Of Hardware Trojan Attacks On Networks-On-Chip, Jonathan Frey

Master's Theses and Capstones

The Integrated Circuit (IC) design flow follows a global business model. A global business means that the processes in the IC design flow could be outsourced, and consequently security threats have been introduced. Security threats on hardware include side channel analysis, reverse engineering, information leakage, counterfeit chips, and hardware Trojans (HTs).This work mainly focuses on HT attacks, which execute a malicious operation on the system when a trigger condition is met. Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) are a popular communications infrastructure for many-core systems, which have proved to be a more scalable option over the traditional bus interface. However, the high scalability and …

Development Of A Biaxial Loading Frame For Thin Sheet Cruciform Specimens, Joseph Frederick Wilson Jan 2015

Development Of A Biaxial Loading Frame For Thin Sheet Cruciform Specimens, Joseph Frederick Wilson

Master's Theses and Capstones

Characterization of the evolving yield loci and forming limit diagrams for sheet materials under biaxial loading is necessary for the development of accurate sheet metal forming process simulations. Biaxial tension testing has been shown to have significant advantages over the current computational and experimental methods for such material characterization; however, the few commercially available loading frames are far too large and expensive to be practical for most metal forming research laboratories. To address this problem, the University of New Hampshire’s Mechanics, Materials, and Manufacturing Lab is working to design a practical servohydraulic biaxial loading frame for such metal forming laboratories. …

Establishment Of The Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle, Harmonia Axyridis, As A Model System For The Evolution Of Phenotypic Variation, Lindsay Havens

Master's Theses and Capstones

The mechanisms behind the evolution and maintenance of striking visual phenotypes are as varied as the species that display these phenotypes. Multiple study systems have been well characterized and provide critical information about the evolution of these traits. However, new study systems in which the phenotype of interest can be easily manipulated and quantified are essential to answer many questions about the functionality of core evolutionary processes. One such model is elytral spot number of the multicolored Asian lady beetle, Harmonia axyridis (Chapter 1). I describe Harmonia axyridis as a potential novel model species for examining extreme phenotypic evolution. To …

Arctic Ocean Bathymetry: A Necessary Geospatial Framework, Martin Jakobsson, Larry A. Mayer, Dave Monahan

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Most ocean science relies on a geospatial infrastructure that is built from bathymetry data collected from ships underway, archived, and converted into maps and digital grids. Bathymetry, the depth of the seafloor, besides having vital importance to geology and navigation, is a fundamental element in studies of deep water circulation, tides, tsunami forecasting, upwelling, fishing resources, wave action, sediment transport, environmental change, and slope stability, as well as in site selection for platforms, cables, and pipelines, waste disposal, and mineral extraction. Recent developments in multibeam sonar mapping have so dramatically increased the resolution with which the seafloor can be portrayed …

Euclidean Reconstruction Of Natural Underwater Scenes Using Optic Imagery Sequence, Han Hu

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The development of maritime applications require monitoring, studying and preserving of detailed and close observation on the underwater seafloor and objects. Stereo vision offers advanced technologies to build 3D models from 2D still overlapping images in a relatively inexpensive way. However, while image stereo matching is a necessary step in 3D reconstruction procedure, even the most robust dense matching techniques are not guaranteed to work for underwater images due to the challenging aquatic environment. In this thesis, in addition to a detailed introduction and research on the key components of building 3D models from optic images, a robust modified quasi-dense …

Abstract

Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves were observed at multiple observatory locations for several hours on 17 January 2013. During the wave activity period, a duskside relativistic electron precipitation (REP) event was observed by one of the Balloon Array for Radiation belt Relativistic Electron Losses (BARREL) balloons and was magnetically mapped close to Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) 13. We simulate the relativistic electron pitch angle diffusion caused by gyroresonant interactions with EMIC waves using wave and particle data measured by multiple instruments on board GOES 13 and the Van Allen Probes. We show that the count rate, the energy …
