Molecular Dynamics Studies Of Biomimetic Membranes, Daniel Ryan Barden Jan 2017

Molecular Dynamics Studies Of Biomimetic Membranes, Daniel Ryan Barden

Master's Theses and Capstones

We have explored the conformational dynamics of the peptide-appended pillar[5]arene (PAP) channel in lipid and block copolymer (BCP) membranes through the use of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The novel polymeric structures trans-1,4-polybutadiene (PB), trans-1,4-polyisoprene (PI), and poly-2-methyl-2-oxazoline (PMOXA) were created and parameterized. These structures were then used to build and simulate pure PB12PEO9, PB23 PEO16 , PI12 PEO9 , and PI23PEO16 synthetic BCP membranes. In addition, simulations of the PAP channel inserted into lipid (POPC), PB12 PEO9 , and PB23PEO16 membranes were conducted. Results of simulations containing PAP suggest that the membrane environment can affect the channel dynamics and potentially …

Chatter Simulation And Detection In Cnc Milling, Jonathan Steven Shepard Jan 2017

Chatter Simulation And Detection In Cnc Milling, Jonathan Steven Shepard

Master's Theses and Capstones

A key feature to maintaining a safe and efficient machining operation is the avoidance of unstable vibrations of the cutting tool, commonly called chatter. This thesis explores chatter simulation and a new chatter detection algorithm developed for use in a CNC milling machine. This algorithm, based on a once per revolution sampling method, samples forces experienced during the milling process, and calculates the variance of the differences between consecutive samples. As a selected level of variance, chatter is assumed. An existing milling simulation program is modified to produce a stability lobe diagram for a given CNC machine, workpiece material, and …

Evaluating The Use Of Unmanned Aerial Systems (Uas) For Collecting Thematic Mapping Accuracy Assessment Reference Data In New England Forest Communities, Benjamin Thomas Fraser

Master's Theses and Capstones

To overcome the main drivers of global environmental change, such as land use and land cover change, evolving technologies must be adopted to rapidly and accurately capture, process, analyze, and display a multitude of high resolution spatial variables. Remote sensing technologies continue to advance at an ever-increasing rate to meet end-user needs, now in the form of unmanned aerial systems (UAS or drones). UAS have bridged the gap left by satellite imagery, aerial photography, and even ground measurements in data collection potential for all matters of information. This new platform has already been deployed in many data collection scenarios, being …

The Effect Of High School Accounting On The Selection Of College Major, Performance, Satisfaction, And Retention, Gregory T. Marinaccio Jan 2017

The Effect Of High School Accounting On The Selection Of College Major, Performance, Satisfaction, And Retention, Gregory T. Marinaccio

Honors Theses and Capstones

The objective of this study is to examine the impact completion of a high school accounting course has on the selection of college major, academic performance in introductory accounting courses, satisfaction with one’s major, and retention. These relations are examined using data from a survey given to 208 students of various majors enrolled in the Paul College of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to analyze the data. The results provide evidence of a significant positive relation between high school accounting and two variables: selection of college major, and performance in …

Social-Pragmatic Communication In Women With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Multiple Case Study, Lacey W. Ryder Jan 2017

Social-Pragmatic Communication In Women With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Multiple Case Study, Lacey W. Ryder

Honors Theses and Capstones

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is identified much later and less often in females than in males. Some researchers suspect that a different set of characteristics of ASD in females may not be consistent with the more established and widely recognized characteristics of ASD, leading to under-identification in women. In the present study, four women and one non-binary feminine-presenting person with ASD were interviewed. The five participants conveyed their experiences with social-pragmatic communication, and their views on gender, ASD, and gender differences in ASD. The results are discussed in relationship to the limited amount of past research on women with ASD.

Micro-Sociological Implications Of Domestic Violence On Adolescents In A School Setting, Kerri Schulz Dec 2016

Micro-Sociological Implications Of Domestic Violence On Adolescents In A School Setting, Kerri Schulz

Perspectives

Adolescent victimization and exposure to domestic violence has the ability to yield negative psychological, social, behavioral, developmental, and cognitive outcomes. Unfortunately, violence within the home is becoming increasingly prevalent. In 2007 alone, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported that roughly 794,000 adolescents were either abused or neglected within their household (Sousa et al. 2011:112). Another form of violence that is becoming recognized as a widespread public-health concern is intimate partner violence. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, intimate partner violence is present when the juvenile is not directly involved and acts more as a witness to …

Direct Evidence For Microbial-Derived Soil Organic Matter Formation And Its Ecophysiological Controls, Cynthia M. Kallenbach, Serita D. Frey, A. Stuart Grandy Nov 2016

Direct Evidence For Microbial-Derived Soil Organic Matter Formation And Its Ecophysiological Controls, Cynthia M. Kallenbach, Serita D. Frey, A. Stuart Grandy

Faculty Publications

Soil organic matter (SOM) and the carbon and nutrients therein drive fundamental submicron- to global-scale biogeochemical processes and influence carbon-climate feedbacks. Consensus is emerging that microbial materials are an important constituent of stable SOM, and new conceptual and quantitative SOM models are rapidly incorporating this view. However, direct evidence demonstrating that microbial residues account for the chemistry, stability and abundance of SOM is still lacking. Further, emerging models emphasize the stabilization of microbial-derived SOM by abiotic mechanisms, while the effects of microbial physiology on microbial residue production remain unclear. Here we provide the first direct evidence that soil microbes produce …

Long-Term Warming Alters Carbohydrate Degradation Potential In Temperate Forest Soils, Grace Pold, Andrew F. Billings, Jeff L. Blanchard, Daniel B. Burkhardt, Serita D. Frey, Jerry M. Melillo, Julia Schnabel, Linda T. A. Van Diepen, Kristen M. Deangelis Nov 2016

Long-Term Warming Alters Carbohydrate Degradation Potential In Temperate Forest Soils, Grace Pold, Andrew F. Billings, Jeff L. Blanchard, Daniel B. Burkhardt, Serita D. Frey, Jerry M. Melillo, Julia Schnabel, Linda T. A. Van Diepen, Kristen M. Deangelis

Faculty Publications

As Earth's climate warms, soil carbon pools and the microbial communities that process them may change, altering the way in which carbon is recycled in soil. In this study, we used a combination of metagenomics and bacterial cultivation to evaluate the hypothesis that experimentally raising soil temperatures by 5°C for 5, 8, or 20 years increased the potential for temperate forest soil microbial communities to degrade carbohydrates. Warming decreased the proportion of carbohydrate-degrading genes in the organic horizon derived from eukaryotes and increased the fraction of genes in the mineral soil associated with Actinobacteria in all studies. Genes associated with …

Soil Microbial Biomass And Function Are Altered By 12 Years Of Crop Rotation, Marshall D. Mcdaniel, A. Stuart Grandy Nov 2016

Soil Microbial Biomass And Function Are Altered By 12 Years Of Crop Rotation, Marshall D. Mcdaniel, A. Stuart Grandy

Faculty Publications

Declines in plant diversity will likely reduce soil microbial biomass, alter microbial functions, and threaten the provisioning of soil ecosystem services. We examined whether increasing temporal plant biodiversity in agroecosystems (by rotating crops) can partially reverse these trends and enhance soil microbial biomass and function. We quantified seasonal patterns in soil microbial biomass, respiration rates, extracellular enzyme activity, and catabolic potential three times over one growing season in a 12-year crop rotation study at the W. K. Kellogg Biological Station LTER. Rotation treatments varied from one to five crops in a 3-year rotation cycle, but all soils were sampled under …

The Results Of Deliberation, Maggie Wittlin Nov 2016

The Results Of Deliberation, Maggie Wittlin

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

When evaluating whether to sue, prosecute, settle, or plead, trial lawyers must predict the future—they need to estimate how likely they are to win a given case in a given jurisdiction. Social scientists have used mock juror studies to produce a vast body of literature showing how different variables influence juror decision making. But few of these studies account for jury deliberation, so they present an impoverished picture of how these effects play out in trials and are of limited usefulness.

This Article helps lawyers better predict the future by presenting a novel computer model that extrapolates findings about jurors …
