Wetlands Evaluation For Philbrick's Pond Marsh Drainage Evaluation North Hampton, Nh, David M. Burdick, Chris Peter, Gregg Moore

Natural Resources & the Environment

Philbrick’s Pond is a lagoon type estuary that formed landward of barrier beach spits in North Hampton, NH. Its inlet was stabilized and restricted by the road that is now Route 1A or Ocean Boulevard. Water flow from the Gulf of Maine passes through a culvert running under Route 1A and into a small waterway and is further restricted as it runs through a clay pipe under an old trolley berm. The lagoon is characterized as a 29 acre tidal marsh. The goal of the overall project is to evaluate the condition and hydrology of the two restrictions recognizing the …

The Value Of The Dead: The Commodification Of Corpses In Western Culture, Charles Z. Wallace May 2018

The Value Of The Dead: The Commodification Of Corpses In Western Culture, Charles Z. Wallace

Spectrum

Since the 19th century, the deceased human body and its parts have been increasingly dehumanized, objectified, and commodified in Western culture. Thus, in a relatively short period of time, the corpse became, and continues to be, a highly valuable source of both economic and cultural capital for scientific and medical researchers, numerous industries, and much of society.

Communicative Participation Improves Following Motor Speech Program Treatment In Apraxia Of Speech, Emily A. Schultz May 2018

Communicative Participation Improves Following Motor Speech Program Treatment In Apraxia Of Speech, Emily A. Schultz

Master's Theses and Capstones

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder characterized by increase in segment and intersegment durations (segmentation), equal stress over words and/or sentences, dysprosody, and speech sound distortions. With decreased intelligibility, limited or lack communicative participation arises from an inability to be understood or lack of confidence in their speech. Establishing communicative participation measurements is integral to generalizing and establishing efficacy of treatment program progress to a child’s everyday life. This study observes the communicative participation change of a group of children (n=6) with idiopathic CAS, receiving a new four-week, 16-hour treatment called Treatment for Establishing Motor Programming …

Understanding College Men's And Women's Perceptions Of Sexual Behavior Responsibility Through The Lens Of The Human Papillomavirus, Angela Mitiguy May 2018

Understanding College Men's And Women's Perceptions Of Sexual Behavior Responsibility Through The Lens Of The Human Papillomavirus, Angela Mitiguy

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is an examination of gender differences in sexual behavior responsibility and safe sex decision making, particularly among a college age population. In this study, I address one main research question: How do college-going men and women perceive their own and their partner’s responsibility for sexual behavior and sexual health? More specifically, I use the case of the Human Papillomavirus as a way to examine if there are gendered differences in the way college men and women think about their sexual behavior and sexual health and if these differences exist in the ways men and women act in certain …

Working Alliances: The Implications Of Person-Centered Theory For Student-Teacher Relationships And Learning, Adam Parker Cogbill May 2018

Working Alliances: The Implications Of Person-Centered Theory For Student-Teacher Relationships And Learning, Adam Parker Cogbill

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation project, I interview four therapists and four writing teachers to learn if there were any significant similarities in differences in their approaches to dyadic relationships with students and clients. By dyadic, I mean what happens between individuals in a 1-on-1 setting when subjectivities collide. I was guided in my investigation by the core concepts of person-centered theory, which have heavily influenced the work of clinical therapists for the past half-century or more. These concepts are congruence, or whether one’s behaviors and speech match what one is feeling; empathy, the process of entering and becoming familiar with another’s …

Impacts And Management Of Foliar Pathogens Of Eastern White Pine (Pinus Strobus) In The Northeastern United States, Cameron Ducayet Mcintire May 2018

Impacts And Management Of Foliar Pathogens Of Eastern White Pine (Pinus Strobus) In The Northeastern United States, Cameron Ducayet Mcintire

Doctoral Dissertations

White Pine Needle Damage (WPND) is a complex of foliar fungal pathogens currently impacting forests in the Northeastern US. Since ca. 2009, chlorosis and defoliation caused by WPND has been observed in stands of eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L) throughout the region. A changing climate, notably warmer temperatures and higher than average spring precipitation in the region are thought to be exacerbating the establishment and spread of these native pathogens. The goals of this research are to enhance the understanding of the timing and magnitude of WPND-induced defoliations across infected stands, assess the physiological response of trees affected by …

"There's No Way A College Can Close": Student Experiences In A For-Profit Institution Closure, Jennifer M. Logsdon May 2018

"There's No Way A College Can Close": Student Experiences In A For-Profit Institution Closure, Jennifer M. Logsdon

Doctoral Dissertations

Higher education in the United States has always been considered a pathway for individuals to achieve professional, personal, and socio-economic success. For-profit colleges claim that the for-profit sector provides a service to a demographic of the population neglected by traditional institutions. Since the enactment of neoliberal policy increasing the for-profit sectors participation in federally funded programs, there have been concerns raised regarding the impact of this sector on the lives of the students it serves. Additionally, as for-profit institutions struggle to adhere to federal guidelines, a number of institutions have closed their doors, making it necessary for students to find …

The Photosynthesis-Foliar Nitrogen Relationship In Deciduous And Evergreen Forests In New Hampshire, Conor Madison May 2018

The Photosynthesis-Foliar Nitrogen Relationship In Deciduous And Evergreen Forests In New Hampshire, Conor Madison

Master's Theses and Capstones

Biomass production in forests is a key process in the global carbon (C) cycle that is strongly linked to photosynthesis and related leaf traits. Spatially, relationships among leaf traits can vary as a function of climate, soils and species composition. As modeling approaches to estimate C gain improve, the need to understand variability in leaf traits becomes increasingly important. Here, we characterized the relationship between photosynthetic capacity (Amax), foliar nitrogen and leaf mass per area (LMA) within and across species in northern hardwood and evergreen stands of the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire, a region that has been …

Development Of Electronic Testing Devices That Detect Peripheral Neuropathies, Peter Svendsen May 2018

Development Of Electronic Testing Devices That Detect Peripheral Neuropathies, Peter Svendsen

Master's Theses and Capstones

There are a number of different testing devices to detect carpal tunnel syndrome and other peripheral neuropathies. Electronic tests known as nerve conduction studies assess the health of a nerve by measuring the amplitude and velocity of action potentials traveling along that nerve. The action potentials are generated by stimulating the nerve with a high voltage. The shape, duration and amplitude of the high voltage stimulus are all carefully selected in order to make the stimulus both safe and effective. Nerve conduction studies are generally considered reliable and accurate. However, they are very complex and expensive.

Student development and health issues among college students are becoming a major concern for academic institutions. To address these issues, universities offer campus recreational sport programs that encourage physical activity and healthy lifestyles. There is a robust literature regarding the benefits of general campus recreation participation; however, little research has explored participants’ perception of benefits related to certain campus recreation programming.

This study examined data from Intramural Sports and Sport Club participants at a northern New England university (n = 324). Survey questions assessed students’ transferable skills and general health perceptions. Results indicated that several transferable skills and health perceptions …

Understanding The Marketing And Management Of Trails Using Pestel Analysis, Holly Fosher May 2018

Understanding The Marketing And Management Of Trails Using Pestel Analysis, Holly Fosher

Master's Theses and Capstones

Trails are an important resource for local communities because they provide health, social, economical, and environmental benefits (“Headwaters Economics”, 2016). When trails are made accessible in towns, it facilitates communal connection, draws in tourists, increases support for conservation lands, and creates safer trails. Trails are valuable to towns because they are an integral piece of their livelihood, therefore the management of trails should be researched to understand how to sustain public use. For this study, twelve (N = 12) conservation commissioners, town managers, and other trail stakeholders from two counties in a Northeastern state were interviewed about how they manage …

2018 State-Of The Science Of Dispersants And Dispersed Oil (Ddo) In U.S. Arctic Waters: Eco-Toxicity And Sublethal Impacts, Coastal Response Research Center (Crrc) May 2018

2018 State-Of The Science Of Dispersants And Dispersed Oil (Ddo) In U.S. Arctic Waters: Eco-Toxicity And Sublethal Impacts, Coastal Response Research Center (Crrc)

Coastal Response Research Center

Chemical dispersants were employed on an unprecedented scale during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and could be a response option should a large spill occur in Arctic waters. The use of dispersants in response to that spill raised concerns regarding the need for chemical dispersants, the fate of the oil and dispersants, and their potential impacts on human health and the environment. Concerns remain that would be more evident in the Arctic, where the remoteness and harsh environmental conditions would make a response to any oil spill very difficult. An outcome of a 2013 Arctic …

Disparities Between Indigenous And Non-Indigenous Educational Attainment: Exploring Factors Related To Low Average School Naplan Scores In The Northern Territory, Rachel Coleman

Master's Theses and Capstones

The Indigenous population is a small minority in most areas of Australia, except the Northern Territory where Indigenous people make up roughly a quarter of the population. Indigenous people have lower educational achievement when compared to non-Indigenous people in Australia, with almost half as many of Indigenous having completed Year 12 or equivalent as non-Indigenous in 2016. The focus of this study was to identify factors that may be influencing the lower educational attainment of Indigenous students. Factors related to increased Indigenous presence in a school were expected to predict lower educational attainment. Full or partial support for some of …

Regulation Of Gaba Release By Presynaptic Cav2.2 In The Basolateral Amygdala And Infralimbic Cortex, Maxwell Robert Blazon May 2018

Regulation Of Gaba Release By Presynaptic Cav2.2 In The Basolateral Amygdala And Infralimbic Cortex, Maxwell Robert Blazon

Master's Theses and Capstones

Anxiety is linked to dysregulation of neuronal activity in several brain regions including the infralimbic (IL) area of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala (BLA). Disruptions to the balance of excitatory and inhibitory signaling in these regions are implicated in anxiety-like behaviors in animals and anxiety disorders in humans. The neuronal circuitry between excitatory neurons, known as pyramidal cells (P-cells), and inhibitory neurons, known as interneurons (INs), is a primary target for anxiety modulation at the cellular level. INs, particularly the subtype that contain the neuropeptide cholecystokinin (CCK+INs), form inhibitory synapses around P-cells. Through …

Culturally Relevant Leisure Experiences As Predictors Of Intercultural Sensitivity Among Study Abroad Students, Samantha Powers May 2018

Culturally Relevant Leisure Experiences As Predictors Of Intercultural Sensitivity Among Study Abroad Students, Samantha Powers

Master's Theses and Capstones

Study abroad programs are promoted on the premise that they offer valuable cross-cultural experiences and provide students with desired 21st century skills including global awareness, cross-cultural communications, and intercultural sensitivity (IS); however, simply to send students abroad is not enough to ensure skill development. Rather, there is a need for intentional pedagogy. As Engle and Engle (2004) have suggested regarding IS, the most successful study abroad programs seem to include culturally relevant leisure within the host community. Moreover, the theoretical framework of Bennett’s Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity has suggested the importance of various culturally relevant leisure experiences in assisting …

The Effects Of Invasive Tunicates On The Growth And Reproduction Of The Blood Star, Henricia Sanguinolenta, Kaitlin Samantha Van Volkom

Master's Theses and Capstones

Introduced species have become established in multiple systems around the globe where they are both predators and have been recognized as prey by native species. In the Gulf of Maine, introduced tunicates (Botrylloides violaceus, Diplosoma listeranium, and Didemnum vexillum) have become established in fouling and natural rocky benthic systems. In recent years, many native species such as Mitrella lunata and Stronglyocentrotus droebachiensis have recognized and begun to consume these introduced species. One such species is the native blood star, Henricia sanguinolenta. H. sanguinolenta, is a generalist sponge predator, but it has started to consume these invasive tunicate species as a …
