Assessment Of The Localized Flow And Tidal Energy Conversion System At An Estuarine Bridge, Kaelin Chancey Jan 2019

Assessment Of The Localized Flow And Tidal Energy Conversion System At An Estuarine Bridge, Kaelin Chancey

Master's Theses and Capstones

As part of the Living Bridge Project, a cross-flow tidal turbine and estuarine instrumentation have been deployed in the Piscataqua River at the Memorial Bridge connecting Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Kittery, Maine. At the turbine location, flow measurements were taken and are compared to a previous, nearby tidal energy resource assessment. A higher mean kinetic power density was observed for the most recent acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) survey conducted. Acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) data was collected in order to study the spatial distribution of the currents around the turbine. Differences along the turbine deployment platform were determined to be …

Examining The Tragedy Of The Commons Dilemma: Looking At The New Hampshire Fishing Industry, Peter A. Brown

Honors Theses and Capstones

The Tragedy of the Commons is a widely known problem debated amongst economists for years. Even the topic of the Tragedy of the Commons when applied to fishing has been debated several times. The fishing industry is a major part of the culture and economy here in New Hampshire and the conversation how to properly tax and regulate it to combat this problem is one that has been taking place and will continue to take place for several years. The purpose of this project was to examine this problem at a state level and look at the relationship between State …

How College Students Discuss Their Relationships, John R. Domenico Jan 2019

How College Students Discuss Their Relationships, John R. Domenico

Honors Theses and Capstones

It is a statistically significant fact that individuals who identify as homosexual are more likely to experience intimate partner violence (IPV.) Despite this, statistically, it is less likely for those who identify as homosexual to report IPV to healthcare clinicians or to law enforcement. “How College Students Discuss their Relationships” examines the implications of intimate partner violence in college students who identify as homosexual and the repercussions IPV may have on discussions with healthcare clinicians. By performing semi-structured interviews with individuals who identify as homosexual on the UNH campus, mental health outcomes of emotional intimate partner violence in …

Uncertainty Across The Pond: An Evaluation Of Equity Market Returns And Currency Fluctuations In Reaction To Key Brexit Events, Sean Michael Andreasson

Honors Theses and Capstones

The citizens of the United Kingdom shocked the world on June 23rd, 2016 when they voted in favor of leaving the European Union. The 3-year aftermath of the Referendum has created a large amount of uncertainty regarding the future of the United Kingdom economy and its post-Brexit relationship with the European Union. The purpose of this research is to explore how the financial markets react to Brexit news headlines, compare the returns of European and non-European exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and currencies, identify common themes, and ultimately shed light on how investors weigh-in on the interconnectedness of the UK, …

The Role Of Small Reservoirs In Reducing Reactive N Export Via Denitrification, Margaret Phillips, Wil Wollheim Jan 2019

The Role Of Small Reservoirs In Reducing Reactive N Export Via Denitrification, Margaret Phillips, Wil Wollheim

Honors Theses and Capstones

Reactive nitrogen (N), which harms ecosystem health, has been increasing in the biosphere, leading to higher N export to coastal ecosystems. Although man-made reservoirs can be significant sources of greenhouse gases, they can also retain N, thus reducing N export. Because many dams are relics from industrial hydropower, their removal is becoming increasingly common. It is therefore crucial to understand the ecological tradeoffs of man-made reservoirs. While previous studies have examined nutrient budgets and denitrification at inputs and outputs of large reservoirs, small reservoir dynamics remain understudied. In this study, we measured inputs and outputs of NO3 and N …

Three-Dimensional Echocardiographic Analysis Of The Equine Aortic Valve, Amber Mcelhinney Jan 2019

Three-Dimensional Echocardiographic Analysis Of The Equine Aortic Valve, Amber Mcelhinney

Honors Theses and Capstones

This research focused on 3D echocardiography of the aortic valve (AV) in horses. Aortic regurgitation (AR) can be a common finding in older horses, and in severe cases can result in decreased performance and even sudden cardiac death. Standard AR diagnosis includes 2D echocardiography from the right side of the horse. Three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) records a pyramid of tissue, showing structures in the heart difficult to visualize in 2D methods, and can be more accurate as it does not rely as heavily on placement of the transducer. Nine images of normal AV’s were assessed, and still frames of anatomical structures …

Designing And 3d Printing Mm-Wave Lenses Using Kel-F For Use In Dynamic Nuclear Polarization, Kellie Mcguire Jan 2019

Designing And 3d Printing Mm-Wave Lenses Using Kel-F For Use In Dynamic Nuclear Polarization, Kellie Mcguire

Honors Theses and Capstones

This thesis project presents a novel method of 3D printing with the fluoroplastic Kel-F (PCTFE) as an alternative to traditional machining and demonstrates its use in creating target cups for dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) experiments. Kel-F is used by the UNH Nuclear Physics Group in its tensor-polarized target project because the material has several properties that make it well-suited to this purpose: transparency to millimeter-waves, plasticity at cryogenic temperatures, and the absence of any unpaired protons that would add an unwanted background to the NMR signal used to measure nucleon polarization. As this paper shows, these properties are not significantly …

Peer Support For Addiction In The Inpatient Setting, Rebecca Sweeney Jan 2019

Peer Support For Addiction In The Inpatient Setting, Rebecca Sweeney

DNP Scholarly Projects

Background: In 2006 the Institute of Medicine reported that combined mental illness and substance use disorder was the second leading cause of disability and death in women and the highest cause in men. More recent data obtained from the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (Ahrnsbratz et al 2016) indicates in 2016 only one in ten of the people who need treatment, receive it. At Cambridge Health Alliance’s Everett Hospital, the site of this pilot project, opioid overdose and acute alcohol intoxication comprise one in every ten visits in the Emergency Department. In January of 2018, CHA partnered …

Implementation Of Safe Patient Toileting To Decrease Patient Falls On Medical-Surgical Unit, Kimberly A. Goldsborough

DNP Scholarly Projects

BACKGROUND: Patient falls are a serious safety concern in the hospital setting throughout the country. Falls are one of the most challenging patient safety events to prevent, as there are many contributing factors with toileting activities producing the highest incidence. Fall prevention bundles are used to minimize and reduce these such events although multifaceted. The project was conducted with an academic medical center on an acute inpatient medical-surgical unit primarily housing burn wound patients. Nursing leaders and front-line nursing staff participated.

METHODS: Literature review to determine the gap in knowledge of interventions to prevent acute inpatient falls was completed. Concepts …
