Retention Time Of Microplastics In The Purple Sea Urchin (Arbacia Punctulata), Alexandra Shore Jan 2026

Retention Time Of Microplastics In The Purple Sea Urchin (Arbacia Punctulata), Alexandra Shore

Honors Theses and Capstones

Marine ecosystems around the world are facing the problem of plastic pollution. Large pieces of plastic eventually degrade into smaller microplastics that are suspended in the water column and sink to the seabed. Sea urchins are exposed to microplastics as they graze on the sea floor and can accidentally consume these pollutants. Sea urchins are ecologically important animals because they physically alter their ecosystem via grazing and are integral part of marine food webs. To better understand how sea urchins interact with microplastics, purple sea urchins were exposed to microfibers and microspheres in a laboratory setting, and the retention time …

This dissertation advances urban resilience science along two complementary empirical frontiers. The first investigation develops a deep reinforcement learning framework for socially equitable, flood-aware bridge portfolio maintenance optimization. Using Proximal Policy Optimization, a portfolio of 19 flood-vulnerable bridges in Suffolk County, Massachusetts is optimized over a multi-year planning horizon integrating HAZUS-based flood hazard simulation across four return-period scenarios (10, 50, 100, and 500 years), HEC-18 hydraulic scour …

From Surfaces To Scaffolds: Tuning Hydrogel Microenvironments To Control Cell-Material Interaction, Tran Truong Jan 2026

From Surfaces To Scaffolds: Tuning Hydrogel Microenvironments To Control Cell-Material Interaction, Tran Truong

Doctoral Dissertations

The last 40 years of in vitro cell and tissue biology have relied heavily on tissue culture plastic (TCPS), which offers high transparency and a simple, user-friendly method for growing adherent cells. Unfortunately, TCPS has limitations, such as its rigidity, which may alter cell shape, disrupt cell signaling, and ultimately affect cell fate. The poor control over the adsorption of proteins to TCPS and the fact that surface chemistry is fixed on this material are only two examples of the limitations that motivate the development of hydrogel-based culturing platforms, during which the mechanical properties, charge, hydrophobicity, and ligand presentation can …

Entrainment And Surfacing Dynamics Of Submerged, Buoyant Turbulent Jets, Zeeshan Saeed Jan 2026

Entrainment And Surfacing Dynamics Of Submerged, Buoyant Turbulent Jets, Zeeshan Saeed

Doctoral Dissertations

Turbulent entrainment (TE) in buoyant jets plays a key role in dispersing environmental contaminants, carrying significant socio-economic implications. For example, the transport of heat and solutes through submarine volcanoes and the discharge of subglacial meltwater crucially affect the marine ecosphere. This, in turn, impacts coastal communities, the supply chains they support, and the broader socio-economic landscape. Therefore, advancing our understanding of how submerged buoyant jets mix and developing remote sensing tools to help monitor their changing status is crucial for devising strategies to mitigate marine-related challenges quickly, economically, and effectively. Therefore, this dissertation has three primary objectives: (I) examine the …

Emotional Complexity In Context: Within-Person Variability In Emotional Granularity, Emotion Covariation, And Emodiversity, Kristen Diann Petagna Jan 2026

Emotional Complexity In Context: Within-Person Variability In Emotional Granularity, Emotion Covariation, And Emodiversity, Kristen Diann Petagna

Doctoral Dissertations

Key features of emotional complexity include emotional granularity, the ability to identify feelings with precision; emodiversity, the number and evenness of different emotions experienced; and emotion covariation, the tendency to experience positive and negative emotions independently. Prior work has largely treated these features as trait-like. This dissertation examines whether these features are dynamic by investigating how they vary within individuals over time and across contexts. In Chapter 2, participants (N =123) reported their emotions multiple times a day for 6 weeks and completed biweekly assessments of mental health symptoms. Emotional granularity and covariation increased over time, whereas emodiversity decreased, and …

Detection And Management Of Attacks On Synchronized Networks, Michael T. Spearman Jan 2026

Detection And Management Of Attacks On Synchronized Networks, Michael T. Spearman

Honors Theses and Capstones

The Precision Time Protocol (IEEE 1588) provides sub-microsecond clock synchronization across packet-switched networks and has become foundational infrastructure in 5G fronthaul, industrial control systems, and financial exchanges. Despite its criticality, most deployed PTP networks operate without active security monitoring, and no standardized detection mechanism exists for the class of attacks that deliberately stay below conventional jitter thresholds. This thesis investigates whether hardware-level ptp4l offset logs alone are sufficient to reliably detect two such attacks, slowly wandering packet delay injection and rogue master spoofing, and whether detection can occur before severe synchronization failure.

A hardware-in-the-loop testbed was constructed using two hosts …

Forage Legume Community Dynamics In Response To Stand Management, Nicholas Warren Jan 2026

Forage Legume Community Dynamics In Response To Stand Management, Nicholas Warren

Doctoral Dissertations

A primary challenge for perennial forage production systems is maintaining crop productivity and forage quality over time. Including legume species in these systems is an opportunity to reduce external inputs, to extend the seasonal productivity of a pasture, and to balance the nutritional characteristics of grass species. However, legume persistence in mixed stands is frequently poor. Identifying harvest practices, legume species, or species mixtures that improve legume persistence would help to maximize the ecosystem services of forages. I conducted a four-year field experiment (2019 to 2022) in southeastern New Hampshire to evaluate the productivity and persistence of four perennial legumes …

A Period And Cohort Analysis Of Sustained Fertility Decline In The United States, Tyrus Parker Jan 2026

A Period And Cohort Analysis Of Sustained Fertility Decline In The United States, Tyrus Parker

Doctoral Dissertations

Fertility rates in the United States have declined by 21 percent since the most recent peak in 2007. Despite more childbearing-aged women in the United States, this fertility rate decline has resulted in fewer births. Tracking these shifts is not a purely demographic exercise. Rather, a declining number of births has wide-ranging effects on society, including school closures, loss of labor and delivery centers, and eventually labor force implications as the number of workers shrinks. To examine the causes of modern fertility decline, this dissertation contains three interrelated analyses. I first examine population-wide fertility trends using data from the Center …
