Sununu's Handling Of Covid-19 & Overall Job Performance Ratings Continue To Slide 9/23/2021, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
Approval of Chris Sununu's overall performance as Governor, as well as his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, have continued their summer slide. Sununu’s personal favorability rating has also continued to decline. For the first time in nearly two decades of Granite State Polls, less than half of Granite Staters think the state is headed in the right direction. Residents most frequently cite COVID-19 as the most important problem facing the state, while others mention jobs, the economy, or housing.

Futurama: An Immersive Experience Of America's Automotive Future, James Miller
Journal of Motorsport Culture & History
General Motors’ Futurama exhibit at the 1939-40 New York World’s Fair offered a wildly popular immersive experience of American automobility twenty years in the future. The Fair proclaimed the “Dawn of a New Day” in “The World of Tomorrow” through comprehensive innovative architecture and design, which promoted the primary role of new technology, especially in the field of transportation. Futurama harnessed techniques of theatre and multi-media in unprecedented ways. Its narrow aim was to foster the construction of new highway systems hospitable to the growing population of modern cars. More broadly, Futurama sought to inculcate a new way of thinking …

Environmental Sustainability And The Framing Of Formula E Motor Racing In Uk And Flemish Newspapers, Timothy Robeers
Journal of Motorsport Culture & History
Developed in cooperation with the Fédération Internationale d’Automobile (FIA) as motor sport’s governing body, the fully electric racing series Formula E represents itself as a driving force in making the motor sport and automotive industries more environmentally sustainable (hereafter: ES). However, the question remains whether such ES efforts are picked up on by the media, and more specifically newspapers that are still considered a benchmark for in-depth and reflective journalism, despite a dramatic rise of online and social media coverage of sport. Combining a quantitative content analysis with a qualitative framing analysis, this article identified, compared and contrasted frames, and …

Granite Staters Divided On Employer Vaccine Mandate; Nearly All Unvaccinated Will Leave Job If Shot Required 9/21/2021, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
Granite Staters are divided over President Biden's plan to require large employers to ensure employees are vaccinated against COVID-19 or are tested weekly. Slim majorities support requiring healthcare workers and federal workers and contractors to be vaccinated while support is higher for requiring employers to provide paid time off for vaccinations. Just under one in five New Hampshire adults say they will not get a COVID-19 vaccine and nearly all of these individuals say they would leave their job if vaccination were required. Face mask usage is unchanged since June in the state but stress related to the pandemic has …

Inequities In Job Recovery During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Year Later, Rogelio Saenz, Corey Sparks, Asiya Validova
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Rogelio Sáenz, Corey Sparks, and Asiya Validova report that in April 2020, after the first two months of significant spread of COVID-19 in the United States, nearly 25 million fewer people had a job. In June 2021, there were still 5.9 million fewer people employed, representing a drop of 3.7 percent in workers since before COVID. Workers of color, women, and those with lower levels of education have consistently had the highest unemployment rates, a trend that persisted through June 2021.
The recovery of the workforce has not been equal, with dramatic differences based on race/ethnicity, …

Nitrous acid (HONO) is an important precursor to hydroxyl radical (OH) that determines atmospheric oxidative capacity and thus impacts climate and air quality. Wildfire is not only a major direct source of HONO, it also results in highly polluted conditions that favor the heterogeneous formation of HONO from nitrogen oxides (NOx= NO + NO2) and nitrate on both ground and particle surfaces. However, these processes remain poorly constrained. To quantitatively constrain the HONO budget under various fire and/or smoke conditions, we combine a unique dataset of field concentrations and isotopic ratios (15N / 14N and 18O / 16O) of NOx …

Sediment Transport And The Temporal Stability Of The Seafloor In The Hampton-Seabrook Estuary, Nh: A Numerical Model Study, Katherine Vera Von Krusenstiern
Sediment Transport And The Temporal Stability Of The Seafloor In The Hampton-Seabrook Estuary, Nh: A Numerical Model Study, Katherine Vera Von Krusenstiern
Master's Theses and Capstones
Observations of sediment transport pathways and bathymetric change are often difficult to obtain over spatial and temporal scales needed to maintain economic and ecological viability in dynamic coastal and estuarine environments. As a consequence, numerical models have become a useful tool to examine the sediment transport and evolution of inlets, estuaries, and harbors. In this work, sediment transport at the Hampton-Seabrook Estuary (HSE) in southern New Hampshire is simulated using the Coupled Ocean Atmospheric Waves and Sediment Transport (COAWST) modeling framework to assess bathymetric change over a 5-year period from September 2011 to November 2016. Initial bathymetry and sediment grain …
Cover Crop-Based No-Till For Small Farms: Tradeoffs Of Termination Time, Method, And Ecosystem Services, Natalie Lounsbury
Cover Crop-Based No-Till For Small Farms: Tradeoffs Of Termination Time, Method, And Ecosystem Services, Natalie Lounsbury
Doctoral Dissertations
Agriculture must adapt to and mitigate multiple environmental crises including climate change, overuse of herbicides, and soil degradation. Cover crops are a promising tool to do so because they protect soil from erosion, increase perenniality (i.e. year-round plant cover) and carbon contributions to farming systems, capture, recycle, and fix nitrogen, and suppress weeds through multiple mechanisms. Terminating high-residue cover crops to produce an in situ mulch for no-till production has added benefits of eliminating the need for tillage, protecting soil against extreme precipitation events and drought, and contributing to weed suppression. However, there are few non-chemical ways to terminate cover …
The Dissemination And Reproduction Of Dominant Ideologies On Social Media: Reddit Through The Lens Of Color-Blind Racism And Gender-Blind Sexism, Paul Anskat
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation explores the frameworks of color-blind racism and gender-blind sexism as they are disseminated through the social media site Reddit. I analyze data in the form of posts and comments submitted to the site. Qualitative discourse analysis reveals employment of the frames of color-blindness and gender-blindness as well as narratives which function to anchor the dominant ideologies to apparent lived experiences. This dissertation offers two major contributions to the scholarship of racism and sexism. First, the findings demonstrate that ideologies of race and gender are often articulated through common narratives and intertwined rhetoric, establishing a foundation for future research …
The Influence Of Third Parties, Perfectionism, And Familial Socioeconomic Status On College Student Mental Health And Perceptions Of Social Support, Amanda Fontaine
The Influence Of Third Parties, Perfectionism, And Familial Socioeconomic Status On College Student Mental Health And Perceptions Of Social Support, Amanda Fontaine
Doctoral Dissertations
Mental health has long been a fruitful area of sociological inquiry, and much remains to be illuminated about the ways in which the social context and intrapersonal factors intersect to impact individuals’ psychological wellbeing. Among college students particularly, stresses such as academic pressure and interpersonal conflicts contribute to the degradation of mental health. While sociological theories such as the stress process perspective have long been employed to study linkages between stress and mental wellbeing among this population, few studies have examined the specific characteristics of social relationships most beneficial to students in distress. Utilizing survey responses collected from both public …
Seneca, The Humors, And Revenge Tragedy, Andrew Stesienko
Seneca, The Humors, And Revenge Tragedy, Andrew Stesienko
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation argues that moral and religious authorities of the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods adapted rules for emotional governance from Senecan philosophy. These Senecan rules helped institute a performance-based approach to managing emotion, which relied on programmatic meditation, rhetoric, and behavior to change one’s emotional state. This approach ostensibly offered more personal control over affective inclination, which according to the period’s Galenic paradigms, was heavily influenced by environmental and physiological factors. My project examines revenge tragedy to highlight Senecan-inspired affect management as practiced by aspiring avengers. Because revenging hopefuls must amplify and then mobilize their feelings in order to achieve …
Economics Of Pest Control And Pollination Conservation: Perspectives From A Bioeconomic Model And A Choice Experiment, Linghui Wu
Doctoral Dissertations
The first chapter focuses on the need to reduce pollinator exposure to harmful pesticides has led to calls to expedite theadoption of integrated pest management (IPM). We make the case that IPM is not explicitly 'pollinator friendly', but rather must be adapted to reduce impacts on pollinators and to facilitate synergies between crop pollination and pest control practices and ecosystem services. To reconcile these diverse needs, we introduce a systematic framework for 'integrated pest and pollinator management' (IPPM). We also highlight novel tools to unify monitoring and economic decision-making processes for IPPM and outline key policy actions and knowledge gaps. …
