Behavioral Markers And Endophenotypes Underlying Individual Differences In Ethanol Use, Haily R. Knapp
Behavioral Markers And Endophenotypes Underlying Individual Differences In Ethanol Use, Haily R. Knapp
Honors Theses and Capstones
The main concern of this study is to evaluate the neurobiology of ethanol self-administration and cue-induced reinstatement in rats and its implications for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) prevention and treatment. The purpose of this study is to use a pre-clinical model of ethanol use to understand the individual effects at the neurobiological level. The study utilized economic demand and negative consequence testing to evaluate the rats' motivation to consume ethanol and their ability to relapse after periods of abstinence. The results showed individual and sex differences in ethanol consumption, with rats who placed a higher value on ethanol being more …

The data methodology involves a literature review, and interviews with people who have adopted these technologies, people who have not adopted these technologies, and companies that sell these technologies. The results reveal that green home technology is something that is becoming more commonly adopted, due to factors like cost …
Nursing Students' And Recent Graduates' Observations Of Fatphobia In The Clinical Setting, Myah Kerbyson
Nursing Students' And Recent Graduates' Observations Of Fatphobia In The Clinical Setting, Myah Kerbyson
Honors Theses and Capstones
Objectives: To investigate the incidence of fatphobic behaviors among the healthcare team and how nursing students’ and recent graduates’ observations of fatphobic behaviors impact the provision of affirming care.
Background: Weight stigma among healthcare providers can lead to fatphobia (e.g., hurtful or stigmatizing language, dismissal of symptoms). These experiences can negatively impact patients’ health and experiences with healthcare, leading some patients to avoid or delay seeking healthcare services. Fatphobia can also cause increased stress levels among patients, which places them at a higher risk of several diseases. The short-term and long-term effects of fatphobia lead overall worse health outcomes.

The Relationship Between Alpha-Defensin 1 And Gut Microbiome Composition In A Population Of Bhutanese Refugee Adults With A High Prevalence Of Type 2 Diabetes, Daisha Alana Drake
The Relationship Between Alpha-Defensin 1 And Gut Microbiome Composition In A Population Of Bhutanese Refugee Adults With A High Prevalence Of Type 2 Diabetes, Daisha Alana Drake
Honors Theses and Capstones
The New Hampshire Bhutanese refugee population is disproportionately affected by obesity and metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes. The gut microbiome is important for overall human health, with high microbial richness and diversity being associated with reduced chronic inflammation and type 2 diabetes risk. Microbial richness and diversity have been shown to decrease in United States (U.S.) immigrant populations, but have not been measured in refugee populations. One of the anti-inflammatory functions of the gut microbiome is related to the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which regulate pro-inflammatory cytokine production. Alpha-defensin 1 is an antimicrobial peptide that is …

Objective: The next generation of nurses have increased educational preparation to provide affirming care to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, but an evaluation of the effectiveness of this teaching has not been performed. The purpose of this study was to identify nursing student and recent nursing graduate observations of affirming and non-affirming care of LGBTQ+ people in healthcare settings during clinical experiences. We also sought to understand how those experiences affect their ability and willingness to provide affirming health care to LGBTQ+ people.
Methods: Participants filled out a mixed methods Qualtrics survey that was distributed through school …
Effects Of Aging On The Reproductive Success Of Female Saltmarsh Sparrows (Ammospiza Caudacutus) In Maine And New Hampshire, Isabella Rose Collamati
Effects Of Aging On The Reproductive Success Of Female Saltmarsh Sparrows (Ammospiza Caudacutus) In Maine And New Hampshire, Isabella Rose Collamati
Honors Theses and Capstones
The saltmarsh sparrow (Ammospiza caudacutus) is a ground-nesting specialist in coastal salt marshes of the Northeast. Rising sea-levels increase the loss of offspring due to tidal flooding, reducing nest success and resulting in a sharp population decline. In other avian species, age has been shown to affect nest success through altering fertility, behavior, and the number of young produced, favoring older individuals. I investigated age effects on nest success of female saltmarsh sparrows using nest monitoring data collected at four sites of a long-term demographic monitoring project: Chapman's Landing (Stratham, NH), Eldridge Marsh (Wells, ME), Popham Beach (Phippsburg, …
Student Attitudes And Perceptions Regarding Food Waste At Unh Dining Halls, Alexander Soule
Student Attitudes And Perceptions Regarding Food Waste At Unh Dining Halls, Alexander Soule
Honors Theses and Capstones
UNH works in the hospitality sector of businesses. Over the years, food waste has grown to become an alarmingly increasing problem for both the environment and businesses operating in the sector. While UNH has many food waste mitigation efforts, there is still an opportunity for both the dining halls and students to work together to help reduce food waste. A survey was performed and analyzed which reveals that many students who frequented the dining halls are willing to better adjust their dining practices to help mitigate food waste. However, this is contingent on the dining halls presenting the information of …

Nearly one out of six deaths in 2020, around ten million people, were caused by cancer, making it a leading cause of death worldwide (WHO, 2022). This major public health issue, in addition to the rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens, provides a high demand for the discovery of new pharmaceutical drugs to be used clinically to treat these conditions. The Streptomyces genus accounts to produce 39% of all microbial metabolites currently approved for human health, indicating its potential as an important species to study for antimicrobial and anticancer agents. The long linear genome of Streptomyces contains specialized sequences known as …
Assessing Parental Conversational Overlap In A Museum Setting And Its Correlation With Child Language Skills, Madison Gould
Assessing Parental Conversational Overlap In A Museum Setting And Its Correlation With Child Language Skills, Madison Gould
Honors Theses and Capstones
Research has identified the importance of quality interactions with parents, caregivers, and peers in the promotion of language acquisition. We question how certain aspects of parental language, primarily repetition, expansion, and extension, correlate with child language skills. There is limited research available regarding the impact of conversational overlap on a child’s language development at a singular time point, with most studies being longitudinal, especially when assessing conversations between children and their caregivers in different settings, such as a museum exhibit. Our findings suggest that children need less parental recasting as they age and as their language skills are bolstered.
General-Purpose Planning Algorithms In Partially-Observable Stochastic Games, Bryan Mckenney
General-Purpose Planning Algorithms In Partially-Observable Stochastic Games, Bryan Mckenney
Honors Theses and Capstones
Partially observable stochastic games (POSGs) are difficult domains to plan in because they feature multiple agents with potentially opposing goals, parts of the world are hidden from the agents, and some actions have random outcomes. It is infeasible to solve a large POSG optimally. While it may be tempting to design a specialized algorithm for finding suboptimal solutions to a particular POSG, general-purpose planning algorithms can work just as well, but with less complexity and domain knowledge required. I explore this idea in two different POSGs: Navy Defense and Duelyst.
In Navy Defense, I show that a specialized algorithm framework, …
Anti-Queer Policy As It Translates To Violence Against The Lgbt Community, Kendall Bush
Anti-Queer Policy As It Translates To Violence Against The Lgbt Community, Kendall Bush
Honors Theses and Capstones
In recent years, the amount of anti-LGBT policy introduced is rapidly increasing (ACLU, 2023). Contemporary policy focuses mainly on queer youth and gender identity, attacking gender-affirming health care and limiting LGBT discussions in public schools. Although these policies are particularly insidious, they follow a trend of queer persecution in the United States. Within federal policy and across state legislation, the panopticon of anti-LGBT policy ensures that queer bodies are policed and monitored. This paper posits that the increase in anti-queer policy translates to an increase in experiences of external and indirect violence. Based on findings from the UCR and various …
Dog Weight, Age, And Sex Relationship With Shelter Length-Of-Availability At Pope Memorial Humane Society, Logan Lajoie
Dog Weight, Age, And Sex Relationship With Shelter Length-Of-Availability At Pope Memorial Humane Society, Logan Lajoie
Honors Theses and Capstones
Many factors can influence length-of-availability for dogs in shelters, ranging from factors of the dogs themselves to outside factors. The external factors could be the geographical location of the shelter and its clientele, the socioeconomic status of the area, how the individual shelter uses its resources, the region's policies, and more (Scarlett, 2021, p. 18). This study evaluated length-of-availability in dogs at the Pope Memorial Humane Society, a nonprofit animal shelter that serves Strafford County, New Hampshire. This allowed for dog-specific factors to be investigated more closely. The specific factors investigated were dog weight, age, and sex compared to their …
Incorporating Non-Pharmacological Labor Coping Methods To Improve Nursing Care And Reduce Primary Cesarean Section Rates: A Quality Improvement Project, Cait Maccabe
Honors Theses and Capstones
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Cesarean sections (c-sections), while life-saving in some circumstances, carry a significantly higher risk of morbidity and mortality than vaginal birth for birthing patients and neonates alike. Despite this, rates of c-section have continued to rise in the US and around the world. As primary cesarean births are highly likely to lead to repeat cesarean births, concerted efforts are being made to reduce them both broadly and within the setting of this quality improvement (QI) project: a labor and delivery unit located within a Level II trauma center in New Hampshire. A literature review provided evidence supporting the use …
Reducing Blood Culture Contamination Rates Through Staff Education: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Kirsten M. Mutuberria
Reducing Blood Culture Contamination Rates Through Staff Education: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Kirsten M. Mutuberria
Honors Theses and Capstones
BACKGROUND: Blood cultures are a widely utilized tool that aids in diagnosis and treatment plans. Contaminated cultures are incredibly costly, resulting in increased length of stay, opportunistic infections, pharmacy costs, repeated laboratory tests, and decreased reimbursements. Evidence suggests higher incidence rates of blood culture contaminations (BCCs) are seen in emergency departments (ED) compared to any other unit within a hospital system. The internationally accepted threshold of 3% is not often met, although recent studies suggest a lower rate is possible, even in critical care environments. A literature review resulted in data showing that educational-based interventions focusing on adherence to facility …

Neuronal Primary Cilia In Postnatal Brains & Alzheimer’S Disease Mice Eeg Patterns Under Fear Conditioning, Sierra Rose Mae Walsh
Honors Theses and Capstones
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative condition caused by the abnormal accumulation of amyloid β plaque. While small amounts of amyloid β plaque is to be expected with increased age, AD presents amyloid precursor protein (APP), a gene promoting inappropriate plaque formation, causing early neuronal death and tissue depreciation. APP23 transgenic mouse models contain the human mutation in the neocortical and hippocampal positions, areas revealing of plaque accumulation and memory loss. Within the hippocampal cortices, the primary cilia, which regulate higher cognition and neurodevelopment can be studied along with burst suppressions, or moments of high focal activity, to target potential …

Honors Theses and Capstones
Background: Implementation of a universal suicidality screening is considered best practice as it is associated with improved the detection of occult, or latent, suicide risk and can reduce subsequent risk. This quality improvement (QI) project evaluates the implementation of the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) to screen patients over the age of twelve at a regional healthcare system.
Methods: The QI project was conducted at Littleton Regional Healthcare (LRH) emergency department, a critical-access hospital in Littleton, New Hampshire that serves about 206 patients per week. Implementation of suicidality screening was of interest to LRH to promote mental health in the …
Plastic Storage In River Sediments Across An Urbanization Gradient In The Ipswich Watershed In Massachusetts, Jackie L. Harris
Plastic Storage In River Sediments Across An Urbanization Gradient In The Ipswich Watershed In Massachusetts, Jackie L. Harris
Honors Theses and Capstones
The importance of plastic pollution research has become apparent as plastic pollution has increased exponentially since its introduction in the 1950s. Plastics mechanically break down into minuscule particles called microplastics, which are plastic particles with a size range of 0.1 micrometers (μm) to 5 millimeters (mm). Most of the research on microplastic pollution has centered around marine ecosystems rather than freshwater ecosystems. More freshwater microplastic research to date is emerging but is still nascent and sparse. Furthermore, the idea that rivers are merely conduits of microplastics to the ocean is even more limited and ignores microplastic loading and retention in …

While Covid has significantly impacted the tourism industry, this research study analyzes the effect of the pandemic on consumers’ behavior towards vacation rental homes. More specifically, it focuses on the three main stages of vacation rental: the choice, booking, and stay. A qualitative research approach was used along with primary data collection. Interviews with individuals in Gen Z were collected in a semi-structured format with open-ended questions. The findings reveal that consumers are now more likely to choose vacation rental homes over other accommodations due to the space and privacy that rental homes provide. As a result of Covid, individuals …
Mpacts Of Parental Incarceration On Child's Well-Being And Interventions To Support Them, Anna Stacey Roberge
Mpacts Of Parental Incarceration On Child's Well-Being And Interventions To Support Them, Anna Stacey Roberge
Honors Theses and Capstones
This study reviews the effectiveness and impact of current interventions for children who have incarcerated parents in New Hampshire. The negative impacts of parental incarceration have led to the need for these intervention strategies. Recently psychologists and behavioral experts have conducted their studies which show that children who have incarcerated parents are more likely to display delinquent behaviors. Additionally, studies have shown that parental incarceration can lead to the experiencing of several more psychological difficulties, such as depression, anxiety, and learning disorders (Kremer et al., 2020). Several communities have worked to implement interventions that will help these children avoid falling …

Studying Us Iranian Immigrant Parents Negotiating Movements Toward Future Belonging, Fatemeh Hajnaghizadeh
Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, I reflect on how my work with Iranian immigrant parents in the US is informed by my lived experiences and research as a member of the minoritized group both in post-revolutionary Iran and the US. I recognize these experiences as informing my research on diasporic parenting throughout different stages, from designing the methodology to curating the theoretical framework and analyzing data. The desire to engage with minoritized ways of being and knowing beyond static essentializing viewpoints informs my approach to designing methodological processes that centralize confusion/disagreements with dominant practices and ideologies. In my study’s methodology, I use stories …

Elucidating Mechanisms Of Action Of Eicosapentaenoic Acid In Models Of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease, Samuel C.R. Sherratt
Doctoral Dissertations
ABSTRACTELUCUDATING MECHANISMS OF ACTION OF EICOSAPENTAENOIC ACID IN MODELS OF ATHEROSCLEROTIC CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE by Samuel C.R. Sherratt, B.S. University of New Hampshire Omega-3 fatty acids (O3FAs) possess beneficial properties for cardiovascular (CV) health and elevated O3FA levels are associated with lower incident risk for CV disease (CVD). Yet, treatment of at-risk patients with various O3FA formulations has produced disparate results in large, well-controlled and well-conducted clinical trials. The formulation of the O3FAs used, specifically monotherapy of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) or mixtures of EPA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), appears to dictate clinical efficacy, with benefits only observed with EPA monotherapy. The …
