Relationship Among Police Officers’ Alcohol Use, Child Sexual Abuse Material Exposure And Department Practices And Policies, Mahmuda Akter Sep 2023

Relationship Among Police Officers’ Alcohol Use, Child Sexual Abuse Material Exposure And Department Practices And Policies, Mahmuda Akter

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study explores the complex interplay of departmental practices and policies, exposure to child sexual abuse material (CSAM), social support, group connectedness, and gender in relation to alcohol consumption among police officers. The cross-sectional study utilizes self-reported data from 528 police investigators, forensic examiners and others connected with the criminal justice system from across the United States. Analysis reveals exposure to CSAM does not demonstrate a significant correlation with drinking habits among police officers. However, one significant positive relationship was observed between viewing CSAM that involves children aged 6 to 10 and drinking patterns. Furthermore, departmental practices are not associated …

Climate Change Resiliency In Coastal New Hampshire Roads With The Application Of Natural And Nature-Based Features, Lauren Emma Dwyre Sep 2023

Climate Change Resiliency In Coastal New Hampshire Roads With The Application Of Natural And Nature-Based Features, Lauren Emma Dwyre

Master's Theses and Capstones

Coastal communities rely heavily on their road network for the transportation of goods, services, and people. However, rising sea levels due to climate change are causing many of the communities’ transportation infrastructure to become vulnerable to coastal stressors. Understanding how sea-level rise (SLR) will impact pavement performance and identifying adaptation strategies is vital for making coastal communities more resilient. Natural and Nature-Based Features (NNBF) are becoming increasingly recognized as an adaptation solution to protect coastal communities from SLR-induced stressors and provide ecological and social benefits. This research aims to identify the linkages between storm surge and pavement damage and identify …

Replacing Ground Corn With Liquid Molasses In Diets Of Jersey Cows Fed Red Clover Baleage: Effects On Milk Production, Nitrogen Efficiency, Energy Utilization, And Enteric Methane Emissions, Adam Lee Konopka Sep 2023

Replacing Ground Corn With Liquid Molasses In Diets Of Jersey Cows Fed Red Clover Baleage: Effects On Milk Production, Nitrogen Efficiency, Energy Utilization, And Enteric Methane Emissions, Adam Lee Konopka

Master's Theses and Capstones

Molasses is a food byproduct rich in sucrose commonly added to the diets of cattle which has been reported to enhance milk production, promote rumen microbial growth, and increase digestibility of nutrients. Variable results obtained when partially replacing starch sources with molasses have led to an increased interest in the dietary conditions under which molasses could optimize the production of dairy cows. We aimed to investigate the effect of partially replacing ground corn with sugarcane liquid molasses on dry matter intake, milk yield and composition, enteric methane emissions, and N utilization in lactating Jersey cows fed red clover baleage. Eighteen …

Spatially Revealing The Liver’S Genetics In The Dehydration Resistant Cactus Mouse, Sean Pierre-Louis Sep 2023

Spatially Revealing The Liver’S Genetics In The Dehydration Resistant Cactus Mouse, Sean Pierre-Louis

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study is motivated by the global issue of climate change and its impact on the increasing prevalence of hot and arid environments, which in turn leads to water scarcity. While acknowledging these challenges, our research focuses on understanding the how desert-dwelling cactus mouse, P. eremicus, have adapt to their native desert environment. Using spatial transcriptomic sequencing, we created a spatial atlas of gene expression in hepatocytes and examined the baseline expression patterns in different zones. In this spatial atlas, hepatocyte genes were sequenced from their original spatial location in the tissue to establish the zonal patterns with neighboring hepatocytes. …

Evaluation Of A Wave Powered Water Pump Performance By Ocean Field Testing And Wec-Sim Modeling, Chelsea Kimball Sep 2023

Evaluation Of A Wave Powered Water Pump Performance By Ocean Field Testing And Wec-Sim Modeling, Chelsea Kimball

Master's Theses and Capstones

A rising demand for macroalgae (or seaweed) has led researchers to seek out methods of increasing macroalgae aquaculture yields. Macroalgae is a food product, and may be used in biofuel, animal feed, and fertilizer. Applying upwelling technology to macroalgae aquaculture has been shown to increase biomass yield. A wave-powered upwelling device (or water pump) generates cold, nutrient-rich water flow to the surface of an aquaculture operation. A wave pump device developed at University of New Hampshire was refurbished and outfitted with instrumentation to determine its performance. Testing in the laboratory on both the device and instrumentation was conducted to prepare …

Shoreline Oil Spill Response Knowledge Gaps And Technological Development Opportunities: A Workshop Report, Crrc, Noaa, Bsee Sep 2023

Shoreline Oil Spill Response Knowledge Gaps And Technological Development Opportunities: A Workshop Report, Crrc, Noaa, Bsee

Coastal Response Research Center

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) partnered with NOAA’s Office of Response and Restoration (OR&R) and UNH’s Coastal Response Research Center (CRRC) to plan and facilitate an in-person workshop on the NOAA WRC in Seattle, WA. This event entitled “Shoreline Oil Spill Response Knowledge Gaps and Technological Development Opportunities” identified knowledge gaps and opportunities regarding technologies and scientific research associated with oil spill shoreline response. This effort included the exploration of the current state of the science of oil spill research associated with impacts of crude oil to shoreline environments and identified countermeasures and response alternatives that may …

Advancing Decarbonization In Regulated Multifamily Affordable Housing: Key Federal Levers To Achieve Meaningful Change, Housing Sustainability Advisors, Eric Hangen

Carsey Publications

Decarbonizing affordable rental housing is critical to mitigating climate change and meeting the Biden Administration’s target for a net-zero emissions national economy by 2050. It also offers numerous benefits, including energy cost savings, improved health and well-being, and economic opportunities. However, challenges related to upfront costs, tenant turnover, technical expertise, and policy support must be addressed to accelerate the market’s adoption of decarbonization. Collaboration between governments, policymakers, landlords, tenants, and industry experts is essential to overcome these challenges and achieve a sustainable and equitable future.

We are faced with a historic moment: the Inflation Reduction Act has provided $27 billion …
