High Child Care Costs Strain Nh Family Budgets, Tyrus Parker, Jess Carson Nov 2024

High Child Care Costs Strain Nh Family Budgets, Tyrus Parker, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

In the fourth primer of the Granite Guide to Early Childhood series, authors Tyrus Parker and Jess Carson report that, in 2023, the average price of full-time, center-based care for an infant and a four-year-old in New Hampshire was nearly $32,000 a year. Equivalent to 28 percent of median family income for New Hampshire households with children under 5, this is four times the 7 percent threshold that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has deemed affordable.

High costs can push care out of reach for the lowest-income families, perpetuating inequity. Perhaps the most important relief from high …

Migration Continues To Sustain Population Gains In Rural America, Kenneth M. Johnson Nov 2024

Migration Continues To Sustain Population Gains In Rural America, Kenneth M. Johnson

Carsey Publications

In this brief, author Kenneth Johnson reports that rural America is now gaining population again after a decade of loss. The recent rural population gain of 197,000 is striking given that pandemic-era deaths exceeded births in nonmetropolitan areas by a staggering 454,000 between April of 2020 and July of 2023, compared to a net natural loss (more deaths than births) of just 19,000 in the three years before the pandemic.

Even though rural America had an overall population gain between 2020 and 2023, just 45 percent of all rural counties gained population. Most of the recent nonmetropolitan population increase accrued …

Faculty Publications

The term “offshore” with regards to aquaculture has hitherto encompassed various perspectives, including technology, geographic location, legal jurisdiction, and more. To resolve the ambiguity in this term and understand its implications for current and future aquaculture development, “offshore” should be resolved into two separate metrics: distance from shore and energy exposure. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) distinguishes between internal waters, territorial sea, contiguous zone, exclusive economic zone (EEZ), and the high seas, but currently has no precise definition for “offshore” in its provisions, and therefore no applicable laws pertaining to “offshore” aquaculture. Regulating a …

Master Narratives Surrounding Rural Emerging Adult Migration: Resources For Postsecondary Decision-Making In Rural Communities, Cindy Hartman, Jayson Seaman, Andrew D. Coppens, Erin H. Sharp, Sarah Jusseaume

Faculty Publications

This study examined the cultural messages informing postsecondary decision-making processes surrounding emerging adult migration from/to a predominately rural state in the northeastern U.S. Utilizing an ecological approach to sampling, this study used 27 interviews and 5 focus groups of stakeholders working in educational, employment, and quality of life sectors. Narrative analysis yielded evidence of a predominant master narrative of migration as a developmental requirement during emerging adulthood. Stakeholders spoke of normative and prescriptive expectations that emerging adults particularly in rural areas orient their plans and decision-making around, including leaving their home communities for developmental reasons. Implications for emerging adult development …

Faculty Publications

Modern calcifying marine organisms face numerous environmental stressors, including overfishing, deoxygenation, increasing ocean temperatures, and ocean acidification (OA). Coastal marine settings are predicted to become warmer and more acidic in coming decades, heightening the risks of extreme events such as marine heat waves. Given these threats, it is important to understand the vulnerabilities of marine organisms that construct their shells from calcium carbonate, which are particularly susceptible to warming and decreasing pH levels. To investigate the response of four commercially relevant bivalve species to OA and differing temperatures, juvenile Mercenaria mercenaria (hard shell clams), juvenile Mya arenaria (soft shell clams), …

Faculty Publications

Aquaculture in exposed and/or distant ocean sites is an emerging industry and field of study that addresses the need to improve food security along with the challenges posed by expansion of urban and coastal stakeholders into nearshore and sheltered marine waters. This move necessitates innovative solutions for this industry to thrive in high-energy environments. Some innovative research has increased understanding of the physics, hydrodynamics, and structural requirements enabling the development of appropriate systems. The blue mussel (Mytilus edulis), the New Zealand green shell or green lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus), and the Pacific Oyster (Magallana gigas), are the primary targets for …

Conducting Structure-From-Motion (Sfm) Modeling Of Freshwater Environments Using Unpiloted Aerial Systems (Uas): Challenges And Lessons Learned, Benjamin T. Fraser, Christine L. Bunyon, Russell G. Congalton

Faculty Publications

The pairing of Unpiloted Aerial Systems (UAS) and Structure from Motion (SfM) has provided new capabilities for modeling freshwater environments. Applications of UAS-SfM range from water quality monitoring to the mapping of aquatic vegetation. The models produced provide users with the ability to analyze features at ultra-high-resolutions and across scales not easily achieved through in situ sampling. Despite the demonstrated benefits of UAS-SfM in freshwater and other natural resource disciplines, there remain fundamental technical challenges in the modeling of environments with homogenous surfaces (e.g., water). In this research, the effectiveness of several image collection and processing approaches for the modelling …

New Hampshire's Well Educated, Underpaid Child Care Workforce, Rebecca Glauber, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

In this primer, authors Rebecca Glauber and Jess Carson discuss New Hampshire’s child care workforce. They report that New Hampshire child care workers are more likely than other workers to have at least some college experience, but they earn far less. Annual earnings among full-time child care workers are just $32,310, about half those of other workers in the state. Although child care and early educators express high job satisfaction, the field is subject to turnover and short staffing as workers seek opportunities that better match their education and the cost of living in New Hampshire. They conclude that continued …
