Feminism In The Anti-Nuclear Movement: Three Women's Quest To Re-Make Society, Sarah Doenmez May 2024

Feminism In The Anti-Nuclear Movement: Three Women's Quest To Re-Make Society, Sarah Doenmez

Master's Theses and Capstones

In the 40 years between 1974 and 2014, the anti-nuclear movement arose in New England, shook the dominant political forces, changed the culture, and achieved significant victories. Although they are usually not recognized as the power behind anti-nuclear and environmental activism, in fact, I contend that a certain group of women motivated by a second wave ecofeminist vision of peace were and have remained the core of this work in New England. Their fight against patriarchal systems shaping their individual lives extended to a larger commitment to build communities and imbue institutions with a new value system that would nurture …

Filling The Bathymetric Gaps: Toward Quantifying And Characterizing Uncertainty In Interpolated Bathymetry, Elias Opeyemi Adediran May 2024

Filling The Bathymetric Gaps: Toward Quantifying And Characterizing Uncertainty In Interpolated Bathymetry, Elias Opeyemi Adediran

Master's Theses and Capstones

The oceans remain one of Earth's most enigmatic frontiers, with approximately 75% of the world's oceans still unmapped to modern standards. To overcome this, interpolation serves as the primary method for creating seamless coverage from incomplete coverage hydrographic data sets and is essential for creating a seamless digital bathymetric model (DBM) compiled from sparse bathymetric datasets and set-line spacing surveys. While methods for quantifying the uncertainty in depth measurements are well-researched, interpolation introduces unqualified depth uncertainties. This study aims to estimate and characterize these uncertainties which are essential to nautical charting, and navigational safety, and important in many other fields.Organized …

Exploring The Role Of Recreation In Rural Nh Youth's Engagement With Master Narratives, Katelyn A. Moscouver May 2024

Exploring The Role Of Recreation In Rural Nh Youth's Engagement With Master Narratives, Katelyn A. Moscouver

Master's Theses and Capstones

Rural youth often feel compelled to leave their home communities to seek new opportunities, especially at the secondary-postsecondary educational transition. These decisions are driven in part by perceived developmental imperatives to leave rural hometowns given messages that success is best achieved elsewhere. The present study used the framework of identity master narratives to explore recreation's role in facilitating youth postsecondary planning in rural northeastern state of New Hampshire. The study extends and deepens prior research seeking to understand some of the structural-psychological factors connecting recreation involvement in adolescence, postsecondary decision making, and broader demographic patterns among the 15-19 and 20-24 …

The Microbial Diversity In The Spruce Hole Aquifer Associated With Artificial Recharge Practices, Rafaela Paes De Souza Barbosa

Master's Theses and Capstones

Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) Systems are utilized globally for underground water storage and subsequent retrieval, serving as a key water management strategy. In Durham, NH, an ASR system was established in the Spruce Hole formation to address various water supply needs, including meeting future demand, reducing treatment costs, and providing backup supply options. This system replenishes the aquifer using water from the Lamprey River. Given the importance of microbial communities in groundwater quality, understanding their composition is crucial. This study explores the microbial diversity in the Spruce Hole aquifer, comparing it to the surface water used for recharge and …

The Influence Of Lake Productivity On Methane Production And Ebullition From Temperate And Arctic Lake Sediments, Megan Wimsatt May 2024

The Influence Of Lake Productivity On Methane Production And Ebullition From Temperate And Arctic Lake Sediments, Megan Wimsatt

Master's Theses and Capstones

Northern freshwater lakes (> 40°N) are an increasingly recognized major contributor of methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas, to the atmosphere. Climate warming and eutrophication acceleration threaten to increase CH4 emissions from these lake ecosystems, particularly in littoral (shallow lake edge) zones where ebullition (bubbling) is often a dominant flux pathway. Few studies have investigated the impacts of lake productivity on limnological CH4 cycling for a range of trophic classes and provided a comparison between different latitudes. Here, we analyzed chlorophyll α (chlα; proxy for lake productivity), other water quality parameters, sediment CH4 production rates, and ebullition rates at nine …

Assessing Visitor Preferences For Reservation Systems In Parks And Protected Areas: Insights From The Green Mountain National Forest, Ridgley Jordan Ward

Master's Theses and Capstones

The use of reservation systems in parks and protected areas has recently increased across the United States, influenced by factors such as carrying capacity and social distancing measures during COVID-19. This study employs stated choice modeling to examine visitor preferences for reservation systems at the Green Mountain National Forest in Vermont, USA, using a combined mail-back and online survey approach (n=629) during the summer of 2023. Our analysis focused on several key factors: ecological integrity, permit acquisition, crowding, parking wait times, and price. Findings reveal that ecological impacts, such as visible signs of litter or vegetative damage, significantly influenced visitor …

Direct Precipitation Of Siderite In Ferruginous Environments, A Grengs, G Ledesma, Y Xiong, S Katsev, S W. Poulton, E D. Swanner, C Wittkop

Faculty Publications

Siderite (FeCO 3 ) is often assumed to precipitate from dissimilatory reduction of Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides, but geochemical and mineralogical analyses from ferruginous (anoxic, Fe-rich) Canyon Lake, USA, suggest Fe-carbonate represents a direct early precipitate unrelated to substantial oxide burial.X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy of sediment trap materials and an anoxic sediment core indicated a mixture of Fe(II) and Fe(III) in water column particulates and ferruginous surface sediments, while all Mn phases were reduced.About 60 cm below the sediment-water interface, Fe-Mn carbonates were detected by X-ray diffraction and XANES, while Fe extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra were best …

Notes From The Past Show How Local Variability Can Stymie Urchins And The Rise Of The Reds In The Gulf Of Maine, Jarrett E. K. Byrnes, Andrea Brown, Kate Sheridan, Tianna Peller, Jake Lawlor, Julien Beaulieu, Jenny Munoz

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The impacts of global change—from shifts in climate to overfishing to land use change—can depend heavily on local abiotic context. Building an understanding of how to downscale global change scenarios to local impacts is often difficult, however, and requires historical data across large gradients of variability. Such data are often not available—particularly in peer reviewed or gray literature. However, these data can sometimes be gleaned from casual records of natural history—field notebooks, data sheet marginalia, course notes, and more. Here, we provide an example of one such approach for the Gulf of Maine, as we seek to understand how environmental …

Universal Design For Learning (Udl)- Strategies For Engaging Rural Youth Co-Researchers With Informal Stem Learning, Amanda Bastoni, Jayson Seaman, Andrew D. Coppens, Cindy Hartman, Kate Moscouver, Courtnie Lachaine

Faculty Publications

This article describes methods and findings from a study focused on youth living in rural communities in northern New Hampshire who struggle with accessing STEM learning opportunities for reasons including economic underinvestment and geographical isolation. These challenges also negatively impact researchers hoping to learn how rural youth benefit from informal STEM learning experiences, which contribute to low-project participation and retention rates. As in other amenity-rich rural areas, the communities in this study are promoting outdoor recreation as a vehicle for economic development. We wanted to understand if outdoor recreation activities tied to economic growth initiatives — activities which youth have …

Influence Of Climate Zone Shifts On Forest Ecosystems In Northeastern United States And Maritime Canada, Samuel Roy, Xinyuan Wei, Aaron Weiskittel, Daniel J. Hayes, Peter Nelson, Alexandra R. Contosta

Faculty Publications

Climate zones play a significant role in shaping the forest ecosystems located within them by influencing multiple ecological processes, including growth, disturbances, and species interactions. Therefore, delineation of current and future climate zones is essential to establish a framework for understanding and predicting shifts in forest ecosystems. In this study, we developed and applied an efficient approach to delineate regional climate zones in the northeastern United States and maritime Canada, aiming to characterize potential shifts in climate zones and discuss associated changes in forest ecosystems. The approach comprised five steps: climate data dimensionality reduction, sampling scenario design, cluster generation, climate …

Salt Marsh Migration Into Coastal Uplands And Application For Conservation In New Hampshire, Grant Mckown, David Burdick Mar 2024

Salt Marsh Migration Into Coastal Uplands And Application For Conservation In New Hampshire, Grant Mckown, David Burdick

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

Salt marshes across the East Coast, including New Hampshire, have lost considerable areas of vegetation cover from shoreline erosion and interior pool formation as sea level rise outpaces the marsh’s ability to maintain elevation. Marsh migration, or the inland transgression of halophyte vegetation into upland habitats, is one of the main mechanisms for salt marshes to maintain their areal extent on centennial timescales and recently has been a key strategy discussed by resource managers for shorter term timescales. A literature review was conducted to determine the extent of the research on the topic including biogeochemical drivers, response of the vegetation …

An estimated 6 million children under the age of five in Nigeria (out of nearly 31 million) risk not reaching their full developmental potential. The dearth of context-relevant measures poses a challenge to the planning and implementation of effective interventions. This study assesses the utility of the Early Childhood Development Index (ECDI) in Nigeria. We used the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys to track progress among 3- to 4-year-old children (n = 11,073); 3-year-old, 51%; female, 49%. Using random calibration samples, the results from psychometric tests indicate that while over half of the children were on track in their development based …

Escalating Uncertainties Require Institutional Transformation To Support Epistemological Pluralism, Jennifer F. Brewer, Holly M. Hapke

Faculty Publications

As marine conservation challenges intensify with accelerating anthropogenic change, informing public deliberation about difficult trade-offs requires commitment to epistemological pluralism. Robust integration of social sciences can improve the realism of policy debates by explicating a range of potential social-ecological outcomes. Funders have long incentivized interdisciplinarity, yet progress is insufficient and embedded in a political economy of knowledge production. Failure to substantively address inequities can stymie collaboration. Institutional expectations for promotion and tenure rarely recognize the extent to which deep engagement transforms epistemological norms and scholarly outputs. Several organizations and programs offer relevant experience and resources. Senior scholars can use their …

Social Infrastructure And Health Among Mid-Life And Older Adults In Rural America: An Environmental Scan Of Existing Data, Danielle Rhubart, Megan Henly, M. Aaron Guest, Carrie Henning-Smith, Mary Anne Powell

Institute on Disability

Growing evidence shows a relationship between social infrastructure (SI) – the physical places where people gather outside of home and work – and health. However, existing data sources for rigorously investigating this relationship are limited, especially for rural areas. Therefore, we conducted an environmental scan of existing data for furthering research on this topic, with a focus on the rural United States (U.S.). A total of 10 datasets met inclusion criteria. Key information was collated from websites and reviewed by data administrators. We summarize key features of these datasets, including available measures of geography/rurality, SI availability and utilization, and physical, …

Sub-L1 monitors are currently being researched in mission concepts for small satellites and may be deployed on distant retrograde orbits around the Earth in the future. Depending on the location of the sub-L1 monitor, the lead time for the arrival of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and for determining their geo-effectiveness could be prolonged. If the sub-L1 monitor was to orbit the Earth at a distance of 0.05 AU, as is proposed for the MIIST mission, for example, Dst predictions could be made up to 5 hours in advance. The close encounter of STEREO-A and Wind from April 2023 to November …

In-situ measurements from the Sun-Earth Lagrangian L1 point typically provide a 20-minute to 1-hour advanced warning of incoming interplanetary (IP) shocks, magnetic clouds before impact at the nose of Earth's magnetopause. Sub-L1 monitors may provide measurements sunward of the L1 point to improve the lead times for such transients to several hours, and various mission architecture have been proposed for more than 25 years. Because CMEs and shocks do not propagate exactly radially, the location of such a monitor with respect to the Sun-Earth line is a key parameter to take into account when designing such missions. Here, we highlight …
