Spatially Explicit Data: Stewardship And Ethical Challenges In Science, Joel N. Hartter, Sadie J. Ryan, Catrina A. Mackenzie, John N. Parker, Carly A. Strasser

Geography

Scholarly communication is at an unprecedented turning point created in part by the increasing saliency of data stewardship and data sharing. Formal data management plans represent a new emphasis in research, enabling access to data at higher volumes and more quickly, and the potential for replication and augmentation of existing research. Data sharing has recently transformed the practice, scope, content, and applicability of research in several disciplines, in particular in relation to spatially specific data. This lends exciting potentiality, but the most effective ways in which to implement such changes, particularly for disciplines involving human subjects and other sensitive information, …

Beyond Peak Reservoir Storage? A Global Estimate Of Declining Water Storage Capacity In Large Reservoirs, Dominik Wisser, Steve Frolking, Stephen Hagen, Marc F. P. Bierkens Sep 2013

Beyond Peak Reservoir Storage? A Global Estimate Of Declining Water Storage Capacity In Large Reservoirs, Dominik Wisser, Steve Frolking, Stephen Hagen, Marc F. P. Bierkens

Earth Sciences

Water storage is an important way to cope with temporal variation in water supply and demand. The storage capacity and the lifetime of water storage reservoirs can be significantly reduced by the inflow of sediments. A global, spatially explicit assessment of reservoir storage loss in conjunction with vulnerability to storage loss has not been done. We estimated the loss in reservoir capacity for a global data set of large reservoirs from 1901 to 2010, using modeled sediment flux data. We use spatially explicit population data sets as a proxy for storage demand and calculate storage capacity for all river basins …

Vegetation Response To Extreme Climate Events On The Mongolian Plateau From 2000 To 2010, Ranjeet John, Jiquan Chen, Zu-Tao Ou-Yang, Jingfeng Xiao, Richard Becker, Arindam Samanta, Sangram Ganguly, Wenping Yuan, Ochirbat Batkhishig Aug 2013

Vegetation Response To Extreme Climate Events On The Mongolian Plateau From 2000 To 2010, Ranjeet John, Jiquan Chen, Zu-Tao Ou-Yang, Jingfeng Xiao, Richard Becker, Arindam Samanta, Sangram Ganguly, Wenping Yuan, Ochirbat Batkhishig

All Materials

Climate change has led to more frequent extreme winters (aka, dzud) and summer droughts on the Mongolian Plateau during the last decade. Among these events, the 2000–2002 combined summer drought–dzud and 2010 dzud were the most severe on vegetation. We examined the vegetation response to these extremes through the past decade across the Mongolian Plateau as compared to decadal means. We first assessed the severity and extent of drought using the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation data and the Palmer drought severity index (PDSI). We then examined the effects of drought by mapping anomalies in vegetation indices (EVI, EVI2) …

The Use Of Forest Stand Age Information In An Atmospheric Co2 Inversion Applied To North America, Feng Deng, Jing M. Chen, Y. Pan, W. Peters, R. Birdsey, K. Mccullough, Jingfeng Xiao Aug 2013

The Use Of Forest Stand Age Information In An Atmospheric Co2 Inversion Applied To North America, Feng Deng, Jing M. Chen, Y. Pan, W. Peters, R. Birdsey, K. Mccullough, Jingfeng Xiao

All Materials

Atmospheric inversions have become an important tool in quantifying carbon dioxide (CO2) sinks and sources at a variety of spatiotemporal scales, but associated large uncertainties restrain the inversion research community from reaching agreement on many important subjects. We enhanced an atmospheric inversion of the CO2 flux for North America by introducing spatially explicit information on forest stand age for US and Canada as an additional constraint, since forest carbon dynamics are closely related to time since disturbance. To use stand age information in the inversion, we converted stand age into an age factor, and included the covariances between subcontinental regions …

Arctic Warming And Your Weather: Public Belief In The Connection, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Mary D. Lemcke-Stampone Jul 2013

Arctic Warming And Your Weather: Public Belief In The Connection, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Mary D. Lemcke-Stampone

Sociology

Will Arctic warming affect mid-latitude weather? Many researchers think so, and have addressed this question through scientific articles and news media. Much of the public accepts such a connection as well. Across three New Hampshire surveys with more than 1500 interviews, 60% of respondents say they think future Arctic warming would have major effects on their weather. Arctic/weather responses changed little after Superstorm Sandy brushed the region, but exhibit consistently strong partisan divisions that grow wider with education. Belief in an Arctic/weather connection also varies, in a nonlinear pattern, with the temperature anomaly around day of interview. Interviewed on unseasonably …

Humans have dramatically altered nutrient cycles at local to global scales. We examined changes in anthropogenic nutrient inputs to the northeastern United States (NE) from 1930 to 2000. We created a comprehensive time series of anthropogenic N and P inputs to 437 counties in the NE at 5 year intervals. Inputs included atmospheric N deposition, biological N2 fixation, fertilizer, detergent P, livestock feed, and human food. Exports included exports of feed and food and volatilization of ammonia. N inputs to the NE increased throughout the study period, primarily due to increases in atmospheric deposition and fertilizer. P inputs increased until …

A Global Fingerprint Of Macro-Scale Changes In Urban Structure From 1999 To 2009, Steve Frolking, Tom Milliman, Karen C. Seto, Mark A. Friedl Apr 2013

A Global Fingerprint Of Macro-Scale Changes In Urban Structure From 1999 To 2009, Steve Frolking, Tom Milliman, Karen C. Seto, Mark A. Friedl

Earth Sciences

Urban population now exceeds rural population globally, and 60–80% of global energy consumption by households, businesses, transportation, and industry occurs in urban areas. There is growing evidence that built-up infrastructure contributes to carbon emissions inertia, and that investments in infrastructure today have delayed climate cost in the future. Although the United Nations statistics include data on urban population by country and select urban agglomerations, there are no empirical data on built-up infrastructure for a large sample of cities. Here we present the first study to examine changes in the structure of the world's largest cities from 1999 to 2009. Combining …

The Black Diamonds Of Bahia (Carbonados) And The Building Of Euro-America: A Half-Century Supply Monopoly (1880s-1930s), Marc W. Herold Apr 2013

The Black Diamonds Of Bahia (Carbonados) And The Building Of Euro-America: A Half-Century Supply Monopoly (1880s-1930s), Marc W. Herold

Economics

This paper traces the birth, maturity and decline of what was Bahia’s natural supply monopoly of black or industrial diamonds: first used in polishing materials (for consumption); then in drilling; and by 1940 they were employed in making parts for the Third Reich’s premier fighter plane, the Messerschmitt bF 109. The evolution in the way these stones were produced, the agents involved in production and distribution, and how the income was distributed along the commodity chain are examined. The importance of technological change is documented with the huge boost in demand for industrial diamonds when the Leschot diamond-head drill was …

Blowin' In The Wind: Short-Term Weather And Belief In Anthropogenic Climate Change., Lawrence C. Hamilton, Mary D. Stampone

Sociology

Abstract

A series of polls provides new tests for how weather influences public beliefs about climate change. Statewide data from 5000 random-sample telephone interviews conducted on 99 days over 2.5 yr (2010-12) are merged with temperature and precipitation indicators derived from U.S. Historical Climatology Network (USHCN) station records. The surveys carry a question designed around scientific consensus statements that climate change is happening now, caused mainly by human activities. Alternatively, respondents can state that climate change is not happening, or that it is happening but mainly for natural reasons. Belief that humans are changing the climate is predicted by temperature …

Perception Of Disease Risk And Vulnerability As A Function Of Proximity To National Park Boundaries In East Africa, Irene Bridget Feretti Apr 2013

Perception Of Disease Risk And Vulnerability As A Function Of Proximity To National Park Boundaries In East Africa, Irene Bridget Feretti

Honors Theses and Capstones

Studies suggest households closest to parks and protected areas (PAs) are more likely to sustain park-related losses, but the relationship between human sickness and PAs has not been fully explored. Existing literature primarily focuses on human-wildlife conflicts (i.e. crop raiding) and the potential for zoonotic disease spillover and emergence at the human-livestock-wildlife interface at PA boundaries. Understanding local perceptions of disease risk and vulnerability is essential for assessing human health relative to conservation areas. This understanding will promote better-informed consideration of human health impacts in decision making for conservation. Data from surveys taken at 301 households around Kibale National Park …

Sobol' Sensitivity Analysis Of The Holocene Peat Model: What Drives Carbon Accumulation In Peatlands?, Anne Quillet, Michelle Garneau, Steve Frolking

Earth Sciences

Understanding the development of northern peatlands and their carbon accumulation dynamics is crucial in order to confidently integrate northern peatlands into global carbon cycle models. To achieve this, northern peatland models are becoming increasingly complex and now include feedback processes between peat depth, decomposition, hydrology, and vegetation composition and productivity. Here we present results from a global sensitivity analysis performed to assess the behavior and parameter interaction of a peatland simulation model. A series of simulations of the Holocene Peat Model were performed with different parameter combinations in order to assess the role of parameter interactions on the simulated total …

Evidence For Elevated Emissions From High-Latitude Wetlands Contributing To High Atmospheric Ch4 Concentration In The Early Holocene, Zicheng Yu, Julie Loisel, Merritt R. Turetsky, Shanshan Cai, Yan Zhao, Steve Frolking, Glenn M. Macdonald, Jill L. Bubier Mar 2013

Evidence For Elevated Emissions From High-Latitude Wetlands Contributing To High Atmospheric Ch4 Concentration In The Early Holocene, Zicheng Yu, Julie Loisel, Merritt R. Turetsky, Shanshan Cai, Yan Zhao, Steve Frolking, Glenn M. Macdonald, Jill L. Bubier

Earth Sciences

The major increase in atmospheric methane (CH4) concentration during the last glacial-interglacial transition provides a useful example for understanding the interactions and feedbacks among Earth's climate, biosphere carbon cycling, and atmospheric chemistry. However, the causes of CH4 doubling during the last deglaciation are still uncertain and debated. Although the ice-core data consistently suggest a dominant contribution from northern high-latitude wetlands in the early Holocene, identifying the actual sources from the ground-based data has been elusive. Here we present data syntheses and a case study from Alaska to demonstrate the importance of northern wetlands in contributing to high …

County-Specific Net Migration By Five-Year Age Groups, Hispanic Origin, Race And Sex 2000-2010, Richelle Winkler, Kenneth M. Johnson, Cheng Cheng, Paul R. Voss, Katherine J. Curtis

Sociology

This report documents the methodology used to prepare county-level, net migration estimates by five-year age cohorts and sex, and by race and Hispanic origin, for the intercensal period from 2000 to 2010. The estimates were prepared using a vital statistics version of the forward cohort residual method (Siegel and Hamilton 1952) following the techniques used to prepare the 1990 to 2000 net migration estimates (Voss, McNiven, Johnson, Hammer, and Fuguitt 2004) as described in detail below. These numbers (and the net migration rates derivable from them) extend the set of decennial estimates of net migration that have been produced following …

Affixing The Service Mark: Reconsidering The Rise Of An Oxymoron, Peter J. Karol Jan 2013

Affixing The Service Mark: Reconsidering The Rise Of An Oxymoron, Peter J. Karol

Law Faculty Scholarship

This article explores the deep and to date unacknowledged contradictions underlying service marks (trademarks used in connection with services rather than goods). Namely, the Lanham Act statutorily mandates treating trademarks the “same” as service marks; yet it simultaneously loosens requirements for proving service mark “use” by allowing mere advertising to substantiate service mark rights. This shortcut is not permitted with trademarks as such. As a result of this imbalance, sophisticated trademark practitioners may now quickly secure vast service mark rights for clients in ways not available for trademarks.

To better understand current service mark practice, and the above contradictions, the …
