First In The Nation: New Hampshire's Changing Electorate, Kenneth M. Johnson, Dante J. Scala, Andrew Smith Jan 2016

First In The Nation: New Hampshire's Changing Electorate, Kenneth M. Johnson, Dante J. Scala, Andrew Smith

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Ken Johnson, Dante Scala, and Andrew Smith discuss demographic forces that are reshaping the New Hampshire landscape. They report that the voting population of New Hampshire is among the most mobile in the United States. More than 30 percent of the potential voters are new to the state’s electoral process since 2008. These younger voters and recent migrants have the potential to change the political landscape of the state in the coming presidential primary and November election. The new young voters tend to be more liberal than their older contemporaries. These younger voters also identify less …

If It’S Broke, Fix It: Fixing Fixation, Megan M. Carpenter Jan 2016

If It’S Broke, Fix It: Fixing Fixation, Megan M. Carpenter

Law Faculty Scholarship

The fixation requirement, once an intended instrument for added flexibility in copyrightability, has become an unworkable standard under modern copyright law. The last twenty-five years have witnessed a dramatic expansion in creative media. Developments in both digital media and contemporary art have challenged what it means to be fixed, and cases dealing with these works reveal how inapposite current interpretations of fixation are for these forms of expression. Yet, getting fixation “right” is important, for it is often the juridical threshold over which idea becomes expression. Thus, we must enable fixation to help define the parameters of creative expression while …

Can Continental Bogs With Stand The Pressure Due To Climate Change?, Nigel T. Roulet, E R. Humphreys, Jianghua Wu, Steve Frolking, Julie Talbot, P M. Lafleur, Tim Moore Jan 2016

Can Continental Bogs With Stand The Pressure Due To Climate Change?, Nigel T. Roulet, E R. Humphreys, Jianghua Wu, Steve Frolking, Julie Talbot, P M. Lafleur, Tim Moore

Earth Sciences

Not all peatlands are alike. Theoretical and process based models suggest that ombrogenic, oligotrophic peatlands can withstand the pressures due to climate change because of the feedbacks among ecosystem production, decomposition and water storage. Although there have been many inductive explanations inferring from paleo-records, there is a lack of deductive empirical tests of the models predictions of these systems’ stability and there are few records of the changes in the net ecosystem carbon balance (NECB) of peatlands that are long enough to examine the dynamics of the NECB in relation to climate variability. Continuous measurements of all the components of …

The Swift Water Place: Water Quality, Fish Ecology, And Hydropower In The Merrimack River Since The Time Of Thoreau, Timothy Melia Jan 2016

The Swift Water Place: Water Quality, Fish Ecology, And Hydropower In The Merrimack River Since The Time Of Thoreau, Timothy Melia

Doctoral Dissertations

The Merrimack River and its landscape reflect the priorities that have shaped the stream for two centuries. When Henry David Thoreau and his brother John put their dory into the Merrimack in September of 1839, they were paddling into a landscape that was shifting towards water-powered industries and mill cities. The legal transformation of water and the completion of the Great Stone Dam at Lawrence in 1847 spelled the end of the anadromous fish runs that had populated the Merrimack for centuries. Salmon restoration proceeded for three decades after the Civil War until fish passage failed. Later, water filtration plants …

Computationally Efficient Specifications Of Spatial Point Process Models And Spatio-Temporal Gaussian Models: Combining Remote Sensing Drivers With Geospatial Disease Case Data To Enhance Geographic Epidemiology, Beth Louise Ziniti Jan 2016

Computationally Efficient Specifications Of Spatial Point Process Models And Spatio-Temporal Gaussian Models: Combining Remote Sensing Drivers With Geospatial Disease Case Data To Enhance Geographic Epidemiology, Beth Louise Ziniti

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, the flexibility of Bayesian hierarchical models specified using a latent Gaussian Markov Random Field (GMRF) are evaluated for use in analyzing large complex spatial and spatio-temporal data with the goal of contributing to an interdisciplinary effort of developing an eco-epidemiological model that quantifies the relationship between remotely sensed water quality and the incidence of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s Disease) over large areas such as Northern New England (NNE).

In particular, a Log-Gaussian Cox Process (LGCP) specified by the logarithm of a GMRF on a regular lattice is shown to allow for simultaneous estimation of …

Attached Algae As An Indicator Of Water Quality: A Study Of The Viability Of Genomic Taxonomic Methods, Allison R. Wood Jan 2016

Attached Algae As An Indicator Of Water Quality: A Study Of The Viability Of Genomic Taxonomic Methods, Allison R. Wood

Honors Theses and Capstones

This research involved evaluating algae as an indicator of water quality in New Hampshire's rivers, with a focus on the Great Bay Estuary. The project had three main goals. First, determining whether or not algae would work as an indicator of water quality in the great bay ecosystem, an environment where tidal currents are strong and water composition is mixed. The second goal was to compare traditional microscopic methods of taxonomy with emerging genomic methods, increasing the economic viability of attached algae monitoring. The third project goal, still underway, is to evaluate massive amounts of genomic data from the Great …

Players, Consumers And Creators: Literacy Orientations Among Adolescents Attending A Small, Rural School, Christina Marie Robison Jan 2016

Players, Consumers And Creators: Literacy Orientations Among Adolescents Attending A Small, Rural School, Christina Marie Robison

Doctoral Dissertations

This phenomenological study identifies three distinct literacy orientations among ten eighth and ninth grade students who attend a small, rural school in Northern New England: Game Players, Critical Consumers, and Aspirational Creators. In order to understand ongoing challenges for rural students in post-secondary life, students’ literacy practices, values and beliefs are examined within the context of students’ lived experiences and analyzed through the lens of literacy sponsorship. Their literacy practices, which are superficially uniform, are shown to have varying significance depending upon their literacy orientations. These underlying philosophies represent the purpose students perceive their literacy practices serve: to further their …

Developing A Chronology For Thinning Of The Laurentide Ice Sheet In New Hampshire During The Last Deglaciation, Taylor Hodgdon Jan 2016

Developing A Chronology For Thinning Of The Laurentide Ice Sheet In New Hampshire During The Last Deglaciation, Taylor Hodgdon

Master's Theses and Capstones

Well-constrained ages for the retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) have been developed at key sites throughout New England, providing a framework for the deglacial history of the region. Previous work has focused primarily on documenting retreat of the ice sheet margin, but few studies have attempted to reconstruct changes in ice sheet geometry and flow patterns during its recession. This study provides the first direct age control on the thinning of the LIS in central and southern New Hampshire during the last deglaciation. In situ cosmogenic 10Be exposure ages were developed from four glaciated summits, in order to …

The Politics Of Fresh Water: Setting The Stage, Tamar Mayer, Catherine M. Ashcraft Jan 2016

The Politics Of Fresh Water: Setting The Stage, Tamar Mayer, Catherine M. Ashcraft

Faculty Publications

This chapter identifies insights into the politics of fresh water and introduces the contributions to the book The Politics of Fresh Water: Access, conflict and identity. First, the social, physical, and ecological components of water systems are interconnected, forming a hydro-social system. Second, instead of being inevitable, freshwater crisis is a socially constructed experience, a lived phenomenon. Water scarcity is not simply the result of what nature has to offer but always involves power relations and political decisions. The water crisis is not only about who is granted access to safe, clean water (when, where, and why), but also about …

Relating Shell Morphometrics And Heterozygosity To Byssogenesis, Byssal Thread Attachment Strength And Motility In The Blue Mussel, Ellie Daniels

Master's Theses and Capstones

Heterozygote deficiencies have been noted in both wild and farmed populations of Mytilus edulis Linnaeus 1758, yet the underlying causes for this deficit remain unclear. This is especially surprising considering that advantageous fitness traits (i.e., increased fecundity, reduced basal metabolism, higher growth rate in farmed mussels) as well as decreased mortality under environmental stressors (i.e., air exposure, increased water temperature) are positively correlated with heterozygosity in these mussels. The dislodgement hypothesis states that more heterozygous mussels are migrating to the periphery of a rope culture or mussel bed to gain an energetic advantage where they become more susceptible to drop-off. …

Queer Farmers: Sexuality And The Transition To Sustainable Agriculture, Isaac Leslie Jan 2016

Queer Farmers: Sexuality And The Transition To Sustainable Agriculture, Isaac Leslie

Master's Theses and Capstones

Intimate relationships are foundational to farm viability. Such relationships affect how farmers share tasks, earn income, and access land, yet the role of sexuality and heteronormativity in agriculture remains understudied. Furthermore, queers are largely ignored as potential farmers by the sustainable agriculture and LGBT movements. Through participant observation and interviews with 30 sustainable farmers of various genders and sexualities in New England, I document the lived experiences of queer sustainable farmers, an under-researched group, and examine whether sexuality and gender affects why they farm. Whereas the perception of rural heterosexism can discourage queer participation in agriculture, queer farmers faced less …

Assessing The Impact Of Industrial Oil Development, Human Population Growth, And Post-Conflict Regrowth In An African Biodiversity Hotspot, Nicholas Sean Dowhaniuk Jan 2016

Assessing The Impact Of Industrial Oil Development, Human Population Growth, And Post-Conflict Regrowth In An African Biodiversity Hotspot, Nicholas Sean Dowhaniuk

Master's Theses and Capstones

Understanding the drivers of human population growth and landscape fragmentation surrounding protected areas is vital to the success of conservation initiatives worldwide. However, the drivers of land cover change and population growth can be complex. While natural population growth is a primary cause of population growth in Africa, migration due to major anthropogenic events is increasingly common in Sub-Saharan Africa. Unprecedented mineral and oil extraction is currently occurring in Africa, often in areas of high conservation importance. Additionally, conflict often plays a large role in human migration through refugee resettlement, and many people in the region are now moving in …

Angel Groups: Developing A Regional Economic Development Strategy For Robust Seed Capital Ecosystems For Entrepreneurs, Kendre Esme Rodriguez Jan 2016

Angel Groups: Developing A Regional Economic Development Strategy For Robust Seed Capital Ecosystems For Entrepreneurs, Kendre Esme Rodriguez

Honors Theses and Capstones

The purpose of this paper is to identify the link between the success of angel organizational structures and the economic footprint within which angel groups operate; ultimately suggesting a novel approach of assisting traditional angel group structures in their operations and entrepreneurs in the process of securing early stage financing. Given the varied angel group structures that exist, some angel portals may be more appropriate for certain regions than others. In-depth field research was developed and analyzed by creating the first undergraduate student-run angel investment fund, to co-invest with investors in the informal venture capital market, in the United States. …

2014 Data Indicate That Four In Ten Children Live In Low-Income Families, Jess Carson, Andrew P. Schaefer, Marybeth J. Mattingly Dec 2015

2014 Data Indicate That Four In Ten Children Live In Low-Income Families, Jess Carson, Andrew P. Schaefer, Marybeth J. Mattingly

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Jessica Carson, Andrew Schaefer, and Marybeth Mattingly use American Community Survey data to explore child poverty rates across the United States by region, state, and place type (rural, suburban, and city). They also examine data on children who are deeply poor (those in families with incomes below half of the poverty line), as well as low-income children (those in families with incomes less than twice the poverty line). They report that in 2014, more than four in ten children (44.1 percent) lived in low-income families. More than one-fifth of children (21.7 percent) were poor, and nearly …

Reconnaissance Surveying Using Satellite-Derived Bathymetry, Shachak Pe'eri, Patrick Keown, Michael Gonsalves

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

False Pass, AK, USA, is the eastern-most passage through the Aleutian Islands between the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean and provides a passage for small to mid-size vessels. The passage is considered an alternative route to Unimak Pass, AK for vessels from mainland Alaska and is estimated to be shorter by 160 to 240km. False Pass is closed every winter due to sea-ice cover that freezes the inlet system around OctoberNovember and melts only towards the spring (around March). As a result, the soft sediment of the seafloor contains mud and sand that may change the path of the …

Tracking Public Beliefs About Anthropogenic Climate Change, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Joel N. Hartter, Mary D. Lemcke-Stampone, David W. Moore, Thomas G. Safford

Sociology

A simple question about climate change, with one choice designed to match consensus statements by scientists, was asked on 35 US nationwide, single-state or regional surveys from 2010 to 2015. Analysis of these data (over 28,000 interviews) yields robust and exceptionally well replicated findings on public beliefs about anthropogenic climate change, including regional variations, change over time, demographic bases, and the interacting effects of respondent education and political views. We find that more than half of the US public accepts the scientific consensus that climate change is happening now, caused mainly by human activities. A sizable, politically opposite minority (about …
