Blogging: Promoting Learner Autonomy And Intercultural Competence Through Study Abroad, Lina Lee Oct 2011

Blogging: Promoting Learner Autonomy And Intercultural Competence Through Study Abroad, Lina Lee

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

The current study explores closely how using a combined modalities of asynchronous computer-mediated communication (CMC) via blogs and face-to-face (FTF) interaction through ethnographic interviews with native speakers (L1s) supports autonomous learning as the result of reflective and social processes. The study involves 16 American undergraduate students who participated in blogs to develop their intercultural competence over the course of one-semester study abroad. The results show that blogs afforded students the opportunity to work independently (e.g., content creation) and reflect upon cross-cultural issues. Critical reflection, however, relied on the teacher’s guidance and feedback, as most of the students were cognitively challenged …

Children's Exposure To Intimate Partner Violence And Other Family Violence., Sherry L. Hamby, David Finkelhor, Heather Turner, Richard Ormrod

Crimes Against Children Research Center

Explores in depth the survey results from the National Survey of Children's Exposure to Violence (NatSCEV) regarding exposure to family violence among children in the United States, including exposure to intimate partner violence, assaults by parents on siblings of children surveyed, and other assaults involving teen and adult household members. These results confirm that children are exposed to unacceptable rates of violence in the home. The bulletin presents information regarding the types of exposure to family violence, the gender of the perpetrator, the relationship of the child witness to the perpetrator, and youth's reactions to the incident. It also discusses …

“Above All Greek, Above All Roman Fame”: Classical Rhetoric In America During The Colonial And Early National Periods, James M. Farrell Sep 2011

“Above All Greek, Above All Roman Fame”: Classical Rhetoric In America During The Colonial And Early National Periods, James M. Farrell

Communication

The broad and profound influence of classical rhetoric in early America can be observed in both the academic study of that ancient discipline, and in the practical approaches to persuasion adopted by orators and writers in the colonial period, and during the early republic. Classical theoretical treatises on rhetoric enjoyed wide authority both in college curricula and in popular treatments of the art. Classical orators were imitated as models of republican virtue and oratorical style. Indeed, virtually every dimension of the political life of early Ameria bears the imprint of a classical conception of public discourse. This essay marks the …

A Method For Field Calibration Of A Multibeam Echo Sounder, Carlo Lanzoni, Thomas C. Weber Sep 2011

A Method For Field Calibration Of A Multibeam Echo Sounder, Carlo Lanzoni, Thomas C. Weber

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The use of multibeam echo sounders (MBES) has grown more frequent in applications like seafloor imaging, fisheries, and habitat mapping. Calibration of these instruments is important for understanding and validating the performance of MBES. For echo sounders in general, different calibration methodologies have been developed in controlled environments such as a fresh water tank and in the actual field of operation. While calibration in an indoor tank facility can bring excellent results in terms of accuracy, the amount of time required for a complete calibration can become prohibitively large. A field calibration can reveal the actual radiation beam pattern for …

No-Net-Loss Not Met For Nutrient Function In Freshwater Marshes: Recommendations For Wetland Mitigation Policies, Katie Hossler, Virginie Bouchard, M. Siobhan Fennessy, Serita D. Frey, Evelyn Anemaet, Ellen Herbert

Faculty Publications

Wetlands provide many important services throughout the world, with an estimated economic value that, in comparison to other ecosystems, far exceeds their relatively small global extent. In recognition of their importance, both national and international regulations exist to protect the world's remaining wetlands. Of growing interest is the “no-net-loss” policy which permits unavoidable destruction of wetlands if compensated by restoration of degraded wetlands or creation of new wetlands. The fundamental assumption of no-net-loss is that wetlands can be created which function equivalently to natural wetlands. One integral function that wetlands perform is cycling of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. Here we …

Alynna Lyon - Associate Professor Of Political Science Travels To Portugal, Alynna Lyon

Faculty Travel Reports

In 1996, Oporto, Portugal was classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The city is one of the oldest within Europe and displays the legacies of the once powerful Portuguese empire, the antiquities of Portuguese culture, as well as a modern urban lifestyle. With support from UNH’s Center of International Education, I traveled to Oporto in August 2011, to meet with a group of scholars from a variety of disciplines—political science, history, anthropology, English, sociology— and from around the world. The group is collaborating on a book (with the working title of Imaging Faith, Culture and Politics in the …

Remote Characterization Of Seafloor Adjacent To Shipwrecks Using Mosaicking And Analysis Of Backscatter Response, Giuseppe Masetti, Roberto Sacile, Andrea Trucco Jun 2011

Remote Characterization Of Seafloor Adjacent To Shipwrecks Using Mosaicking And Analysis Of Backscatter Response, Giuseppe Masetti, Roberto Sacile, Andrea Trucco

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The paper’s aim is to evaluate mosaicking and analysis of backscatter angular responses as adequate techniques to quickly characterize the seafloor adjacent to shipwrecks, extending the results of a limited number of grabs. Both techniques have been applied to the casestudy of the VLCC Haven shipwreck site, applying the approach known as Geocoder among the available methods. From these results, the development of the research activities will attempt to improve techniques and to generalize a methodological approach for the analysis of backscatter coming from an area of seafloor with the presence of one or more anthropic objects.

An Ecological Risk Model For Early Childhood Anxiety: The Importance Of Early Child Symptoms And Temperament, Nicholas D. Mian, Laurel Wainwright, Margaret J. Briggs-Gowan, Alice S. Carter May 2011

An Ecological Risk Model For Early Childhood Anxiety: The Importance Of Early Child Symptoms And Temperament, Nicholas D. Mian, Laurel Wainwright, Margaret J. Briggs-Gowan, Alice S. Carter

Life Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Childhood anxiety is impairing and associated with later emotional disorders. Studying risk factors for child anxiety may allow earlier identification of at-risk children for prevention efforts. This study applied an ecological risk model to address how early childhood anxiety symptoms, child temperament, maternal anxiety and depression symptoms, violence exposure, and sociodemographic risk factors predict school-aged anxiety symptoms. This longitudinal, prospective study was conducted in a representative birth cohort (n=1109). Structural equation modeling was used to examine hypothesized associations between risk factors measured in toddlerhood/preschool (age=3.0 years) and anxiety symptoms measured in kindergarten (age=6.0 years) and second grade (age= 8.0 years). …

From Trusted Confidant To Witness For The Prosecution: The Case Against The Recognition Of A Dangerous-Patient Exception To The Psychotherapist-Patient Privilege, Deborah Paruch May 2011

From Trusted Confidant To Witness For The Prosecution: The Case Against The Recognition Of A Dangerous-Patient Exception To The Psychotherapist-Patient Privilege, Deborah Paruch

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “In 1996, in Jaffee v. Redmond, the U.S. Supreme Court, pursuant to the authority set forth in Federal Rule of Evidence 501, recognized a psychotherapist-patient privilege in the federal courts. In doing so, the Court acknowledged the essential role that confidentiality plays in a therapist-patient relationship and also recognized the important role that psychotherapy plays in the mental health of the American citizenry. However, in dicta set out in a footnote near the conclusion of the opinion (footnote 19 of the opinion), the Court suggested that the privilege might not be absolute, that it might need to “give way …

London, Libel Capital No Longer? The Draft Defamation Act 2011 And The Future Of Libel Tourism, Thomas Sanchez May 2011

London, Libel Capital No Longer? The Draft Defamation Act 2011 And The Future Of Libel Tourism, Thomas Sanchez

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “In the past decade, London emerged as the forum of choice for “libel tourists”—strategic, often foreign, plaintiffs who bring defamation actions in a jurisdiction with plaintiff-friendly libel laws, even if they and the defamatory material at issue lack a substantial connection with that jurisdiction. England’s defamation laws and procedures make it significantly easier for claimants to commence and prevail in libel actions than do the laws and procedures of many other countries, particularly the United States. As a result, English courts have entertained several high-profile defamation cases involving foreign parties who have only tenuous connections to England, such as …
