Biological Sciences

Twenty-eight Holstein calves were blocked by birth date and randomly assigned to one of two treatments to investigate the effect of colostrum replacer (CR) feeding regimen on plasma volume (PV). Treatments were: 1) one feeding of CR (C1; 3L of reconstituted CR 675 g of powder providing 184.5 g of IgG at birth) or 2) two feedings of CR (C2; 2L of reconstituted CR at birth and 1 L of reconstituted CR at six h). By 6 h of age, all calves had received 3L of CR providing 184.5 g …

Deconstructing And Reconstructing Rights For Immigrant Children, Erin B. Corcoran Apr 2015

Deconstructing And Reconstructing Rights For Immigrant Children, Erin B. Corcoran

Law Faculty Scholarship

Children rights advocates and scholars alike continue to call for the development of innovative and alternative rights models, which specifically provide for an expansive conceptualization of children’s rights. Central to their calls for reform is a simultaneous recognition that children’s rights must embody agency – a child’s voice (a proxy for autonomy) – free from governmental interference, as well as the establishment of certain fundamental “needs” that place an affirmative obligation on the State to ensure the child has, and affirmatively provide, when necessary. Reimagining children’s rights also requires reforming our laws in such a way that reflects children as …

Do You "Park Your Car" Or "Pahk Your Cah''?: The Changing Dialect Of Southern New Hampshire, Melanie Platt Apr 2015

Do You "Park Your Car" Or "Pahk Your Cah''?: The Changing Dialect Of Southern New Hampshire, Melanie Platt

Inquiry Journal 2015

This article reports on a sociolinguistic study conducted in the summer of 2014 in which I interviewed native southern New Hampshire men and women, aged 18 to 89, listening for rhoticity (r variable) in their speech. I found that speakers younger than 60 years old are now exhibiting fully rhotic speech, which contrasts with the results of earlier studies.Possible motivations for the shift were also examined and compared with more recent studies on the r variable. I found in this study a correlation between the non-rhotic speech of many older speakers and small farming communities. The shift from non-rhotic to …

Higher Levels Of Confusion: Rocket Sensors In The Northern Lights, John Heavisides

Inquiry Journal 2015

In the summer of 2014 I spent nine weeks working with a team in the physics department of the University of Oslo in an attempt to determine if data from two sensors could be collected by one sensor. The two sensors, built by the University of New Hampshire and the University of Oslo, were part of the 2012 MICA rocket mission into the aurora borealis; they collected data on electron temperature and density respectively. Despite intense efforts, we were not successful in coming up with a relationship between the data sets of the two sensors. I learned that research often …

Taking A Deeper Look Into The Lives Of Disadvantaged Children Through Visual Content Analysis, Julianne Shimer Apr 2015

Taking A Deeper Look Into The Lives Of Disadvantaged Children Through Visual Content Analysis, Julianne Shimer

Inquiry Journal 2015

Asking children to draw a picture of family life is a simple and efficient way to assess their mental health.Children enjoy this activity and are more at ease as compared to filling out a questionnaire or having a formal interview. This past summer, I joined a research project in Ireland called the Healthy Schools Programme (HSP) that did just that. In total, 220 drawings of family life were collected from disadvantaged children aged eight to twelve years. The drawings gathered from this group were analyzed using a technique known as visual content analysis. This method involves examining drawings, pictures, or …

Effects Of Audible Human Disturbances On Koala (Phascolarctos Cinereus) Behavior In Queensland, Australia And Implications For Management, Galina Kinsella Apr 2015

Effects Of Audible Human Disturbances On Koala (Phascolarctos Cinereus) Behavior In Queensland, Australia And Implications For Management, Galina Kinsella

Inquiry Journal 2015

Koala populations are declining, and a contributing factor is stress, which can lead to greater susceptibility to disease. Koalas need about twenty hours of rest daily to remain healthy and unstressed. During the summer of 2014 I spent thirteen weeks with the Koala Research Center observing koalas’ responses to audible disturbances, principally those caused by humans. My two observation sites were Mt. Byron, a “disturbed” site with farm lands and pastures; and St. Bee’s Island, a protected national park, my “undisturbed” site. Using radio tracking equipment, I found and observed wild koalas, noting audible disturbances and the koalas’ reactions to …

Post-Conflict Peacebuilding In Bosnia‐Herzegovina, Hannah Waller Apr 2015

Post-Conflict Peacebuilding In Bosnia‐Herzegovina, Hannah Waller

Inquiry Journal 2015

During the summer of 2014, I lived in Sanski Most, Bosnia-Herzegovina, with funding from an International Research and Opportunities Program (IROP) grant from the Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research. Through a series of semi-structured interviews and participant observation, my research highlighted the roles of truth, memory, and justice in rebuilding a post-conflict society in Bosnia-Herzegovina―essentially, on peacebuilding since the war ended in 1995. The Bosnian War stands as the worst genocide since the Holocaust, with 350,000 casualties and over 100,000 dead―80% of whom were Muslim Bosniaks, targets of an ethnic cleansing campaign by neighboring Serbia. Of the interviews I conducted, …

International Collaboration In Physics Research: A Summer At Cern, Herbie Smith

Inquiry Journal 2015

During the summer of 2014, after my junior year as a physics major at the University of New Hampshire, I took part in a nine-week Research Experience for Undergraduates sponsored by the University of Michigan and the National Science Foundation. During the program, I lived and worked at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) just outside of Geneva,Switzerland. CERN is home to the largest particle collider in the world, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and is the world’s leading particle physics laboratory. As a summer student, I attended daily lectures on particle physics from leading experts in the field, …

Intersecting Communities, Interwoven Identities: Questioning Boundaries, Testing Bridges, And Forging A Queer Latinidad In The U.S. Southwest, Holly R. Cashman Mar 2015

Intersecting Communities, Interwoven Identities: Questioning Boundaries, Testing Bridges, And Forging A Queer Latinidad In The U.S. Southwest, Holly R. Cashman

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

This contribution to the special issue on ‘Languages in Contact, Cultures in Conflict: English and Spanish in the USA’ aims to investigate the concept of queer latinidad in Phoenix, Arizona in an attempt to understand how queer Latin@s in Phoenix see themselves in relation to Latino communities, queer communities, and a queer Latino community. While questioning received notions of ‘community,’ we look at how queer latinidad is constructed or rejected by queer Latinas/os in Phoenix at the dawn of the twenty-first century precisely as national attention has been focused on the state of Arizona, and how this negotiation might blur …

Economic Change And The Redistribution Of Power Among Women In Yemen: A Focus On The Treatment Of Domestic Workers, Molly Foye Mar 2015

Economic Change And The Redistribution Of Power Among Women In Yemen: A Focus On The Treatment Of Domestic Workers, Molly Foye

Spectrum

A shared female identity does not promise solidarity among women in capitalist society. Exploring the prejudices held by Yemeni women over domestic workers exposes class related inequities among women. Recent economic change in Yemen showcases the crystallization of class while local gender identities morph in accordance to overarching capitalist demands. The presence of marginalized domestic workers in upper-class Yemeni homes demonstrates the mutually informative relationship between class status and gender identity. Paralleling greater Yemeni hierarchical and patriarchal society, Yemeni women assert class privilege over low-income domestic workers. Of extreme relevance to better understanding gender and Islam, I argue that Yemeni …

Beyond Collective Efficacy: New Brief Measures To Assess The Outer Layers Of The Social Ecology, Lindsey T. Roberts, Sherry L. Hamby, Victoria L. Banyard, John Grych

Psychology

Abstract

Introduction: Community support can be a valuable interpersonal resource anywhere, yet past research has largely been focused on adults in urban neighborhoods. Because communities are no longer solely defined by a shared physicality, we offer psychometric data on three new measures to assess other communal resources: informal community support, support for community youth, and workplace integration.

Methods: Participants (N=1706) from a largely rural, low-income Southern region completed a computer-assisted questionnaire as part of a larger study on character development and personal strength. Ages range from 11 to 70 years old (M=29.3 years; SD=12.3 years); 63% of participants are female. …
