Design And Evaluation Of Processes For Fuel Fabrication, Georg F. Mauer Jan 2005

Design And Evaluation Of Processes For Fuel Fabrication, Georg F. Mauer

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

The goal of this research project was to provide technical support to process designers working on the development of the fuel cycles for transmutation applications. Detailed process models were developed to better define the impact of fuel choice on the transmuter fuel cycle, including relative process losses, waste generation, and plant capital cost. These process models provide insight regarding required plant size and number of plants needed to mesh with the fuel recycling line. They also determine requirements for automation.

Manufacturing models for large-scale production in a hot cell environment were also developed. Combined, these two models allow the assessment …

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

The goal of our project is to investigate interface corrosion processes in TRISO nuclear fuel particles. For this purpose, we are undertaking a detailed study of the interface formation between potential candidates for metallic fission products (Pd, Ag, and Cs), likely to diffuse from the kernel of the TRISO particles, with the TRISO coating layers. As a starting point, we are investigating the Pd/SiC interface and will extend our studies to Ag/SiC during our current summer research campaign. The experimental approach comprises the preparation of metal/SiC interfaces in-situ in our ultra-high vacuum system by electron-beam deposition. In order to understand …

Design Concepts And Process Analysis For Transmuter Fuel Manufacturing, Georg F. Mauer Jan 2005

Design Concepts And Process Analysis For Transmuter Fuel Manufacturing, Georg F. Mauer

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

The safe and effective manufacturing of actinide-bearing fuels for any transmutation strategy requires that the entire manufacturing process be contained within a shielded hot cell environment. To ensure that the fabrication process is feasible, the entire process must be designed for remote operation. The equipment must be reliable enough to perform over several decades, and also easy to maintain or repair remotely. The facility must also be designed to facilitate its own decontamination and decommissioning. In addition to these design factors, the potential viability of any fuel fabrication process will also be impacted by a number of variables, such as …

Paraeducator Training: An Investigation Of Current Practice And Related Needs, Brian D Saffle Jan 2005

Paraeducator Training: An Investigation Of Current Practice And Related Needs, Brian D Saffle

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Over the past two decades an increased number of paraeducators have been hired to work with special education teachers (French & Pickett, 1997, Stanovich, 1996). There has been a concurrent shift in paraeducator responsibilities. Instead of primarily providing clerical support, paraeducators are now expected to provide instructional support to the most challenging students in the system (i.e., those with disabilities) (Giangreco, Broer, Edelman, 1999). Numerous researchers, educators, and members of professional organizations have noted concerns about the training and/or lack thereof for paraeducators (French & Pickett, 1997). Debate exists regarding whether or not paraeducators possess adequate training and skills to …

Reliability Generalization Of The California Psychological Inventory, Helen Zaikina Jan 2005

Reliability Generalization Of The California Psychological Inventory, Helen Zaikina

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The present study examined the reliability of the scores of the California Psychological Inventory (CPI). The reported reliability coefficients were located via PsycInfo and recorded into a data set. A multiple regression analysis was performed on the coefficients for the Socialization scale as well as on the three factors of the CPI. No predictors were found to be significant. The test retest reliabilities were significantly higher than the internal consistency reliabilities across all scale factors. A lack of significant results may be explained by the fact that the CPI is a multi-subscale instrument and not all of the scales are …

Scheduling Of Real Time Embedded Systems For Resource And Energy Minimization By Voltage Scaling, Naveen Babu Anne Jan 2005

Scheduling Of Real Time Embedded Systems For Resource And Energy Minimization By Voltage Scaling, Naveen Babu Anne

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The aspects of real-time embedded computing are explored with the focus on novel real-time scheduling policies, which would be appropriate for low-power devices. To consider real-time deadlines with pre-emptive scheduling policies will require the investigation of intelligent scheduling heuristics. These aspects for various other RTES models like Multiple processor system, Dynamic Voltage Scaling and Dynamic scheduling are the focus of this thesis. Deadline based scheduling of task graphs representative of real time systems is performed on a multiprocessor system; A set of aperiodic, dependent tasks in the form of a task graph are taken as the input and all the …

Determinacy And Multiplayer Games, Christine Lee Mckenna Jan 2005

Determinacy And Multiplayer Games, Christine Lee Mckenna

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In the field of set theory, two-player infinite games of perfect information are well studied. The determinacy of various classes of such games have led to many important results. Furthermore, such determinacy follows from large cardinal axioms. In this thesis, we are instead interested in such infinite games with more than two players. With the study of two-player games being so fruitful, why aren't such infinite games studied with more than two players?;One difficulty in proving determinacy is that players need not play in any reasonable manner: A player may actually play a move that immediately results in a winning …

Stochastic Learning Feedback Hybrid Automata For Dynamic Power Management In Embedded Systems, T. Erbes, S. K. Shukla, Pushkin Kachroo Jan 2005

Stochastic Learning Feedback Hybrid Automata For Dynamic Power Management In Embedded Systems, T. Erbes, S. K. Shukla, Pushkin Kachroo

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

Dynamic power management (DPM) refers to the strategies employed at system level to reduce energy expenditure (i.e. to prolong battery life) in embedded systems. The trade-off involved in DPM techniques is between the reductions of energy consumption and latency suffered by the tasks. Such trade-offs need to be decided at runtime, making DPM an on-line problem. We formulate DPM as a hybrid automaton control problem and integrate stochastic control. The control strategy is learnt dynamically using stochastic learning hybrid automata (SLHA) with feedback learning algorithms. Simulation-based experiments show the expediency of the feedback systems in stationary environments. Further experiments reveal …

Theoretical Modeling Of Protective Oxide Layer Growth In Non-Isothermal Lead-Alloys Coolant Systems, Yitung Chen Dec 2004

Theoretical Modeling Of Protective Oxide Layer Growth In Non-Isothermal Lead-Alloys Coolant Systems, Yitung Chen

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The goal of the proposed research project is to provide basic understanding of the protective oxide layer behaviors and to develop oxide layer growth models of steels in non-isothermal lead-alloys (lead or lead-bismuth eutectic) coolant systems. It is widely recognized that the corrosiveness of the lead-alloys is a critical obstacle and challenge for which it can be safely used or applied in the nuclear coolant systems. Active oxygen control technique can promote the formation of the “self-healing” oxide films on the structural material surface, drastically reducing steel corrosion and coolant contamination. Many experiments of steels exposed to flowing lead-alloys have …

Evaluation Of Fluorapatite As A Waste-Form Material: First Quarter Report (2004-05), October 1 - December 31, 2004, Dennis W. Lindle, Oliver Hemmers

Separations Campaign (TRP)

Fluorapatite, fluorinated calcium phosphate, has been identified as a potential matrix for the entombment of the zirconium fluoride fission product waste stream from the proposed FLEX process. If the efficacy of fluorapatite-based waste-storage can be demonstrated, then new and potentially more-efficient options for handling and separating high-level wastes, based on fluoride-salt extraction, will become feasible. This proposal will develop a dual-path research project to develop a process to fabricate a synthetic fluorapatite waste form for the ZrF4, FP waste stream, characterize the waste form, examine its performance under environmental conditions, and correlate the behavior of the waste form …

Neutron Multiplicity Measurements For The Afci Program Quarterly Progress Report September-December 2004, Denis Beller Dec 2004

Neutron Multiplicity Measurements For The Afci Program Quarterly Progress Report September-December 2004, Denis Beller

Transmutation Sciences Physics (TRP)

The U.S. Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI) is a program to develop economic and environmental methods to reduce the impact of waste from commercial nuclear fuel cycles. One concept for near-complete destruction of waste isotopes from used nuclear fuel is accelerator driven transmutation. High-power accelerators would be used to produce high-energy charged particles, which then collide with heavy metal targets to create a cascade of neutrons. These neutrons then cause a nuclear chain reaction in subcritical systems. Fission neutrons then transmute fissile waste isotopes as well as other problematic isotopes such as technetium-99 and iodine-129. To design these systems, complex …

Cfd Analysis Of 3-D Thermalhydraulics Flow Effects On Wall Concentration Gradient Profiles For Lbe Loop Fittings, Narain Armbya

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The objective of the thesis is to study the effects of thermalhydraulics flows on the wall concentration gradient profiles in LBE loop fittings. To that end detailed models of the fittings have been constructed to study these effects. These fittings include sudden expansion, sudden contraction, t-joint and elbow. The typical flow rates chosen for these simulations are typical of design criteria chosen for the loop with Reynolds numbers expected around 200,000 and the usual axial temperature profiles which are being characterized in the DELTA loop at LANL. STAR-CD is the simulation package used to make these predictions, which include detailed …

Environmental Effects On Corrosion Properties Of Alloy 22, K. S. Raja, L. G. Mcmillion, Shantanu A. Namjoshi, Paige Russel, Raymond E. Keeler, Amy J. Smiecinski

Publications (YM)

During the regulatory life of the Yucca Mountain High Level Nuclear Waste (HLNW) repository the primary engineered barrier that is to prevent release of radioactive material into the environment is proposed to be a Corrosion-Resistant Material (CRM) outer shell covering the Waste Package (WP) container. The current selection for the CRM is Alloy 22 (UNS N06022), a Ni-Cr-Mo-W-Fe alloy. Alloy 22 forms a defective chromic oxide passive film which results in excellent corrosion resistance; the presence of molybdenum in Alloy 22 offers corrosion resistance in reducing environments as well as oxidizing environments.
