Preservice Teachers’ Self-Perceptions And Attitudes Toward Culturally Responsive Teaching, Barbara Frye, Linda Button, Catherine Kelly, Greg Button Apr 2010

Preservice Teachers’ Self-Perceptions And Attitudes Toward Culturally Responsive Teaching, Barbara Frye, Linda Button, Catherine Kelly, Greg Button

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

When infusing Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) concepts in preservice methods classes, teacher candidates (TCs) begin a journey that involves understanding the cultural contributions of the students in the classroom, as well as becoming aware of the possible disconnects between their cultures and the culture of the school. To help preservice teachers learn how to bridge these gaps, teacher education faculty integrated history, literacy, and art into a literacy methods course as a first step in helping teacher candidates develop the necessary competencies to successfully implement culturally responsive teaching in their own classrooms. Four university faculty members administered an adapted version …

A Critical Review Of Culturally Responsive Literacy Instruction, Elaine Cheesman, Randall De Pry Apr 2010

A Critical Review Of Culturally Responsive Literacy Instruction, Elaine Cheesman, Randall De Pry

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

Eliminating the racial and ethnic achievement gap in reading and writing is a national priority. Providing literacy instruction that is both culturally responsive and evidence-based requires an understanding of culture, effective instructional practices, and how the two intersect. Although many suggestions for implementing culturally responsive reading instruction are intuitively appealing, more research evidence is needed to determine if these practices increase student engagement, motivation, and academic achievement of students who are culturally and linguistically diverse.

Culturally Responsive Classrooms Through Art Integration, Nancy Reif, Leslie Grant Apr 2010

Culturally Responsive Classrooms Through Art Integration, Nancy Reif, Leslie Grant

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

Integrating arts into teaching and learning can result in more engaging classrooms for students of all backgrounds. Addressing content through drawing, painting, music, drama, sculpture, and manipulatives results in motivating lessons that reach diverse learners by means of multiple pathways. Benefits of incorporating the arts include not only academic achievement (Ruppert, 2006; Rabkin & Redmond, 2006), but also increased cultural understandings, better self-esteem, and a healthier cultural identity (Purnell, et al., 2007; Graham, 2009). Sample lessons with detailed explanations from an elementary classroom are highlighted to demonstrate how forms of linguistic and nonlinguistic artistic expression benefit all children in their …

Reflections On Culturally Responsive Teaching: Embedding Theory Into Practices Of Instructional And Behavioral Support, Randall De Pry, Elaine Cheesman Apr 2010

Reflections On Culturally Responsive Teaching: Embedding Theory Into Practices Of Instructional And Behavioral Support, Randall De Pry, Elaine Cheesman

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

This paper offers reflections on the embedding of culturally responsive teaching practices into Response-to-Intervention (RtI) and School-wide Positive Behavior Support (SW-PBS) models. These types of systemic change models are increasingly being adopted by schools to address academic achievement and to foster a positive school climate. Moreover, they hold promise for addressing the disproportionality that many students who are culturally and linguistically diverse students experience in our schools. Following a review of the existing literature on systemic change, three guiding principles are offered that demonstrate how culturally responsive teaching can be embedded into models of instructional and behavioral support.

Theoretical And Computational Study Of Time Dependent Scattering On A 2d Surface, Michael Sohn Apr 2010

Theoretical And Computational Study Of Time Dependent Scattering On A 2d Surface, Michael Sohn

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The quantum mechanical treatment of the elastic scattring of atoms from a crystal surface provides valuable information, such as surface properties and gas-surface interaction potentials. However, since it is based on the stationary state solution, it does not provide the details of the scattering process in the neighborhood of the surface, especially when atoms are physically adsorbed. In this thesis, the time evolution of the scattering process is treated in 2D with a model potential, V(x, z) = -|g|δ(z) + λδ(z)cos(2πx/a), using the Gaussian wave packet approach. The focus is on the case where the Gaussian wave packet makes a …

Photon Density Of States Of 47-Iron And 161-Dysprosium In Dyfe3 By Nuclear Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Under High Pressure, Elizabeth Anne Tanis Apr 2010

Photon Density Of States Of 47-Iron And 161-Dysprosium In Dyfe3 By Nuclear Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Under High Pressure, Elizabeth Anne Tanis

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The dual partial phonon density of states (DOS) from two different Mossbauer isotopes (161Dy and 57Fe) in the same material (DyFe3) was successfully measured using the nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NRIXS) technique at high pressure. Nuclear inelastic scattering measurements yield an in-depth understanding of the element-specific dynamic properties. The Debye temperatures, the Lamb-Mossbauer factor (fLM), and the vibrational contributions to the Helmholtz free energy (Fvib), specific heat (cV ), entropy (Svib) and internal energy (Uvib) are calculated directly from the phonon density of states.

Finite Strain Studies Of Single Crystal Fe3p Under High Pressures, John William Howard Apr 2010

Finite Strain Studies Of Single Crystal Fe3p Under High Pressures, John William Howard

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Fe3P (synthetic schreibersite) is a phosphide occurring in iron alloys. Phosphorousis often considered an undesired impurity causing brittleness. Conversely, in some cases the addition of iron phosphides to certain materials is beneficial (e.g.properties of certain frictional materials are enhanced). In terrestrial rock, we do not find Fe3P, although (Fe;Ni)3P (natural schreibersite) is found in nearly all iron-containing meteorites. In this project, we examine the unit cell parameters of Fe3P as function of pressure and derive the respective axial and bulk compressibilities. Both Vinet and Birch-Murnaghan formulations were used to relate pressure and unit cell volume, and a comparison of each …

Assessing The Effect Of Simulation Models On Systems Learning In An Introductory Environmental Science Course, Heather J. Skaza Apr 2010

Assessing The Effect Of Simulation Models On Systems Learning In An Introductory Environmental Science Course, Heather J. Skaza

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

While there is plenty of anecdotal evidence within the systems dynamics community supporting the use of systems simulations in the classroom to improve student understanding, there is little published, controlled, experimental research. This paper describes the results of a paired experiment testing the effect of using system dynamics simulations to increase systems understanding in an introductory environmental science course. We believed that the students using the systems simulations would demonstrate a greater systemic understanding of environmental issues than those who did not.

We conducted an experiment during the fall semester of 2009, with 304 students enrolled in four sections of …

Attitudes Towards Megan's Law And Juvenile Sex Offenders, Debra Lee Cochrane Apr 2010

Attitudes Towards Megan's Law And Juvenile Sex Offenders, Debra Lee Cochrane

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Sex offender registration laws are very controversial. All fifty states require adult sex offenders to register. Twenty-eight states have extended registration and community notification requirements to juveniles (Hiller, 1998). These states seem to have failed to look at the uniqueness of juvenile sex offending. Juveniles have a very low recidivism rate and complex issues of culpability from age-of-consent laws. Applying Megan's Law to juveniles could have considerable negative consequences for juveniles' social development, particularly because one of the main stipulations of the law requires the juvenile to notify their school. Rehabilitation is a key factor of the juvenile justice system …

Dla-Lbg Cross-Correlation And Basic Properties Of Infrared Galaxies In Cosmological Simulations, Tae Song Lee Apr 2010

Dla-Lbg Cross-Correlation And Basic Properties Of Infrared Galaxies In Cosmological Simulations, Tae Song Lee

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

PART I

We calculate the cross-correlation function (CCF) between damped Ly-alpha systems (DLAs) and Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations at z = 3. We compute the CCF with two different methods. First, we assume that there is one DLA in each dark matter halo if its DLA cross section is non-zero. In our second approach we weight the pair-count by the DLA cross section of each halo, yielding a cross-section-weighted CCF. We also compute the angular CCF for direct comparison with observations. Finally, we calculate the auto-correlation functions of LBGs and DLAs, and their bias against the …

The Impact Of Individual Decision Making On Campus Sustainability Initiatives, Aurali Ella Dade Apr 2010

The Impact Of Individual Decision Making On Campus Sustainability Initiatives, Aurali Ella Dade

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) have increasingly committed to become more sustainable in recent years. Despite this commitment, academic publications in the sustainability field assert that progress has been slower at IHEs than expected and that most IHEs have found sustainability initiatives difficult to implement. Comprehensive sustainability initiatives require cooperation from a broad set of constituents with diverse and sometimes conflicting goals. Creating a sustainable IHE also requires changes in both physical infrastructure and individual behavior. Any number of institutional factors can advance or limit progress towards these objectives.

Previous investigations have assessed individual case studies, compared IHEs in a …

A Secure On-Line Credit Card Transaction Method Based On Kerberos Authentication Protocol, Jung Eun Kim

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Nowadays, electronic payment system is an essential part of modern business. Credit cards or debit cards have been widely used for on-site or remote transactions, greatly reducing the need for inconvenient cash transactions. However, there have been a huge number of incidents of credit card frauds over the Internet due to the security weakness of electronic payment system. A number of solutions have been proposed in the past to prevent this problem, but most of them were inconvenient and did not satisfy the needs of cardholders and merchants at the same time.

In this thesis, we present a new secure …

Solar Eclipse Monitoring For Solar Energy Applications Using The Solar And Moon Position Algorithms, Ibrahim Reda Mar 2010

Solar Eclipse Monitoring For Solar Energy Applications Using The Solar And Moon Position Algorithms, Ibrahim Reda

Publications (E)

This report includes a procedure for implementing an algorithm (described by Jean Meeus [1]) to calculate the Moon’s zenith angle with uncertainty of ±0.001° and azimuth angle with uncertainty of ±0.003°. The step-by-step format presented here simplifies the complicated steps Meeus describes to calculate the Moon’s position, and focuses on the Moon instead of the planets and stars. It also introduces some changes to accommodate for solar radiation applications. These include changing the direction of measuring azimuth angles from north and eastward instead of from south and eastward, and the direction of measuring the observer’s geographical longitude to be measured …
