An Economic Analysis Of The Arsenic Standard On Nevada, Jill S. Dale Apr 2002

An Economic Analysis Of The Arsenic Standard On Nevada, Jill S. Dale

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In 2001, the arsenic standard for drinking water was lowered from 50 parts per billion to 10 parts per billion. The clean-up costs for Nevada are estimated at approximately 400 million dollars. The purpose of this project is to examine the economic impacts the State of Nevada will absorb as a result of the new regulation. Research of historical data will be the basis for the project. National data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and data collected from the State of Nevada will be accompanied by comparable research data found through other sources

Stratigraphy And Depositional Environments Of Lower And Middle Cambrian Strata In The Lake Mead Region, Southern Nevada And Northwestern Arizona, Joseph Kirk Hardy Jan 1997

Stratigraphy And Depositional Environments Of Lower And Middle Cambrian Strata In The Lake Mead Region, Southern Nevada And Northwestern Arizona, Joseph Kirk Hardy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The stratigraphy and depositional systems revealed within the Lower to Middle Cambrian Tapeats Sandstone-Pioche Shale-Lyndon Limestone-Chisholm Shale succession were studied between the easternmost limit of Cretaceous overthrusting in southern Nevada and the western edge of the Colorado Plateau in northwestern Arizona. Nine intergradational lithofacies were distinguished based on a rich suite of sedimentary structures, including lenticular-, wavy-, and flaser-bedding, wrinkle marks, herringbone cross-stratification, convolute bedding, primary current lineations, interference ripple marks, bird's eye structures, thrombolites, intraformational conglomerates, oncoids, cryptalgal laminites, and Arenicoloides, Corophioides, and Skolithos ichnofossils. The collective presence of these structures indicates that Lower and Middle Cambrian rocks in …

Comparison Of Time-Domain Reflectometry Performance Factors For Several Dielectric Geometries: Theory And Experiments, S. V. Maheshwarla, R. Venkatasubramanian, Robert F. Boehm Aug 1995

Comparison Of Time-Domain Reflectometry Performance Factors For Several Dielectric Geometries: Theory And Experiments, S. V. Maheshwarla, R. Venkatasubramanian, Robert F. Boehm

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

We propose three nontraditional dielectric geometries and present an experimental and theoretical analysis and comparison of time domain reflectometry (TDR) performances for them. The traditional geometry (the probes inserted in material of essentially infinite extent) is compared to three nontraditional geometries where the probes are affixed outside of a core sample, inside of a bore, or flat on the surface of a semi-infinite solid. Our derivation relates the velocity of electromagnetic wave propagation to the complex permittivities and permeabilities of the media and the geometry for the three nontraditional configurations. Experimental results for air, styrofoam, dry sand, wet sand of …

The Study Of Yucca Mountain For A Possible Nuclear Storage Facility Science Vs. Politics, Anna Leske Apr 1995

The Study Of Yucca Mountain For A Possible Nuclear Storage Facility Science Vs. Politics, Anna Leske

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this paper is to determine whether scientific or political methods were used by the of the United States Congress in the study of the nuclear waste storage facility in Yucca Mountain, Nevada. The history nuclear power and the history of the Johnston compromise that lead to the elimination of Texas and Washington States as possible sites for the repository is explained. A review of the conflicts between Nevada politicians and the U.S. Congress over the designation of Yucca Mountain as the sole study for a permanent storage site of the nation's high-level nuclear waste is addressed along …

The Sloan Sag: A Mid-Miocene Volcanotectonic Depression, North-Central Mccullough Mountains, Southern Nevada, Hayden L. Bridwell Dec 1991

The Sloan Sag: A Mid-Miocene Volcanotectonic Depression, North-Central Mccullough Mountains, Southern Nevada, Hayden L. Bridwell

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In the Hidden Valley area of the north-central McCullough Mountains, southern Nevada, mid-Miocene andesite and dacite domes, flows and pyroclastic units (the Sloan volcanics) partially fill a sag in the underlying Hidden Valley volcanics. The 13.5 km diameter sag formed during and/or after the eruption of the Sloan volcanics. Sagging was accommodated by a combination of movement on the McCullough Wash fault system, and subsidence into evacuated chambers.

Major, trace and rare-earth element geochemistry suggests that the rocks of the Sloan volcanics belong to four groups, each of which were produced by partial melting of chemically distinct sources. With the …

The Relationship Of The Yucca Mountain Repository Block To The Regional Groundwater System: A Geochemical Model, Nancy Ann Matsuka Jan 1990

The Relationship Of The Yucca Mountain Repository Block To The Regional Groundwater System: A Geochemical Model, Nancy Ann Matsuka

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Yucca Mountain, in southern Nevada, is being studied by the Department of Energy and the State of Nevada as the site of high-level nuclear waste repository. Geochemical and isotopic modeling were used in this thesis to define the relationship of the volcanic tuff aquifers and aquitards to the underlying regional carbonate ground-water system. The chemical evolution of aground water as it passes through a hypothetical tuffaceous aquifer was developed using computer models PHREEQE, WATEQDR and BALANCE. The tuffaceous system was divided into five parts, with specific mineralogies, reaction steps and temperatures. The initial solution was an analysis of a soil …

The Distribution Of Vertical Groundwater Flow In The Saturated Zone Of The Yucca Mountain Area: A Cross-Sectional Finite Element Model, Sandra Jean Haws Jan 1989

The Distribution Of Vertical Groundwater Flow In The Saturated Zone Of The Yucca Mountain Area: A Cross-Sectional Finite Element Model, Sandra Jean Haws

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study uses cross-sectional modeling to explore the saturated groundwater flow at Yucca Mountain in a multi-layer system. Cross-sectional modeling allows the simulation of vertical leakage not included in areal models. The cross section was constructed along an estimated streamline and is 84.3 kilometers long. The conceptual model includes an upper volcanic and lower carbonate aquifer separated by an aquitard with an alluvial aquifer down-gradient. Results indicate that some groundwater flows beneath the high-gradient (low conductivity) zone through the carbonate aquifer. The volcanic aquifer, south of the high gradient zone, must be supplied with additional groundwater as the low conductivity …

Spring Flow In A Portion Of Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, David Bruce Goings May 1985

Spring Flow In A Portion Of Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, David Bruce Goings

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Hermit, Monument, Salt, and Horn Creeks flow through four side canyons of the Colorado River within the Grand Canyon. They lie just west of Grand Canyon Village on the south side of the canyon. Each of these creeks is fed by at least one spring.

Comparisons of flow at each of these springs for a 14 month period, and precipitation on the south rim show a close correlation. The lag period between recharge at the rim and discharge at the springs is less than one month for Hermit Creek and between one and two months for the other three creeks. …

Available Water Supply Of The Las Vegas Ground-Water Basin Nevada, Glenn Thomas Malmberg Jan 1965

Available Water Supply Of The Las Vegas Ground-Water Basin Nevada, Glenn Thomas Malmberg

Publications (WR)

The Las Vegas ground-water basin as described in this report includes the southern part of Indian Spring Valley, Three Lakes Valley, the northern half of Ivanpah Valley, and Las Vegas Valley. These valleys in part are inferred to form a hydrologic unit that includes an area of about 3,000 square miles in the southern part of Clark County, Nev.

The valleys forming the Las Vegas ground-water basin are broad structural depressions surrounded by mountains. The climate of the region is arid, and precipitation in the basin lowlands rarely exceeds 5 inches per year. Drainage is interior except for occasional Hood …
